Abstract:The liquid-liquid equilibrium data of water - acetic acid - 2-ethyl hexanol ternary system at 288. 15K, 293. 15K, 298. 15K and 303. 15K were determined under atmospheric pressure. The experimental data at four temperatures were correlated by using NRTL model, and the predicted results fit the experimental results well.

Abstract:Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data of the systems acetic acid+N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), acetic acid+dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), DMSO+water, water+acetic acid+DMF, and water+acetic acid+DMSO have been measured at 13.33kPa by using an improved Rose equilibrium still. The association of acetic acid in vapor phase has been considered, and the nonideality of vapor phase was accounted for using the Hayden–O’Connell (HOC) method. The experimental binary data have been correlated by the NRTL, Wilson and van Laar models. The NRTL model parameters obtained from the binary data have been used to predict the ternary VLE data. The ternary predicted values obtained in this way agree well with the experimental values.

Abstract:The removal and recycling of acetic acid from aqueous solutions is important for environmental protection and resource utilization. In this work, ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethylphosphate ([EMIM][DEP]) as an entrainer for the extractive distillation of the system water + acetic acid was investigated. Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data of the systems acetic acid + water, water + [EMIM]-[DEP], acetic acid + [EMIM][DEP], and water + acetic acid + [EMIM][DEP] have been measured at 101.32 kPa by using an improved Rose Williams equilibrium still. The addition of [EMIM][DEP] showed a remarkable entrainer performance for the separation of acetic acid from its aqueous solution. The boiling point difference of the water + acetic acid system increased from 17.88 K (0 wt % IL) to 42.41 K (about 50 wt % IL), and the relative volatility (x(1)' = 0.9) increased from 1.60 (0 wt % IL) to 5.28 (about 50 wt % IL). On the basis of the chemical theory and the Hayden-O'Connell (HOC) method, the parameters of the NRTL model for the binary systems were obtained, and the predicted values of the ternary systems of water + acetic acid + [EMIM][DEP] fitted the experimental VLE data well.

Abstract:Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium(VLE) data for acetic acid+ dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) system was measured at 101.33 kPa by using an improved Rose equilibrium still.Thermodynamic consistency for the experimental data was examined by using point-by-point test,and the fugacity coefficients of components in the vapor phase were calculated by Hayden-O′connell method.van Laar,Wilson and NRTL Models were used during the data correlation,and the parameters were obtained. The calculated values were in good agreement with the experimental data.For NRTL model,the average absolute deviation of temperature is 0.26 K,and the average absolute deviation in vapor phase is 0.0027.These data provide the necessary basic data for the design of acetic acid extractive distillation process.

Abstract:The experimental liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data of the quaternary systems ethanol + hexanol + decane + water, ethanol + hexanol + undecane + water, ethanol + heptanol + decane + water, and ethanol + heptanol + undecane + water were collected at 298.15 K under atmospheric pressure. The UNIQUAC model was used to regress the quaternary systems and acquire the binary interaction parameter, which was used to predict the LLE data of the six-component system. The predicted LLE data were compared with the experimental data, and the results showed they were in good agreement, which indicated that the binary interaction parameters acquired from the quaternary systems could predict the LLE data of the six-component system. The distribution coefficient and the selectivity showed that 65% ethanol aqueous solution was suitable for separating hexanol and heptanol from the hexanol-heptanol-decane undecane mixture.

Abstract:In this work, the suitability or potential of ethanol aqueous solutions as a solvent for the extraction of alcohols from alcohol–alkane mixtures was studied. Experimental liquid–liquid equilibria (LLE) data of four quaternary systems {ethanol (1) + octanol (2) + dodecane (4) + water (6)}, {ethanol (1) + octanol (2) + tridecane (5) + water (6)}, {ethanol (1) + nonanol (3) + dodecane (4) + water (6)}, and {ethanol (1) + nonanol (3) + tridecane (5) + water (6)} were determined at T of 293.15, 298.15, and 303.15 K under atmospheric pressure. The nonrandom two-liquid model model was used to correlate binary interaction parameters. The parameters obtained from quaternary systems were used to predict six-component system LLE data. The predicted LLE data were in good agreement with the experimental data. The results showed that 75 wt % ethanol aqueous solution was suitable for separating octanol and nonanol from octanol + nonanol + dodecane + tridecane mixture and that 298.15 K was the suitable temperature.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid equilibrium data for the ternary system of water + 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol + epichlorohydrin were determined at the temperature of (283.15, 293.15, 303.15) K and atmosphere pressure. The reliability of experimental method was examined by the mass balance verification and the Othmer-Tobias equation. The experimental data were successfully correlated with both the NRTL model and UNIQUAC model, and the NRTL model presents more satisfactory result. These LLE data and model parameters obtained in this work are helpful for understanding, designing, and developing epichlorohydrin synthesis processes.

Abstract:For some strongly non-ideal solution systems, there are often errors in predicting the phase equilibrium relationship of a multi-component system using the interaction parameters obtained by the regression of the phase equilibrium data of the binary system. The interaction parameters between the components obtained by directly determining the phase equilibrium of the multivariate system will bring the calculated values closer to the experimental values. Liquid–liquid equilibrium (LLE) data were determined for the system of n-butanol + n-pentanol + n-hexanol + water at 313.15, 323.15, and 333.15K under atmospheric pressure. LLE compositions were determined by gas chromatography. LLE data were correlated by the UNIQUAC model and the non-random two-liquid (NRTL) model. Both models were appropriate for describing the LLE of this quaternary equilibrium system. They provided accurate thermodynamic parameters for the phase equilibrium of C4–6 mixed alcohols in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis water.

Abstract:Methyl acrylate has a wide range of uses, but the production process usually produces aqueous by-products. In this study, four commonly used alcohols (1-pentanol, 1-hexanol, 1-heptanol, and 1-octanol) were selected as extractants to explore the liquid–liquid extraction behavior of water + methyl acrylate + extractants. Through the analysis of partition coefficient ( D ) and separation coefficient ( S ), it is found that the data of all systems are greater than 1, indicating that all four alkyl alcohols can well separate methyl acrylate from aqueous solution, and 1-octanol is the best. In addition, the consistency between the binary interaction parameters of regression and tie-line data was tested using Matlab tools, proving that the obtained parameters have good consistency.

The equilibrium data of ternary systems were used to regress interaction parameters in non-random two-liquid (NRTL) equation. These parameters were directly used to predict equilibrium data of quaternary and quinary systems. The predicted data are in good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data for the ternary system water + ethylbenzene + acetophenone and water + ethylbenzene + 1-phenylethanol were determined at temperatures T = (298.2, 308.2, 318.2, and 328.2) K and atmospheric pressure. The immiscibility region was found to be relatively small and not sensitive to the change of temperature. The Othmer-Tobias and the Bachman correlations were used to test the consistency of the LLE data. The experimental data were correlated by both the nonrandom two-liquid and the universal quasichemical activity coefficient models. The relevant model interaction parameters were regressed by data fitting. The model correlated results show good agreement with the measured data. The obtained interaction parameters can be used in the calculation of LLE for the ternary system water + ethylbenzene + acetophenone and water + ethylbenzene +1-phenylethanol as well as for the design and optimization of the related separation process.

Abstract:Epoxidized oils are eco-friendly plasticizers, which are industrially produced through the epoxidation reaction in a formic acid-hydrogen peroxide autocatalyzed system. The fundamental knowledge to describe the phase equilibrium of systems after epoxidation reaction is lacking, which is crucial for the design of the purification facilities. This work reported experimental data for the liquid-liquid equilibrium of three systems, i.e., epoxidized fatty acid methyl esters + formic acid + water, epoxidized fatty acid 2-ethylhexyl esters + formic acid + water, and epoxidized soybean oil + formic acid + water, in the temperature range (303.15-348.15) K under atmospheric pressure. The results indicated that the liquid-liquid equilibrium constant of formic acid in the systems followed the order of epoxidized fatty acid 2-ethylhexyl esters > epoxidized fatty acid methyl esters > epoxidized soybean oil. Moreover, the obtained experimental data were correlated using nonrandom two liquid (NRTL) and universal quasi chemical (UNIQUAC) models. The maximum root mean square deviation (RMSD) values as low as 0.0052 and 0.0263 were estimated using the NRTL and UNIQUAC model, respectively. The NRTL model is more suitable than the UNIQUAC model to describe the liquid-liquid equilibrium behavior of these ternary systems.
