Abstract:This study focused on the characteristics of particulate matter and trace elements enrichment in emissions from a pulverized coal-fired boiler with a net capacity of 12MW in Beijing of China. The fly-ash particles were sampled from the flue gas streams with aerodynamic diameter classification, using Andersen 8-stage Stack Impactor. The concentrations of eight trace elements (As, Pb, Cr, Cd, Ni, Co, Cu and Zn) in the different size particles were measured using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The results indicate that the size distribution of ESP (electrostatic precipitator) inlet fly-ash particles is unimodal distribution in the size range of 0.7∼17μm and that the peak value locates at around m. The ESP outlet particle size distribution is flat in the size range of 1∼10μm, which shows that fine particles fraction increases in the total particulate matters obviously. It can be found from size distributions of fly-ash particles, before ESP and after ESP, that the removal efficiency of ESP is different for the different size particles. The lowest removal efficiency is 93.5% at particle size of around 1μm. The enrichment level of a trace element in the same size particles is positive correlation with its volatility. Those eight trace elements above can be divided into three groups according to their volatilities variation. The relative enrichment times of Cu, Cr, Co, Ni in Group 1 is 4μ6 and the largest relative enrichment times of As in Group 3 is nearly 30.
