Abstract:Effect of sodium sulfate, with a dosage of 1% and 2%(in mass) to blender respectively,on autogenous shrinkage and cracking of fresh concrete were investigated. Non contact concrete shrinkage measuring apparatus and plate type concrete cracking frame were adopted in this experiment.Microstructures of concrete, into which sodium sulfate was mixed, were studied intuitively by scanning electron microscope. Results show that the mechanism of sodium sulfate in pore with different pore sizes on autogenous shrinkage and cracking of fresh concrete are not uniform.Effect of sodium sulfate on shrinkage of concrete at early age correlates with the dosages of sodium sulfate as well as water/blender ratios. In the case of same sodium sulfate dosages, when the water/blender ratio is smaller the value of shrinkage at early age is bigger;while in the case of same water/blender ratio when the dosage of sodium sulfate is larger the shrinkage is smaller. Influence of sodium sulfate on the cracking of concrete correlate with different curing styles. Cracks at the surface of concretes cured in the air environments occurred earlier, wider and more than that cured in a sealed environment. Under this two curing styles the initial depth of crystals of sodium sulfate depends on the different rates of water evaporation, which is the main effect mechanism of sodium sulfate on cracking of concrete.
