Abstract:A facile approach has been successfully developed for the preparation of a series of cross-linked sulfonated polyimide (SPI) membranes via the condensation reaction between the sulfonic acid groups and the activated hydrogen atoms of SPIs in the presence of phosphorous pentoxide : methanesulfonic acid in the ratio of 1 : 10 by weight (PPMA, method 1) or phosphorous pentoxide only ( method 2). The resulting sulfonyl linkages are very stable and the cross-linked SPI membranes showed greatly improved water stability in comparison with the uncross-linked ones while high proton conductivity was maintained.

Abstract:A facile cross-linking method has been successfully developed for sulfonated polyimide (SPI) membranes. The SPIs with electron-rich phenyl rings in the non-sulfonated diamine moiety were readily cross-linked by immersing the membranes into a solution of phosphorous pentoxide and methanesulfonic acid at 30-80 degrees C. The resulting SPI membranes cross-linked via sulfonyl groups showed greatly improved water stability compared with the uncross-linked ones, while high proton conductivity was maintained. They have potential for fuel cells at high temperatures above 80 degrees C.

Abstract:A series of cross-linked sulphonated poly(sulphide sulphone) (SPSSF) membranes have been prepared via a polyphosphoric-acid-catalysed condensation reaction at 180 degrees C for a period of time (1.5-5.0 h) and the resulting cross-linking bonds are the highly stable sulphonyl groups. The cross-linking density could be controlled by regulating the reaction time. Cross-linking caused significant enhancement in the mechanical properties and large reduction in both water uptake (WU) and methanol permeability. The SPSSF-60 membrane (the numeral 60 refers to the degree of sulphonation), e.g. had a tensile strength increased from 16 to 27 MPa (wet membranes) after cross-linking for 5 h, while the WU substantially decreased from 320 to 58 wt.-% and the methanol permeability decreased from 1.9 x 10(-6) to 2.7 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1) (30 degrees C). Single cell test on hydrogen/oxygen revealed that the cross-linked SPSSF-50 (1.5 h) membrane displayed higher open circuit voltage (OCV, 1.02 V), higher maximum output power density (1.32 W cm(-2)) and significantly slower OCV decay rate than the uncross-linked SPSSF-40 membrane under the same operating conditions despite their similar ion exchange capacities. The crosslinked SPSSF-60 (5.0 h) and SPSSF-50 (1.5 h) membranes showed significantly better fuel cell performance than Nafion 212.

Abstract:A series of cSPAES/SPI blend membranes were prepared as proton exchange membrane by two types of sulfonated nonfluoropolymers: cross-linked sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (cSPAES) and sulfonated polyimide (SPI). The miscible structure of the blend membranes was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The water uptake, solvent uptake, water stability and swelling degree in water were tested. The results showed that, comparing with the corresponding cSPAES membranes, the stability of blend membranes in water and methanol solutions was significantly improved by the introduction of SPI. The blend membranes exhibited good thermal and mechanical properties, high proton conductivities which indicated promising potential for fuel cell applications.

Abstract:A new and facile approach has been developed for the preparation of cross-linked sulfonated poly(sulfide sulfone) (SPSSF) membranes. The cross-linking reaction was performed by immersing the SPSSF membranes into polyphosphoric acid at 180°C for 1.5h and the cross-linking bond was the very stable sulfonyl group. Cross-linking significantly improved the membrane performance, i.e., the cross-linked membranes showed better mechanical properties, lower water uptake and lower methanol permeability than the corresponding uncross-linked ones, while reasonably high proton conductivity was maintained. For example, for the membrane containing 40mol% sulfonated moiety, by cross-linking the tensile strength increased from 39MPa (dry) or 21MPa (wet) to 44MPa (dry) or 30MPa (wet) and the elongation at break from 17% (dry) or 18% (wet) to 65% (dry) or 21% (wet), while the water uptake was reduced from 74 to 38wt% and the methanol permeability from 7.0×10−7 to 1.6×10−7cm2s−1 (30°C). The proton conductivity, however, did not decrease too much (from 0.076 to 0.043Scm−1 in water at 30°C).

Abstract:A series of cross-linked proton exchange membranes with the ion exchange capacities (IECs) of 0.70 - 1.52 meq/g have been prepared via the reaction of the anhydride-terminated sulfonated polyimide oligomers (SPI-3, SPI-5 and SPI-7, here the figure refers to the averaged block length) and the polybenzimidazole with pendant amino groups (H2N-PBI) in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) during the membrane cast process. The prepared cross-linked membranes showed high tensile strength (55 - 80 MPa) and good water stability (> 2 months in deionized water at 100 °C). Fenton’s test revealed that all the cross-linked membranes displayed significantly better radical oxidative stability than the corresponding pure SPIs. This is attributed to the presence of the highly oxidative-stable PBI component in the cross-linked membranes. The proton conductivities of the cross-linked membranes increased with increasing temperature and relative humidity. The cross-linked membrane prepared from the longest oligomer (SPI-7) displayed the highest proton conductivity which is comparable to that of Nafion 117.

Abstract:To improve the radical oxidative stability, a series of covalently cross-linked blend membranes have been prepared from a sulfonated poly(sulfide sulfone) with 80% degree of sulfonation (SPSSF80) and a polybenzimidazole with pendant amino groups (H 2 N-PBI) using glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-560) and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) as cross-linkers. The resulting cross-linked membranes show increased tensile strength but slightly decreased elongation at break compared with the plain SPSSF80. The radical oxidative stability of the blend membranes is significantly improved due to the synergic action of the covalent cross-linking and the presence of the PBI component. For example, the cross-linked membrane with the composition of SPSSF80/H 2 N-PBI/KH-560 = 7/1/3 started to break into pieces after being soaked in Fenton’s reagent for 98 min, which is about 4 times longer than that (20 min) of the plain SPSSF50 (degree of sulfonation = 50%). The covalent cross-linking is also essential to suppress membrane swelling and to enhance membrane water stability. The KH-560-cross-linked blend membranes tend to show higher proton conductivities at low relative humidities than the BADGE-cross-linked one due to the hydrophilic silica network in the former. At fully hydrated state, the cross-linked membranes generally show high proton conductivities comparable with that of Nafion112®.

Abstract:Novel multiblock poly(arylene ether sulfone)s were prepared by a two-pot method from a phenoxide-end-capped fully disulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) oligomer and a fluoride-end-capped nonsulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) oligomer with block length of 10 as the hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties, respectively, and were subsequently used as starting materials to be treated with phosphorous pentoxide (P2O5) to get crosslinked membranes. The crosslinking reaction occurred between the sulfonic acid groups and activated ortho-hydrogen atoms to the ether linkage of the hydrophobic units in the presence of P2O5 during solution casting. The crosslinking ratio was simply controlled by the amount of P2O5, and the fundamental properties of the resulting crosslinked multiblock membranes were investigated in detail. The water uptake and solution uptake in methanol solutions decreased with increasing crosslinking ratio, but a comparable high proton conductivity was maintained in the uncrosslinked membranes. They exhibited isotropic swelling behavior and largely enhanced dimensional stability in water and methanol solutions, whereas the uncrosslinked one showed anisotropic swelling behavior. The oxidative stability of the crosslinked membranes was significantly enhanced by the formation of sulfonyl linkages. Abstract:For application in fuel cells, a series of low-cost proton exchange membranes with covalently crosslinking structure were prepared from sulfonated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) just through a heat treatment. The crosslinking reaction was verified and investigated in detail. The crosslinking degree could be controlled by adjusting the time or temperature for heat treatment. With a proton conductivity of 0.128Scm−1 and tensile strength of 52.8MPa, the optimum membrane showed a maxim power density of 0.893Wcm−2 while that of Nafion® 112 is 0.602Wcm−2 in a single cell test at 60°C. In view of the competitive properties with Nafion® series, the crosslinked membranes are qualified for a potential application in fuel cells.

Abstract:Sulfonated polyimides containing benzimidazole (SPIBI) with varies sulfonation degree (DS) are synthesized by 1, 4, 5, 8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA), 5-amino-2-(4-aminophenyl) benzimidazole (APABI) and 4, 4′-diaminodiphenyl ether-2, 2′-disulfonic acid (ODADS). The cross-linked SPIBI membranes can be prepared with 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethyl-diphenyl diglycidyl ether (TMBP) as cross-linker during the following thermal treatment process. By adjusting the DS of SPIBI and the weight ratio of the crosslinker, a series of the cross-linked membranes are obtained. All the obtained membranes exhibit good cross-linking densities for the gel fractions higher than 75%. Compared to pure SPIBI membranes, the mechanical properties, oxidative and hydrolytic stabilities of the cross-linked membranes are improved significantly. For instance, the tensile strength of the cross-linked membranes is in the range of 53.6–108.4MPa, the anti-free oxidative stability of SPIBI-80-15 (with a cross-linker content of 15wt% and DS of 80%) is almost four times of the data of the uncross-linked SPIBI-80 which is tested by Fenton′s reagent (3% H2O2, 3ppm Fe2+) at 80°C. SPIBI-80-15 also exhibits much higher hydrolytic stability for more than 1440h, while that of SPIBI-80 is 27h in the same condition. The proton conductivity of the cross-linked membranes ranges from 10−3 to 10−2Scm−1.

Abstract:The cross-linkable sulfonated ploy(arylene ether)s derived from 3,3′-diallyl-4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl, bisphthalazinone, 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone (DFBP) and sulfonated 4,4′-diflourobenzophenone (SDFBP) were synthesized over a wide range of DFBP/SDFBP molar ratios. The resulting sulfonated poly(arylene ether)s with high inherent viscosity (1.02–1.29dLg−1) are soluble in polar organic solvents and can form flexible and transparent membranes by casting from their solution. Cross-linking reaction was carried out using the thermal activated radical cross-linking agent (TARC) at 140°C. The comprehensive properties of the virgin and the cross-linked membranes were compared accordingly. The results showed that the cross-linked membranes revealed the better mechanical, oxidative and dimensional stabilities together with high proton conductivity (9.675×10−3Scm−1) at 25°C under 100% relative humidity.

Abstract:Three sulfonated polyimides, including a couple of isomeric polymers, were synthesized through a typical “one pot” polymerization reaction. Hybrid membranes were constructed by incorporating a multiple-acid functionalized polysilsesquioxane into the above polymers via a sol–gel process. The properties, including thermal stability, mechanical properties, water uptake, swelling ratio, methanol permeability and proton conductivity were evaluated. The proton conductivities of the membranes were above 0.11Scm−1 at 100°C. Hybrid membranes exhibited the enhanced ability of water absorption and proton conducting. The methanol permeabilities of these membranes were 3.8–6.94×10−7cm2s−1, which were more competitive than Nafion 117. It was found that isomeric structure could affect the properties of both the pristine and hybrid membranes. The microstructures featured with phase-separation morphology could be observed in the hybrid membranes.

Abstract:Cross-linked sulfonated polyimides are one of the most promising materials for proton exchange membrane (PEM) applications. However, these cross-linked membranes are difficult to reprocess because they are insoluble. In this study, a series of cross-linkable sulfonated polyimides with flexible pendant alkyl side chains containing trimethoxysilyl groups is successfully synthesized. The cross-linkable polymers are highly soluble in common solvents and can be used to prepare tough and smooth films. Before the cross-linking reaction is complete, the membranes can be reprocessed, and the recovery rate of the prepared films falls within an acceptable range. The cross-linked membranes are obtained rapidly when the cross-linkable membranes are immersed in an acid solution, yielding a cross-linking density of the gel fraction of greater than 90%. The cross-linked membranes exhibit high proton conductivities and tensile strengths under hydrous conditions. Compared with those of pristine membranes, the oxidative and hydrolytic stabilities of the cross-linked membranes are significantly higher. The CSPI-70 membrane shows considerable power density in a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) test. All of these results suggest that the prepared cross-linked membranes have great potential for applications in proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Abstract:A series of crosslinkable sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (SPAESs) were synthesized by copolymerization of 4,4'-biphenol with 2,6-difluorobenzil and 3,3'-disulfonated-4,4'-difluorodiphenyl sulfone disodium salt. Quinoxaline-based crosslinked SPAESs were prepared via the cyclocondensation reaction of benzil moieties in polymer chain with 3,3'-diaminobenzidine to form quinoxaline groups acting as covalent and acid-base ionic crosslinking. The uncrosslinked and crosslinked SPAES membranes showed high mechanical properties and the isotropic membrane swelling, while the later became insoluble in tested polar aprotic solvents. The crosslinldng significantly improved the membrane performance, i.e., the crosslinked membranes had the lower membrane dimensional change, lower methanol permeability and higher oxidative stability than the corresponding precursor membranes, with keeping the reasonably high proton conductivity. The crosslinked membrane (CS1-2) with measured ion exchange capacity of 1.53 mequiv. g(-1) showed a reasonably high proton conductivity of 107 mS/cm with water uptake of 48 wt.% at 80 degrees C, and exhibited a low methanol permeability of 2.3 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1) for 32 wt.% methanol solution at 25 degrees C. Abstract:The crosslinked sulfonated poly (bis-A)-sulfone (SPSF) proton exchange membranes were prepared by immersing the SPSF membrane into the presence of phosphorous pentoxide–methanesulfonic acid (PPMA) in the ratio of 1:10 by weight. The occurring of crosslinking reaction was proved and the membrane properties before and after crosslinking were evaluated. The results showed that the crosslinking treatment has reduced the water uptake, depressed the swelling, and enhanced the dimensional stability of SPSF membranes with just only slight sacrifice in proton conductivity. The ordered arrangement of molecular chain internal SPSF membrane was reduced and the efficiency of crosslinking reaction showed a random property along the depth direction of the membrane in the process of crosslinking.

Abstract:Sulfonated polyimides are among the most interesting proton exchange membrane materials with high proton conductivity and good mechanical characteristics. As a major challenge the hydrolytic instability of the polymer backbone is addressed by introducing basic moieties in the polymer main chain. A series of sulfonated copolyimides (SPI) are prepared via random copolymerizatio of 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA) with a new diamine monomer with pendant benzimidazole groups, 2,2′-bis(4-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)phenoxy)benzidine (BIPOB), and a sulfonated diamine monomer 4,4′-bis(4-aminophenoxy)biphenyl-3,3′-disulfonic acid (BAPBDS) at different diamine molar ratios (BAPBDS/BIPOB, 4/1, 6/1, 9/1 and 12/1). With ion exchange capacities in the range of 1.60–2.24meqg−1, transparent and ductile membranes are obtained by solution casting. The incorporation of benzimidazole pendant groups significantly improves the hydrolytic stability as well as the radical oxidative stability of the membranes. In addition, the SPI membranes exhibit high proton conductivities of 0.1Scm−1 in the fully hydrated state at 60°C and high elastic modulus and tensile strength. Preliminary fuel cell tests demonstrate the technical feasibility and stability of the materials.

Abstract:A novel sulfonated polybenzimidazole, sulfonated poly[2,2′-(p-oxydiphenylene)-5,5′-bibenzimidazole] (SOPBI), was successfully prepared by post-sulfonation reaction of the parent polymer, poly[2,2′-(p-oxydiphenylene)-5,5′-bibenzimidazole] (OPBI), using concentrated and fuming sulfuric acid as the sulfonating reagent at 80°C, and the degree of sulfonation (DS) could be regulated by controlling the reaction conditions. No significant polymer degradation was observed in the post-sulfonation processes. Direct polymerization of 4,4′-dicarboxydiphenyl ether-2,2′-disulfonic acid disodium salt (DCDPEDS) and 3,3′-diaminobenzidine (DABz), however, resulted in insoluble gels either in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) or in phosphorus pentoxide/methanesulfonic acid (PPMA) in a ratio of 1:10 by weight reaction medium. The SOPBIs prepared by the post-sulfonation method showed good solubility in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), high thermal stability, good film forming ability and excellent mechanical properties. Cross-linked SOPBI membranes were successfully prepared by thermal treatment of phosphoric acid-doped SOPBI membranes at 180°C in vacuo for 20h and the resulting cross-linked membranes showed much improved water stability and radical oxidative stability in comparison with the corresponding uncross-linked ones, while the proton conductivity did not change largely. Highly proton conductive (150mScm−1, 120°C in water) and water stable SOPBI membrane was developed.
Preparation of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)s containing amino groups/epoxy resin composite membranes and their in situ crosslinking for application in fuel cells

Abstract:A series of amino-containing sulfonated poly(aryl ether ketone)/4,4′-diglycidyl(biphenyl) epoxy resin (DGBP) composite membranes for proton exchange membranes fuel cells (PEMFCs) are prepared by solution blending and casting. The reaction kinetics and the effects of introduction of DGBP content on the properties of the composite membranes are thoroughly investigated. The crosslinked composite membranes after treatment at either 120°C or 200°C have improved oxidative and dimensional stability than those without crosslinking. Despite the fact that crosslinked membranes generally have lower proton conductivity in comparison with the original ones, the proton conductivities of the membranes treated at 120°C are above 2.22×10−2Scm−1 at room temperature and 9.42×10−2Scm−1 at 100°C. Even for the samples treated at 200°C, their proton conductivities are still higher than 1.26×10−2Scm−1 at room temperature and higher than 8.67×10−2Scm−1 at 100°C, which are well satisfied with elementary requirement of fuel cells. In addition, all the evaluated membranes have low methanol permeability. For example, the methanol permeability of AP6FSPEEK/DGBP1 cured at 200°C is 0.33×10−6cm2s−1, which is an order magnitude lower than Nafion 117. Therefore, these novel crosslinked composite membranes could be potential usage in fuel cells.
Preparation and Fuel Cell Performance of Carbonyl and Sulfone Groups Co-crosslinked Sulfonated Polyimide Proton Exchange Membranes

Abstract:A series of six-membered ring type SPI PEMs was synthesized with 3,5-bis( 4-aminophenoxy) benzoic acid( BAPBa). Carbonyl and sulfone co-crosslinked SPI PEMs were prepared by methanesulfonic acid /phosphorus pentoxide solution( PPMA). Their properties including proton conductivity,hydrolysis resistance,mechanical properties and fuel cell performance were investigated. The results showed that the crosslinking degree of carbonyl and sulfone co-crosslinked SPI PEMs increased,while the consumption of sulfonic acid group decreased,which kept the SPI PEMs maintaining high proton conductivity when compared to the sulfone groups crosslinked ones. For example,the proton conductivity of the carbonyl and sulfone co-crosslinked SPI PEM was 7. 8 m S / cm at 50%RH,which increased by 28%. After aging in water at 130 ℃ for 500 h,elongation at break of the carbonyl and sulfone co-crosslinked SPI PEM was 18% and no obvious reduction in proton conductivity. Fuel cell performance showed that,the maximum power output of the carbonyl and sulfone co-crosslinked SPI PEM reached 0. 85 W / cm2,which was 1. 3 times higher than that of sulfone crosslinked one.
