Influence of high-strength bolted end-plate connections in composite frames

Abstract:In recent years, for the advantages in economical and proper utilizing the ability of steel and concrete, composite frames which take the advantage of reinforced concrete and steel, are becoming increasingly popular. The high-strength bolted end-plate connection as a valid form has some favorable merits in construction. However, for the local buckling, local yielding or rupture, local destroyed, stress concentrating, strain hardening, bolts slipping etc., the connections may be not fully restrained but partially restrained in actual. The paper analyzes the influences on force distribution when partially restrained frames designed as fully restrained. Some suggestions such as enhancing the rigidity of connections in design are also discussed.
