Abstract:Summary form only given. The effect of surface treatment by hydrogen plasma treatment on the uniformity field emission from carbon nanotube (CNT) film will be studied. The CNT film was prepared by using thermal vapour deposition (CVD) on Ni-Cr/Si. The surface of as-grown CNT film will be treated by reactive ion etch (RIE) system in hydrogen plasma. In order to compare the microstructure of untreated CNT film with treated CNT film, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy will be employed. The I-V characteristics and uniformity of field emission of both the untreated and treated CNT film will be measured in ultra-high vacuum by using transparent anode technique. The I-V and uniformity of field emission of the CNT film will be compared before and after hydrogen plasma treatment. The mechanism for the observed effect will be investigated.

Abstract:The authors report that the field emission of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is significantly improved by electroplating. The electroplating leads to a decrease of the turn-on electric field from 2.95 to 1.0 V/μm and an increase of the emission-current density from 0.224 to 0.8112 mA/cm2 at an applied electric field of 8 V/μm. It is found that after 23 days the current density of the CNT emitters prepared with electroplating only decreases by 10%, whereas that of the CNT emitters prepared without electroplating decreases by more than 80%. The improvement of the field emission of CNTs is due to the electroplating-enabled strong adhesion between the CNTs and the substrate. This has been verified by the measurement of the contact resistance.

Abstract:Electron emission from vertically aligned carbon nanotubes grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition has been measured using a parallel plate anode and a 1 mum tungsten probe. The field emission characteristics were measured as a function of the nanotube diameter, length, and areal density. It was found that less densely populated "short and stubby" nanotubes with diameters of 200 nm and heights of 0.7 mum showed the best emission characteristics with a threshold voltage of 2 V/mum and saturation emission current density of 10 mA/cm2. A triple junction between nanotube, substrate, and vacuum is proposed to explain our results. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Selective plasma etching and hydrogen plasma treatment were introduced in turn to improve field emission characteristics of screen-printed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) cold cathode, which was prepared by using slurry of mixture of multi-wall CNTs, organic vehicles and inorganic binder, i.e. silicon dioxide sol. The results show that selective plasma etching process could effectively remove parts of surface inorganic vehicle (SiO2) layer and expose more smooth and clean CNTs on cathode surface, which could significantly decrease the operating field of CNTs cathode. There are some nanoparticles emerging on the out of CNTs wall after hydrogen plasma treatment, which are equivalent to increase field emission point of cathode. At the same time, these nanoparticles can increase the local electric field of CNTs, which can decrease operating voltage of CNTs cathode and improve uniformity field emission.

Abstract:The uniformity in field emission from a carbon nanotube film is very important to many applications. A study has been carried out to obtain uniform emission from multiwall carbon nanotube (CNT) films by electrical treatment. The electrical treatment is based on local vacuum breakdown of CNTs under direct-current conditions. The optimal current density was found, under which the best effect of the treatment may be observed. The physical mechanism responsible for the effect of local vacuum breakdown of CNTs on emission uniformity was investigated.

Abstract:Making use of graphite as electrode,we have prepared carbon nanotubes by the direct current arc-discharge method.The experimental results indicate that the carbon nanotubes are generated on the front-end surface and within the carbon accretion on the cathode.Using SEM adn TEM,we find no significant difference for the shapes and the structures of the generated carbon nanotubes when the pressure and the direct arc-current change.Under the pressure of hydrogen gas 11999Pa and direct arc-current 60A,we obtain a large number of straight and long carbon nanotubes with uniform calibers.

Abstract:Field emission characteristics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated in this paper.CNTs were produced by the catalytic decomposition of hydrocarbons - propylene on the nickel films. The SEM images showed that CNTs were quite uniform and disordered; the average diameter is about 50nn. The measurements were performed in a vacuum chamber at the pressure of 10(-7) torr. The results showed the typical voltage-current characteristics, which qualitatively followed the conventional Fowler-Nordheim equation. In conclusion, CNTs appear to be an excellent field emission cathode material with stable and reproducible field emission characteristics and a lower onset field.

Abstract:Field emission properties of B-doped carbon nanotubes are investigated from both theoretical and experimental standpoints. Using tight-binding and ab initio calculations, it is observed that B-saturating tip edges of carbon nanotubes induce the presence of large peaks within the local density of states (LDOS) located in an energy region close to the Fermi level (Ef). These localized states suggest a field emission enhancement for the B-doped tubes. In addition, ab initio theoretical results indicate that the work function for B-doped tubes is 1.7 eV lower when compared to pure carbon-terminated nanotubes. Experimentally, it is found that B-doped tubes, which are produced by arc discharge techniques and contain B mainly at the tips, exhibit stable electron field emission at lower turn-on voltages (1.4 V/mum) when compared to pure single- and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (2.8 and 3.0 V/mum, respectively) measured under the same conditions. We strongly believe our results will bring new insights in the fabrication of stable field emission sources.

Abstract:Despite the promising field emission properties, as-grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are far from perfect and need improvement. We report on the field electron emission properties of hafnium coated CNTs. The result shows hafnium carbide (HfC) can be formed on the surface of CNT films at an annealing temperature of 1200 degrees C. This treatment improves the field emission current density, emission uniformity and emission stability of CNT films. The improvement of field emission by Hf coating on the CNT surface benefits from the formation of HfC, which is conductive, inert, robust and of low work function. This approach may provide an effective method for the modification of the field emission of CNTs.

Abstract:The field electron emission behaviors from carbon nanotube (CNT) film were studied under pulse-voltage excitation. The transparent anode technique was used to measure the field electron emission current of the carbon nanotube films. It was found that the amplitude of emission currents of the films under the pulsed field decreases with increasing frequency of input pulse, but increases with decreasing duty ratio of input pulse.

Abstract:Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition is an extremely versatile technique for directly growing multiwalled carbon nanotubes onto various substrates. We will demonstrate the deposition of vertically aligned nanotube arrays, sparsely or densely populated nanotube forests, and precisely patterned arrays of nanotubes. The high-aspect ratio nanotubes (~50 nm in diameter and 5 microns long) produced are metallic in nature and direct contact electrical measurements reveal that each nanotube has a current carrying capacity of 10 7 -10 8 A/cm 2 , making them excellent candidates as field emission sources. We examined the field emission characteristics of dense nanotube forests as well as sparse nanotube forests and found that the sparse forests had significantly lower turn-on fields and higher emission currents. This is due to a reduction in the field enhancement of the nanotubes due to electric field shielding from adjacent nanotubes in the dense nanotube arrays. We thus fabricated a uniform array of single nanotubes to attempt to overcome these issues and will present the field emission characteristics of this.

Abstract:Field emission results from a new form of carbon thin film are reported. The films contain carbon nanoparticles (nanotubes, "onions" and "eggs") within an amorphous carbon matrix and are deposited using a carbon are with a localized high-pressure gas region of He of N-2. The films formed in an N-2 environment have a nitrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:N) matrix and show clear Fowler-Nordheim-type metallic field emission characteristics. The field emission is very similar to that obtained from pure, randomly oriented multi-wall and single-wall nanotube films. It is proposed that the new a-C:N/nanoparticle films emit electrons through conducting channels formed in the film, subsurface field emission into the a-C:N matrix and hot electron surmounting of the surface potential barrier between the a-C:N and vacuum. Field enhancement factors of over 1000 are calculated for the thin film emitters when the nanoparticle work function is taken as 5 eV. This class of a-C:N/ nanoparticle film has the potential to be a thin film equivalent to carbon nanotubes in terms of field emission.

Abstract:Field emission properties of partly Fe-filled carbon nanotubes (FCNTs) treated with different plasmas have been studied. Super low turn-on (0.24V/μm) and threshold (0.6V/μm) electric fields are identified upon nitrogen plasma treatment for 60min. The field-enhancement factor, as high as 4.8×104, can be attributed to the plasma-induced structural defects and the unique characteristics of thin walled FCNTs with filled Fe nanowires. A model has been proposed to understand the effects of plasma on the CNTs.

Abstract:A carbon nanotube (CNT) composite cold cathode was studied for field emission display application. The CNT composite cold cathode was composed of CNTs and silicon dioxide binder. Field emission from CNT composite cold cathode with different CNT contents was studied. It was found that with increase in CNT contents, the threshold field decreased. The conductance of the composite cathode was measured and with increasing CNT content, there was a critical CNT content where the conductance increased several orders of magnitude. Plasma etching using SF(6) as the etchant was adopted to treat the cathode. Improvement in emission uniformity was achieved. It was also found that after post-treatment the threshold field of the cathode decreased. The morphology of the etched cathode was analyzed and the improvement of uniformity and lowering of the threshold field was attributed to the exposure of CNTs after etching.

Abstract:Electron field emission properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) films fabricated by vacuum filtration were studied. CNT films of different filtration volumes (from 10 to 200ml) were transferred to conductive substrates, and we studied their electron field emission performance. When the filtration volume was less than 50ml, the CNT film appeared transparent. The optimum result (75ml sample) was achieved with a low turn-on field of 0.93V/μm (at 1μA/cm2) and a high field enhancement factor β of ∼9720, and showed stable emission after aging for 10h. The CNT film transfer process was explained by interfacial energy properties.

Abstract:Summary form only given. We present a simple technology for the fabrication of CNTs films cathode by utilizing method of rubbing CNT powders onto the polished substrates. The metallic substrates were polished by 10000 mesh white fused alumina powder at first. Then, the CNTs were rubbed on them. After that process, the metallic substrates were covered by CNTs films uniformly and firmly, as characterized by scanning electron microscope and scotch tape peeling tests. The field-electron-emission properties of such films cathodes were investigate under the vacuum of 10-5 Pa. The experimental results showed that the field-emission image of the films was nearly uniform and the emission current was considerably large. The turn-on field (the field at an emission current density of 10μA/cm ) was 3.4V/μm. The emission current density of 1.31mA/cm was obtained at the electric field of 6.1 V/μm, and emission current was almost stable in more than 60 minutes under about ImA/cm .
