Abstract:In this paper, we discuss some trellis properties for codes over finite Abelian groups, and prove that for any biproper p-basis of a group code, their atomic spans and orders of the first and last nonzero components of vectors in the biproper p-basis are unique. This is the generalization of the corresponding trellis property for a linear code over a field. We also discuss difficulties when we try to generalize the theory of a tail-biting trellis over a field into that of a tail-biting trellis over a finite Abelian group.

Abstract:Tail-biting trellis representations of block codes are investigated. We develop some elementary theory, and present several intriguing examples, which we hope will stimulate further developments in this field. In particular, we construct a 16-state 12-section structurally invariant tail-biting trellis for the (24, 12, 8) binary Golay code. This tail-biting trellis representation is minimal: it simultaneously minimizes all conceivable measures of state complexity. Moreover, it compares favorably with the minimal conventional 12-section trellis for the Golay code, which has 256 states at its midpoint, or with the best quasi-cyclic representation of this code, which leads to a 64-state tail-biting trellis. Unwrapping this tail-biting trellis produces a periodically time-varying 16-state rate-1/2 "convolutional Golay code" with d=8, which has attractive performance/complexity properties. We furthermore show that the (6, 3, 4) quaternary hexacode has a minimal 8-state group tail-biting trellis, even though it has no such linear trellis over F/sub 4/. Minimal tail-biting trellises are also constructed for the (8, 4, 4) binary Hamming code, the (4, 2, 3) ternary tetracode, the (4, 2, 3) code over F/sub 4/, and the Z/sub 4/-linear (8. 4, 4) octacode.

Abstract:We investigate the constructions of tail-biting trellises for linear block codes introduced by Koetter/Vardy (2003) and Nori/Shankar (2006). For a given code we will define the sets of characteristic generators more generally than by Koetter/Vardy and we will investigate how the choice of characteristic generators affects the set of resulting product trellises, called KV-trellises. Furthermore, we will show that each KV-trellis is a BCJR-trellis, defined in a slightly stronger sense than by Nori/Shankar, and that the latter are always non-mergeable. Finally, we will address a duality conjecture of Koetter/Vardy by making use of a dualization technique of BCJR-trellises and prove the conjecture for minimal trellises.

Abstract:This paper focuses on dualizing tail-biting trellises, particularly KV-trellises. These trellises are based on characteristic generators, as introduced by Koetter/Vardy (2003), and may be regarded as a natural generalization of minimal conventional trellises, even though they are not necessarily minimal. Two dualization techniques will be investigated: the local dualization, introduced by Forney (2001) for general normal graphs, and a linear algebra based dualization tailored to the specific class of tail-biting BCJR-trellises, introduced by Nori/Shankar (2006). It turns out that, in general, the BCJR-dual is a subtrellis of the local dual, while for KV-trellises these two coincide. Furthermore, making use of both the BCJR-construction and the local dualization, it will be shown that for each complete set of characteristic generators of a code there exists a complete set of characteristic generators of the dual code such that their resulting KV-trellises are dual to each other if paired suitably. This proves a stronger version of a conjecture formulated by Koetter/Vardy.

Characteristic Matrices and Trellis Reduction for Tail-Biting Convolutional Codes

Abstract:Basic properties of a characteristic matrix for a tail-biting convolutional code are investigated. A tail-biting convolutional code can be regarded as a linear block code. Since the corresponding scalar generator matrix Gt has a kind of cyclic structure, an associated characteristic matrix also has a cyclic structure, from which basic properties of a characteristic matrix are obtained. Next, using the derived results, we discuss the possibility of trellis reduction for a given tail-biting convolutional code. There are cases where we can find a scalar generator matrix Gs equivalent to Gt based on a characteristic matrix. In this case, if the polynomial generator matrix corresponding to Gs has been reduced, or can be reduced by using appropriate transformations, then trellis reduction for the original tail-biting convolutional code is realized. In many cases, the polynomial generator matrix corresponding to Gs has a monomial factor in some column and is reduced by dividing the column by the factor. Note that this transformation corresponds to cyclically shifting the associated code subsequence (a tail-biting path is regarded as a code sequence) to the left. Thus if we allow partial cyclic shifts of a tail-biting path, then trellis reduction is accomplished.

Abstract:In this letter, we discussed some properties of characteristic generators for a finite Abelian group code, proved that any two characteristic generators can not start (end) at the same position and have the same order of the starting (ending) components simultaneously, and that the number of all characteristic generators can be directly computed from the group code itself. These properties are exactly the generalization of the corresponding trellis properties of a linear code over a field.

Abstract:Based on the two-dimensional (2-D) weight distribution of tail-biting codes we give guidelines how to choose tail-biting component codes that are especially suited for parallel concatenated coding schemes. Employing these guidelines, we tabulate tail-biting codes of different rate, length, and complexity. The performance of parallel concatenated block codes (PCBCs) using iterative (turbo) decoding is evaluated by simulation and bounds are calculated in order to study their asymptotic performance.

Abstract:Tail-biting codes are considered as component codes for parallel concatenated block codes. Based on the two-dimensional weight distribution of tail-biting codes, we calculate the minimum distance of the parallel concatenated code and give guidelines on how to choose good tail-biting component codes. We show how to encode tail-biting codes using systematic feedback encoders, which is an important design criterion. The performance of codes with different rate, length, and complexity using iterative (turbo) decoding is evaluated by simulation.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the reduction of error-trellises for tail-biting convolutional codes. In the case where some column of a parity-check matrix has a monomial factor (with indeterminate D), we show that the associated tail-biting error-trellis can be reduced by cyclically shifting the corresponding error-subsequence by l (the power of D) time units. We see that the resulting reduced error-trellis is again tail-biting. Moreover, we show that reduction is also possible using backward-shifted error-subsequences.

Abstract:The Conti-Boston factorization theorem (CBFT) for linear tail-biting trellis realizations is extended to group realizations with a new and simpler proof, based on a controller granule decomposition of the behavior and known controllability results for group realizations. Further controllability results are given; e.g., a trellis realization is controllable if and only if its top (controllability) granule is trivial.

Abstract:Tail-biting codes are efficient coding techniques to eliminate the rate loss in conventional known-tail convolutional codes at a cost of increased complexity in decoders. In addition, tail-biting trellis representation of block codes makes the trellis-based maximum likelihood (ML) decoder desirable for implementation. Circular Viterbi algorithm (CVA) is introduced to decode the tail-biting codes for its decoding efficiency. However, its decoding process suffers from circular traps, which degrade the decoding efficiency. In this paper, we propose an efficient checking rule for the detection of circular traps. Based on this rule, a novel maximum likelihood (ML) decoding algorithm for tail-biting codes is presented. On tail-biting trellis, computational complexity and memory consumption of this decoder are significantly reduced comparing to other available ML decoders, such as the two-phase ML decoder. To further reduce the decoding complexity, we propose a new near-optimal decoding algorithm based on a simplified trap detection strategy. The performance of the above algorithms is validated with simulation.

Abstract:A class of linear codes with good parameters is constructed in this correspondence. It turns out that linear codes of this class are subcodes of the subfield subcodes of Goppa's geometry codes. In particular, we find 61 improvements on Brouwer's table based on our codes.

Abstract:Two new classes of skew codes over a finite field $\F$ are proposed, called skew convolutional codes and skew trellis codes. These two classes are defined by, respectively, left or right sub-modules over the skew fields of fractions of skew polynomials over $\F$. The skew convolutional codes can be represented as periodic time-varying ordinary convolutional codes. The skew trellis codes are in general nonlinear over $\F$. Every code from both classes has a code trellis and can be decoded by Viterbi or BCJR algorithms.

Abstract:Tail-biting convolutional codes (TBCC) provide an efficient method to eliminate the rate loss caused by the known-tail encoding. To simplify the decoder design, circular Viterbi algorithm (CVA) has been proposed by recording and repeating the received block of (soft) symbols beyond the block boundary and continuing Viterbi decoding. However, CVA does not converge in the presence of circular trap. A checking rule is proposed for detecting the circular trap in existing CVA. Based on this rule, an efficient CVA-based decoding algorithm is obtained for tail-biting codes, which exhibits near-optimal performance for both short and long tail-biting codes. This new scheme provides faster convergence speed than the conventional CVA without increasing in complexity and storage space.

Abstract:This paper builds a novel bridge between algebraic coding theory and mathematical knot theory, with applications in both directions. We give methods to construct error-correcting codes starting from the colorings of a knot, describing through a series of results how the properties of the knot translate into code parameters. We show that knots can be used to obtain error-correcting codes with prescribed parameters and an efficient decoding algorithm.
