Abstract:Trellis representations of linear block codes not only illustrate code structure, but also often lead to efficient trellis-based decoding algorithms. In this paper, we try to find the minimal trellises for two important classes of linear codes, i.e., cyclic codes and quasi-cyclic codes.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive guide to designing minimal trellises for both non-degenerate and degenerate decoding of quantum stabilizer codes. For non-degenerate decoding, various strategies are explored, leveraging insights from classical rectangular codes to minimize the complexity associated with the non-degenerate maximum likelihood error estimation using the Viterbi algorithm. Additionally, novel techniques for constructing minimal multi-goal trellises for degenerate decoding are introduced, including a merging algorithm, a Shannon-product approach, and the BCJR-Wolf method. The study establishes essential properties of multi-goal trellises and provides bounds on the decoding complexity using the sum-product Viterbi decoding algorithm. These advancements decrease the decoding complexity by a factor $\mathcal{O}(n)$, where $n$ is the code length. Finally, the paper applies these results to CSS codes and demonstrates a reduction in complexity by independently applying degenerate decoding to $X$ and $Z$ errors.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of linear codes defined by characteristic functions of certain subsets of a finite field. We derive a sufficient and necessary condition for such a code to be a minimal linear code by a character-theoretical approach. We obtain new three-weight or four-weight minimal linear codes that do not satisfy the Ashikhmin-Barg condition by using partial difference sets. We show that our construction yields minimal linear codes that do not arise from cutting vectorial blocking sets, and also discuss their applications in secret sharing schemes.

Abstract:Tail-biting trellis representations of block codes are investigated. We develop some elementary theory, and present several intriguing examples, which we hope will stimulate further developments in this field. In particular, we construct a 16-state 12-section structurally invariant tail-biting trellis for the (24, 12, 8) binary Golay code. This tail-biting trellis representation is minimal: it simultaneously minimizes all conceivable measures of state complexity. Moreover, it compares favorably with the minimal conventional 12-section trellis for the Golay code, which has 256 states at its midpoint, or with the best quasi-cyclic representation of this code, which leads to a 64-state tail-biting trellis. Unwrapping this tail-biting trellis produces a periodically time-varying 16-state rate-1/2 "convolutional Golay code" with d=8, which has attractive performance/complexity properties. We furthermore show that the (6, 3, 4) quaternary hexacode has a minimal 8-state group tail-biting trellis, even though it has no such linear trellis over F/sub 4/. Minimal tail-biting trellises are also constructed for the (8, 4, 4) binary Hamming code, the (4, 2, 3) ternary tetracode, the (4, 2, 3) code over F/sub 4/, and the Z/sub 4/-linear (8. 4, 4) octacode.

Abstract:Trellis decoders are a general decoding technique first applied to qubit-based quantum error correction codes by Ollivier and Tillich in 2006. Here, we improve the scalability and practicality of their theory, show that it has strong structure, extend the results using classical coding theory as a guide, and demonstrate a canonical form from which the structural properties of the decoding graph may be computed. The resulting formalism is valid for any prime-dimensional quantum system. The modified decoder works for any stabilizer code and separates into two parts: 1) a one-time offline computation that builds a compact graphical representation of the normalizer of the code, and 2) a quick, parallel, online query of the resulting vertices using the Viterbi algorithm. We show the utility of trellis decoding by applying it to four high-density length-20 stabilizer codes for depolarizing noise and the well-studied Steane, rotated surface, and 4.8.8/6.6.6 color codes for only noise. Numerical simulations demonstrate a 20% improvement in the code-capacity threshold for color codes with boundaries by avoiding the mapping from color codes to surface codes. We identify trellis edge number as a key metric of difficulty of decoding, allowing us to quantify the advantage of single-axis ( or ) decoding for Calderbank–Steane–Shor codes and block decoding for concatenated codes.

Minimal Ternary Linear Codes from Vectorial Functions

Abstract:The study on minimal linear codes has received great attention due to their significant applications in secret sharing schemes and secure two-party computation. Until now, numerous minimal linear codes have been discovered. However, to the best of our knowledge, no infinite family of minimal ternary linear codes was found from vectorial functions. In this paper, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for a large class of ternary linear codes from vectorial functions such that those codes are minimal. Based on that, we construct several minimal ternary linear codes with three-weight from vectorial regular plateaued functions, and determine their weight distributions. Moreover, we also give a necessary and sufficient condition for a large family of ternary linear codes from vectorial functions such that the codes are minimal and violate the AB condition simultaneously. According to this characterization, we find several minimal ternary linear codes violating the AB condition. Notably, our results show that our method can be applied to solve a problem on minimal linear codes proposed by Li et al.

Abstract:Linear codes play a central role in coding theory and have applications in several branches of mathematics. For error correction purposes the minimum Hamming distance should be as large as possible. Linear codes related to applications in Galois Geometry often require a certain divisibility of the occurring weights. In this paper we present an algorithmic framework for the classification of linear codes over finite fields with restricted sets of weights. The underlying algorithms are based on lattice point enumeration and integer linear programming. We present new enumeration and non-existence results for projective two-weight codes, divisible codes, and additive $\mathbb{F}_4$-codes.

Linear Codes from Projective Linear Anticodes Revisited

Abstract:An anticode ${\bf C} \subset {\bf F}_q^n$ with the diameter $\delta$ is a code in ${\bf F}_q^n$ such that the distance between any two distinct codewords in ${\bf C}$ is at most $\delta$. The famous Erdös-Kleitman bound for a binary anticode ${\bf C}$ of the length $n$ and the diameter $\delta$ asserts that $$|{\bf C}| \leq \Sigma_{i=0}^{\frac{\delta}{2}} \displaystyle{n \choose i}.$$ In this paper, we give an antiGriesmer bound for $q$-ary projective linear anticodes, which is stronger than the above Erdös-Kleitman bound for binary anticodes. The antiGriesmer bound is a lower bound on diameters of projective linear anticodes. From some known projective linear anticodes, we construct some linear codes with optimal or near optimal minimum distances. A complementary theorem constructing infinitely many new projective linear $(t+1)$-weight code from a known $t$-weight linear code is presented. Then many new optimal or almost optimal few-weight linear codes are given and their weight distributions are determined. As a by-product, we also construct several infinite families of three-weight binary linear codes, which lead to $l$-strongly regular graphs for each odd integer $l \geq 3$.

Abstract:Two new classes of skew codes over a finite field $\F$ are proposed, called skew convolutional codes and skew trellis codes. These two classes are defined by, respectively, left or right sub-modules over the skew fields of fractions of skew polynomials over $\F$. The skew convolutional codes can be represented as periodic time-varying ordinary convolutional codes. The skew trellis codes are in general nonlinear over $\F$. Every code from both classes has a code trellis and can be decoded by Viterbi or BCJR algorithms.

Abstract:Coding theory is one of ways to construct ideal access structures. However, in general, determining the ideal access structures of the secret sharing schemes based on linear codes is very hard. According to the concept of minimal liner codes we proposed, this paper concentrates on irreducible cyclic codes and constructs the ideal access structures of the schemes based on the duals of minimal irreducible cyclic codes. In order to study the conditions whether several types of irreducible cyclic codes are minimal, we investigate the weight enumerators of certain irreducible cyclic codes by means of cyclotomic classes and Gaussian periods. On the basis of our aforementioned studies, we obtain ideal access structures and show the corresponding examples through programming.

Abstract:Trellis diagrams of lattices and the Viterbi algorithm can be used for decoding. It has been known that the numbers of states and labels at every level of any finite trellis diagrams of a lattice L and its dual L* under the same coordinate system are the same. In the paper, we present concrete expressions of the numbers of distinct paths in the trellis diagrams of L and L* under the same coordinate system, which are more concrete than Theorem 2 of [1]. We also give a relation between the numbers of edges in the trellis diagrams of L and L*. Furthermore, we provide the upper bounds on the state numbers of a trellis diagram of the lattice L1 x L2 by the state numbers of trellis diagrams of lattices L1 and L2.

Abstract:Recently, much progress has been made to construct minimal linear codes due to their preference in secret sharing schemes and secure two-party computation. In this paper, we put forward a new method to construct minimal linear codes by using vectorial Boolean functions. Firstly, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a generic class of linear codes from vectorial Boolean functions to be minimal. Based on that, we derive some new three-weight minimal linear codes and determine their weight distributions. Secondly, by studying deeply the construction of linear codes in this paper, we find a necessary and sufficient condition of the linear codes to be minimal and to be violated the AB condition. As a result, we get three infinite families of minimal linear codes violating the AB condition. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that minimal liner codes are constructed from vectorial Boolean functions. Compared the parameters with other known ones, in general the minimal liner codes obtained in this paper have higher dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper, new enumerating functions for linear codes are defined, including the triangle enumerating function and the tetrahedron enumerating function, both of which can be computed using a trellis-based algorithm over polynomial rings. The computational complexity is dominated by the complexity of the trellis. In addition, we show that these new enumerating functions can be used to improve existing performance bounds on the maximum likelihood decoding.

Abstract:Linear codes play a crucial role in various fields of engineering and mathematics, including data storage, communication, cryptography, and combinatorics. Minimal linear codes, a subset of linear codes, are particularly essential for designing effective secret sharing schemes. In this paper, we introduce several classes of minimal binary linear codes by carefully selecting appropriate Boolean functions. These functions belong to a renowned class of Boolean functions, namely, the general Maiorana–McFarland class. We employ a method first proposed by Ding et al. (IEEE Trans Inf Theory 64(10):6536–6545, 2018) to construct minimal codes violating the Ashikhmin–Barg bound (wide minimal codes) by using Krawtchouk polynomials. The lengths, dimensions, and weight distributions of the obtained codes are determined using the Walsh spectrum distribution of the chosen Boolean functions. Our findings demonstrate that a vast majority of the newly constructed codes are wide minimal. Furthermore, our proposed codes exhibit a significantly larger minimum distance, in some cases, compared to some existing similar constructions. Finally, we address this method, based on Krawtchouk polynomials, more generally, and highlight certain generic properties related to it. These general results offer insights into the scope of this approach.

Abstract:Linear codes with a few weights can be applied to communication, consumer electronics and data storage system. In addition, the weight hierarchy of linear codes has many applications such as on the type II wire-tap channel, dealing with $t$-resilient functions and trellis or branch complexity of linear codes and so on. In this paper, we first present a formula for computing the weight hierarchies of linear codes constructed by the generalized method of defining sets. Then, we construct two classes of binary linear codes with a few weights and determine their weight distributions and weight hierarchies completely. Some codes of them can be used in secret sharing schemes.

Abstract:Linear codes are widely studied in coding theory as they have nice applications in distributed storage, combinatorics, lattices, cryptography and so on. Constructing linear codes with desirable properties is an interesting research topic. In this paper, based on the augmentation technique, we present two families of linear codes from some functions over finite fields. The first family of linear codes is constructed from monomial functions over finite fields. The locality of them is determined and the weight distributions of two subfamilies of the codes are also given. An infinite family of locally recoverable codes which are at least almost optimal and some optimal recoverable codes are obtained from the linear codes. In particular, the two subfamilies of the codes are proved to be both optimally or almost optimally extendable and self-orthogonal. The second family of linear codes is constructed from weakly regular bent functions over finite fields and their weight distribution is determined. This family of codes is proved to have locality 3 for some cases and is conjectured to have locality 2 for other cases. Particularly, two families of optimal locally recoverable codes are derived from the linear codes. Besides, this family of codes is also proved to be both optimally or almost optimally extendable and self-orthogonal.

Abstract:J. Y. Hyun, et al. (Des. Codes Cryptogr., vol. 88, pp. 2475-2492, 2020) constructed some optimal and minimal binary linear codes generated by one or two order ideals in hierarchical posets of two levels. At the end of their paper, they left an open problem: it also should be interesting to investigate the cases of more than two orders in hierarchical posets with two levels or many levels. In this paper, we use the geometric method to determine the minimality of linear codes generated by any orders in hierarchical posets with two levels. We generalize their cases of one or two orders to any orders and determine the minimality of the linear codes completely.
