Abstract:Trellis diagrams of lattices and the Viterbi algorithm can be used for decoding. It has been known that the numbers of states and labels at every level of any finite trellis diagrams of a lattice L and its dual L* under the same coordinate system are the same. In the paper, we present concrete expressions of the numbers of distinct paths in the trellis diagrams of L and L* under the same coordinate system, which are more concrete than Theorem 2 of [1]. We also give a relation between the numbers of edges in the trellis diagrams of L and L*. Furthermore, we provide the upper bounds on the state numbers of a trellis diagram of the lattice L1 x L2 by the state numbers of trellis diagrams of lattices L1 and L2.

Abstract:It is well known that the trellises of lattices can be employed to decode efficiently. It was proved in [1] and [2] that if a lattice L has a finite trellis under the coordinate system {Wi}i=1n, then there must exist a basis (b1,b2, ···, bn) of L such that Wi = span(bi) for 1 ≤ i ≤ n. In this letter, we prove this important result in a completely different method, and give an efficient method to compute all bases of this type.

Abstract:Trellis decoders are a general decoding technique first applied to qubit-based quantum error correction codes by Ollivier and Tillich in 2006. Here, we improve the scalability and practicality of their theory, show that it has strong structure, extend the results using classical coding theory as a guide, and demonstrate a canonical form from which the structural properties of the decoding graph may be computed. The resulting formalism is valid for any prime-dimensional quantum system. The modified decoder works for any stabilizer code and separates into two parts: 1) a one-time offline computation that builds a compact graphical representation of the normalizer of the code, and 2) a quick, parallel, online query of the resulting vertices using the Viterbi algorithm. We show the utility of trellis decoding by applying it to four high-density length-20 stabilizer codes for depolarizing noise and the well-studied Steane, rotated surface, and 4.8.8/6.6.6 color codes for only noise. Numerical simulations demonstrate a 20% improvement in the code-capacity threshold for color codes with boundaries by avoiding the mapping from color codes to surface codes. We identify trellis edge number as a key metric of difficulty of decoding, allowing us to quantify the advantage of single-axis ( or ) decoding for Calderbank–Steane–Shor codes and block decoding for concatenated codes.

Abstract:We present trellis networks, a new architecture for sequence modeling. On the one hand, a trellis network is a temporal convolutional network with special structure, characterized by weight tying across depth and direct injection of the input into deep layers. On the other hand, we show that truncated recurrent networks are equivalent to trellis networks with special sparsity structure in their weight matrices. Thus trellis networks with general weight matrices generalize truncated recurrent networks. We leverage these connections to design high-performing trellis networks that absorb structural and algorithmic elements from both recurrent and convolutional models. Experiments demonstrate that trellis networks outperform the current state of the art methods on a variety of challenging benchmarks, including word-level language modeling and character-level language modeling tasks, and stress tests designed to evaluate long-term memory retention. Abstract:In this paper, we discuss some trellis properties for codes over finite Abelian groups, and prove that for any biproper p-basis of a group code, their atomic spans and orders of the first and last nonzero components of vectors in the biproper p-basis are unique. This is the generalization of the corresponding trellis property for a linear code over a field. We also discuss difficulties when we try to generalize the theory of a tail-biting trellis over a field into that of a tail-biting trellis over a finite Abelian group.
Minimal Trellises for non-Degenerate and Degenerate Decoding of Quantum Stabilizer Codes

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive guide to designing minimal trellises for both non-degenerate and degenerate decoding of quantum stabilizer codes. For non-degenerate decoding, various strategies are explored, leveraging insights from classical rectangular codes to minimize the complexity associated with the non-degenerate maximum likelihood error estimation using the Viterbi algorithm. Additionally, novel techniques for constructing minimal multi-goal trellises for degenerate decoding are introduced, including a merging algorithm, a Shannon-product approach, and the BCJR-Wolf method. The study establishes essential properties of multi-goal trellises and provides bounds on the decoding complexity using the sum-product Viterbi decoding algorithm. These advancements decrease the decoding complexity by a factor $\mathcal{O}(n)$, where $n$ is the code length. Finally, the paper applies these results to CSS codes and demonstrates a reduction in complexity by independently applying degenerate decoding to $X$ and $Z$ errors.

Abstract:Lattice is widely used as a kind of the search results in Large Vocabulary Continuous Speech Recognition (LVCSR). A new lattice-generation algorithm is presented in this paper. The algorithm is based on a classical forward-backward decoding method, which is proved to be highly efficient. Moreover, some improvements have been done to satisfy the requirements in the lattice decoding. Two Chinese mandarin large-scale speech recognition tasks are used to evaluate the proposed algorithm and the experimental results show that our algorithm can both improve decoding speed and save decoding space significantly without sacrificing the recognition accuracy, compared with the widely used Lattice decoding method as.

Abstract:Two new classes of skew codes over a finite field $\F$ are proposed, called skew convolutional codes and skew trellis codes. These two classes are defined by, respectively, left or right sub-modules over the skew fields of fractions of skew polynomials over $\F$. The skew convolutional codes can be represented as periodic time-varying ordinary convolutional codes. The skew trellis codes are in general nonlinear over $\F$. Every code from both classes has a code trellis and can be decoded by Viterbi or BCJR algorithms.

Abstract:An efficient, low-complexity, soft-output detector for general lattices is presented, based on their Tanner graph (TG) representations. Closest-point searches in lattices can be performed as non-binary belief propagation on associated TGs; soft-information output is naturally generated in the process; the algorithm requires no backtrack (cf. classic sphere decoding), and extracts extrinsic information. A lattice's coding gain enables equivalence relations between lattice points, which can be thereby partitioned in cosets. Total and extrinsic a posteriori probabilities at the detector's output further enable the use of soft detection information in iterative schemes. The algorithm is illustrated via two scenarios that transmit a 32-point, uncoded super-orthogonal (SO) constellation for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, carved from an 8-dimensional non-orthogonal lattice (a direct sum of two 4-dimensional checkerboard lattice): it achieves maximum likelihood performance in quasistatic fading; and, performs close to interference-free transmission, and identically to list sphere decoding, in independent fading with coordinate interleaving and iterative equalization and detection. Latter scenario outperforms former despite the absence of forward error correction coding---because the inherent lattice coding gain allows for the refining of extrinsic information. The lattice constellation is the same as the one employed in the SO space-time trellis codes first introduced for 2-by-2 MIMO by Ionescu et al., then independently by Jafarkhani and Seshadri. Complexity is log-linear in lattice dimensionality, vs. cubic in sphere decoders.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose new classes of trapdoor functions to solve the bounded distance decoding problem in lattices. Specifically, we construct lattices based on properties of polynomials for which the bounded distance decoding problem is hard to solve unless some trapdoor information is revealed. We thoroughly analyze the security of our proposed functions using state-of-the-art attacks and results on lattice reductions. Finally, we describe how our functions can be used to design quantum-safe encryption schemes with reasonable public key sizes. Our encryption schemes are efficient with respect to key generation, encryption and decryption.

Abstract:We give the condition of isomorphisms between tilting graphs and cluster-tilting graphs of hereditary algebras. As a conclusion, it is proved that a graph is a skeleton graph of Stasheff polytope if and only if it is both the tilting graph of a hereditary algebra and also the cluster-tilting graph of another hereditary algebra. At last, when comparing such uniformity, the geometric realizations of simplicial complexes associated with tilting modules and cluster-tilting objects are discussed respectively.

Abstract:We design the first efficient algorithms and prove new combinatorial bounds for list decoding tensor products of codes and interleaved codes. We show that for {\em every} code, the ratio of its list decoding radius to its minimum distance stays unchanged under the tensor product operation (rather than squaring, as one might expect). This gives the first efficient list decoders and new combinatorial bounds for some natural codes including multivariate polynomials where the degree in each variable is bounded. We show that for {\em every} code, its list decoding radius remains unchanged under $m$-wise interleaving for an integer $m$. This generalizes a recent result of Dinur et al \cite{DGKS}, who proved such a result for interleaved Hadamard codes (equivalently, linear transformations). Using the notion of generalized Hamming weights, we give better list size bounds for {\em both} tensoring and interleaving of binary linear codes. By analyzing the weight distribution of these codes, we reduce the task of bounding the list size to bounding the number of close-by low-rank codewords. For decoding linear transformations, using rank-reduction together with other ideas, we obtain list size bounds that are tight over small fields.

Abstract:D 8-state trellis encoding with Viterbi decoding can theoretically provide a coding gain of 6 dB, which is used to compensate the loss of noise margin due to PAM-5. The procedure of Viterbi decoding for 4D 8-state trellis encoding is described in detail. Effects of different trellis depths, quantization precision and rescale method for path metric overflow on the performance of the Viterbi decoder are simulated in Matlab.As a result, trellis depth, quantization preciosion and rescale method are determined for practical VLSI implementation of the Viterbi decoder.

Abstract:For a certain class of functions, the distribution of the function values can be calculated in the trellis or a sub-trellis. The forward/backward recursion known from the BCJR algorithm is generalized to compute the moments of these distributions. In analogy to the symbol probabilities, by introducing a constraint at a certain depth in the trellis we obtain symbol moments. These moments are required for an efficient implementation of the discriminated belief propagation algorithm in [2], and can furthermore be utilized to compute conditional entropies in the trellis. The moment computation algorithm has the same asymptotic complexity as the BCJR algorithm. It is applicable to any commutative semi-ring, thus actually providing a generalization of the Viterbi algorithm.

Abstract:Lattice-based Cryptography is considered to have the characteristics of classical computers and quantum attack resistance. We will design various graphic lattices and matrix lattices based on knowledge of graph theory and topological coding, since many problems of graph theory can be expressed or illustrated by (colored) star-graphic lattices. A new pair of the leaf-splitting operation and the leaf-coinciding operation will be introduced, and we combine graph colorings and graph labellings to design particular proper total colorings as tools to build up various graphic lattices, graph homomorphism lattice, graphic group lattices and Topcode-matrix lattices. Graphic group lattices and (directed) Topcode-matrix lattices enable us to build up connections between traditional lattices and graphic lattices. We present mathematical problems encountered in researching graphic lattices, some problems are: Tree topological authentication, Decompose graphs into Hanzi-graphs, Number String Decomposition Problem, $(p,s)$-gracefully total numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, using compute-and-forward as an example, we provide an overview of constructions of lattices from codes that possess the right algebraic structures for harnessing interference. This includes Construction A, Construction D, and Construction $\pi A$ (previously called product construction) recently proposed by the authors. While most of the results in this paper have been available in the literature, we discuss two generalizations where the first one is a general construction of lattices named Construction $\pi D$ subsuming the above three constructions as special cases and the second one is to go beyond principal ideal domains and build lattices over algebraic integers.
