Abstract:We present trellis codes designed to perform well in the context of periodic symbol puncturing. Progressive puncturing of these new trellis codes allows unequal error protection or continuous adaptation of the information rate to match channel and traffic conditions. Deep fades or strong interference also may be considered as a form of puncturing. For these environments, we present examples of trellis codes that are robust to all puncturing patterns that maintain non-negative effective redundancy. This robustness extends even to puncturing patterns that reduce the effective redundancy to zero.

Abstract:This letter studies the optimization of asymmetric constellations for trellis-coded modulation (TCM). Unlike the conventional criterion of maximizing the free Euclidean distance, the criterion here is to minimize the bit error rate (BER) of TCM systems. The letter presents an easy way to derive the BER upper bound for any TCM codes, and proposes the method for designing optimum asymmetric constellations by minimizing the bound. The given method can be applied to TCM systems with arbitrary state numbers. Numerical results verify that all the codes designed by the proposed method achieve better BER performance than symmetric ones.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel multiple trellis coded orthogonal transmit scheme is proposed to exploit transmit diversity in fading channels. In this scheme, a unique vector from a set of orthogonal vectors is assigned to each transmit antenna. Each of the output symbols from the multiple trellis encoder is multiplied with one of these orthogonal vectors and transmitted from corresponding transmit antennas. By correlating with corresponding orthogonal vectors, the receiver separates symbols transmitted from different transmit antennas. This scheme can be adopted in coherent/differential systems with any number of transmit antennas. It is shown that the proposed scheme encompasses the conventional trellis coded unitary space-time modulation based on the optimal cyclic group codes as a special case. We also propose two better designs over the conventional trellis coded unitary space-time modulation. The first design uses 8 Phase Shift Keying (8-PSK) constellations instead of 16 Phase Shift Keying (16-PSK) constellations in the conventional trellis coded unitary space-time modulation. As a result, the product distance of this new design is much larger than that of the conventional trellis coded unitary space-time modulation. The second design introduces constellations with multiple levels of amplitudes into the design of the multiple trellis coded orthogonal transmit scheme. For both designs, simulations show that multiple trellis coded orthogonal transmit schemes can achieve better performance than the conventional trellis coded unitary space-time schemes.

Abstract:This paper considers trellis-coded differential unitary spacetime modulation for multiple-antenna systems when neither the transmitter nor the receiver has access to channel state information. The channel is assumed to be slowly time-varying flat Rayleigh fading with ideal interleaver. We derive the metric for maximum likelihood differential decoding and the Chernoff bound for pairwise error probability. We show that performance is dominated by the minimum Hamming distance which contributes linearly to the order of diversity. Code construction is described for rate m/(m + 1) trellis codes. Several code examples are provided based on diagonal cyclic group constellations for two transmit antennas with data rate 1 and 2 bits/s/Hz. Simulation results show that the proposed trellis-coded differential scheme can achieve high data rate communications by medium signal-to-noise ratio without channel estimation.

Abstract:In most cooperative communications works, perfect synchronization among relay nodes is assumed in order to achieve cooperative diversity. However, this assumption is not realistic due to the distributed nature of each relay node. In this paper, we propose a family of distributed space-time trellis code (DSTTC) that does not require the synchronization assumption. It is shown that the proposed DSTTC can achieve full cooperative and full multipath diversities for the asynchronous transmission by utilizing a specifically designed generator matrix. We derive sufficient conditions on the DSTTC with the minimum memory order. Finally, various numerical examples are provided to verify the analytical studies. The newly proposed codes exhibit good properties, e.g. high energy efficiency and low synchronization cost, and can be applied to distributed wireless networks.

Abstract:Trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is a power and bandwidth efficient digital transmission scheme which offers very low structural delay of the data stream. Classical TCM uses a signal constellation of twice the cardinality compared to an uncoded transmission with one bit of redundancy per PAM symbol, i.e., application of codes with rates $\frac{n-1}{n}$ when $2^{n}$ denotes the cardinality of the signal constellation. Recently published work allows rate adjustment for TCM by means of puncturing the convolutional code (CC) on which a TCM scheme is based on. In this paper it is shown how punctured TCM-signals transmitted over intersymbol interference (ISI) channels can favorably be decoded. Significant complexity reductions at only minor performance loss can be achieved by means of reduced state sequence estimation.

Trellis Coded Super Unitary Differential Space-Time Modulation

Abstract:We introduce a new trellis coded differential unitary space-time modulation scheme for multiple-antenna wireless systems. In the new scheme, the constellation expansion of unitary space-time signal set is executed using a super unitarity technique so that the number of available unitary matrices is increased but the transmitted symbol alphabet is kept the same. A novel set partitioning strategy is then applied to the expanded matrix set. This scheme avoids the rate-loss problem suffered by traditional code design method. Accordingly, it enables a transmission rate that is no lower than that of the underlying differential unitary space-time modulation. New codes using two transmit antennas are provided. Simulation results show that, besides having lower transmitter and receiver complexity, they also provide improvements in coding gain over existing codes.

Abstract:Trellis decoders are a general decoding technique first applied to qubit-based quantum error correction codes by Ollivier and Tillich in 2006. Here, we improve the scalability and practicality of their theory, show that it has strong structure, extend the results using classical coding theory as a guide, and demonstrate a canonical form from which the structural properties of the decoding graph may be computed. The resulting formalism is valid for any prime-dimensional quantum system. The modified decoder works for any stabilizer code and separates into two parts: 1) a one-time offline computation that builds a compact graphical representation of the normalizer of the code, and 2) a quick, parallel, online query of the resulting vertices using the Viterbi algorithm. We show the utility of trellis decoding by applying it to four high-density length-20 stabilizer codes for depolarizing noise and the well-studied Steane, rotated surface, and 4.8.8/6.6.6 color codes for only noise. Numerical simulations demonstrate a 20% improvement in the code-capacity threshold for color codes with boundaries by avoiding the mapping from color codes to surface codes. We identify trellis edge number as a key metric of difficulty of decoding, allowing us to quantify the advantage of single-axis ( or ) decoding for Calderbank–Steane–Shor codes and block decoding for concatenated codes.

Abstract:The design criteria for space-time codes under slow flat Rayleigh fading environments are well known to be the rank criterion and the determinant criterion. However, the derivation of these two criteria is based on the assumption that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is sufficiently high. Hence these criteria are loose when the SNR does not satisfy this assumption. In this letter, we consider this practical issue and derive tighter design criteria for moderate and low SNRs. Some new space-time trellis codes are found based on the new criteria through computer search. Simulation results show that these codes outperform existing codes under their designed SNR conditions.

Abstract:Trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is an attractive coded modulation technique which yields significant coding gain without bandwidth expansion. So far, researches concerning the optimization of TCM codes under Gaussian channels have concentrated on minimizing the error-event probability (EEP). The criterion is to maximize the free Euclidean distance of TCM coded sequences. However, for bitwise communication systems, minimizing the bit error rate (BER) is particularly important. This paper illustrates that the conventional TCM coding criterion is not sufficient in terms of minimizing BER. The reason is that the BER depends on not only Euclidean but also Hamming distances. We then propose a new criterion for TCM codes design, which considers both Euclidean and Hamming distances. Based on the proposed criterion, a general design method is given. A number of optimum TCM codes are designed by using this method. Simulation results verify that, compared with the conventional best-performed TCM codes, our codes not only yield the minimum EEP but also achieve better BER performance.

Abstract:In classic trellis-coded modulation (TCM) signal constellations of twice the cardinality are applied when compared to an uncoded transmission enabling transmission of one bit of redundancy per PAM-symbol, i.e., rates of $\frac{K}{K+1}$ when $2^{K+1}$ denotes the cardinality of the signal constellation. In order to support different rates, multi-dimensional (i.e., $\mathcal{D}$-dimensional) constellations had been proposed by means of combining subsequent one- or two-dimensional modulation steps, resulting in TCM-schemes with $\frac{1}{\mathcal{D}}$ bit redundancy per real dimension. In contrast, in this paper we propose to perform rate adjustment for TCM by means of puncturing the convolutional code (CC) on which a TCM-scheme is based on. It is shown, that due to the nontrivial mapping of the output symbols of the CC to signal points in the case of puncturing, a modification of the corresponding Viterbi-decoder algorithm and an optimization of the CC and the puncturing scheme are necessary.

Abstract:Tail-biting trellis representations of block codes are investigated. We develop some elementary theory, and present several intriguing examples, which we hope will stimulate further developments in this field. In particular, we construct a 16-state 12-section structurally invariant tail-biting trellis for the (24, 12, 8) binary Golay code. This tail-biting trellis representation is minimal: it simultaneously minimizes all conceivable measures of state complexity. Moreover, it compares favorably with the minimal conventional 12-section trellis for the Golay code, which has 256 states at its midpoint, or with the best quasi-cyclic representation of this code, which leads to a 64-state tail-biting trellis. Unwrapping this tail-biting trellis produces a periodically time-varying 16-state rate-1/2 "convolutional Golay code" with d=8, which has attractive performance/complexity properties. We furthermore show that the (6, 3, 4) quaternary hexacode has a minimal 8-state group tail-biting trellis, even though it has no such linear trellis over F/sub 4/. Minimal tail-biting trellises are also constructed for the (8, 4, 4) binary Hamming code, the (4, 2, 3) ternary tetracode, the (4, 2, 3) code over F/sub 4/, and the Z/sub 4/-linear (8. 4, 4) octacode.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asynchronous cooperative diversity schemes employing the amplify-and-forward (AF) protocols over the frequency-selective channel. We consider three time-division-multiple-access (TDMA) based cooperation protocols and derive the corresponding pairwise error probabilities (PEP). From our analysis, it is seen that of the paths from the source to relays and from relays to the destination, those with smaller diversity order result in the bottleneck for the overall system performance. We propose a new type of the distributed space-time trellis code (DSTTC) that can achieve full diversity for the asynchronous transmission by utilizing a specifically designed generator matrix. The optimal DSTTCs with the minimum memory order are found by the exhaustive computer search. Finally, various numerical examples are provided to corroborate the analytical studies.
Multirate Trellis Coded Modulation in Multimedia Communications

Abstract:Multirate multimedia information with different quality of service may be required at the same time in future communication systems. We propose a new class of trellis coded modulation (TCM) schemes, which can carry two different rates of multimedia information only using the same signal constellation. The transmitted information bit number per symbol in the proposed TCM is not an integer and greater than that of the conventional TCM. An interesting character of the proposed multirate TCM is that it can provide different error protection for the two information rates. We also present design criteria and existence of noncatastrophic multirate TCM. Simulation results show that it can provide a certain coding gain compared with the corresponding uncoded modulation schemes

Abstract:This paper applies probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) to cyclic redundancy check (CRC)-aided tail-biting trellis-coded modulation (TCM). CRC-TCM-PAS produces practical codes for short block lengths on the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. In the transmitter, equally likely message bits are encoded by a distribution matcher (DM) generating amplitude symbols with a desired distribution. A CRC is appended to the sequence of amplitude symbols, and this sequence is then encoded and modulated by TCM to produce real-valued channel input signals. This paper proves that the sign values produced by the TCM are asymptotically equally likely to be positive or negative. The CRC-TCM-PAS scheme can thus generate channel input symbols with a symmetric capacity-approaching probability mass function. The paper provides an analytical upper bound on the frame error rate of the CRC-TCM-PAS system over the AWGN channel. This FER upper bound is the objective function used for jointly optimizing the CRC and convolutional code. Additionally, this paper proposes a multi-composition DM, which is a collection of multiple constant-composition DMs. The optimized CRC-TCM-PAS systems achieve frame error rates below the random coding union (RCU) bound in AWGN and outperform the short-blocklength PAS systems with various other forward error correction codes studied in Coşkun et al. (2019).

Abstract:The potential promised by multiple transmit antennas has raised considerable interest in space-time coding for wireless communications. In this paper, we propose a systematic approach for designing space-time trellis codes over flat fading channels with full antenna diversity and good coding advantage. It is suitable for an arbitrary number of transmit antennas with arbitrary signal constellations. The key to this approach is to separate the traditional space-time trellis code design into two parts. It first encodes the information symbols using a one-dimensional (M,1) nonbinary block code, with M being the number of transmit antennas, and then transmits the coded symbols diagonally across the space-time grid. We show that regardless of channel time-selectivity, this new class of space-time codes always achieves a transmit diversity of order M with a minimum number of trellis states and a coding advantage equal to the minimum product distance of the employed block code. Traditional delay diversity codes can be viewed as a special case of this coding scheme in which the repetition block code is employed. To maximize the coding advantage, we introduce an optimal construction of the nonbinary block code for a given modulation scheme. In particular, an efficient suboptimal solution for multilevel phase-shift-keying (PSK) modulation is proposed. Some code examples with 2-6 bits/s/Hz and two to six transmit antennas are provided, and they demonstrate excellent performance via computer simulations. Although it is proposed for flat fading channels, this coding scheme can be easily extended to frequency-selective fading channels.

Abstract:This paper presents joint source channel variable length (VL) coding/decoding based on a space trellis. Through constructing a joint decoding plane trellis, better decoding performance can be achieved than by using the bit-level decoding algorithm. However, the plane trellis is complicated, which results in high decoding complexity for decoding VL turbo codes. To solve this problem, we construct a space trellis and design a low-complexity joint decoding algorithm with a variable length symbol-a posteriori probability (VLS-APP) algorithm in resource constrained deep space communication networks. Simulation results show that the proposed approach reduces the decoding complexity by 10% compared with the plane trellis, and the gain of E b / N 0 is about 0.2 dB at SER = 10 −4 . Furthermore, it provides substantial error protection for variable-length encoded image data.
