Abstract:Three new species of Meliola collected in China, Meliola daphniphyllicola parasitic on Daphniphyllum paxianum (Daphniphyllaceae), Meliola eriolaenicola on Eriolaena sp.(Sterculiaceae) and Meliola stixis on Stixis suaveolens (Capparidaceae) are reported. Latin, English diagnoses and illustrations of the new species are presented. Type specimens examined are deposited in the Herbarium of Guangdong Institute of Microbiology (HMIGD), Guangzhou and in the Herbarium Mycologicum Academiae Sinicae (HMAS), Beijing.

Abstract:Introduction: Species of Melanconiella include a diverse array of plant pathogens as well as endophytic fungi. Members of this genus have been frequently collected from the family Betulaceae (birches) in Europe and North America. Little, however, if known concerning the distribution of Melanconiella and/or their potential as pathogens of other plant hosts. Methods: Fungi were noted and isolated from diseased leaves of Loropetalum chinense (Chinese fringe flower) and Camellia sinensis (tea) in Fujian Province, China. Genomic DNA was extracted from fungal isolates and the nucleotide sequences of four loci were determined and sued to construct phylogenetic trees. Morphological characteristics of fungal structures were determined via microscopic analyses. Results: Four strains and two new species of Melanconiella were isolated from infected leaves of L. chinense and C. sinensis in Fujian Province, China. Based on morphology and a multi-gene phylogeny of the internal transcribed spacer regions with the intervening 5.8S nrRNA gene (ITS), the 28S large subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA (LSU), the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2), and the translation elongation factor 1-α gene (TEF1-α), Melanconiellaloropetali sp. nov. and Melanconiellacamelliae sp. nov. were identified and described herein. Detailed descriptions, illustrations, and a key to the known species of Melanconiella are provided. Discussion: These data identify new species of Melanconiella, expanding the potential range and distribution of these dark septate fungi. The developed keys provide a reference source for further characterization of these fungi.
Ecological and Floristic Analyses of Meliolales (fungi) in China

Abstract:Species diversity, ecological distribution, hosts and floristic elements of Meliolales in China were studied. 341 species and varieties (comprising 15% of the world species), belonging to 7 genera were reported. Among them, dominant genera are Melioln (239 species and varieties), Asteridella (54) and Appendicidella (22). Species of Meliolales in China are distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical areas, and 76.8% of the host plants are of tropical elements. Geographical elements of Meliolales species in China can be included in 11 areal types, viz. cosmopolitan elements(0.3%), pantropical (7.3%), tropical Asia and tropical America (9.1%), Old World tropical (0.3%), tropical Asia to tropical Australasia (2.1%), tropical Asia to tropical Africa (16.1%), tropical Asia (34.0%), north temperate (0.6%), East Asia and North America (0.3%), East Asia (1.7%), Endemic to China (28.2%). Thus, tropical elements of mycoflora in China comprise 68.9% of the total, and edemic to China species amount to 28.2%. The distribution of genera of Meliolales in China, and the numbers of species orvarieties parasitized on what host plant families is tabulated.

Abstract:Species of Cantharellus subgenus Cantharellus are interesting and important for their mycorrhizal properties, medicinal values, and edibility. In China, there are many undescribed species of the subgenus. In this study, four new species of subg. Cantharellus , viz. Cantharellus albopileatus , Cantharellus chuiweifanii , Cantharellus pinetorus , and Cantharellus ravus from Hainan and Hunan Provinces, respectively, were described based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence as a contribution to the knowledge of the species diversity in China. Detailed descriptions, color photographs of fresh basidiomata, and line drawings of microstructures of these four new species are presented as well as comparisons with related species.

Abstract:Hymenopellis is the genus that exhibits the highest number of species within the Xerula/Oudemansiella complex. Numerous species of Hymenopellis demonstrate edibility, and some of these species have been domesticated and cultivated. During an extensive survey carried out in Henan and Jilin Provinces, China, a substantial quantity of Hymenopellis specimens was gathered as a component of the macrofungal resource inventory. Based on the findings of morphological and molecular phylogenetic studies, a new species, Hymenopellis biyangensis, has been identified. A new record species, Hymenopellis altissima, has been discovered in China. Additionally, two new record species, Hymenopellis raphanipes and Xerula strigosa, have been found in Henan Province. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit ribosomal (nrLSU) were used to establish a phylogeny for species identification. Detailed descriptions, field habitat maps and line drawings of these species are presented. The discussion focuses on the relationships between newly discovered species and other related taxa. Additionally, this study provides and a key to the documented species of Hymenopellis and Xerula found in China.

Abstract:Within the genus Mycena, species exhibiting brownish basidiomata present considerable challenges in identification due to similar coloration. This study underscores the significance of pileipellis types and cheilocystidia characteristics as critical in delimiting brownish Mycena species. To clarify the principal taxonomic characters and their utility in distinguishing between brownish Mycena species, a morphological taxonomy and phylogenetic analysis were performed. Five new species from China were introduced and characterized through a comprehensive morphological anatomy and phylogenetic substantiation: M. campanulatihemisphaerica sp. nov., M. digitifurcata sp. nov., M. kunyuensis sp. nov., M. limitis sp. nov., and M. oryzifluens sp. nov. Discussions of these taxa are supplemented with morphological illustrations. The phylogenetic relationships were inferred using Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood methods based on sequences from the internal transcribed spacer and the large subunit regions of nuclear ribosomal RNA. With the addition of these five new species, the worldwide count of brownish Mycena increases to 94, and a key to the 29 known species of brownish Mycena from China is presented.

Abstract:Pleurotremataceae species are saprobes on decaying wood in terrestrial, mangrove, and freshwater habitats. The generic boundary of the family has traditionally been based on morphology. All genera of Pleurotremataceae have a high degree of morphological overlap, of which the generic circumscription of Melomastia and Dyfrolomyces has not been well resolved. Thus, the delimitation of genera has always been challenging. Melomastia traditionally differs from Dyfrolomyces in having 2-septate, oblong, with obtuse-ends ascospores. These main characteristics have been used to distinguish Melomastia from Dyfrolomyces for a long time. However, the above characteristics sometimes overlap among Dyfrolomyces and Melomastia species. Based on the morphology and multigene phylogeny with newly obtained data, we synonymized Dyfrolomyces under Melomastia following up-to-date results. Four novel species (i.e., Melomastia fusispora, M. oleae, M. sichuanensis and M. winteri) collected from the dead branches of Olea europaea L. in Chengdu Olive Base, Sichuan Province in China are introduced based on detailed morphological characterization and phylogenetic analyses of sequences based on nuclear ribosomal (LSU and SSU) and protein-coding gene (tef1-α). The 11 new combinations proposed are Melomastia aquatica (=Dyfrolomyces aquaticus), M. chromolaenae (=D. chromolaenae), M. distoseptata (=D. distoseptatus), M. mangrovei (=D. mangrovei), M. marinospora (=D. marinosporus), M. neothailandica (=D. neothailandicus), M. phetchaburiensis (=D. phetchaburiensis), M. sinensis (=D. sinensis), M. thailandica (=D. thailandica), M. thamplaensis (=D. thamplaensis) and M. tiomanensis (=D. tiomanensis).

Abstract:During the survey on freshwater hyphomycetes in Guangxi, Guizhou and Hainan Provinces, China, five fresh collections were encountered. Based on their morphology, these five isolates were identified as belonging to Hermatomyces , Kirschsteiniothelia , Paramonodictys , Pleopunctum and Sparticola . Multi-gene phylogenetic analyses were performed for each genus, which resulted in the identification of five new species, namely Hermatomyces hainanensis , Kirschsteiniothelia ramus , Paramonodictys globosa , Pleopunctum guizhouense , and Sparticola irregularis . Detailed descriptions and illustrations of the morphological characteristics of these new taxa were provided. This research enriches the biodiversity of freshwater dematiaceous hyphomycetes.

Abstract:In a study of fungi isolated from plant material in Guizhou Province, China, we identified 23 strains of Diaporthales belonging to nine species. These are identified from multigene phylogenetic analyses of ITS, LSU, rpb2, tef1, and tub2 gene sequence data coupled with morphological studies. The fungi include a new genus (Pseudomastigosporella) in Foliocryphiaceae isolated from Acer palmatum and Hypericum patulum, a new species of Chrysofolia isolated from Coriaria nepalensis, and five new species of Diaporthe isolated from Juglans regia, Eucommia ulmoides, and Hypericum patulum. Gnomoniopsis rosae and Coniella quercicola are newly recorded species for China.

Abstract:The genus Laccaria is a type of cosmopolitan and ecologically important fungal group. Members can form ectomycorrhizal associations with numerous trees, and some species are common edible fungi in local markets. Although some new species from China are recently published, the species diversity of Laccaria is still unclear in China. In this study, some samples of Laccaria were collected from southern China, and morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses based on the multilocus dataset of ITS-LSU-tef1-rpb2 confirmed five new species. Laccaria miniata, L. nanlingensis and L. neovinaceoavellanea were collected from subtropical broad-leaved forests, and L. rufobrunnea and L. umbilicata were collected from subtropical mixed forests of southwest China. Full descriptions, illustrations, comparisons with similar species and phylogenetic analysis are provided.

Abstract:During the re-examination of the Chinese Marasmius specimens of sect. Sicci preserved in the herbaria KUN and GDGM, four new species were discovered: Marasmius albostipitatus is characterized by an orange pileus, a white stipe, and the absence of pleurocystidia and caulocystidia; M. hygrocybiformis is recognized by an orange-red, plano-convex pileus, a grayish green hyaline stipe and medium large basidiospores; M. sparsifolius is characterized by an orange-white pileus, extremely distant lamellae not reaching the pileus margin; M. subabundans is similar to M. abundans in many respects, but has obviously smaller basidiospores and usually a paler pileus. In addition, M. coklatus, M. confertus var. parvisporus, M. hinnuleus and M. cf. occultatiformis are reported as new to China. All eight taxa are described and illustrated in detail according to the Chinese materials.

Abstract:Helicosporous hyphomycetes have the potential to produce a variety of bioactive compounds. However, the strain resources of this fungal group are relatively scarce, which limits their further exploitation and utilization. In this study, based on phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, RPB2, and TEF1α sequence data and the morphology from 11 isolates, we introduce four new species of helicosporous hyphomycetes, viz. Helicoma wuzhishanense, Helicosporium hainanense, H. viridisporum , and Neohelicomyces hainanensis , as well as three new records, viz. Helicoma guttulatum, H. longisporum , and Helicosporium sexuale . Detailed morphological comparisons of the four new species that distinguish them are provided.

Abstract:Smithiomyces is reported for the first time from tropical regions in China, thus expanding its known native geographic range from the Neotropics to tropical Asia. Phylogenetic evidence from four nuclear loci supports the monophyly of Smithiomyces and a close evolutionary relationship with the nonmonophyletic genera Melanophyllum and Cystolepiota in the Agaricaceae. Detailed morphological descriptions are provided for three newly described species from China: S. asiaticus, S. heterosporus, and S. lepiotoides. Illustrations of fresh basidiomata in the field, line drawings of key anatomical features, microscopic images of anatomical features, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of basidiospores, and a key to known species of Smithiomyces are also provided.
