Abstract:Crepidotus subg. Dochmiopus contributes to more than half of Crepidotus species and exhibits highly hidden diversity. However, C. subg. Dochmiopus is challenging to study because the basidiomata of C. subg. Dochmiopus species are usually small and white, inconspicuous interspecific distinctions, and possess a familiar complex. In this study, we utilized a variety of characteristics for species identification, including habitat, presence or absence of a stipe in mature specimens, pileipellis and cheilocystidia patterns, whether the lamellae edges are fimbriated, and other characteristics. Above all, cheilocystidia and pileipellis patterns will be important in C. subg. Dochmiopus research. Based on the present specimens, we constructed a multigene phylogenetic tree (ITS + LSU) and recognized four new species: C. lamellomaculatus sp. nov., C. capitatocystidiatus sp. nov., C. succineus sp. nov., C. clavocystidiatustustus sp. nov. Detailed morphological descriptions, photographs, line drawings and comparisons with closely related taxa for the new species are provided. The current phylogenetic analysis does not support the previously classifications, indicating that the classification of Crepidotus requires re-evaluation. But the existing molecular datasets and species' descriptions are insufficient to fully resolve the classification. Further integration of new gene segments and a comprehensive review of morphological characteristics will reveal a natural classification for Crepidotus.
Mycena yuezhuoi sp. nov. (Mycenaceae, Agaricales), a purple species from the peninsula areas of China

Abstract:During a study of Mycena s.l. in eastern China, a distinct species, Mycena yuezhuoi, was collected on the Jiaodong Peninsula. Mycena yuezhuoi has the following characteristics: a purple pileus, emarginate and white lamellae, elongated pip-shaped to cylindrical basidiospores, and cheilocystidia that are smooth or occasionally have an apical protrusion. The discovery of M. yuezhuoi provides new material for the study of Mycena sect. Calodontes, especially the M. pura complex. Although M. yuezhuoi closely resembles M. pura regarding macroscopic characteristics, it forms a monophyletic clade in phylogenetic trees that is distinct from clades in the M. pura complex. Moreover, the molecular phylogeny obtained from a combined analysis of multiple gene regions (ITS+RPB1+tEF1) supports the results of the morphological identification. We propose Mycena yuezhuoi as a new species based on morphological observations and phylogenetic analyses and provide line drawings, photos, descriptions, and comparisons with allied species.

Abstract:The species diversity of early-diverging fungi has long lagged behind that of higher fungi, posing a significant obstacle to our comprehensive understanding of the fungal kingdom. Our ongoing research endeavors aim to address this gap by exploring the species diversity of early-diverging fungi in China. In this study, we describe three novel species within the Backusella , namely B. elliptica sp. nov. , B. fujianensis sp. nov. , and B. variispora sp. nov. , based on phylogenetic and morphological analyses. In the phylogenetic analysis of the ITS (internal transcribed spacer), LSU (large subunit of ribosomal RNA gene), and RPB1 (RNA polymerase II largest subunit gene) regions, the B. elliptica and B. fujianensis cluster closely with B. gigacellularis , B. ovalispora , and B. solicola , and the B. variispora is closely related to B. locustae and B. pernambucensis . Morphologically, B. elliptica is distinguished by elliptical sporangiospores, as well as cylindrical and hemispherical columellae. The B. fujianensis is characterized by elliptical sporangiospores, and various types of columellae such as hemispherical, subglobose, depressed globose and conical. The B. variispora is characterized by subglobose to globose sporangiospores, as well as hemispherical, subglobose to globose columellae. Additionally, the sporangiophores are long and monopodially branched in B. elliptica and B. fujianensis , while short and simple or sympodially branched in B. variispora . Physiologically, the maximum growth temperatures of B. elliptica (32 °C), B. fujianensis (35 °C), and B. variispora were (35 °C) were determined. With the inclusion of these newly described taxa, the total number of Backusella species known from China now stands at 12. Finally, we provide a key to facilitate the morphological identification of Backusella species from Asia.

Abstract:The taxonomy regarding three closely related genera of Agaricaceae, viz. Heinemannomyces, Hymenagaricus and Xanthagaricus, is updated based on morphological and four-locus molecular phylogenetic evidence from collections gathered in South China. Thirteen species identified from 122 collections are described, including Heinemannomyces splendidissimus, eight new species of Xanthagaricus, viz. X. boluoshanensis, X. chamaeleontinus, X. guangzhouensis, X. heinemannii, X. minimus, X. phylononcaeruleus, X. retisporus and X. scauinus, and four known species of Xanthagaricus, viz. X. erinaceus, X. ianthinus, X. necopinatus and X. purpureosquamulosus. Among them, He. splendidissimus is phylogenetically recognized as a Hymenagaricus species, namely Hy. splendidissimus, and Xanthagaricus heinemannii is morphologically similar to Hy. splendidissimus in floccose squamules on the pileus and stipe. Both species have pileus squamules composed of inflated cells in the lower layer and hyphae forming an irregular trichoderm in the upper layer. However, X. heinemannii differs from Hy. splendidissimus by the context not turning reddish after damaged, brownish lamellae, and usually without hymeniform elements in pileus squamules. These findings suggest that species of both Hymenagaricus and Xanthagaricus may present hyphae forming an irregular trichoderm in pileus squamules. Xanthagaricus erinaceus is rediscovered after 40 years, together with X. necopinatus and X. purpureosquamulosus are three newly recorded species in China.

Abstract:The first occurrence of Marasmiellomycena and Pulverulina in the Chinese mycobiota are reported, M. tomentosa and P. flavoalba , two new species and M. albodescendens , a new combination, revealed by phylogenetic analyses and morphological study. These newly-recorded genera, Marasmiellomycena , which can be distinguished by their agaricoid basidiomata, dark-coloured stipe, sarcodimitic tramal structure, stipitipellis with yellow to yellowish-brown pigments and yellow-pigmented thick-walled caulocystidia and Pulverulina , which differs from other genera of Porotheleaceae by its pruinose stipe, decurrent lamellae, inamyloid basidiospores and absence of hymenial cystidia. We also formally describe three other new species of Porotheleaceae collected from Chinese temperate to subtropical zones of Fujian and Zhejiang Provinces: Clitocybula fuscostriata , Gerronema brunneosquamulosum and Leucoinocybe subglobispora . Furthermore, we include the results of a phylogenetic analysis of Porotheleaceae , based on a multi-locus ( ITS , nrLSU and rpb2 ) dataset. According to this analysis, Chrysomycena , Clitocybula , Delicatula , Hydropodia , Hydropus , Leucoinocybe , Marasmiellomycena , Megacollybia , Pulverulina , Trogia and Vizzinia are monophyletic. However, Gerronema is identified as polyphyletic and, additionally, Porotheleum does not form a monophyletic group either because Porotheleum parvulum and Porotheleum albidum are "unassigned" in phylogenetic analysis. The results of our phylogenetic analyses, coupled with morphological observations, confirm recognition of these new taxa. Morphological descriptions, photographs, line drawings and comparisons with closely-related taxa are presented for the new species. A key to the 22 species belonging to nine genera of Porotheleaceae in China is also provided.

Abstract:The basidiomycete genus Botryobasidium is a resupinate saprotrophic with a global distribution range from coniferous to broad-leaved forest ecosystems. Though numerous species have been reported from Eurasia and North America, few have been described from China. In the current work, phylogenetic analyses of Botryobasidium in China were conducted based on the dataset of the internal transcribed spacer ( ITS ) regions and the large subunit ( LSU ) of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses were used to reconstruct the phylogenetic tree, and three new species, namely Botryobasidium acanthosporum , B. leptocystidiatum and B. subovalibasidium , were described from subtropical forests of Yunnan Province, Southwestern China. Botryobasidium acanthosporum is characterized by having yellowish white to dark yellow basidiome, clavate to tubular cystidia, and subglobose to globose basidiospores with obtuse spines. Botryobasidium leptocystidiatum is characterized by having fluffy to arachnoid, greyish white to ivory basidiome, generative hyphae with clamped, tubular cystidia, and subnavicular to navicular basidiospores. While, B. subovalibasidium is characterized by having yellowish to ivory basidiome, subovoid basidia, navicular to suburniform basidiospores, and thick-walled chlamydospores. These three new species are described and illustrated, and the discriminating characters between the new species and their closely related species are discussed. A key to known species of Botryobasidium in China is provided.

Abstract:Fungi are one of the most diverse groups of organisms on Earth, among which wood-inhabiting fungi play a crucial role in ecosystem processes and functions. Three wood-inhabiting fungi belonging to the genera Ceraceomyces, Stereopsis, and Xenasmatella were found in Southern China. Combined with morphological characteristics and molecular biological evidence, the present study describes them to be new fungal taxa Ceraceomyces yunnanens, Stereopsis yunnanens, and Xenasmatella bambusicola. Ceraceomyces yunnanens is distinguished by the resupinate basidiomata with merulioid hymenial surface, monomitic hyphal system and cylindrical basidiospores; S. yunnanensis is characterized by the laterally stipitate basidiocarps with greyish brown to brown pilei, monomitic hyphal system and subglobose basidiospores; and X. bambusicola is characterized by the resupinate basidiomata, arachnoid hymenophore with white to greyish hymenial surface and warted basidiospores. Sequences of ITS and nLSU rRNA markers of the studied samples were generated, and phylogenetic analyses were performed with maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and Bayesian inference methods. The phylogenetic analyses of ITS+nLSU showed that three new species nested into families Amylocorticiaceae, Stereopsidaceae and Xenasmataceae (Agaricomycetes), in which C. yunnanens grouped sister to C. borealis; S. yunnanensis grouped with S. radicans; and X. bambusicola grouped sister to X. xinpingensis.

Abstract:Cryptothecia and Myriostigma are important elements of crustose lichen communities in tropical to subtropical forests, but little research has been done on these two genera in China. Morphological and molecular phylogenetic approaches to investigate species diversity of Cryptothecia and Myriostigma from Southern China were carried out in this study. We find five species of Cryptothecia and Myriostigma in our study, including three new species (M. flavescens, M. hainana and M. laxipunctata) and two new records (C. bartlettii and C. inexspectata). In addition, a phylogenetic tree based on mtSSU, RPB2 and nLSU illustrates the placement of the five species and supports the delimitation of the three new taxa. Detailed descriptions of morphological, ecological and chemical characteristics and illustrations are provided for every species. A key to all known Chinese Cryptothecia and Myriostigma species is also provided.

Abstract:Two taxonomically controversial polypore genera with reddish brown to orange basidiomata that stain reddish with KOH solution, Aurantiporus and Hapalopilus, are revised based on additional sampling, morphological examination, and phylogenetic analysis of a combined dataset of ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-nLSU sequences. Hapalopilus is a monophyletic genus belonging to Phanerochaetaceae, whereas Aurantiporus is a polyphyletic genus belonging to Meruliaceae. Hapalopilus and Aurantiporus s. str. are circumscribed, and two new species - Aurantiporusorientalis and Hapalopilustabuliformis - are described and illustrated from temperate China. In addition, four new combinations, viz. Aurantiporusalboaurantius, A.mutans, A.tropicus and Luteoporiaalbocitrina, are proposed based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis. The relationships between Aurantiporus and Hapalopilus are discussed.

Abstract:Introduction: The genus Laccaria has been reported from temperate and tropical areas and is an important constituent in forest ecosystems. However, the species diversity of Laccaria in Southwest China (Yunnan) has been underestimated. Methods: In this paper, descriptions based on morphological and multi-gene sequence data from internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (nrLSU), translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1α) and the polymerase II second largest subunit (RPB2) of three new Laccaria species from Southwest China (Yunnan) are reported. Results: Two of these were characterized by orange pileus and globose to subglobose basidiospores: L. cinnabarina and L. spinulosa. While L. cinnabarina has orange red colored basidiocarps with conspicuously pellucid-striate pattern, and a fibrillose stipe with longitudinally striations, L. spinulosa has a brownish orange to brown fruiting body with light white pruinae and 2-spored basidia. Laccaria longistriata is characterized by brown to flesh-colored basidioma, prominently striate to sulcate pileus and globose to subglobose basidiospores. Discussion: The three new species were described, illustrated and compared with closely related species in morphology and phylogeny.

Abstract:The aim of this tutorial is to encourage members of the neuroprosthesis community to incorporate electron transfer processes into their thinking and provide them with the tools to do so when they design and work with neurostimulating devices. The focus of this article is on platinum because it is the most used electrode metal for devices in commercial use. The i(Ve) profile or cyclic voltammogram contains information about electron transfer processes that can occur when the electrode-electrolyte interface, Ve, is at a specific potential, and assumed to be near steady-state conditions. For the engineer/designer this means that if the potential is not in the range of a specific electron transfer process, that process cannot occur. An i(Ve) profile, recorded at sweep rates greater than 0.1 mVs−1, approximates steady-state conditions. Rapid transient potential excursions, like that seen with neural stimulation pulses, may be too fast for the reaction to occur, however, this means that if the potential is in the range of a specific electron transfer process it may occur and should be considered. The approach described here can be used to describe the thermodynamic electron transfer processes on other candidate electrode metals, e.g. stainless steel, iridium, carbon-based, etc.
A novel Mallocybe species (Inocybaceae, Agaricales) discovered in the Longquan Mountain of Southwestern China

Abstract:Within the genus Mallocybe, new species have been continuously discovered on a global scale, yet only few species have been reported from China. During surveys of macro-fungi diversity and taxonomy in Sichuan Province, China, two samples were collected in the forests dominated by Quercus glauca and identified as a new member of this genus, namely Mallocybe longquanensis. Morphologically, M. longquanensis is distinguished by its small-sized basidioma, light brown to yellowish-brown pileus covered with tomentose-fibrillose, ellipsoidal or ovoid basidiospores, as well as the utriform, clavate to cylindrical cheilocystidia. Multi-gene phylogenetic analysis of ITS, LSU, and rpb2 also revealed that the new taxon forms a distinct lineage within the genus Mallocybe. The detailed morphological features, color photographs, and comparisons with morphological similar taxa are provided.

Abstract:Species of Cantharellus subgenus Cantharellus are interesting and important for their mycorrhizal properties, medicinal values, and edibility. In China, there are many undescribed species of the subgenus. In this study, four new species of subg. Cantharellus , viz. Cantharellus albopileatus , Cantharellus chuiweifanii , Cantharellus pinetorus , and Cantharellus ravus from Hainan and Hunan Provinces, respectively, were described based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence as a contribution to the knowledge of the species diversity in China. Detailed descriptions, color photographs of fresh basidiomata, and line drawings of microstructures of these four new species are presented as well as comparisons with related species.

Abstract:Mycena subpiligera , a new taxon in sect. Fragilipedes that can strongly enhance the germination efficiency of Gastrodia elata seeds, was discovered in subtropical areas of China. As revealed by a morphological comparison with related Mycena species as well as maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the large subunit (LSU) regions of nuclear ribosomal RNA, the new taxon can be distinguished from phenotypically similar and phylogenetically related species. Optimal cultural conditions for M . subpiligera basidiomata are reported, and the germination rate of the new species is compared with that of M . citrinomarginata .

Abstract:China has a complex and diverse forest ecological environment, which breeds abundant forest macrofungi, including some edible, medicinal, and poisonous species. During the investigations of macrofungi in the Saihanba National Nature Reserve, North China, we collected abundant specimens of Agaricales and Polyporales within the Agaricomycetes. Based on the morphological characters and molecular evidence of DNA sequences including the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, the large subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nLSU), the small subunit of mitochondrial rRNA gene (mtSSU), the small subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nuSSU), the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB1), the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II gene (RPB2), the beta-tubulin gene (TUB), and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha gene (TEF1), this study identifies ten species of Agaricales and Polyporales new to science, viz. Cyanosporus subpopuli, Gelatinofungus betulina, Lycoperdon pseudoperlatum, Macrocystidia hebeiensis, Mycena subbrunnea, M. subpura, M. variispora, M. violocea-ardesiaca, Picipes griseus, and Pleuroflammula hebeiensis. Detailed morphological descriptions, fruiting bodies, and microscopic structure diagrams of these ten novel species are provided.
New species, new records, and common species of Diderma (Physarales, Didymiaceae) from China

Abstract:Myxomycetes are fungus-like organisms that play a significant role in ecological processes, however, their taxonomic diversity and distribution in China are poorly understood. Diderma is an important genus within the Class Myxogastria that has received little attention in China. This study provides new insights into the geographic range of Diderma species in China and identifies previously unreported and newly recorded species. Our results reveal that the geographic distribution of Diderma species in China is more diverse than previously thought, with four previously unreported species found in Liaoning, Hubei, Sichuan, and Gansu provinces. In addition, we describe five new Diderma species that are distinct from previously known species, namely Diderma annuliferum, Diderma gansuense, Diderma roseum, Diderma jilinense, and Diderma flexocapillitium. We identified these species using a combination of morphological characterization, DNA sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. Our findings have important implications for understanding Myxomycete biodiversity in China and can inform future research on the ecology, biogeography, and evolution of these fascinating organisms. Specifically, our study highlights the need for continued exploration of underrepresented areas to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the diversity and distribution of Myxomycetes in China. Importance: The discovery of five new Diderma species and the revelation of their diverse distribution expand our understanding of Myxomycete diversity and provide a foundation for future studies on the ecology and biogeography of these organisms. These findings contribute to our knowledge of microbial diversity and have practical implications for conserving underrepresented areas and maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Unveiling fungi associated with Castanopsis woody litter in Yunnan Province, China: Insights into Pleosporales (Dothideomycetes) species

Abstract:During a survey of the diversity of lignicolous fungi in Yunnan Province, China, we collected and identified five microfungi species from dead woody litters of Castanopsis trees in terrestrial habitats. Through both morphological comparisons and phylogenetic analyses of multi-gene sequences, we identified two taxa as new species and three collections as new host records within Pleosporales . Pseudolophiostoma lincangense sp. nov. is introduced as a sexual morph in Lophiostomataceae , Pleopunctum baoshanense sp. nov. is introduced as a hyphomycetous fungi in Phaeoseptaceae , and Paraphoma aquatica as a first report of sexual morph in Paraphoma . In addition, Occultibambusa kunmingensis and Pleopunctum megalosporum were isolated for the first time from the dead twigs of Castanopsis delavayi and C. calathiformis , respectively. Comprehensive morphological descriptions, illustrations, and phylogenetic analysis results are provided for the above-mentioned species.

Abstract:Micropsalliota is a relatively small genus containing only 62 previously identified species. Here, we describe six new taxa of Micropsalliota based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses: M. minor, M. ovalispora, M. pseudodelicatula, M. rufosquarrosa, M. tenuipes , and M. wuyishanensis and a new record taxon to China. The first Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of a three-gene dataset (ITS, LSU, and rpb2 ) separated the genus into 18 weakly to strongly supported major clades and subclades, but only a few subclades were synapomorphies. According to phylogenetic analyses, M. cornuta does not belong in Micropsalliota . A key to 20 species of Micropsalliota in China is provided.

Abstract:Three new wood-inhabiting fungal species, Cerioporus yunnanensis, Perenniporiopsis sinensis, and Sarcoporia yunnanensis, are proposed based on a combination of the morphological features and molecular evidence. Cerioporus yunnanensis is characterized by the pileate basidiomata having a fawn brown to black pileal surface, a dimitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, and the presence of the fusoid cystidioles and cylindrical basidiospores (9–12.5 × 3.5–5 μm). Perenniporiopsis sinensis is distinct from the osseous pileus with verrucose, an orange-yellow to dark reddish-brown pileal surface with a cream margin, a trimitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, and the presence of the fusiform cystidioles and ellipsoid basidiospores (9–11 × 5.5–6.5 μm). Sarcoporia yunnanensis is typical of the pileate basidiomata with a salmon to reddish-brown pileal surface, a monomitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, and the presence of the ellipsoid basidiospores (4–5.5 × 2.5–4 μm). Sequences of ITS + nLSU + mt-SSU + TEF1 + RPB1 + RPB2 genes were used for the phylogenetic analyses using maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and Bayesian inference methods. The multiple genes with six loci analysis showed that the three new species nested within the order Polyporales, in which C. yunnanensis and P. sinensis nested into the family Polyporaceae, and S. yunnanensis grouped into the family Sarcoporiaceae.
