Abstract:Electron field emission characteristics of individual multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were investigated in situ inside the transmission electron microscope (TEM). For a single MWCNT it was found that while field-emission can hardly occur from the side of the nanotube, a curved nanotube may result in finite side emission and the best emission geometry is the top emission geometry. Current–voltage (I–V) measurements made at different vacuum conditions and voltage sweeps emphasize the importance of the adsorbates on the electron field emission of MWCNTs. For a contaminated MWCNT, although the field emission current was reduced, the stability of its emission was improved. A current of up to several tens of μA was observed for a single MWCNT, but it was found that long time emission usually results in drastic structure damage that may lead to sudden emission failure.

Abstract:The failure of individual multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during electron field emission was investigated in situ inside the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Long time emission of a single CNT at the level of tens µA or higher may lead to unrecoverable damage to the CNT. High-resolution TEM observations of the emission failure process shown that the failure was usually companied by structure damage or break of the CNT, and the failure or degradation of the emission characteristics of the CNT was typically initiated at the CNT/substrate contact, defect site or at the open end via the field evaporation or oxidation of the tip of the CNT.

Abstract:High resolution field emission image of a single multi-walled carbon nanotube was studied by field emission microscopy. The images contain patterns consisting of rather ordered bright fringes. We propose a model based on coherent electron scattering to explain the observed field emission image. The emitted electrons will undergo coherent scattering within the cap region of a multi-wall carbon nanotube, which may be viewed as elastic scattering by a polycrystalline structure with an infinite size. This study is helpful for understanding the physical mechanism of field emission of carbon nanotube.

Abstract:Interference fringes are obtained in a field-emission microscopy (FEM) study of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) with two open-ended branches. The FEM pattern, which is composed of three parallel streaks, can be interpreted by using classical Young's double-slit interference with the ends of the two MWCNT branches treated as two secondary sources of the electron wave. The origin of the coherency of the electron beams from the two branches is discussed on the basis of the quantitative analysis of the FEM pattern. The result suggests a new approach to obtaining a coherent electron source.

Abstract:The electron emission and structural properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were investigated by using field emission microscopy (FEM). The transmission electron microscopy micrograph confirmed the existence of an SWCNT bundle on the W tip. Under appropriate experimental conditions, an FEM image with an elliptic ring-like structure composed of separated bright dots was obtained, a reasonable interpretation of it is that it was produced from the open end for a zigzag (16,0) SWCNT protruding from the SWCNT bundle, each bright dot corresponding to a single atom at the open end. And, if true, this means that the FEM demonstrated 0.2nm resolution, which was theoretically possible for the assumed geometry. The calculated value of the magnification of the pattern was also consistent with the measured value if the value of the compression factor beta was set at 1.76.

Abstract:Field emission patterns of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were studied using the field emission microscopy (FEM). Mass spectra of desorbed residual gases were monitored with a quadruple mass spectrometer during processes of thermal treatment. After SWCNTs were treated at about 1000°C, the obtained field emission patterns were possibly atomically resolved, which might be produced by a (16, 0) zigzag SWCNT without cap. Results of mass spectra indicated that oxygen and carbon atoms were mainly released from the polycrystal tungsten tip at higher temperatures. The ends of SWCNTs could be modified by these atoms, which might be the reason that these field emission patterns of SWCNTs could be observed.

Abstract:Electron field-emission measurements on individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were performed inside the transmission electron microscope (TEM). The field-emission characteristics of CNTs with different tip structures were compared, and their field conversion factor and emission area were studied systematically. It was found that the field-emission characteristics of a CNT depend sensitively on its tip structure, and in particular an opened CNT was shown to be superior to a capped CNT. High-resolution TEM observations revealed that the tip of an opened CNT may, in general, be regarded as being composed of irregular shaped graphitic sheets, and these graphitic sheets have been found to improve dramatically the field-emission characteristics, but the sharp edge may result in larger error in the calculated emission area. The influence of uncertainty in the work function of the CNTs on the field conversion factor and emission area calculation was also investigated.

Abstract:Electron emission properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) assembled on a tungsten tip were investigated using field emission microscopy (FEM). The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrograph confirmed the existence of an SWCNT bundle on the W tip. Under appropriate experimental conditions, a series of FEM patterns with atomic resolution were obtained. These patterns arose possibly from the field emission of the open end of an individual (16,0) SWCNT protruding from the SWCNT bundle. The magnification factor and the resolution under our experimental conditions were calculated theoretically. If the value of the compression factor β was set at β=1.76, the calculated value of the magnification factor was in agreement with the measured value. The resolving power of FEM was determined by the resolution equation given by Gomer. The resolution of 0.277 nm could be achieved under the typical electric field of 5.0×10 7 V/cm, which was close to the interatomic separation 0.246 nm between carbon atoms along the zigzag edge at the open end for the (16, 0) SWCNT. Consequently, our experimental results were further supported by our theoretical calculation.

Abstract:Using Field Emission Microscopy ( FEM), the electron field emission from a bundle of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT's) was studied under vacuum better than 4.0 X 10(-7) Pa after being thermo-desorbed at different temperatures. Work function of the SWCNT's decreases as the temperature of desorption goes up. After heat treatment at 1000 degreesC, the SWCNT's exhibits the lowest work function and their electron field emission pattern also shows a fine structure. As the temperature for thermodesorption is raised further, the SWCNT's field emission power deteriorates and finally collapse of SWCNT's occurs.

Abstract:The field emission properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were investigated with field emission microscope (FEM). Field emission patterns of many SWCNTs were observed due to the similar length of SWCNTs, and patterns were found to change after SWCNTs were treated at different temperatures. Field emission patterns of SWCNTs are no longer observed if the heat treatment temperature is too high. The field emission pattern with fine structures and contrast modulations of a single SWCNT can be obtained under proper conditions. The current-voltage characteristics demonstrate that the current of SWCNTs is resulted from field emission.

Abstract:Field electron emission behavior of individual multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), that are elements of a vertically aligned array grown on a Si wafer, were analyzed with a scanning anode field emission microscope. The electron emission of each MWNT followed the conventional Fowler-Nordheim field emission mechanism after their apexes were freed from the erratic adsorption species using a conditioning process at room temperature. The conditioning process led to stable emission currents and reduced their variations DeltaI/I to less than 30% between different MWNTs of the array. This opens the possibility for using MWNTs in an array as independent electron sources for massively parallel microguns. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were synthesized by the catalytic decomposition of hydrocarbons using a floating catalyst method. Thin flakes consisting of aligned MWNTs were separated from the as-prepared products and then employed for the measurements of their field emission properties. The obtained results indicate that the aligned MWNTs are promising for field emission.

Abstract:A probe-hole Field Emission Microscope (FEM) features the capability of measuring the respective dependence of local and total field emission currents on applied voltage.A FEM equipped with a probe-hole,which could be submitted to two-dimensional motion,was employed to acquire curves of field emission current versus applied voltage of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs).The field emission currents were acquired from different regions and different adsorption states.Furthermore,the influence of heat treatment on current-voltage behaviors of the SWCNTs was also studied.

Abstract:In attempt to decipher the field emission characteristics of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), we have developed a fabrication method based on plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) to provide utmost control of the nanotube structure such as their alignment, individual position, diameter, length and morphology. We investigated the field emission properties of these nanotubes to elucidate the effect of adsorbates on the nanotubes. Our results show that although the adsorbates cause an apparent lowering of the required turn on voltage/field of the nanotubes, the adsorbates undesirably cause a saturation of the current, large temporal fluctuations in the current, and also a deviation of the emission characteristics from Fowler-Nordheim like emission. The adsorbates are easily removed by extracting an emission current of 1uA per nanotube or using a high applied electric field (similar to25V/um).

Abstract:Field-ion microscopy (FIM), a tool for surface analysis with atomic resolution, has been employed to observe the end structure of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). FIM images revealed the existence of open SWCNT ends. Amorphous carbon atoms were also observed to occur around SWCNTs and traditional field evaporation failed to remove them. Heat treatment was found to be efficacious in altering the end structures of SWCNT bundles. Carbon and oxygen atoms released from heated tungsten filament are believed to be responsible for the decoration imposed on the SWCNT ends.

Abstract:Electron emission from vertically aligned carbon nanotubes grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition has been measured using a parallel plate anode and a 1 mum tungsten probe. The field emission characteristics were measured as a function of the nanotube diameter, length, and areal density. It was found that less densely populated "short and stubby" nanotubes with diameters of 200 nm and heights of 0.7 mum showed the best emission characteristics with a threshold voltage of 2 V/mum and saturation emission current density of 10 mA/cm2. A triple junction between nanotube, substrate, and vacuum is proposed to explain our results. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Arrays of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were bombarded with argon ions a nd studied with transmission electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectr oscopy. Our preliminary results show that after 35min ion bombardment, most of the MWCNT curls and the iron catalyst particles residing at the top end of the tube were knocked out. Although no obvious change in its emission images is obse rved, its field emission current considerably decreases. During spontaneous cool ing down from an elevated temperature (480℃), its emission current decreases sh arply. Interesting finding is that the coating of phosphor powder on the tin-oxide-coated glass anode significantly affects the emission current measurement . For example, the phosphor coating reduces the measured current by over 30?tim es and increases the turnon field from 1.0 to 2.0V/μm.

Abstract:Micro and nano-structurally rich carbon materials are alternatives to conventional metal/silicon tips for field emission sources. In particular, carbon nanotubes exhibit extraordinary field emission properties because of their high electrical conductivity, their high aspect ratio "whisker-like'' shape for optimum geometrical field enhancement, and remarkable thermal stability. This paper will review the PECVD growth process, and the microfabrication techniques needed to produce well defined carbon nanotube based micro-electron sources for use in novel parallel e-beam lithography and high frequency microwave amplifier systems.

Abstract:Individual multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were assembled onto tungsten tips in a transmission-electron microscope. Then they were transferred into a field-emission microscope for the measurement of field-emission properties. Stable field emission was established after repeated heat treatment and extraction of field-emission current, which are believed to have cleaned and blunted the MWCNT ends. Even under high voltages and large currents, most of the emitted electrons that hit the screen were found to be still restricted within an similar to 10(-2) solid angle, indicating the possible availability of a high brightness.
