Abstract:A more flexible 3-methoxysalamo-like ligand H 2 L and its dinuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu 2 (L)(NO 3 ) 2 ] ( 1 ) and novel trinuclear Co(II) complex [{Co 3 (L) 2 ( μ 3 OAc) 2 } 2 ]⋅9CH 2 Cl 2 ( 2 ) were synthesized. The self-assembly reaction was driven by the unique N , O-donor coordination environments. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that two Cu(II) atoms occupy the N 2 O 2 and O 4 cavities of the ligand (L) 2− unit in complex 1 , respectively, and two oxygen atoms on the two mono-dentate nitrate groups have also participated in the coordination for the charge balance of complex 1 . The stretching of chemical bonds of complex 1 can be perfectly explained by the Jahn-Teller effect. The novel salamo-based Co(II) complex 2 containing μ 3 OAc − coordination mode was discovered for the first time. The trinuclear Co(II) complex embodies the advantage of the salamo-based ligand, which has a good flexible form. The binding ratio of the ligand to the Co(II) center was verified by a UV–Vis titration experiment, which is consistent with the single crystal X-ray diffraction result. The energy gaps between the ligand and complexes 1 and 2 were obtained by DFT calculations, and a new theory-softness was proposed. The degree of softness affected the shapes of the complexes. Hirshfeld analysis, IRI, and electrostatic potential proved the existence of hydrogen bond, π···π, CH···π interactions, and van der Waals force. These weak interaction forces affected the structures of the complexes. Finally, the fluorescence properties of the ligand and its complexes were studied.

Abstract:A novel Salen derivative Cu(II) complex was synthesized from copper(II) acetate monohydrate and 4,4',6,6'-tetra(tert-butyl)-2,2'-ethylenedioxybis(nitrilomethylidyne)diphenol(H2L) in anhydrous ethanol solvent.The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis,1H NMR,IR,TG-DTA and UV.The results indicated that H2L was a new Salen-type bisoxime ligand,and the structural formula of the complex was suggested as Cu(C32H46N2O4).

Abstract:Centrosymmetric homopolynuclear Cu(II) and Co(II) chelated complexes, [Cu 2 (L)(H 2 O) 2 ] ( 1 ) and [Co 4 (L)( μ -OAc) 2 (CH 3 OH) 4 (OA C ) 2 ]⋅2CH 2 Cl 2 ( 2 ), were synthesized using a new symmetrical methoxy-disubstituted bis(salamo)-type ligand, H 4 L, with Cu(II) and Co(II) salts in organic solvents. Complexes 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The results indicated that 1 is a five-coordinate dinuclear structure containing Cu(II) and 2 is a tetranuclear Co(II) complex with two distinct six-coordinate environments. Furthermore, 1 and 2 pack into three-dimensional and two-dimensional extended networks, respectively. The UV–Vis spectra, IR spectra, and Hirshfeld surface analyses of the complexes were carried out to further characterize the coordination between H 4 L and the metal(II) ions. Fluorescence methods were used to interrogate the coordination, where changes in emission with varied amounts of ligand supported solution-phase coordination ratios of H 4 L with Cu(II) ion of 1:2 and with Co(II) ion of 1:4, respectively.

Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic Metal-Organic and Nano-Metal Chemistry

Abstract:The title compound 1, with the formula of [Zn(C44H48N2O6)center dot DMF]2, is a Zn-salen complex. The asymmetric unit of the complex contains two subtle different molecules of the complex. The Zn center adopts a distorted square pyramidal geometry with the equatorial plane occupied by the central N2O2 donors of the salen ligand and the apical position by one oxygen atom of DMF molecule. The zinc salen complex extends its structure via intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions and CH center dot center dot center dot interactions. The title compound is potentially a good building block for the construction of highly porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and homogeneous catalyst.

Abstract:Two hydroxo-bridged complexes, {[Mn(III)(3-CH(3)O)salen](2)[Cr(III)(salen)(OH)(2)]}ClO(4)·6H(2)O (1) and {[Mn(III)(5-CH(3))salen](2)(OH)}ClO(4)·3H(2)O (2) [salen = N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminato) dianion], have been synthesized by the hydrolysis of the corresponding Mn(III)(Schiff-Bases) derivatives and [Cr(salen)(H(2)O)(2)]Cl precursors. X-Ray structure characterization reveals the discrete linear arched trinuclear structure of 1 and the 1D chain arrangement of 2. Magnetic experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) calculations both indicate the dominant antiferromagnetic interaction mediated by the hydroxo-bridges in both 1 and 2. Frequency-dependent AC susceptibilities reveal slow relaxation of 1 in low temperature. It is worth noting that the structure and magnetic properties of 1 is comparable to a reported cyano-bridged SMM, K[(5-Brsalen)(2)(H(2)O)(2)Mn(2)Cr(CN)(6)]·2H(2)O.

Abstract:Salen ligand L1 reacts with Ru3(CO)12 to give a normal cis-β-[RuII(salen)L1(CO)2] complex and also a novel alkoxo-bridged dinuclear ruthenium schiff-base complex. Both complexes has been isolated as pure crystalline solids in moderate yields and their structures have been fully established by X-ray structure analysis. The dinuclear ruthenium complex was found to be an efficient catalyst for intramolecular cyclopropanation of trans-alkenes.

Abstract:Three new salen-type 3d–4f heteronuclear metal complexes incorporating with the semi-rigid ligand N,N′-bis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (H2L), namely, [(CuClL)LaCl2(CH3OH)3]·H2O (1), [(CuClL)DyCl2(CH3OH)2] (2) and [(CuClL)2GdCl2(CH3OH)2] (3), have been isolated. X-ray crystallographic analysis indicates that 1 and 2 possess the typical heterodinuclear structures, while, complex 3 has a trinuclear structure. In 1–3, the Cu2+ ion is in the N2O2 cavity of the ligand and the lanthanide ions are to the O2O2 set of the ligand. The coordination numbers of the lanthanide ions are reduced from 9 to 8 along with lanthanide contraction. These results further enrich the structures of salen type 3d–4f heteronuclear complexes.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of two complexes from the ligand α-(2-Salsayl)-N-phenyl nitrone with CoCl2 and CrCl2. The ligand was characterized by several spectroscopic techniques (ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR and 13C-NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and mass spectrometry (MS). While infrared, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), thermal analysis, and job method studies were used to reveal the structure of the complexes. The synthesized complexes were then synthesized by the sonochemical method, and the copper and chromium oxide nanoparticles were produced using the thermal decomposition method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization confirmed the formation of Co3O4 and Cr2O3 nanoparticles. Antimicrobial studies of the complexes against some microorganisms, such as Staphylococcus epidermis and Escherichia coli, utilizing the disk diffusion method, revealed the antibacterial activity of the complexes.

Abstract:Herein, a new preparation strategy of chiral metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs) has been demonstrated. By adsorption and then post-synthetically modified (PSM) procedures, chiral salen(Co(III)) could be imprisoned within the cages of an MOF and remained in its free form. This is the first report on the successful application of CMOFs in heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis for coupling CO2 with epoxides to obtain optically active cyclic carbonates at room temperature.

Abstract:A homochiral complex, Zn-3(Hsalen)(2)(Py)(4)(H2O)(2) (salen = (1R,2R)-(-)-diaminocyclohexane-N,N'-biscarboxyl-salicylidene) 1, has been synthesized by Solvothermal procedure and characterized by IR, microanalysis, TGA, powder and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. It crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2 with a = 10.9439(7), b = 10.1722(6), c = 27.3450(17) angstrom, beta = 97.5060(10)degrees, V = 3018.1(3) angstrom(3), Z = 2, Zn-3(Hsalen)(2)(Py)(4)(H2O)(2), M-r = 1363.33, D-c = 1.500 g/cm(3), F(000) = 1408, mu = 1.257 mm(-1), GOOF = 1.042, the final R = 0.0601 and wR = 0.1464 for 10322 observed reflections with I > 2 sigma(I). The coordination polymer 1 possesses a 1D infinite zigzag chain architecture constructed by strong hydrogen bonding interactions and the polymeric chains are further assembled into a 2D supramolecular network structure via C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions between the cyclohexane and aromatic rings of the ligand of adjacent chains. Simultaneously, pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking interactions play an important role in forming the 2D supramolecular framework.

The crystal structures of 1 and 2 are isostructural with very similar supramolecular structures. An infinite two-dimensional network is generated by hydrogen bonding interactions and intermolecular)pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions.

Abstract:A mononuclear complex 1, of Mn(III) with a Schiff-base ligand L [L = N,N′-ethylenebis(3-formyl-5-methylsalicylaldimine)] has been synthesized and structurally characterized. A series of binuclear complexes, MnML′Clxsolvy [M = Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Fe(III), and Mn(III); x = 3 or 4 depending on the oxidation state of M; L′ is the aniline condensation product of L; y = 1, 2 or 3 and solv = H2O or CH3OH] have been prepared by the reaction of 1, aniline and M(II/III) chloride with a 1∶3∶1.2 molar ratio in methanolic media. These bimetallic complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, UV-Vis and IR spectroscopies, magnetic susceptibilities and thermogravimetric analyses. The results of magnetic susceptibility measurements at 300 K indicate that all the metal ions are in their high spin states. The catalytic properties of these complexes for epoxidation of alkenes have been investigated using PhIO as a terminal oxidant. The binuclear Mn(III) complexes are less efficient epoxidation catalysts than the mononuclear Mn(III) complex, 1. The reduced activities of the bimetallic complexes may be due to both the low rates of formation of a Mn(V)O intermediate and the transfer of oxygen from this intermediate to the alkene. Furthermore, the bimetallic complexes also transformed into a catalytically inactive species in the presence of PhIO as indicated by UV-Vis spectroscopic studies.

Abstract:Two new chiral salen-manganese(Ⅲ) complexes were synthesized and employed in the enan- tioselective epoxidation of indene in the presence of pyridine N-oxide and ammonium acetate as co- catalysts,respectively.Moderate to excellent enantioselectivity and acceptable yields were achieved when NaClO had been used as the terminal oxidant under CH_2Cl_2/H_2O biphasic media.These two epoxidation catalysts should have certain phase-transfer capability due to the methylene aminoalkyl groups on the 5, 5'-positions of their manganese salen matrixes.

Abstract:Salen ligands are a class of Schiff bases simply obtained through condensation of two molecules of a hydroxyl-substituted aryl aldehyde with an achiral or chiral diamine. The prototype salen, or N,N′-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine has a long history, as it was first reported in 1889, and immediately, some of its metal complexes were also described. Now, the salen ligands are a class of N,N,O,O tetradentate Schiff bases capable of coordinating many metal ions. The geometry and the stereogenic group inserted in the diamine backbone or aryl aldehyde backbone have been utilized in the past to efficiently transmit chiral information in a variety of different reactions. In this review we will summarize the important and recent achievements obtained in stereocontrolled reactions in which Al(salen) metal complexes are employed. Several other reviews devoted to the general applications and synthesis of chromium and other metal salens have already been published.

Abstract:A pair of uranyl complexes incorporating tetrahydrosalen and N,N-dimethyltetrahydrosalen ligands are synthesized and studied. These new ligands, with saturated secondary and tertiary amines, exhibit higher chemostability than the prototype Schiff base (salen) structure, especially under acidic conditions. As shown by X-ray diffraction crystallography, the coordination geometry of uranium in these new complexes is a distorted pentagonal bipyramid. Interestingly, UO2([H-4]-salen), comprising the tetrahydrosalen ligand, forms a dimeric structure in the crystals, with two subunits held together by sharing one of the two phenoxy oxygen atoms from each subunit, whereas UO2([H2Me2]-salen) with the N,N-dimethyltetrahydrosalen ligand is in the monomer state, with a solvent molecule coordinated to uranium to complete the penta-coordination configuration. Moreover, as revealed by UV/Vis spectroscopy using the colorimetry method, these hydrogenated salen ligands exhibit comparable, or even higher, binding affinities toward uranyl than the prototype Schiff base salen ligand in weakly basic solution.
