Abstract:Novel tungsten and molybdenum complexes of fullerene [M(eta(2)-C-60)(CO)(2)(phen)(dbm)]. C6H6 . C5H12 (M = W 1 or Mo 2; dbm = dibutyl maleate; phen = I,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized by heating a solution of C-60 with [M(CO)(4)(phen)] and dbm in toluene followed by chromatography over silica gel. They have been characterized by chemical analysis, IR, UV/VIS, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The complexes are isomorphous. The metal atom co-ordination is distorted octahedral with the two CO groups and phen in the equatorial plane and the metal binds in an eta(2) fashion to C-C bonds of C-60 and dbm. Both complexes are remarkably stable in air and have unusually good solubility.

Progress in chemistry

Abstract:Fullerene oxides play an important role in studying functionalization of carbon clusters, which stimulated the interest of scientists. The progress in study of the structures, electronic spectra, IR spectra and NMR spectra for the fullerene oxides C-60, O-n, C70On, C76On, C78On and C80On is reviewed comprehensively. Relevant works worldwide hitherto are introduced. The regularity of structural characteristics and spectroscopy for fullerene oxides is further explored according to author's own theoretical research in this field. Based on the agreement between calculating and experimental results on oxides of C-60 and C-70, the structures and spectra of oxides for higher fullerenes are predicted.

Abstract:Both dinuclear [3] ferrocenophane derivatives of the type Fe(C5H4E)(2)[MLn] [E = S,Se; MLn = Cp* - Cr(NO) (1), Cp* Mo(NO) (2a,2b), CpMo(NO) (3), Cp* W(NO) (4a,4b), Ca2Mo (6b), Cp2W (7a)] and trinuclear 1,1' - ferrocene dichalcogenato complexes Fe(C5H4E)(2)[MLn](2)[MLn = Cp* Cr(NO)(2), E = S(8a), Se(8b)] were synthesized and characterized by their IR, H-1 MMR and EI - MS spectra as well as their elemental analyses.

Abstract:Through the reaction of Fe-2(SO4)(3)/HOAc aqueous solution with sodium eta(5)-substituted or unsubstituted cyclopentadienyltricarbonylmolybdenate(tungstate) salts Na[M(eta(5)-C5H4R)(CO)(3)], eight bis(eta(5)-substituted or unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl) hexacarbonyldimolybdenum (tungsten) complexes [(eta(5)-C5H4R)(CO)(3)M](2) (M = Mo, R = H (1), COH (2), COC6H5 (3), COC6H4COOCH3 (4); M = W, R = H (5), COH (6), COC6H5 (7), COC6H4COOCH3 (8)) were prepared and characterized by analysis, IR and H-1 NMR spectra. The molecular structure of complex (3) was determined by single-crystal X-ray methods.

Abstract:Using sulfide ion to substitute the weakly copper(I)-philic ligands of MS(4)(-)(n)()(2)(-)O(n)()/Cu(+) compounds, (M = Mo, W; n = 0, 1), we have prepared and characterized four novel tetradecanuclear clusters having the general formula [(n-Bu)(4)N](4)[M(4)Cu(10)S(16)E(2)E']H(2)O, (M = Mo, E = E' = O for complex 1; M = W, E = (1)/(2)O + (1)/(2)S, E' = O, for complex 2; M = Mo, E = S, E' = (1)/(2)O + (1)/(2)S for complex 3; M = W, E = E' = S, for complex 4). Crystal structures of compounds 1-4 were determined; they are isomorphous and crystallized in the orthorhombic space group Pna2(1), with a = 26.6997(2) Å, b = 19.3133(4) Å, c = 21.4577(4) Å, V = 11064.9(3) Å(3), Z = 4 for [(n-Bu)(4)N](4)[Mo(4)Cu(10)S(18)O].H(2)O (3) and with a = 26.8141(8) Å, b = 19.4412(6) Å, c = 21.4039(5) Å, V = 11157.8(5) Å(3), Z = 4 for [(n-Bu)(4)N](4)[W(4)Cu(10)S(19)].H(2)O (4). The cluster cores have approximate sigma symmetry. The anions 1-4 may be viewed as consisting of one incomplete cubane-like Cu(3)MS(3)E fragment, one trigonal prism-type Cu(3)MS(4), and two butterfly-type Cu(2)MS(3)E' fragments, bridged by two &mgr;(3)-S and one &mgr;(4)-S atoms. There are two (&mgr;(3)-S)Cu(3) configurations in the compounds. Infrared, Raman, and UV/vis spectra of the above compounds are discussed, and the main absorption bands are assigned. (95)Mo NMR spectra and cylic voltammograms are investigated and compared with those of other compounds, (95)Mo NMR spectra show that in the solution there are three kinds of coordination environments of Mo in complexes 1 and 3, and cyclic voltammograms indicate that complexes 1-4 have irreversible electrochemical reductions.

Abstract:The (Bu 4 N) 2 [{Mo 6 I 8 }(CN) 5 (OEt)]·2H 2 O and (Bu 4 N) 2 [{W 6 I 8 }(CN) 4 (OEt) 2 ]·H 2 O·EtOH cluster complexes are prepared by the reaction of (Bu 4 N) 2 [{ M 6 I 8 }I 6 ] ( M = Mo, W) with NaCN in ethanol and subsequent recrystallization from an aqueous ethanol solution. The structure of both compounds is determined by XRD. The external ligand environment of the anions contains CN – and OEt – ligands. The behavior of the complexes in an aqueous solution is studied by electron spectroscopy.

Abstract:Reaction of bis(acetylacetonato)dioxomolybdenum(VI) with 4-fluoro-2-((pyridin-2-ylmethylene)amino)phenol and 3-methyl-2-((pyridin-2-ylmethylene)amino)phenol, respectively in methanol afforded two new molybdenum complexes [MoO2L1] and [MoO2L2], where L1 and L2 are the dianionic form of 3-(((5-fluoro-2-hydroxyphenyl)amino)(pyridin-2-yl)methyl)pentane-2,4-dione (H2L1) and 3-(((2-hydroxy-6-methylphenyl)amino)(pyridin-2-yl)methyl)pentane-2,4-dione (H2L2). Both complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV–Vis, 1H and 13C NMR spectra. Molecular structures of the complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. In the complexes, the ligands coordinated to the Mo atoms via pyridine nitrogen, amino nitrogen, phenolate oxygen, and enolate oxygen atoms. The octahedral coordination of the Mo atoms is furnished by two oxido oxygen atoms. The complexes were evaluated for their antibacterial activities on Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas fluorescens, and antifungal activities on Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger, and gave interesting results.

3d Transition Metal-Metallofullerene-Ligand Molecular Wires: Robust One-Dimensional Antiferromagnetic Semiconductors

Abstract:The structures and properties of one-dimensional (1D) sandwich molecular wires constructed with altering 3d transition metal (TM) and the metallofullerene (Tm@C-60) entities, [TM&(TM@C-60)](infinity), are studied using density functional theory calculations. Different from the bonding character insensitivity to TM of previously reported 1D [TMBz](infinity) and [TMCp](infinity) analogues, the bonding characters of the investigated 1D [TM&(TM@C-60)](infinity) molecular wires depend heavily on the identity of metal elements. In 1D [TM&(TM@C-60)](infinity), molecular wires with early TMs like Ti and V, TM-eta(5) coordinate bonds are favored. In contrast, TM-eta(6) bonding conformations are energetically preferred for those with later TMs, for example, Cr-Ni. Bader charge analysis reveals that valence electrons are transferred from both encapsulated and sandwiched TM atoms to the C-60 ligand. More importantly, all the molecular wires in ground states are robust antiferromagnetic semiconductors because of the peierls distortion of the configurations and the moderate binding energies. Therefore, the fabrication of endohedral metallofullerenes offers an effective route to regulate the magnetism and electronic properties of C-60-ligand sandwich complexes.

Abstract:The reactions of octacyanometallates [M(CN)(8)](3-) (M = Mo, W) and lanthanide ions Ln(3+) (Ln = Pr, Sm, Eu) through the solution diffusion method in the presence of chelated aromatic ligands 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 3,4,7,8-tetramethy1-1,10-phenanthroline (tmphen) have yielded five new [M(CN)(8)](3-)-based bimetallic complexes with helical structures: [Ln(phen)(2)(H2O)Mo(CN)(8)](2)[(n-C4H9)(4)N](NO3)center dot 2CH(3)CN center dot 4H(2)O [Ln = Sm(1), Eu(2)], [Sm(tmphen)(2)(DMF)(2)][W(CN)(8)]center dot 2H(2)O (3), and [Pr(tmphen)(DMF)(3)][M(CN)(8)]center dot DMF center dot 2H(2)O [M = Mo(4), W(5)]. The Ln(3+) centers are linked alternately by [M(CN)(8)](3-) units through two trans V-shaped cyano groups to form the left- and right-handed helical chains running along the screw axis. Magnetic measurements revealed the presence of an antiferromagnetic interaction between metal centers in 4 and S.

Abstract:Endohedral fullerenes are remarkable molecules that offer a unique paradigm in the molecular world: the trapping of atom(s) or clusters in a 3-dimensional, almost perfectly symmetrical structure. The electron deficient nature of the fullerene surface makes it amenable to a range of chemical reactions. Hence the fullerene can obtain functionality and become a building block of larger molecular structures. Careful engineering of the endohedral species and of the exohedral adduct can modify the electronic, optical, as well as chemical and physical properties of the molecule. The last few years have seen an increase in the chemical functionalization of these molecules. The present article reviews the current state-of-the-art in the synthesis and chemistry of endohedral fullerenes with particular focus on endohedral nitrogen fullerenes such as N@C-60.

Abstract:The total synthesis of carbon onions is a significant challenge in the fields of materials science and organic chemistry. To date, the synthesis of even a fragment of fullerene C240 and its smallest carbon onion C60@C240 remains poorly explored. Herein, we demonstrate a bottom-up strategy to produce a novel π-extended molecular crown-shaped molecule (MC3) containing curved pentagonal and hexagonal units. This molecular crown represents a curved model compound for fullerene C240 and is fully characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry, UV-vis absorption, and from its emission spectra. Its supramolecular host–guest interaction with fullerene C60 is also investigated. MC3 and C60@MC3 can potentially be employed as seeds or templates for the bottom-up synthesis of fullerene C240 and the carbon onion C60@C240, respectively.

Abstract:Two novel cis-dioxotungsten (VI) complexes, [WO2(La)2](1) and [WO2(Lb)2R2Pr](2) [La=2-methoxypyridine, Lb=2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene, R=the six-member ring ion (C5H11N2), Pr=1,3-propanediamine] have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectra. It is found that the tungsten atom is coordinated in a pseudo-octahedral fashion by two cis–oxo functions. The complex 1 is a neutral molecule, which is packed in crystal lattice via O⋯H–C hydrogen bonds and π–π interactions while there are two six-member ring cations (C5H11N2) to compensate the negative charge of [W(VI)(OC10H6O)2]2− anion in complex 2. The new molecules of C5H11N2 are the by-products produced by the protonated 1,3-propanediamine and ethanenitrile.

Abstract:Three novel fullerene derivatives containing a C60-fluorene core and thiophenyl, terthiophenyl and tetrathiophenyl groups grafted at the 2-position of the fluorene ring, respectively, were synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated systematically. The results showed that their UV-vis absorption bands in the range of 350–500 nm were much wider and stronger than that of the traditional fullerene derivative PC61BM, and the LUMO energy levels of the synthesized fullerene derivatives were gradually up-shifted by increasing of the number of thiophene rings in the oligothiophene units.
