Abstract:A collisional magnetized plasma sheath with two groups of electrons has been studied using a fluid model including the effects of the ionization source term and the collisional force between ions and neutral atoms. Two kinds of non-Maxwellian descriptions of electron velocity distribution, non-extensive distribution and truncated distribution, are applied in the model, and the ionization effects of both kinds are considered. By applying Sagdeev potential, the modified Bohm sheath criterion is derived. The effects of ionization, magnetic field, and high-temperature electron concentration ratio on plasma sheath density, potential, sheath thickness, and ion kinetic energy are studied. In cases with high background gas density, ion density accumulates at the sheath edge position, forming a peak and manifesting as a rapid drop in the potential profile. The distribution characteristics of electrons have a significant impact on the transport properties of ions. Oscillations and non-monotonic characteristics of net charge near the sheath edge occur as the magnetic field angle increases, leading to an increase in the sheath layer width. It can be seen that in the case of a collisional sheath structure with high-temperature electrons, it is essential to consider the sheath changes induced by the ionization and the collisional force. Compared to a symmetric electron velocity distribution, the actual thickness of the sheath layer in a truncated electron distribution assumption could be significantly reduced.

Abstract:A simple collisional radio frequency (rf) sheath fluid model, which is not restricted by the ratio of rf frequency to ion plasma frequency (β = ωrf/ωpi), was established and solved numerically. In the ion balance equation, the effect of the collision on the ion and the ion velocity is assumed to be a direct ratio to ion velocity. The ion energy distributions (IEDs) calculated in the model in comparison with the experimental data [M. A. Sobolewski, J. K. Olthoff, and Y. C. Wang, J. Appl. Phys. 85, 3966 (1999)], proved the validity of the model. And the effect of the collision on the sheath characteristic was obtained and discussed. This paper demonstrates that the collision frequency is another crucial parameter as well as the ratio β to determine the rf sheath characteristics and the shape of IEDs.

Abstract:A solid target in contact with a plasma charges (negatively) to reflect the more mobile species (electrons) and thus keep the bulk plasma quasineutral. To shield the bulk plasma from the charged target, there is an oppositely (positively) charged sheath with a sharp electrostatic potential variation on the Debye length scale λ D . In magnetised plasmas where the magnetic field is inclined at an oblique angle α with the target, some of the sheath potential variation occurs also on the ion sound gyroradius length scale ρ S cos α, caused by finite ion gyro-orbit distortion and losses. We consider a collisionless and steady-state magnetised plasma sheath whose thickness l ms ∽ max (λ D , ρ S cos α) is smaller than the characteristic length scale L of spatial fluctuations in the bulk plasma, such that the limit l ms / L → 0 is appropriate. Spatial structures are assumed to be magnetic field-aligned. In the case of small magnetic field angle α ∽ δ ≡ ρ S / L <<1, electric fields tangential to the target transport ions towards the target via ExB drifts at a rate comparable to the one from parallel streaming. A generalised form of the kinetic Bohm-Chodura criterion at the sheath entrance is derived by requiring that the sheath electric field have a monotonic spatial decay far from the target. The criterion depends on tangential gradients of potential and ion distribution function, with additional nontrivial conditions.

Abstract:Research on the dynamic properties of a plasma sheath coupled with pitching motion of the vehicle has great signifi-cance in solving the problem of communication interruption in the process of vehicle reentry. This paper investigates the dynamic properties of the plasma sheath by using the simplified conventional Burnett (SCB) equations and the Navier-Stokes (NS) equa-tions with the thermochemical non-equilibrium effect. The eleven-species chemical kinetic models are applied to the comparison and there is verification of a dynamic plasma sheath simulation for the first time. After the introduction of vehicle pitching motion, the dynamic results are more consistent with the experimental data than the simulated results when treating it as static state. The plasma sheath characteristic parameters show periodic properties, whose changing period is the same as the pitching motion period. However, because of different velocities of the pitching motion, phase shifts exist in different positions of the vehicle. The enhancement of the rarefied effect weakens the disturbance to the plasma sheath. This research reveals the distribution and reg-ularities of the dynamic plasma sheath. It is significant in solving the ionization blackout problem and the design of the reentry vehicle, and provides reliable data for further research on the dynamic plasma sheath.

Abstract:Hypersonic vehicles are enveloped by a plasma sheath that affects the data transmission and object identification. This paper develops a numerical methodology based on Magnetohydrodynamics equations to study the electromagnetic environment of hypersonic vehicles under the condition of carbon-based thermal protection material ablation. A surface ablation model considering the oxidation and sublimation ablation process is coupled with a Navier–Stokes solver by a gas–solid interaction method to simulate the ablation plasma flows. A piecewise linear current density recursive convolution finite-difference time-domain method is applied to further analyze the interaction between the incident electromagnetic wave and the plasma sheath. The computational results for an HTV-2 type vehicle indicate that both ablation and non-ablation plasma sheaths have significant effects on the electromagnetic environment of the vehicle. Compared with a non-ablation plasma sheath, ablation results in a decrease in the number of electrons and increases the number of neutral particles and therefore changes characteristic parameters of the plasma. Details of the electromagnetic scattering characteristics are reported to highlight the influences of ablation on the reflectivity, penetrability, and absorptivity of the plasma sheath for incident electromagnetic waves over different bands.

Abstract:In the limit of a small Debye length (λD→0) the plasma boundary layer in front of a negative absorbing wall is split up into a collision-free planar space charge sheath and a quasineutral presheath, where the ions are accelerated to fulfill the Bohm criterion. Apart from ion inertia, the mechanism of the presheath depends on an additional effect controlling the ion field acceleration. The present paper considers a stationary presheath dominated by the deflection of the ion orbits in a magnetic field parallel to the wall. The ion transport is provided by charge exchange collisions with cold neutrals. The potential profiles and ion distributions resulting from the self-consistent kinetic analysis are compared with expectations based on a previous hydrodynamic model. The transition from ‘‘closed’’ to ‘‘open’’ ion orbits results in typical deviations near the sheath edge. The kinetic Bohm criterion is found to be fulfilled marginally.

Abstract:We investigate the sheath structure of an electronegative plasma at steady state with the assumptions of cold positive ions and hot negative ions. The modified Bohm criterion is obtained with the Sagdeev potential by introducing a modified ion sound velocity. At the same time the electric potential, net space charge and particles densities in the sheath are analysed in several cases of different temperature ratios of electrons to negative ions and different density ratios of negative ions to positive ions.

Abstract:Past studies of plasma sheaths enveloping vehicles have shown that the distribution of plasma is time-varying and results in communication and navigation problems. This paper aims to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the plasma sheath through the simulations of the Radio Attenuation Measurements-C II vehicle and the Apollo command module flowfields. The numerical methodology is based on the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model and the detached-eddy simulation model, and the thermochemical nonequilibrium effect is considered. The stable flows of both vehicles with a steady plasma sheath widely distributed in the shock-wave layer are first obtained. For the Radio Attenuation Measurements-C II vehicle, the dynamic plasma arising from the vehicle pitching oscillation has the same frequency as the vehicle oscillation, and the magnitude of the disturbance to plasma is related to the oscillation velocity. For the Apollo command module, the oscillation period of the electron density is the same as the evolution period of the vortex structures in the leeward regions. The time-varying surface electron density and pressure reveal a similar variation trend with the phase difference. In addition, the periodicity of the dynamic plasma disappears as the flow instability intensifies in the Apollo command module flowfields, whereas periodic plasma exists for a long time in the Radio Attenuation Measurements-C II vehicle oscillation flowfields.
Effects of Ion Temperature on Collisionless and Collisional Rf Sheath

Abstract:A numerical two-fluid simulation of the non-ionized radio frequency (rf) sheath model, has been carried out. This model is "global" and thus applicable to the sheath, pre-sheath and plasma regions, In the model all variables in the ion force balance equation, including the electrical force, ion pressure and neutral particle friction, are considered. The model is solved through a finite difference scheme and sheath characteristics are obtained. The effects of the ion temperature on both the collisionless and collisional sheath characteristics are discussed. Then it is concluded that 1) the model is in a good agreement with Bohm Theorem; 2) the ion temperature has significant effects on the rf sheath characteristics. The effects are far more significant on a collisional rf sheath than on a collisionless sheath.

Abstract:The boundary sheath of a low temperature plasma comprises typically only a small fraction of its volume but is responsible for many aspects of the macroscopic behavior. A thorough understanding of the sheath dynamics is therefore of theoretical and practical importance. This work focusses on the so-called "algebraic" approach which strives to describe the electrical behavior of RF modulated boundary sheaths in closed analytical form, i.e., without the need to solve differential equations. A mathematically simple, analytical expression for the charge-voltage relation of a sheath is presented which holds for all excitation wave forms and amplitudes and covers all regimes from the collision-less motion at low gas pressure to the collision dominated motion at gas high pressure. A comparison with the results of self-consistent particle-in-cell simulations is also presented.

Abstract:The hydrodynamic-fluid model and the self-consistent dust charging model are used to investigate the Bohm criterion for the dusty plasma sheath. The variation of the ion critical Mach number and the dust Mach number with dust density are presented, and the relation between the dust surface potential and the dust density at the sheath edge is discussed. It is shown that the ion velocity entering the sheath would exceed the ion sound velocity due to the existence of dust particles. The ion critical Mach number began declining after a maximum with the incessant increase of the dust density. The numerical results satisfy the qualitative analysis of the Sagdeev potential.

Abstract:The present paper numerically investigates the sheath structure in a collisional electronegative plasma in the presence of non-zero ion source term. The plasma sheath contains non-extensively distributed electrons, fluid positive ions with finite temperature, and Boltzmann-distributed negative ions. Using the Sagdeev potential method, a modified Bohm sheath criterion is derived to obtain the ion velocity at the sheath entrance that satisfies the sheath formation condition. The impact of the main parameters like electronegativity D, non-extensivity q, ionization frequency and collision frequency on the sheath characteristics has been examined. The requirement of positive ion velocity to enter the sheath is found to decrease with the increment of and . Moreover, it is seen that as q, D, and increase, the normalized electric potential rapidly rises, the peak amplitude of the space charge density increases, and the sheath thickness significantly decreases. Furthermore, as D decreases, the effect of q, and on the sheath electric potential and the space charge density becomes more important. This study may be useful in various technological applications, including plasma-based surface treatments, plasma etching, and plasma cleaning. This is particularly relevant in the microelectronic and semiconductor industries for manufacturing electronic devices and integrated circuits. Additionally, it could contribute to the enhancement and advancement of techniques in fusion energy research.

Abstract:In plasma source ion implantations, a target immersed directly in a uniform plasma is biased with a high negative voltage pulse. Then an expanding plasma sheath forms between the plasma and the solid target surface, and implants ions into the material. In this paper, the evolution of collisionless and collisional sheaths in different geometries, and for various gas pressures, has been numerically studied using a one-dimensional fluid model. Collisions are included in the model through a collisional drag term in the equation of ion motion. Besides the sheath evolution, plots for the average kinetic energy as well as the current density of ion implantations at the target surface are presented. For the collisional sheath, it is found that the final sheath thickness in planar and spherical (or cylindrical) geometries differs from each other significantly. Also, computational results of the collisional sheath in different geometries are in good agreement with those obtained by analytic models.

Analytical model for the radio-frequency sheath

Abstract:A simple analytical model for the planar radio-frequency (rf) sheath in capacitive discharges is developed that is based on the assumptions of a step profile for the electron front, charge exchange collisions with constant cross sections, negligible ionization within the sheath, and negligible ion dynamics. The continuity, momentum conservation, and Poisson equations are combined in a single integro-differential equation for the square of the ion drift velocity, the so called sheath equation. Starting from the kinetic Boltzmann equation, special attention is paid to the derivation and the validity of the approximate fluid equation for momentum balance. The integrals in the sheath equation appear in the screening function which considers the relative contribution of the temporal mean of the electron density to the space charge in the sheath. It is shown that the screening function is quite insensitive to variations of the effective sheath parameters. The two parameters defining the solution are the ratios of the maximum sheath extension to the ion mean free path and the Debye length, respectively. A simple general analytic expression for the screening function is introduced. By means of this expression approximate analytical solutions are obtained for the collisionless as well as the highly collisional case that compare well with the exact numerical solution. A simple transition formula allows application to all degrees of collisionality. In addition, the solutions are used to calculate all static and dynamic quantities of the sheath, e.g., the ion density, fields, and currents. Further, the rf Child-Langmuir laws for the collisionless as well as the collisional case are derived. An essential part of the model is the a priori knowledge of the wave form of the sheath voltage. This wave form is derived on the basis of a cubic charge-voltage relation for individual sheaths, considering both sheaths and the self-consistent self-bias in a discharge with arbitrary symmetry. The externally applied rf voltage is assumed to be sinusoidal, although the model can be extended to arbitrary wave forms, e.g., for dual-frequency discharges. The model calculates explicitly the cubic correction parameter in the charge-voltage relation for the case of highly asymmetric discharges. It is shown that the cubic correction is generally moderate but more pronounced in the collisionless case. The analytical results are compared to experimental data from the literature obtained by laser electric field measurements of the mean and dynamic fields in the capacitive sheath for various gases and pressures. Very good agreement is found throughout.

Abstract:The sheath structures of strongly electronegative plasmas are investigated on basis of the accurate Bohm criterion obtained by Sagdeev potential. It is found that the presheath transition between the bulk plasma and the sheath almost does not exist there, and that distributions of electrons, negative and positive ions in the sheath form a pure positive ion sheath near the boundary of the electrode. Furthermore, the density distribution of space net charge has a peak near the sheath edge, the spatial potential within the sheath falls faster, and the sheath thickness becomes thinner.
Experimental quantification of ion flux reduction at the sheath edge due to ion–neutral collisions in low temperature plasmas

Abstract:Reduction of the ion flux at the sheath edge due to ion–neutral collisions in low temperature DC plasmas is experimentally quantified for low to intermediate neutral gas pressures (<102 mTorr). The reduction factor is defined as a ratio of the ion flux at the sheath edge in a collisional plasma to that in a collisionless limit in this work. Its quantification as a function of the collisionality with a Langmuir probe has been hindered since the measured data contain two intermingled effects, namely, the flux reduction and the sheath expansion, which are difficult to isolate one from the other. The sheath expansion effect with and without the flux reduction effect are analyzed, and by comparing the two, the reduction factor as a function of the collisionality has been estimated with Langmuir probe data from approximately 1000 systematic scans of the plasma conditions. Neutral gas pressures ranging from 0.2–30.0 mTorr for Ar and 1.0–65.0 mTorr for He discharges are generated in a multidipole chamber with hot filaments. The estimated reduction factors are found to agree with the results from the particle-in-cell simulations for He discharges [Beving et al., Plasma Sources Sci. Technol. 31, 084009 (2022)]. The estimated reduction factors for Ar discharges are larger than those for He discharges, and the dependence of the reduction factor on species is discussed. Reduction of the ion flux at the sheath edge at intermediate gas pressures highlights the importance of taking into account ion–neutral collisions in many plasma applications.

Abstract:A collisional-radiative model is developed for population calculations of plasmas in non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE). Configuration-averaged rate coefficients are used in the rate equations. The cross sections are calculated based on the first perturbation theory. Wave functions required in cross-section calculations are obtained by Hatree–Fock–Slater self-consistent-field model. The kinetic model is applied to low- and high-Z plasmas. The results are compared with those of other theoretical models and experiments. Comparisons show that the present results of the mean charge state are 1-2 ionization stage lower than the experimental ones.

Abstract:We have studied the effects of the magnetic field on the active electronegative plasma sheath properties and dust charging process in the sheath region for two different collisional models: constant ion mean free path and constant ion mobility using 1d3v fluid hydrodynamics model. It is found that the magnetic field strength and choice of collisional models have a significant effect on the active plasma sheath characteristics and charging of an isolated dust grain. The sheath criterion for an active electronegative magnetized plasma for both collisional models has been extended, and the effects of neutral gas pressure, source frequency, obliqueness of magnetic field, and initial electric field at sheath edge are graphically illustrated. There are two distinct regions observed in the sheath region: magnetic field and electric field dominant regions. The spatial distribution of plasma sheath parameters is systematically presented. It is found that the evolution of dust surface potential is affected by the magnitude of the magnetic field and collisional models. The stable levitation of dust grains in the sheath region is close to the sheath entrance. Moreover, the total force experienced by an isolated dust grain in the sheath region rapidly increases close to the material surface, and the magnitude of force is higher for larger dust grain.
