Abstract:In this article, a seventh-order variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation is investigated in an optical fiber. By means of the Darboux transformation, soliton and breather solutions are derived and the following results are attained: (i) The one soliton and interactions of two solitons are presented, whose basic structures are parabolic-like, cubic and periodical-oscillating solitons; (ii) The first-order breather and interactions between the two breathers are studied. Several interesting nonlinear wave patterns such as cow-shaped breathers and breathers with periodic properties are displayed; (iii) The dynamic behaviors of solitons and breather waves are affected by the variable coefficients.

Abstract:<p>We revisit the problem of transverse instability of a 2D breather stripe of the sine-Gordon (sG) equation. A numerically computed Floquet spectrum of the stripe is compared to analytical predictions developed by means of multiple-scale perturbation theory showing good agreement in the long-wavelength limit. By means of direct simulations, it is found that the instability leads to a breakup of the quasi-1D breather in a chain of interacting 2D radial breathers that appear to be fairly robust in the dynamics. The stability and dynamics of radial breathers in a finite domain are studied in detail by means of numerical methods. Different families of such solutions are identified. They develop small-amplitude spatially oscillating tails ("nanoptera") through a resonance of higher-order breather's harmonics with linear modes ("phonons") belonging to the continuous spectrum. These results demonstrate the ability of the 2D sG model within our finite domain computations to localize energy in long-lived, self-trapped breathing excitations.</p>

Stability of Breathers for a Periodic Klein-Gordon Equation

Abstract:The existence of breather type solutions, i.e., periodic in time, exponentially localized in space solutions, is a very unusual feature for continuum, nonlinear wave type equations. Following an earlier work [Comm. Math. Phys. {\bf 302}, 815-841 (2011)], establishing a theorem for the existence of such structures, we bring to bear a combination of analysis-inspired numerical tools that permit the construction of such wave forms to a desired numerical accuracy. In addition, this enables us to explore their numerical stability. Our computations show that for the spatially heterogeneous form of the $\phi^4$ model considered herein, the breather solutions are generically found to be unstable. Their instability seems to generically favor the motion of the relevant structures. We expect that these results may inspire further studies towards the identification of stable continuous breathers in spatially-heterogeneous, continuum nonlinear wave equation models.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:Studying the transformation mechanisms of soliton solutions of some high-dimensional equations can aid in comprehending the physical phenomena of the relevant nonlinear wave interactions. Therefore, the transitions and mechanisms of nonlinear waves in the (2+1)-dimensional sine-Gordon and (2+1)-dimensional modified Boussinesq equations are investigated for the first time by means of characteristic line and phase shift analysis, and the dynamic behavior of various nonlinear transformed waves is analyzed. Firstly, we derive the N-soliton solution by applying the Hirota bilinear method, from which the breather solution is constructed by changing the parameters into a complex form in pairs. In addition, via the characteristic-line analysis, we present the mechanism for the transformation of the breather solution, which is composed of the nonlinear superposition of a solitary wave and periodic wave. When the characteristic lines of the two parts are parallel, we find that various transformed nonlinear wave structures can be obtained, such as M-type solitons, oscillating M-type solitons, multi-peak solitons, quasi-sine waves and so on. Finally, we demonstrate that the geometric properties of the characteristic lines vary with time essentially resulting in the time-varying properties of nonlinear waves, which have never been found in (1+1)-dimensional systems. Overall, the study of breath-wave transitions in the (2+1)-dimensional sine-Gordon equation and the modified Boussinesq equation provides valuable insights into the bahavior of nonlinear systems and wave propagation.

Abstract:We study time-periodic and spatially localised solutions (breathers) in general infinite conservative and dissipative nonlinear Klein–Gordon lattices. First, in the time-reversible (conservative) case, we give a concise proof of the existence of breathers not using the concept of the anticontinuous limit. The existence problem is converted into an operator equation for time-reversal initial conditions generating breather solutions. A nontrivial solution of this operator equation is established facilitating Schauder's fixed point theorem. Afterwards, we prove the existence and uniqueness of breather solutions in damped and forced infinite nonlinear Klein–Gordon lattice systems utilising the contraction mapping principle.

Abstract:We consider the discrete p-Schrödinger (DpS) equation, which approximates small amplitude oscillations in chains of oscillators with fully-nonlinear nearest-neighbors interactions of order $$\alpha = p - 1> 1$$. Using a mapping approach, we prove the existence of breather solutions of the DpS equation with even- or odd-parity reflectional symmetries. We derive in addition analytical approximations for the breather profiles and the corresponding intersecting stable and unstable manifolds, valid on a whole range of nonlinearity orders α. In the limit of weak nonlinearity (α → 1+), we introduce a continuum limit connecting the stationary DpS and logarithmic nonlinear Schrödinger equations. In this limit, breathers correspond asymptotically to Gaussian homoclinic solutions. We numerically analyze the stability properties of breather solutions depending on their even- or odd-parity symmetry. A perturbation of an unstable breather generally results in a translational motion (traveling breather) when α is close to unity, whereas pinning becomes predominant for larger values of α.

Abstract:We consider the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with non-local derivatives in a two-dimensional periodic domain. For certain orders of derivatives, we find a new type of breather solution dominating the field evolution at low nonlinearity levels. With the increase of nonlinearity, the breathers break down, giving way to wave turbulence (or Rayleigh-Jeans) spectra. Phase-space trajectories associated with the breather solutions are found to be close to that of the linear system, revealing a connection between the breather solution and Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) theory.

Abstract:The scattering of kinks and low-frequency breathers of the nonlinear sine-Gordon (SG) equation on a spatially localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation (defect) with a balanced gain and loss is investigated numerically. It is demonstrated that if a kink passes the defect, it always restores its initial momentum and energy and the only effect of the interaction with the defect is a phase shift of the kink. A kink approaching the defect from the gain side always passes, while in the opposite case it must have sufficiently large initial momentum to pass through the defect instead of being trapped in the loss region. The kink phase shift and critical velocity are calculated with the use of the collective variable method. Kink-kink (kink-antikink) collisions at the defect are also briefly considered, showing how their pairwise repulsive (respectively, attractive) interaction can modify the collisional outcome of a single kink within the pair with the defect. For the breather, the result of its interaction with the defect strongly depends on the breather parameters (velocity, frequency and initial phase) and on the defect parameters. The breather can gain some energy from the defect and as a result potentially even split into a kink-antikink pair or it can lose a part of its energy. Interestingly, the breather translational mode is very weakly affected by the dissipative perturbation, so that a breather penetrates more easily through the defect when it comes from the lossy side, than a kink. In all studied soliton-defect interactions the energy loss to radiation of small-amplitude extended waves is negligible.

Abstract:In this paper, by the complexification of the wave number of the soliton given by the Hirota bilinear method, we get the breather solutions. Lumps of the BKP equations are constructed by full degeneration of the breathers, i.e., the limit of infinitely large period of the breathers. The localization characters of the 1-order lump by contour line method are studied analytically. The partial degeneration of the breathers yields hybrid solutions including soliton, lump and breathers.

Abstract:A concept of finite-dimensional dynamical system representation is introduced. Since the solution trajectory of partial differential equations are usually represented within infinite-dimensional dynamical systems, the proposed finite-dimensional representation provides decomposed snapshots of time evolution. Here we focus on analyzing the breather solutions of nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations, and such a solution is shown to form a geometrical object within finite-dimensional dynamical systems. In this paper, based on high-precision numerical scheme, we represent the breather solutions of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation as the time evolving trajectory on a finite-dimensional dynamical system. Consequently, with respect to the evolution of finite-dimensional dynamical systems, we confirm that the rotational motion around multiple fixed points plays a role in realizing the breather solutions. Also, such a specific feature of breather solution provides us to understand mathematical mechanism of realizing the coexistence of positive and negative parts in nonlinear systems.

Two-component breather solution of the nonlinear wave equation

Abstract:A nonlinear wave equation that describes different nonlinear effects in various fields of research was considered. In two particular cases, this equation was reduced to the Sine-Gordon equation and the Born-Infeld equation. Using the slowly varying envelope approximation and the generalized perturbative reduction method, the nonlinear wave equation was transformed to coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations for auxiliary functions. An explicit analytical solution of a nonlinear wave equation in the form of a two-breather molecule was obtained. One breather oscillated with the sum, and the other with the difference of frequencies and wave numbers. The obtained solution coincides with the solutions of the two-breather molecule found in a number of well-known equations from different areas of physics. It is shown that in a particular case of the small amplitude waves, a solution in the form of a two-breather molecule for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation coincides with the vector 0\pi pulse of the self-induced transparency which is presented under less stringent conditions compared to the same solution of this equation obtained earlier.

Breather gas fission from elliptic potentials in self-focusing media

Abstract:We present an analytical model of integrable turbulence in the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (fNLS) equation, generated by a one-parameter family of finite-band elliptic potentials in the semiclassical limit. We show that the spectrum of these potentials exhibits a thermodynamic band/gap scaling compatible with that of soliton and breather gases depending on the value of the elliptic parameter m of the potential. We then demonstrate that, upon augmenting the potential by a small random noise (which is inevitably present in real physical systems), the solution of the fNLS equation evolves into a fully randomized, spatially homogeneous breather gas, a phenomenon we call breather gas fission. We show that the statistical properties of the breather gas at large times are determined by the spectral density of states generated by the unperturbed initial potential. We analytically compute the kurtosis of the breather gas as a function of the elliptic parameter m, and we show that it is greater than 2 for all non-zero m, implying non-Gaussian statistics. Finally, we verify the theoretical predictions by comparison with direct numerical simulations of the fNLS equation. These results establish a link between semiclassical limits of integrable systems and the statistical characterization of their soliton and breather gases.

Fate of Boltzmann's breathers: kinetic theory perspective

Abstract:The dynamics of a system composed of elastic hard particles confined by an isotropic harmonic potential are studied. In the low-density limit, the Boltzmann equation provides an excellent description, and the system does not reach equilibrium except for highly specific initial conditions: it generically evolves towards and stays in a breathing mode. This state is periodic in time, with a Gaussian velocity distribution, an oscillating temperature and a density profile that oscillates as well. We characterize this breather in terms of initial conditions, and constants of the motion. For low but finite densities, the analysis requires to take into account the finite size of the particles. Under well-controlle approximations, a closed description is provided, which shows how equilibrium is reached at long times. The (weak) dissipation at work erodes the breather's amplitude, while concomitantly shifting its oscillation frequency. An excellent agreement is found between Molecular Dynamics simulation results and the theoretical predictions for the frequency shift. For the damping time, the agreement is not as accurate as for the frequency and the origin of the discrepancies is discussed.

Abstract:In this work, we study the dynamics of fundamental and double-pole breathers and solitons for the focusing and defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the sextic operator under non-zero boundary conditions. Our analysis mainly focuses on the dynamical properties of simple- and double-pole solutions. Firstly, through verification, we find that solutions with non-zero boundary conditions can be transformed into solutions with zero boundary conditions, whether in simple-pole or double-pole cases. For the focusing case, in the investigation of simple-pole solutions, temporal periodic breather and the spatial-temporal periodic breather are obtained by modulating parameters. Additionally, in the case of multi-pole solitons, we analyze parallel-state solitons, bound-state solitons, and intersecting solitons, providing a brief analysis of their interactions. Under the double-pole case, we observe that the two solitons undergo two interactions, resulting in a distinctive "triangle" crest. Furthermore, for the defocusing case, we briefly consider two situations of simple-pole solutions, obtaining one and two dark solitons.
