Abstract:Consider the generalized Korteweg-de Vries (gKdV) equations with power nonlinearities $q=2,3,4\ldots$ in dimension $N=1$, and the Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) model with integer power nonlinearities $q$ in higher dimensions $N\geq 2$. Among these power-type models, the only conjectured equation with space localized time periodic breathers is the modified KdV (mKdV), corresponding to the case $q=3$ and $N=1$. Quasimonochromatic solutions were introduced by Mandel to show that sine-Gordon is the only scalar field model with breather solutions among this class. In this paper we consider smooth generalized quasimonochromatic solutions of arbitrary size for gKdV and ZK models and provide a rigorous proof that mKdV is the unique power-like model among them with spatially localized breathers of this type. In particular, we show the nonexistence of breathers of this class in the ZK models. The method of proof involves the use of the naturally coherent algebra of Bell's polynomials to obtain particularly distinctive structural elliptic PDEs satisfied by breather-like quasimonochromatic solutions. A reduction of the problem to the classification of solutions of these elliptic PDEs in the entire space is performed, and de Giorgi type uniqueness results are proved in this particular case, concluding the uniqueness of the mKdV breather, and the nonexistence of localized smooth breathers in the ZK case. No assumption on well-posedness is made, and the power of the nonlinearity is arbitrary.

Abstract:In this article, a seventh-order variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation is investigated in an optical fiber. By means of the Darboux transformation, soliton and breather solutions are derived and the following results are attained: (i) The one soliton and interactions of two solitons are presented, whose basic structures are parabolic-like, cubic and periodical-oscillating solitons; (ii) The first-order breather and interactions between the two breathers are studied. Several interesting nonlinear wave patterns such as cow-shaped breathers and breathers with periodic properties are displayed; (iii) The dynamic behaviors of solitons and breather waves are affected by the variable coefficients.

Abstract:In this note, we show that for a large class of nonlinear wave equations with odd nonlinearities, any globally defined odd solution which is small in the energy space decays to 0 in the local energy norm. In particular, this result shows nonexistence of small, odd breathers for some classical nonlinear Klein Gordon equations, such as the sine-Gordon equation and ϕ4$$\phi ^4$$ and ϕ6$$\phi ^6$$ models. It also partially answers a question of Soffer and Weinstein (Invent Math 136(1): 9–74, p 19 1999) about nonexistence of breathers for the cubic NLKG in dimension one.

Two-component breather solution of the nonlinear wave equation

Abstract:A nonlinear wave equation that describes different nonlinear effects in various fields of research was considered. In two particular cases, this equation was reduced to the Sine-Gordon equation and the Born-Infeld equation. Using the slowly varying envelope approximation and the generalized perturbative reduction method, the nonlinear wave equation was transformed to coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations for auxiliary functions. An explicit analytical solution of a nonlinear wave equation in the form of a two-breather molecule was obtained. One breather oscillated with the sum, and the other with the difference of frequencies and wave numbers. The obtained solution coincides with the solutions of the two-breather molecule found in a number of well-known equations from different areas of physics. It is shown that in a particular case of the small amplitude waves, a solution in the form of a two-breather molecule for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation coincides with the vector 0\pi pulse of the self-induced transparency which is presented under less stringent conditions compared to the same solution of this equation obtained earlier.

Stability of Breathers for a Periodic Klein-Gordon Equation

Abstract:The existence of breather type solutions, i.e., periodic in time, exponentially localized in space solutions, is a very unusual feature for continuum, nonlinear wave type equations. Following an earlier work [Comm. Math. Phys. {\bf 302}, 815-841 (2011)], establishing a theorem for the existence of such structures, we bring to bear a combination of analysis-inspired numerical tools that permit the construction of such wave forms to a desired numerical accuracy. In addition, this enables us to explore their numerical stability. Our computations show that for the spatially heterogeneous form of the $\phi^4$ model considered herein, the breather solutions are generically found to be unstable. Their instability seems to generically favor the motion of the relevant structures. We expect that these results may inspire further studies towards the identification of stable continuous breathers in spatially-heterogeneous, continuum nonlinear wave equation models.

Abstract:In this work, a rigorous proof of the nonexistence of breather solutions for NLS equations is presented. By using suitable virial functionals, we are able to characterize the nonexistence of breather solutions, different from standing waves, by only using their inner energy and the power of the corresponding nonlinearity of the equation. We extend this result for several NLS models with different power nonlinearities and even the derivative and logarithmic NLS equations.

Abstract:Families of breathers have been found for certain integrable PDEs but are believed to be rare in non-integrable ones such as nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations. In this paper we consider small breathers for semilinear Klein-Gordon equations with analytic odd nonlinearities. A breather with small amplitude exists only when its temporal frequency is close to be resonant with the linear Klein-Gordon dispersion relation. Our main result is that, for such frequencies, we rigorously identify the leading order term in the exponentially small (with respect to the small amplitude) obstruction to the existence of small breathers in terms of the so-called Stokes constant which depends on the nonlinearity analytically, but is independent of the frequency. As a corollary it proves that, for generic analytic odd nonlinearities, there does not exist any {\it small} breather of {\it any} temporal frequency, even though this had been intuitive for any single given frequency due to the dimension counting. In particular, this gives a rigorous justification of a formal asymptotic argument by Kruskal and Segur \cite{KS87} in the analysis of small breathers. We rely on the spatial dynamics approach where breathers can be seen as homoclinic orbits. The birth of such small homoclinics is analyzed via a singular perturbation setting where a Bogdanov-Takens type bifurcation is coupled to infinitely many rapidly oscillatory directions. The leading order term of the exponentially small splitting between the stable/unstable invariant manifolds is obtained through a careful analysis of the analytic continuation of their parameterizations. This requires the study of another limit equation in the complexified evolution variable, the so-called \emph{inner equation}.

Abstract:We consider the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with non-local derivatives in a two-dimensional periodic domain. For certain orders of derivatives, we find a new type of breather solution dominating the field evolution at low nonlinearity levels. With the increase of nonlinearity, the breathers break down, giving way to wave turbulence (or Rayleigh-Jeans) spectra. Phase-space trajectories associated with the breather solutions are found to be close to that of the linear system, revealing a connection between the breather solution and Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) theory.

Abstract:<p>We revisit the problem of transverse instability of a 2D breather stripe of the sine-Gordon (sG) equation. A numerically computed Floquet spectrum of the stripe is compared to analytical predictions developed by means of multiple-scale perturbation theory showing good agreement in the long-wavelength limit. By means of direct simulations, it is found that the instability leads to a breakup of the quasi-1D breather in a chain of interacting 2D radial breathers that appear to be fairly robust in the dynamics. The stability and dynamics of radial breathers in a finite domain are studied in detail by means of numerical methods. Different families of such solutions are identified. They develop small-amplitude spatially oscillating tails ("nanoptera") through a resonance of higher-order breather's harmonics with linear modes ("phonons") belonging to the continuous spectrum. These results demonstrate the ability of the 2D sG model within our finite domain computations to localize energy in long-lived, self-trapped breathing excitations.</p>

Abstract:We construct infinitely many real-valued, time-periodic breather solutions of power-type nonlinear wave equations. These solutions are obtained from critical points of a dual functional and they are weakly localized in space. Our abstract framework allows to find similar existence results for the Klein-Gordon equation or biharmonic wave equations.

Abstract:We study time-periodic and spatially localised solutions (breathers) in general infinite conservative and dissipative nonlinear Klein–Gordon lattices. First, in the time-reversible (conservative) case, we give a concise proof of the existence of breathers not using the concept of the anticontinuous limit. The existence problem is converted into an operator equation for time-reversal initial conditions generating breather solutions. A nontrivial solution of this operator equation is established facilitating Schauder's fixed point theorem. Afterwards, we prove the existence and uniqueness of breather solutions in damped and forced infinite nonlinear Klein–Gordon lattice systems utilising the contraction mapping principle.

Abstract:Studying the transformation mechanisms of soliton solutions of some high-dimensional equations can aid in comprehending the physical phenomena of the relevant nonlinear wave interactions. Therefore, the transitions and mechanisms of nonlinear waves in the (2+1)-dimensional sine-Gordon and (2+1)-dimensional modified Boussinesq equations are investigated for the first time by means of characteristic line and phase shift analysis, and the dynamic behavior of various nonlinear transformed waves is analyzed. Firstly, we derive the N-soliton solution by applying the Hirota bilinear method, from which the breather solution is constructed by changing the parameters into a complex form in pairs. In addition, via the characteristic-line analysis, we present the mechanism for the transformation of the breather solution, which is composed of the nonlinear superposition of a solitary wave and periodic wave. When the characteristic lines of the two parts are parallel, we find that various transformed nonlinear wave structures can be obtained, such as M-type solitons, oscillating M-type solitons, multi-peak solitons, quasi-sine waves and so on. Finally, we demonstrate that the geometric properties of the characteristic lines vary with time essentially resulting in the time-varying properties of nonlinear waves, which have never been found in (1+1)-dimensional systems. Overall, the study of breath-wave transitions in the (2+1)-dimensional sine-Gordon equation and the modified Boussinesq equation provides valuable insights into the bahavior of nonlinear systems and wave propagation.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a discrete Klein-Gordon (dKG) equation on $\ZZ^d$ in the limit of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (dNLS) equation, for which small-amplitude breathers have precise scaling with respect to the small coupling strength $\eps$. By using the classical Lyapunov-Schmidt method, we show existence and linear stability of the KG breather from existence and linear stability of the corresponding dNLS soliton. Nonlinear stability, for an exponentially long time scale of the order $\mathcal{O}(\exp(\eps^{-1}))$, is also obtained via the normal form technique, together with higher order approximations of the KG breather through perturbations of the corresponding dNLS soliton.

Abstract:In this report, the various 1D single soliton and multi-soliton solutions of the Sine-Gordon equation are explored. First the topological kink solitons and their properties for the Sine-Gordon, as well as the $\phi^{4}$ model are investigated. This includes energy and momentum conservation laws for both models, as well as static kinks and antikinks. The Bogomol'nyi equation and the importance of Lorentz invariance are also discussed. Then in the second half, the focus is on Sine-Gordon multi-kink solutions, which are found by a separation of variables method rather than using inverse scattering or Bäcklund transforms. These kink-kink and kink-antikink collisions are explained by considering topological charges and interaction energies. The special bound state dynamical breather soliton is obtained and properties such as the binding energy of the breather are presented. Following this, the Frenkel-Kontorova model is explored, leading to the discrete Sine-Gordon model and the introduction of discrete breathers.

Existence of traveling breather solutions to cubic nonlinear Maxwell equations in waveguide geometries

Abstract:We consider the full set of Maxwell equations in a slab or cylindrical waveguide with a cubically nonlinear material law for the polarization of the electric field. The nonlinear polarization may be instantaneous or retarded, and we assume it to be confined inside the core of the waveguide. We prove existence of infinitely many spatially localized, real-valued and time-periodic solutions (breathers) propagating inside the waveguide by applying a variational minimization method to the resulting scalar quasilinear elliptic-hyperbolic equation for the profile of the breathers. The temporal period of the breathers has to be carefully chosen depending on the linear properties of the waveguide. As an example, our results apply if a two-layered linear axisymmetric waveguide is enhanced by a third core region with low refractive index where also the nonlinearity is located. In this case we can also connect our existence result with a bifurcation result. We illustrate our results with numerical simulations. Our solutions are polychromatic functions in general, but for some special models of retarded nonlinear material laws, also monochromatic solutions can exist. In this case the numerical simulations raise an interesting open question: are the breather solutions with minimal energy monochromatic or polychromatic?

Breather Solutions of the Discrete p-Schrödinger Equation

Abstract:We consider the discrete p-Schrödinger (DpS) equation, which approximates small amplitude oscillations in chains of oscillators with fully-nonlinear nearest-neighbors interactions of order $$\alpha = p - 1> 1$$. Using a mapping approach, we prove the existence of breather solutions of the DpS equation with even- or odd-parity reflectional symmetries. We derive in addition analytical approximations for the breather profiles and the corresponding intersecting stable and unstable manifolds, valid on a whole range of nonlinearity orders α. In the limit of weak nonlinearity (α → 1+), we introduce a continuum limit connecting the stationary DpS and logarithmic nonlinear Schrödinger equations. In this limit, breathers correspond asymptotically to Gaussian homoclinic solutions. We numerically analyze the stability properties of breather solutions depending on their even- or odd-parity symmetry. A perturbation of an unstable breather generally results in a translational motion (traveling breather) when α is close to unity, whereas pinning becomes predominant for larger values of α.
