Abstract:Objective: To explore the biomechnical and histological characters of solvient-dried and gamma-irradiated tendon allografts. Methods: Thirty Chinese white rabbits were randomly divided into three groups. Achillis tendon transplantation were performed on both sides of the hind legs with solvient-dried and gamma-irradiated (SD-R) allografts, freeze-dried and gamma-irradiated (FD-R) allografts and autografts (AG) respectively. Mechanical and histological examination were made for 4 weeks and 8 weeks after transplantation. Results: Before transplantation, autografts were mechanically about five times stronger than SD-R allografts. Four weeks after transplantation, the difference was no statistical significance. Eight weeks postoperatively, SD-R allografts became stronger than autografts (P < 0.05) and had a strength similar to FD-R allografts (P > 0.05). Conclusion: If care was taken regarding their initial mechanical weakness. SD-R allograft can be used as a favourable alternatives to autografts.
