Abstract:This paper reports experimental results of cyclic behaviours of eight concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) columns after exposure to fire under sustained axial load. The specimens were heated by a stackable electrical furnace and blowing liquefied petroleum gas fire into the furnace simultaneously in order to simulate the real fire attack. The furnace heating can be controlled easily and safely in such a hybrid heating method using gas and electricity that the average temperature in the furnace followed as closely as possible the ISO-834 standard fire curve. After the CFT columns had been axially loaded and heated for a specified duration of time, the specimens were cooled down to room temperature according to the ISO-834 fire standard while the axial load was kept constant. Finally, the columns were subjected to lateral cyclic loading under constant axial load. The sustained pre-load led to significant residual deformations of CFT columns during the cooling phase. Two columns were found to have suffered local buckling of steel tube and three columns have suffered steel weld rupture during the fire exposure. Therefore, it is recommended that more than two vent holes or vent holes with larger diameter should be used in a CFT column and engineers should pay much attention to reasonable selection and construction of steel sections. Compared with the fire-damaged columns without pre-load and that at room temperature, the post-fire ductility and energy absorption capacity of CFT with pre-load had no obvious deterioration and the axial load level had no obvious influence on the residual strength of fire-damaged CFT. The experimental results can provide a basis for fire-damage assessment of CFT columns. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To know about fireproof performances of concrete filled tubes(CFT) of fire‐resistant(FR) steel with circular cross‐section ,the temperature field of CFT of ordinary steel under the fire heating curves was simulated using ANSYS .The fire resistance and load‐bearing capacity of CFT of FR steel were solved with numerical technique under different diameters , slenderness ratio , steel ratio , steel strength , concrete strength ,exposure time ,load eccentricity ratio and load ratio . The simplified calculation formula for predicting the fire resistance time and bearing capacity was deduced , which is found to be in good agreement with numerical results .The calculation formula may be referenced for the fire protection design of practical engineering .Parametric analyses show that the fire resistance time and bearing capacity of CFT of FR steel increase significantly in a certain period of exposure time compared with CFT of ordinary steel . Therefore ,the thickness of fire‐proof coating can be decreased or abolished .
Tests on impact behaviour of concrete-filled steel tube after exposure to high temperatures

Abstract:The impact resistance of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFT) after exposure to high temperatures up to 700°C under axial impact load was experimentally studied by using a spilt Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The stress and strain time history curves of the tested specimens were recorded to analyze the impact behaviour of the fire-damaged CFT The influences of high temperature and impact velocity on the residual impact resistance and axial compressive stiffness of CFT are discussed. The dynamic responses of fire-damaged CFT under impact loading are obviously different from those of CFT under static loading. The test results showed that temperature and impact velocity have remarkable effects on the dynamic strengths of the fire-damaged CFT after exposure to high temperatures. Although the fire-damaged CFT specimens suffered remarkable compression deformations, the CFT columns behaved in a good ductile manner under impact loading. The test results can provide a basis of dynamic assessment of fire-damaged concrete structures.

Abstract:This paper presents a review of the fire behavior and performance of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns. The motivation for the studies on the fire behavior of CFST columns is provided. The effects of many structural parameters on this fire behavior are reviewed and discussed. The equations in the current design codes for predicting the fire resistance capacity and residual axial load carrying capacity are summarized, and comparisons between the experimental results and the predicted results are performed. The discussion results indicate that the fire resistance capacity decreases with the increase in the slenderness ratio, axial load applied, and normal concrete strength, and with the decrease in the cross-sectional dimension and the ratio of reinforcing steel rebar to thickness of fire protection. The Chinese and North American codes provide reasonable prediction of the fire resistance of a CFST column, whereas the Japanese and the modified European codes overestimate the experimental results. Besides, the Chinese code and the Han model predict the residual axial load carrying capacity with better accuracy than the European and Japanese codes. Finally, recommendations for future studies are provided.

Abstract:A mechanics model is developed in this paper for concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) columns subjected to constant axial load and cyclically increasing flexural loading after exposure to ISO-834 standard fire. The predicted cyclic responses for the composite columns are in good agreement with the test results. Based on the theoretical model, parametric analysis was performed on the behaviours of moment (M) versus curvature (phi) response, and lateral load (P) versus lateral displacement (Delta) relationship for the composite columns after exposure to fire. Finally, simplified hysteretic models for the moment (M) versus curvature (phi) response, and the lateral load (P) versus lateral displacement (Delta) relationship were suggested.

The finite element model considers the temperature-dependent material properties and the evolution of material damage under post-fire cyclic loading. The proposed model is validated against existing experimental results. The effects of fire exposure time and loading path on the post-fire cyclic performance of CFDST are discussed based on the numerical results.

Abstract:The temperature fields within twelve concrete filled steel tubular columns with or without fire protection when exposed to the ISO-834 standard fire curve (ISO-834, 1975) have been experimentally investigated and the results are presented in this paper. The main parameters varied in the tests are: (1)Sectional types, square and circular; (2) Sectional dimensions from 299mm to 800mm; (3) Thickness of fire protection coat from 14mm to 35mm. A derivation has been given for the surface temperature of concrete-filled tubular columns. Nonlinear finite element analysis has been carried out to calculate the temperature field for the members with and without fire protection. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data. It has been found that the increasing of tube dimensions results in a temperature reduction in the section. The effect of tube dimensions on temperature reduction is more significant for the core concrete than for the steel surface. Within a three-hour fire time, the reduction in temperature due to the increase in tube dimensions becomes less significant when the outer sectional dimension exceeds about 400 mm. The work in this paper provides a basis for further theoretical study on the fire resistance of concrete filled steel tubular columns.

Abstract:Based on theoretical analysis results,the indexes of the axial compression and flexural bearing capacities of concrete filled steel tube after exposure to fire are discussed.The simplified formulae for the calculation of the post-fire axial compression and bending bearing capacities are provided by regression.The simplified results are in good agreement with test results.The post-fire behaviors and charaterestics of the axial and flexural load versus deformation relations were analysed,and the post-fire simplified models of axial load versus deformation and moment versus curvature are presented.Comparisons of calculated results using simplified method show a good agreement with test results.The simplified method can provide a basis for concrete filled steel tubular structural analysis after exposure to fire.

Abstract:The cross-shaped stiffened concrete-filled steel tubular stub column is constructed by incorporating steel reinforcement ribs into the traditional cross-shaped design, which helps delay the buckling of the steel tube and enhances its restraining effect on the concrete. However, existing standards and research proposed design methods for estimating the post-fire bearing capacity of steel reinforced concrete stub columns are primarily applicable to the ordinary steel tubes with conventional thickness and sections. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the axial compressive properties of high-strength concrete stub columns with irregular thin-walled steel tubes after exposure to fire, which can contribute to their potential future application. Effects of various experimental parameters, such as heating time, width-thickness ratio, and longitudinal spacing of stiffeners were investigated. In total one specimen subjected to ambient temperature and eight cross-shaped stiffened concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns subjected to fire conditions were prepared for measuring temperature-time curves of specimens during ISO-834 standard fire, load-displacement curves, load-transverse, and longitudinal strain curves of specimens under axial compression loading. The failure modes of the specimens were recorded, and the influence of each parameter on the post-fire mechanical properties of the specimens was analyzed based on the experimental results. ABAQUS software was utilized to develop a model for post-fire analysis, which was validated by comparing it with experimental data. After validation, the model was used to analyze the underlying mechanism, and a comprehensive parametric study of members was conducted. Based on the results of the parametric study and the model developed for calculating bearing capacity of the cross-shaped stiffened concrete-filled steel tube stub column at ambient temperature, a simplified equation accounting for the effects of elevated temperature was proposed to predict the residual bearing capacity of the cross-shaped stiffened concrete-filled steel tube stub column after fire exposure. The average error between the simplified formula and the finite element simulation results is 0.925, and the mean square error is 0.085.

Abstract:This paper presents numerical analysis on the seismic performance of concrete-filled double-skin steel tubes (CFDST) after exposure to fire. The finite element model with multiple steps is established with considerations of degradations of material properties due to elevated temperatures and post-fire cyclic loading. The numerical model is verified by test results reported in the companion paper and data available from literature. The numerical model is then used to explore the post-fire seismic performance of CFDST columns, where the temperature field, the internal force and stress distribution are analysed. Parametric studies are also carried out, to discuss the influence of the loading path, the duration of heating, the axial load level, the nominal steel ratio, the hollow ratio of the cross section, etc. It is found that the proposed numerical model is capable to simulate the structural behaviour under difference phases, and the loading path could affect the post-fire seismic performance of CFDST columns.

Abstract:This paper provides new test data of cyclic behavior of repaired concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns after exposure to fire, the fire-damaged CFST columns being strengthened by wrapping the original columns by concrete and a thin-walled steel tube. The test parameters included the cross-section type (circular, square and rectangular), and the axial load level (0, 0.3, 0.6). It was found that all the test specimens behaved in a ductile manner and testing proceeded in a smooth and controlled way. Based on the experiment measurements, the ultimate lateral strength, flexural stiffness, dissipated energy and ductility of the columns are analyzed and compared. The test results indicate that the ultimate lateral strength and flexural stiffness of concrete-filled hollow structural columns decrease after exposure to fire, however, the ductility of the columns was not adversely affected due to the fire exposure. The test results also indicate that the strength and stiffness of the fire-damaged columns can be restored over the original level of the specimens.

Abstract:To solve the problems such as fire resistance design, assessment and repair after fire for centrifuge concrete-filled steel tubular (CCFT) columns, based on analysis on stress-strain relationships of steel and concrete in fire environments and after high temperatures, a finite element model for calculating fire resistance and residual strength of CCFT columns was established. The behaviors of short CCFT columns during the whole period of fire were carried out by considering the fire damage on the strength and displacement of the steel and concrete at every time step. Combined with capacity formula under normal temperature, together with ISO-384 Standard, which contained the standard temperature rise curve, a simplified capacity formula of CCFT on and after fire was put forward. The study concluded that the capacity of CCFT decreased sharply with the increase of fire time and the capacity was almost directly proportional to the temperature distribution.

Abstract:This paper reports an investigation into the behaviour of high strength SCC (self-consolidating concrete) filled steel tubular stub columns exposed to standard fire. A series of tests were carried out to obtain the temperature distribution, axial deformation, limiting temperature of steel and fire endurance of the SCC filled steel tubular stub columns. In addition, a finite element analysis (FEA) model was proposed and used to simulate the fire behaviour of the columns. In the FEA modeling, a sensitivity study was conducted to determine the concrete fracture energy and the contact property of the steel and concrete interface. The verified FEA model was used to analyse the structural behaviour of the columns under fire exposure, such as strain, stress, the load sharing between the steel tube and concrete and local buckling of the steel tube, to gain an insight into the failure mechanism of the columns. Abstract:Concrete filled double skin steel tube (CFDST) is a new type of composite constructional element. Much research has been conducted on its performance in ambient temperature, whereas less attention has paid to the behaviour at elevated temperatures. This paper reports the FE analysis of the temperature distribution in concrete filled double skin tubes exposed to standard fire temperature. The effect of different heat contact conductance models for steel-concrete interfaces in FE model on predicted temperatures was investigated. Finally, temperature distribution in CFDST was discussed through comparing the temperature distribution in some typical concrete filled steel tubes (CFST) and CFDST elements.
Primary studies on strengthening methods of concrete-filled SHS columns after exposure to fire

Abstract:The strength and flexural stiffness of CFST columns will decrease significantly after exposure to fire. In order to ensure its seismic performance, it is necessary to repair the damaged columns. In this paper, the cyclic static test has been carried out for concrete-filled square hollow section (SHS) columns strengthened by concrete-filled steel tubes after exposure to fire. Based on the experiment, the structure performance of columns are compared and analyzed. The test results indicate that strengthening using concrete-filled steel tubes is an extremely effective method and that the strength and flexural stiffness of the repaired columns can be restored to its previous condition.

Abstract:A nonlinear finite element model is used to calculate the load versus deformation relations of steel beam to concrete-filled steel tubular column connections after exposure to standard fire under combined constant axial load and cyclically increasing flexural load. Based on the theoretical model verified by tested results, the influences of the fire duration time, sectional dimension, slenderness ratio, steel ratio, beam-column stiffness ratio, beam-column moment ratio, axial load level on the load versus deformation relation of this type connection after exposure to fire are discussed.

Abstract:Finite element method is applied for the calculations of temperature fields of concrete filled steel tubes under fire. A theoretical model that calculates deformations and strength of beam-column in fire and fire resistance is described in this paper. A comparison of results calculated using this model with the results of tests, there is good agreement. Based on the theoretical model, influence of the changing strength of the materials, sectional dimensions, steel ratio, eccentricity of the load and slenderness ratio on the fire resistance is discussed.

Abstract:This paper encompassed both experimental and theoretical studies into the structural performance of concrete-filled stainless steel tube (CFSST) stub columns with embedded H-shaped steels under axial compression, subsequent to exposure to fire. The main parameter in the fire tests was the duration of fire exposure. The thermal and mechanical models were developed, taking into account the heating and cooling effects. These validated numerical models facilitated the stress and strain analysis, as well as an examination of the load distribution and contact stress before and after fire. The study also explored the influence of critical parameters such as the fire duration, axial load level and confinement factor, etc. It was found that the residual resistance of CFSST column in axial compression decreased with the increase of fire duration and axial load level, yet increased with higher confinement factor and the yield strength of embedded steel. Finally, a simplified equation was proposed for the prediction of resistance in axial compression of such column after fire exposure.
