Abstract:The friction and wear behaviors of two kinds of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites with different pyrocarbon structures were investigated on an MM-1000 test rig at simulating airplane normal landing and rejected take-off (RTO) conditions. The worn surfaces of the specimens were observed with a scanning electron microscope. As a result, the C/C composite with rough laminar (RL) pyrocarbon structure had high friction coefficient and stable brake torque curve at different energy conditions, and on its worn surface a continuous and compact debris layer was formed. Contrary to the above, the brake torque curve of the C/C composite with smooth laminar (SL) pyrocarbon structure showed large fluctuation and small dimension loss, and on its worn surface a rougher debris layer was generated at the normal landing condition. It recorded remarkably reduced friction coefficient, obviously increased oxidation mass loss, large temperature-rise and significantly enhanced oxidation with increasing energy (RTO condition). Since the C/C composite with RL pyrocarbon structure had better friction properties than the one with SL pyrocarbon structure and especially more excellent high energy friction performance, it could be a promising candidate as airplane brake material.
