Abstract:Friction and wear properties of carbon/carbon(C/C) composites with a smooth laminar(SL) pyrolytic carbon texture and a rough laminar(RL) pyrolytic carbon texture at different braking pressures were investigated with a home-made laboratory scale dynamometer. The degree of graphitization and morphologies of worn surfaces were investigated with micro-Raman spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM).The results show that C/C composites with a RL carbon texture have better friction-pressure or temperature properties. As RL carbon is more deformable, which confirmed by Raman spectra,a rather thick friction film can form in worn surfaces of C/C composites with RL carbon at braking pressure of 0.59 MPa and above, resulting in the constant friction coefficient and moderate wear rates at higher braking pressure(1.05~1.82 MPa).While only a thin friction film forms on worn surfaces of that with a SL carbon at braking pressure of 0.82 MPa and above.Furthermore, much matrix carbon suffers oxidation in worn surfaces at higher braking pressures, causing the decline in friction coefficient and the increase in linear wear rates, especially the steep augment in mass loss.
