Abstract:Mesoscale visual observation was conducted to investigate the process of frost formation on both bare copper and hydrophobiccoated surfaces. The surface temperature was set at -10 ℃ in the tests. The tests showed that the frost formation on cold surfaces was not a simple transition process from steam directly to frost, but actually included several steps: formation and growth of water drops, freezing of the drops, formation of initial frost crystals on the frozen drops, and growth of frost crystals accompanied by some crystals falling down. Compared to the bare copper surface, the hydrophobic surface had less water drops, larger drop sizes, later drop freezing, later frost formation, and smaller frost height, all of which support that a hydrophobic surface can retard frost formation and growth.
