Abstract:The concept of cumulative exergy is extended as a unified tool to evaluate the resource content of every component in the process under consideration, including raw materials, energy, products, equipment, wastes, etc. The basic concept of cumulative exergy of every component is introduced. The fundamental principles of cumulative exergy optimization and concerned mathematical models are established for the sake of the natural resource-oriented objective optimization in the process. The application of this approach is demonstrated by a typical example - a heat exchanger optimum design, whose goal is to minimize the annual expenditure of cumulative exergy of natural resources. The optimum design parameter, logarithmic mean heat exchange difference, is obtained. Moreover, the results from cumulative exergy optimization vary only with the improvement of technology and are relatively insensitive to the operational period and location, compared with the ones obtained from the objective function associated with thermoeconomics.
