Abstract:To explore the anti-penetration performance of the specially shaped ceramic/metal composite armor, such an armor is designed and fabricated using a semi-cylindrical projectile resistant ceramic and metal back plate, and its anti-penetration performance for the 12.7 mm armor-piercing incendiary (API) projectile (also known as the 0.50 caliber API projectile) is investigated experimentally and numerically. The results show that due to the significant attitude deflection during projectile penetration, the penetration into the designed ceramic composite armor is quite different from that into the conventional homogeneous ceramic/metal composite armor, which can be roughly divided into the following four stages: asymmetric erosion of the projectile, ceramic cone squeezing movement, back plate failure and projectile exit. The failure mode of the back plate is mainly dishing deformation and petaling failure. When obvious attitude deflection occurs to the projectile, the breaches in the back plate are elliptical in varying degrees, and the height and size of petals are apparently different. The area of the composite armor is divided into different zones according to its anti-penetration performance. The influence of the ratio of semi-cylindrical ceramic diameter to projectile core diameter ξ on the anti-penetration performance is studied under constant areal density. The results show that the deflection effect of the composite armor is small when the ratio ξ is less than 2, and the anti-penetration performance is the strongest when ξ is close to 2. With the increase in the initial velocity of the projectile, the deflection effect of the composite armor on the projectile gradually weakened, and the erosion effect gradually increased.

Abstract:The anti-penetration performance of the composite armor structures, which are composed of steel, Kevlar composite, and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composite, were investigated numerically. The effects of composite armor configurations, the thickness of back plates, the shapes and incident angles of projectile on the anti-penetration performance were analyzed. The results indicate that the configuration with steel, Kevlar and UHMWPE on the first, second and third layers of the composite armor have the better anti-penetration performance. As the thickness of the composites back plate increases, the specific energy absorption of the composite armor decreases while the anti-penetration performance of the composite armor increases. In addition, it can be also found that the ball-headed projectile has stronger penetration ability than the flat-headed projectile of the same weight, and the penetration ability of projectile decreases with the increase in the impact angle of projectile.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to characterizing the specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution of a human body model in a vehicle-based shelter in the presence of high-power intentional electromagnetic pulse (IEMP) radiation using a modified finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The proposed method combines the FDTD(2, 4) method along with dielectric conformal techniques, where the updating equations of FDTD(2, 4) method are modified by introducing an effective dielectric constant and a new conductivity derived by area average of different dielectric regions including coating layer in nine spatial discrete cells. Numerical results show that our method even with coarse meshes has good agreements and efficiency comparing with the traditional FDTD method and CST simulation tool. Furthermore, the proposed method is applied to predict the SAR distribution of human body in a vehicle-based metallic shelter, where the peak SAR and average SAR are captured and compared in the presence of an IEMP with different polarizations and incident angles.
Analysis of Landing Position of Explosively Formed Projectile under the Decoy Jamming of Terminal-Sensitive Projectile

Abstract:Terminal-sensitive projectiles pose a great threat to armored targets in modern battlefields. The active jamming method based on waveform decoy can effectively interfere with millimeter wave radiometer of terminal-sensitive projectile. On the basis of the dynamic process of the terminal-sensitive projectile's falling scanning, a method for calculating the position of the explosively formed projectile of the terminal-sensitive projectile based on the dynamic target is proposed. The jamming signal power received by the terminal sensitive projectile at different falling heights is simulated and calculated. Combined with the threshold power of target recognition and the dynamic compensation relationship, the landing position of the explosively formed projectile of terminal sensitive projectile is obtained, and the influencing factors of the landing position are analyzed. The simulation results provide an important reference for the technical index design of jammer.

Abstract:Along with the continuous development of the intellectualized antitank ammunition and the application of the future electric gun in the battlefield, the armored vehicles encounter an increasingly heavy threat in the battlefield. So the armor protection has to develop new technologies so as to enhance the armored vehicles' survivability in the battlefield. A new concept practical application of the pulsed power technology-active electromagnetic (EM) armor was discussed in this paper. It combined the intellectual fire-control, advanced detector, and precise EM projectile interceptor. It must be the developing direction of the active protection system. A structural and mathematical model of the active EM armor projectile interceptor based on the principle of single stage coil launcher is given in this paper. It analyzes the effects of the electric parameter in the discharge circuits and the structural property of the interceptor to the launching velocity and efficiency of the interceptor. Finally the model is simulated numerically by finite-element analyses.

Abstract:In order to study the damage characteristics of typical tank targets under shock wave load, a full-scale finite element model of tank targets was established by using AUTODYN software. By changing the charge and the position of detonation point, eight simulated working conditions were set up to obtain the damage law of tank armor and internal key components during the process of explosion damage to typical tank targets. The research results show that when the charge explodes on the right side of the tank, the displacement deformation of tank armor occurs at the position corresponding to the explosion center level, and the deformation at the turret joint decreases with the increase of detonation distance. Judging from the impact vibration of the people in the car, all of them are severely damaged, and the impact vibration of the driver is the largest. Because the gunner and the captain are in the turret, the impact vibration is smaller than that of the driver. The fire control computer has great impact vibration response under different working conditions.

Abstract:The problem that the fuze overload signal sticks and is not easily identified by the counting layer during the high-speed intrusion of the projectile is an important factor affecting the explosion of the projectile in the specified layer. A three-pole plate dual-capacitance acceleration sensor based on the capacitive sensor principle is constructed in this paper. The modal simulation of the sensor structure is carried out using COMSOL 6.1 simulation software, the structural parameters of the sensor are derived from the mechanical properties of the model, and finally the physical sensor is processed and fabricated using the derived structural parameters. The mechanical impact characteristics of the model under different overloads were investigated using ANSYS/LS-DYNA, and the numerical simulation of the projectile intrusion into the three-layer concrete slab was carried out using LS-DYNA. Under different overload conditions, the sensor was tested using the Machette's hammer test and the output signal of the sensor was obtained. The output signal was analyzed. Finally, a sensor with self-powered output, high output voltage amplitude, and low spurious interference was obtained. The results show that the ceramic capacitive sensor has a reasonable structure, can reliably receive vibration signals, and has certain engineering applications in the intrusion meter layer.

Abstract:In order to establish a connection between the ballistic performance and mechanical properties of armor steel, a ballistic simulation model was developed and subsequently validated for accuracy and reliability. The mechanical properties of the target plate were described using the Johnson–Cook constitutive relation. An analysis was conducted to investigate the impact of the J–C parameters of the target plate on its ballistic performance, revealing a strong linear relationship between them. Subsequently, a mathematical model represented as H = 14.82 − 0.0048A − 0.0023B + 5.95n − 81.3C was derived, and its accuracy was demonstrated to exceed 90%. This mathematical model can effectively predict the ballistic performance of the armor steel, even when its mechanical properties undergo variations during the production process. This prediction capability significantly contributes to reducing research costs and time.

Abstract:Charge temperature is one of the main tactical and technical indices for a large caliber self-propelled gun, and is a critical firing datum affecting the projectile muzzle velocity and gun firing accuracy. In this paper, on the basis of analyzing the heat transfer character of propellant, an unsteady-state heat conduction model describing the variation of the charge temperature is built and the finite-difference implicit schemes are theoretically deduced using the volume equilibrium method for numerical simulation. Comparing simulation curves with experiment results indicates that the physical models used reflect the real-time change process of the charge temperature with the environment temperature. A noncontact automatic online charge temperature measurement unit is developed. This unit can accurately measure the temperature field and real-time average temperature of the charge for all charge zones placed in a combat vehicle and simultaneously transfer the temperature information to the gunner task terminal computer through a controller area network (CAN) bus interface for trajectory calculation and firing data correction, ensuring the weapon system meets the requirements of digitalization and informatization.

Abstract:<p>The protective layer of chemical storage tank has a significant effect in risk mitigation of projectile-related accidents but the research is still in infancy. In order to investigate the performance of protective layer against projectile, dynamic response process of the large-scale vertical storage tank impacted by the end-cap fragment is simulated based on the LS-DYNA. In this paper, some key factors (thickness, layering order and number of layers) affecting its performance are discussed, which can be characterized by the deformation degrees of the target tank. It is found that the anti-penetration performance is improved rapidly with the increase of thickness, and aluminum (Al) protective layer shows a higher sensitivity to thickness change compared to Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) protective layer. Three double-layered protective layers for different sequences are investigated and the Al-UHMWPE protective layer shows best performance. For the Al protective layers arranged in various combinations of equivalent total thickness, better performance is provided by monolithic structures than layered one. This study demonstrated the rational design of the protective layer around chemical storage tanks in material selection and structure configuration.</p>

Abstract:This study employs verified material parameters and models to construct a structure featuring triangular silicon carbide ceramic rods embedded within thinly corrugated titanium alloy frames, analyzing its dynamic response and energy dissipation when countering the hard core of 12.7 mm armor-piercing incendiary rounds. Initially, relevant numerical models were established, and simulations of various conditions confirmed the model's effectiveness. Compared to traditional ceramic composite armor of equal areal density, this structure demonstrated certain enhancements in energy aspects. Due to the structural effects of the titanium alloy frame, the projectile experienced uneven resistance, leading to its rotation around a curvature center and creating a significant velocity gradient, resulting in substantial angular deflection of the projectile. The introduction of the corrugated titanium alloy frame effectively redistributed the internal energy dissipation mechanism of the armor, achieving a more balanced energy absorption between the ceramics and the titanium alloy frame, reducing ceramic damage, and enhancing the armor's resistance to multiple impacts. Moreover, the thicker backing support provided greater support to the ceramics, an essential component for ceramic composite armor. In impact tests at different speeds, the structure displayed a linearly increasing energy absorption capability with increasing speed, but the final deflection angle decreased as penetration speed increased, indicating that the structure is more suitable for resisting mid to low-velocity projectiles.

Abstract:Abstract In order to study the penetration ability of fragment simulation projectile(FSP) to armored steel target, and to detect the protection ability of target plates with different thicknesses. Combined with numerical simulation and experiment, the penetration process of FSP on armored steel target plates with different thickness ratios is studied. The design and implementation preparations were made for the damage of the steel target plate by the fragments, and the relevant data were obtained and analyzed. The analysis results show that the finite element analysis and the experimental study are in good agreement, and the ballistic limit of armored steel targets with different thicknesses and the calculation formula of the residual velocity of the FSP are obtained. The research results provide the basis and support for the evaluation, design and improvement of armored vehicle protection capability.
Research on Proximity Fuze Starting Strategy Based on Angle Measured by Anti-radiation Missile Seeker

Abstract:To improve the proximity fuze anti-jamming capacity of anti-radiation missile(ARM),a method was put forward,which chose the proximity fuze starting with the use of angular information measured by passive radar seeker.On the terminal trajectory,the statistic relationship between angular measurement information from the seeker and the missile-target distance was analyzed.The criterion of starting the proximity fuze was set up by judging whether ARM could hit or miss the radar target antenna.Based on the assumption of seeker angular measurement error obeying uniformity distribution,and with the principles of start before the latest position and start as late as possible,the upper and lower limits of missile-target distance PDF(Probability Distribution Function) were discussed respectively when the proximity fuze started to work.Aiming at the typical parameters of ARM and target,a simulation was carried out.The results show that the method can ensure the proximity fuze starting at proper on the terminal trajectory,and the proximity fuze anti-jamming capability is improved effectively.

Abstract:The three-dimensional finite-element method (3-D FEM) model of the passive electromagnetic (EM) armor is established. The passive EM armor is analyzed with 3-D magnetostatic field. The magnetic field and ampere force distribution on various cross sections and the total force acting on the projectile are given. The force calculated by 3-D FEM is almost the same as that obtained by analytical method. The dynamic principle of the projectile is analyzed.

Abstract:With the wide application of lightweight armor composite, it is of great significance to monitor delamination damage in laminated materials. Ultrasonic testing often needs to be immersed in liquid for monitoring, which is inconvenient for large-size specimens and cannot be monitored in real time. In structural health monitoring, the corresponding relationship between damage and response signal characteristics (such as amplitude and energy) is established, which is greatly affected by various environmental factors (such as temperature and load). Due to the particularity of the multi-layer composite structure with large thickness, the problem of Lamb wave multi-mode and frequency dispersion affects the accuracy of damage monitoring, which brings great difficulty to the accuracy of damage monitoring. Four piezoelectric sensors were arranged on the surface of the 5 mm sandwich armor composite composed of alumina ceramic, T700 carbon fiber and TC4 titanium alloy. The signal-to-noise ratio of the obtained damage scattering signal was improved by time reversal method and Gabor wavelet transform. Monitoring and imaging of single damage and multiple damage on the reverse side of armor composite were studied. The experimental results show that the radial error of single damage location is 4.24 mm, and the radial error of multiple damage location is 5.39 mm.
Target Vulnerability Analysis and Damage Assessment of Main Battle Tank

Abstract:Aiming to key problems of target vulnerability analysis simulation,according to decrease of measures of performance,functional sub-system damage trees were constructed. Through analyzing terminal damage mechanisms of typical anti-tank ammunition to the target,damage models were established. On the VC++ platform,it developed main-battle tank vulnerability analysis and damage assessment simulation system. Taking armour-piercing ammunition as example,the main battle tank damage assessment was done using above system. Research results are significant to main-battle-tank's defense structure design,anti-tank ammunition design and power increase.

Abstract:It is very important for the naval architect to estimate the explosion location of the semi-armor-piercing missile warhead when designing a warship. A simple and efficient thin plate petalling model was developed based on the characteristic of the kinetic armor-piercing effect of semi-armor-piercing missile warhead. The analysis was executed by means of an energy balance for a rigid-plastic strain rate sensitive material. An excellent correlation was found between the theoretical prediction for the terminal velocity of a projectile striking the target plate and the test results.

Abstract:A useful method for calculating RCS of complex objects is given. First, it models the armored car with triangular element by using 3D Studio Max. Radar scattering character is calculated with Ludwig's integration and the physics theory of diffraction. The method is effective validated by calculating RCS of the cuboids. The radar cross section of armored cars and tanks is presented, which is important in studying scattering characters of the targets.

Abstract:Penetration mechanics is important both as a science and in practice of military engineering.For a quasi-steady penetration of long rod projectile into semi-infinite thick target,a simplified model is developed, where the bullet incorporated mushroom head consists of unbroken zone,crush zone and hole dilating zone, and the target consists of hole dilating zone,crush zone and unbroken zone,with the strain rate effect being considered.A set of ODE is obtained through conservation laws of every part.Through theoretical analysis and calculation,the influences of the crush strain rate,crash strength of the projectile and the strain rate effect of the crash strength of the target on penetration depth are analyzed.The excellent agreement of the calculation results and the experiment shows the effectiveness of the simplified model.
