Abstract:
The protective layer of chemical storage tank has a significant effect in risk mitigation of projectile-related accidents but the research is still in infancy. In order to investigate the performance of protective layer against projectile, dynamic response process of the large-scale vertical storage tank impacted by the end-cap fragment is simulated based on the LS-DYNA. In this paper, some key factors (thickness, layering order and number of layers) affecting its performance are discussed, which can be characterized by the deformation degrees of the target tank. It is found that the anti-penetration performance is improved rapidly with the increase of thickness, and aluminum (Al) protective layer shows a higher sensitivity to thickness change compared to Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) protective layer. Three double-layered protective layers for different sequences are investigated and the Al-UHMWPE protective layer shows best performance. For the Al protective layers arranged in various combinations of equivalent total thickness, better performance is provided by monolithic structures than layered one. This study demonstrated the rational design of the protective layer around chemical storage tanks in material selection and structure configuration.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve The paper primarily explores the performance of protective layers on large chemical storage tanks in preventing shrapnel impacts. Specifically, the study aims to evaluate the impact of different materials, thicknesses, and layers of protective layers on the penetration resistance of storage tanks through numerical simulation methods (based on LS-DYNA software). The main issues the paper attempts to address are as follows: 1. **Optimization of Protective Layer Design**: - How do protective layers made of different materials (aluminum and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene UHMWPE) affect the penetration resistance of storage tanks? - How do the thickness, number of layers, and arrangement order of the protective layers influence their protective effectiveness? 2. **Numerical Simulation Verification**: - Establishing a detailed finite element model to simulate the actual shrapnel impact process and verify the effectiveness of protective layers under different configurations. 3. **Comparison with Experimental Data**: - Comparing the numerical simulation results with existing experimental data to validate the model's effectiveness. Through these studies, the paper aims to provide theoretical basis and technical support for the design of protective layers for chemical storage tanks, thereby reducing the risk of accidents caused by shrapnel impacts.
