Abstract:For the Cauchy problem of 1-D first order quasilinear hyperbolic linearly degenerate systems, a new mechanism of singularity formation is given to show that all the W-1,W-p (1 < p <= +infinity) norms of the C-1 solution should blow up simultaneously. It gives a way to verify the property of ODE singularity by directly using the energy method in the framework of C-1 solution. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with characteristics with constant multiplicity. Suppose that characteristics with constant multiplicity(>1) are linearly degenerate only at u = 0, if there is a genuinely nonlinear simple characteristic which does not have certain "monotonicity" and the initial data possess some decaying properties, we obtain the blow-up result for the C-1 solution to the Cauchy problem.

Abstract:One often believes that there is no shock formation for the Cauchy problem of quasilinear hyperbolic systems (of conservation laws) with linearly degenerate characteristic fields; It has been a conjecture for a long time (see Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 2004; 172:65-91; Compressible Fluid Flow and Systems of Conservation Laws in Several Space Variables. Springer: New York, 1984) and it is still an open problem in the general situation up to now. In this paper, a framework to justify this conjecture is proposed, and, by means of the concept such as the strict block hyperbolicity, the part richness and the successively block-closed system, some general kinds of quasilinear hyperbolic systems, which verify the conjecture, are given. Abstract:In this paper we investigate the formation and propagation of singularities for the system for one-dimensional Chaplygin gas. In particular, under suitable assumptions we construct a physical solution with a new type of singularities called "Delta-like" solution for this kind of quasilinear hyperbolic system with linearly degenerate characteristics. By careful analysis, we study the behavior of the solution in a neighborhood of a blowup point. The formation of this new kind of singularities is due to the envelope of the different families of characteristics instead of the same family of characteristics in the traditional situation. This shows that the blowup phenomenon of solution for the system with linearly degenerate characteristics is quite different from the situation of shock formation for the system with genuinely nonlinear characteristics. Different initial data can lead to kinds of different Delta-like singularities: the Delta-like singularity with point-shape and Delta-like singularity with line-shape.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the C0 boundedness of solution implies the global existence and uniqueness of C1 solution to the mixed initial-boundary value problem for linearly degenerate, reducible quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions and we show by an example that the C0 norm of solution may blow up in a finite time. This gives the mechanism of the formation of singularities caused by the interaction of boundary conditions with nonlinear hyperbolic waves. The same result is still valid for the quasilinear hyperbolic system of rich type.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the mixed initial-boundary value problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions in a half-unbounded domain {(t, x)\ t greater than or equal to 0, x greater than or equal to 0}. Under the assumption that, the positive eigenvalues are weakly linearly degenerate, we obtain the global existence and uniqueness of C-1 solution with small and decaying initial data. Some applications are given for the system of the planar motion of an elastic string.

Abstract:This article concerns the formation of finite-time singularities in solutions to quasilinear hyperbolic systems with small initial data. We propose a universal test function method that works for many nonlinear hyperbolic systems arising from physical applications. We first present a simpler proof of the main result in the work of Sideris [Commun. Math. Phys. 101(4), 475–485 (1985)]: the global classical solution is non-existent for compressible Euler equations even for some small initial data. Then, we apply this approach to nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics in two space dimensions. Finally, we consider second order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with quadratic nonlinearity arising from elastodynamics of isotropic hyperelastic materials by ignoring the cubic and higher order terms. Under some restriction on the coefficients of the nonlinear terms that imply genuine nonlinearity, we show that the classical solutions to these equations can still blow up in finite time even if the initial data are small enough.

Abstract:This paper concerns the hyperbolic mean curvature flow (HMCF) for plane curves. A quasilinear wave equation is derived and studied for the motion of plane curves under the HMCF. Based on this, we investigate the formation of singularities in the motion of these curves. In particular, we prove that the motion under the HMCF of periodic plane curves with small variation on one period and small initial velocity in general blows up and singularities develop in finite time. Some blowup results have been obtained and the estimates on the life-span of the solutions are given.

Abstract:Consider a quasi-linear system of two Klein–Gordon equations with masses m1, m2. We prove that when m1≠2m2 and m2≠2m1, such a system has global solutions for small, smooth, compactly supported Cauchy data. This extends a result proved by Sunagawa (J. Differential Equations 192 (2) (2003) 308) in the semi-linear case. Moreover, we show that global existence holds true also when m1=2m2 and a convenient null condition is satisfied by the nonlinearities.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the global existence and the asymptotic behavior of classical solution of the Cauchy problem for quasilinear hyperbolic system with constant multiple and linearly degenerate characteristic fields. We prove that the global C1 solution exists uniquely if the BV norm of the initial data is sufficiently small. Based on the existence result on the global classical solution, we show that, when the time t tends to the infinity, the solution approaches a combination of C1 traveling wave solutions. Finally, we give an application to the equation for time-like extremal surfaces in the Minkowski space–time R1+n.
