Abstract:In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with characteristics with constant multiplicity. Suppose that characteristics with constant multiplicity(>1) are linearly degenerate only at u = 0, if there is a genuinely nonlinear simple characteristic which does not have certain "monotonicity" and the initial data possess some decaying properties, we obtain the blow-up result for the C-1 solution to the Cauchy problem.

Abstract:This paper deals with the blow-up phenomenon, particularly, the geometric blow-up mechanism, of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems in the critical case. We prove that it is still the envelope of the same family of characteristics which yields the blowup of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem in the critical case.

Abstract:For the Cauchy problem of system (2.1.1) with the initial data where φ(x) is a C 1 vector function with bounded C 1 norm, in Chapter 3 we proved that if system (2.1.1) is a strictly hyperbolic system or a hyperbolic system with characteristics with constant multiplicity, then if the initial data φ(x) satisfy the following small and decaying property: where μ > 0 is a constant, then the Cauchy problem (2.1.1) and (5.1.1) admits a unique global C 1 solution u = u(t, x) with a small C 1 norm for all t є R if and only if system (2.1.1) is weakly linearly degenerate (WLD), i.e., all the characteristics are WLD.

Abstract:One often believes that there is no shock formation for the Cauchy problem of quasilinear hyperbolic systems (of conservation laws) with linearly degenerate characteristic fields; It has been a conjecture for a long time (see Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 2004; 172:65-91; Compressible Fluid Flow and Systems of Conservation Laws in Several Space Variables. Springer: New York, 1984) and it is still an open problem in the general situation up to now. In this paper, a framework to justify this conjecture is proposed, and, by means of the concept such as the strict block hyperbolicity, the part richness and the successively block-closed system, some general kinds of quasilinear hyperbolic systems, which verify the conjecture, are given. Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the C0 boundedness of solution implies the global existence and uniqueness of C1 solution to the mixed initial-boundary value problem for linearly degenerate, reducible quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions and we show by an example that the C0 norm of solution may blow up in a finite time. This gives the mechanism of the formation of singularities caused by the interaction of boundary conditions with nonlinear hyperbolic waves. The same result is still valid for the quasilinear hyperbolic system of rich type.

Abstract:We study the Cauchy problems for the isentropic 2-d Euler system with discontinuous initial data along a smooth curve. All three singularities are present in the solution: shock wave, rarefaction wave and contact discontinuity. We show that the usual restrictive high order compatibility conditions for the initial data are automatically satisfied. The local existence of piecewise smooth solution containing all three waves is established.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the global existence and the asymptotic behavior of classical solution of the Cauchy problem for quasilinear hyperbolic system with constant multiple and linearly degenerate characteristic fields. We prove that the global C1 solution exists uniquely if the BV norm of the initial data is sufficiently small. Based on the existence result on the global classical solution, we show that, when the time t tends to the infinity, the solution approaches a combination of C1 traveling wave solutions. Finally, we give an application to the equation for time-like extremal surfaces in the Minkowski space–time R1+n.
