Abstract:This paper elucidates the basic concept of crack and pore defect, and summarizes the different kinds of classification according to geometry and existent condition of defects based on the aspect ratio of defect, and then, by employing a numerical method, emphatically presents the influence of flaw and pore defect on the failure of brittle medium, and the effect of defect scale on the stress and strength of specimen. The results show that: (1) experimental scale mostly is at microscopic level and a relative conception involving the size of macroscopic object investigated. (2) at the same scale level, increasing of defect size leads to the decrease of the peak strength of specimen decrease. (3) initiation and propagation of crack influences the deformation during the failure progress by stress interaction around defects and failure mode of specimen. (4) in an experimental or numerical test about the mechanism of crack propagation and coalescence, the specimen with the ratio λ 1, namely, that of length of flaw defect to width of specimen, equal to 0.2 can contribute a good result.
