Abstract:Multilayer nanocomposite films composed of negative charged Ag nanosized particles and cationic polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) molecules were fabricated on polymer modified single-crystal silicon and flat glass slides by a layer-by-layer (LBL) molecular self-assembly technique. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the formed Ag particles successfully absorbed onto the positively charged surfaces. The atomic force microscopy image of a two-cycle Ag/PAH bilayer film showed that no surface damage or defects existed on the thin-films surface. The Ag particles were densely and homogeneously distributed on the surface and relatively uniform in size. Goniometry was employed to verify the assembly process and the water contact angles oscillated regularly, depending on the composition of the outermost layer. By using the LBL deposition technique, a molecular-level ordered multilayer film with the thickness up to 40 layers (20 bilayers) was obtained. Results from UV–vis spectroscopy and ellipsometry measurements revealed that the self-assembly of the Ag/PAH multilayer film was well quantitative and reproducible. Thus we can conclude that the consecutive LBL deposition technique is a feasible and effective way to produce multilayer film and control the surface properties.

Abstract:Electrostatic self-assembled films of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and diazoresin (DAR) were fabricated on substrates. Under irradiation, photoreaction occurring between adjacent layers was confirmed by UV-Vis and Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectra, which covalently attached DNA to DAR in the multilayer. The stability of the multilayer was greatly improved, which was confirmed by etching in NaCl solution and monitored by UV-Vis and scanning force microscopy (SFM).

Abstract:The star-shaped C-60-(styrene)-(sodium p-styrenesulfonate) copolymer [C-60-poly (St-SS)] was synthesized successfully. The layer-by-layer self-assembly films from - [C-60-poly (St-SS)]/diazoresin were fabricated on mica by ionic attractive force. The crosslinking structure formed from the conversion of ionic bond to covalent bond after UV irradiation. The roughness and microtribological property of these films were investigated by AFM/FFM, which provided insights into the prediction of load-bearing ability on C-60-containing films. It was found that the microtribological properties are tightly related with the soft chain length and the layer number of the films.

Abstract:A novel method for speedy fabrication of free-standing layer-by-layer (LbL) multilayer films in salt free media, and without the need for a sacrificial sublayer is described by using two different polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) nanoparticles as LbL self-assembly building blocks. Negatively charged polyelectrolyte complex particles (PEC-) consisting of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (PDDA/CMCNa), and positively charged polyelectrolyte complex particles (PEC+) consisting of PDDA/poly(sodium-p-styrenesulfonate) (PDDA/PSSNa) were prepared and characterized by FT-IR, zeta-potential (zeta potential) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The LbL self-assembly of PEC+/PEC- and PDDA/PEC- was followed by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), optical transmittance, UVvis absorption spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). QCM results show that the thickness growth rate of the PEC+/PEC- pair is 9 times faster than that of the PDDA/PEC- pair and this result is also supported by optical transmittance and UVvis absorption. A robust free-standing multilayer film of (PEC+/PEC-) 25 can be easily peeled off from the substrate after being cross-linked in 3.5 wt% glutaraldehyde (GA) (80 degrees C, 50mins). Field emission electron scanning microscopy (FESEM) indicates that both the surface and cross-section of the multilayer film display layered structures. Furthermore, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) can also be uniformly incorporated into the free- standing LbL multilayer film by pre-incorporating MWCNTs into PECparticles. The experimental results show that using oppositely charged PEC particles as LbL assembly components is a speedy and convenient method to fabricate free- standing LbL multilayer films either with or without nanofillers.

Abstract:A simple approach for preparing a thin film containing C60 derivative (C60-COOH) nanodomains, based on the mixed Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) film of C60-COOH and diacetylene acid (DA), is reported. From the observations of atomic force microscopy, it is found that many small domains in the mixed LB film are formed, which differ from the flat film of pure C60-COOH. Upon the photopolymerization of DA molecules in the mixed LB film, these nanodomains become much smaller and more homogeneous in size and distribution.

Abstract:Thin films of alternating DNA and rare earth ion Eu3+ layers from dilute aqueous solutions were fabricated onto quartz substrates and silicon wafers through the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique. UV-visible spectroscopy shows that a uniform layer of DNA can be fully adsorbed onto each alternate Eu3+ layer. Microscopic FTIR spectra show Eu3+ interacts with both the phosphate groups and nitrogenous bases of DNA, and the formation of {DNA/Eu}(n) films induces a change of the conformation of the DNA secondary structure to a certain extent. Various parameters affecting the DNA or Eu3+ loading into the composite film were investigated with emphasis on the effect of the pH and ionic strength of the DNA solution used for the film preparation. Atomic force microscopy was utilized to observe the morphologies of the DNA in the films obtained at two different pH values. Small molecules, such as alpha-tenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA), Hoechst 33258 (Hoe), and ethidium bromide (EB), are all observed to interact with Eu3+ or DNA in the {DNA/Eu}(n) films. The {DNA/Eu}(n) films incorporated with these molecules show different fluorescent characteristics, and the fluorescence intensity of the films versus the bilayer number has a good linear relationship, confirming the potential for creating a different luminescence ability of the multilayer by controlling the number of DNA/Eu bilayers.

Abstract:This paper presents a summary of the efforts in fabricating stable layer-by-layer self-assemblies, which are achieved through combination of ionic self-assembly and post chemical reaction. We concentrate on multilayer fabrication using a photoreactive diazo resin (DAR) as the polycation to alternately assemble with species containing sulfonate or carboxylic groups in their backbone, and the post photoreaction that changes the electrostatic interaction at the interfaces into covalent bonds. As been shown, the stability of thus assembled multilayers is increased dramatically.

Abstract:A water-soluble fullerene, C60-N,N-dimethylpyrrolidinium iodide, was dispersed in aqueous media in the form of vesicles. By mixing and incubating the fullerene vesicle and a 2D DNA lattice bearing a phosphate-labeled protruded strand together, pearl-like arrays of fullerene domains can be obtained on the DNA template.

Abstract:Using the self-assembly technique, we have fabricated a novel, ternary-component ultra-thin film based on rigid C-60 molecules and soft poly(acrylic acid) chains through electrostatic attractions with diazoresin. Under UV irradiation, the film is linked by covalent bonds, following the decomposition of diazonium, and shows good stability, contrasting with ionic bond linkages. Using AFM/FFM, the microtribological properties of the ternary film were investigated. Because of the inclusion of rigid molecules and soft polymer chains having a covalent linkage, the film shows not only good load-bearing, but also low friction, properties.

Abstract:The layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly of poly-l-lysine (PLL) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was used to construct the enzymatic biodegradable multilayered films. The LbL build up of DNA multilayers was monitored by UV–vis spectrometry, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM, UV–vis spectrometry and fluorescence spectrometry measurements indicated that 90% of DNA within the films was released almost linearly under 5UmL–1 α–chymotrypsin in PBS at 37°C in 35h. TEM and zeta potential experiments revealed that the released DNA molecules were condensed into the slight positive complexes with size from 20 to several hundred nanometers. The well-structured, easy processed enzymatic biodegradable multilayered film may have great potential for gene applications in tissue engineering, medical implants, etc.

Abstract:A novel self-assembly ultrathin film was fabricated using a C-60 carboxylic acid derivative and diazoresin through electrostatic interaction on different substrates. Following UV irradiation and the decomposition of the diazonium group, the bond nature of the film converted from ionic into covalent and the film got to be very stable. The microtribologic properties of the C-60-containing film were investigated using atomic force microscopy/friction force microscopy devices, and the result showed that rigid C-60 molecular in the film have load-bearing capacity. To increase the lubricative property of the film, a soft poly(acrylic acid) chain was incorporated into the film to form a ternary composite film and the polymer-bound C-60 film showed not only good load-bearing but also low friction properties.

Abstract:The self-assembly and disintegration behavior of polyzwitterion, poly(4-vinylpyridiniomethanecarboxylate) (PVPMC), and negatively charged polyelectrolyte, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), layer-by-layer (LbL) multilayer films were investigated in detail by using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results indicated that the PVPMC/PAA multilayer films grew linearly with increasing bilayer number. The disintegration rate of PVPMC/PAA multilayers could be well controlled by varying the concentration of salt in aqueous solution. It was found that PVPMC/PAA multilayer films could be completely disintegrated in 0.9% normal saline solution within 15 min. Such controllable disintegration behavior rendered the PVPMC/PAA multilayer as an excellent sacrificial sublayer for fabricating freestanding LbL multilayer films. Free-standing multilayer films were then successfully fabricated by LbL self-assembly of positively charged polyelectrolyte complex (PEC), made from poly(diallyldimethylammonium) (PDDA) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), and negatively charged PSS with PVPMC/PAA as a sacrificial sublayer, which was disintegrated in 0.9% normal saline solution. The obtained free-standing films had good mechanical properties with 24.1 MPa tensile strength at break and 0.56 GPa Young's modulus.

Abstract:A kind of multilayer ultra-thin films was fabricated from diazoresin and water-soluble fullerene derivative C-60(ONa)(n). Under irradiation of UV light, following the decomposition of N-2(+) group of diazoresin, the bond nature between the layers of the film will convert from ionic to covalent. As a result the irradiated film possesses high stability towards polar solvents.

Abstract:Multilayer ultrathin films composed of nitro-containing diazoresin (NDR) as polycation and poly(amidoamine) dendrimers with carboxyl terminal groups (PAMAMC) (G = 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5) as polyanion were fabricated on mica by electrostatic layer-by-layer deposition. Subsequent UV irradiation converted the interlayer linkage from ionic to covalent. The films were characterized with UV-vis, FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that the uniform multilayer films were formed. All the films with dendrimers of various generations as building blocks have a very smooth surface with a mean roughness of about 0.8-1.1 nm. The thickness of the PAMAMC-NDR bilayer in the films increases with the generation number of the dendrimer, but the average thickness of the dendrimer monolayer is smaller than the diameter of the ideal spherical model of dendrimers with an extended conformation of all branches. They are significantly compressed in multilayer films. The conversion of the ionic to covalent linkage dramatically improved the stability of the films with respect to polar solvent, strong electrolyte, and surfactant solutions.

Abstract:Through electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, negatively charged calf thymus double stranded DNA (CTds-DNA), and positively charged Zr4+ ions were alternately deposited on gold substrate modified with chemisorbed cysteamine. Thus-prepared three-dimensional DNA networks were characterized by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared reflection–absorption spectroscopy (IR-RAS). SPR spectroscopy indicates that the effective thickness of DNA monolayer in the (DNA/Zr4+)1 bilayer was 1.5±0.1nm, which corresponds to the surface coverage of 79% of its full packed monolayer. At the same time, a linear increase of film thickness with increasing number of layers was also confirmed by SPR characterizations. The data of XPS and IR-RAS show that Zr4+ ions interact with both the phosphate groups and nitrogenous bases of DNA and load into the framework of DNA. Furthermore, the interactions between this composite film and heme protein cytochrome c (Cyt c) were investigated by SPR spectroscopy and electrochemistry. Compared with the adsorption of Cyt c on DNA monolayer, this composite multilayer film can obviously enhance the amount of immobilized Cyt c confirmed by SPR reflectivity-incident angle (R-θ) curves. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) indicates the Cyt c adsorbed on the composite film is electroactive, and the enhancement of peak current in CV indirectly verifies the increase of the amount of immobilized Cyt c.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the DNA anchoring technique on gold substrates and the DNA stretching method by molecular combing. The stretched DNA molecules were visualized by the fluorescent microscope. The stretched DNA was also evidenced by the silver reduction along DNA backbones with hydroquinone in both alkaline and acidic conditions. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that the unstretched DNA molecules result in random silver coils, whereas the stretched DNA molecules give the straight silver wires of more than 10 mu m long. The molecular combing technique was successfully demonstrated in bridging single DNA molecule over the gold microelectrodes, which is observed by the fluorescent microscope. The DNA anchoring on the gold surface was enhanced by the aminoethanethiol modification and by oligonucleotide hybridization. The aminoethanethiol modification of the electrode surface was analyzed by a Physical Electronics PHI 7200 ToF-SIMS Spectrometer and a reflectron ToF analyzer. A more sophisticated DNA 1-D structure was also achieved by the DNA self-assembly and visualized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) with the negative staining. These achievements suggest a useful approach of converting biological macromolecules to potential applications in micro electronic industry.
