Abstract:High voltage vacuum interrupter (HVVI) has longer separation and needs faster opening and closing speed. Because air gap's magnetic resistance is proportional to air gap's length, it is very difficult for the actuator to acquire enough drive force under longer separation. As a result, HVVI has been hardly equipped by permanent magnetic actuator. According to the asymmetry of the reacting force from vacuum interrupter and its mechanical transmission system, this paper presents a method setting magnetism divider around the operating air gap of the opening coil. By which, the magnetic flux through the surface of pole is divided into the central flux and the border flux so as to improve the electromagnetic attraction characteristics and meet the on off need of 72.5 kV high voltage vacuum circuit breaker even under longer separation. The static magnetic field and the dynamic characteristics of permanent magnetic actuator are analyzed, and the calculation results and simulation results are presented.

Abstract:An approach of improved permanent magnetic actuator of vacuum circuit breaker is presented in this paper. By means of setting up the auxiliary opening coil and the auxiliary closing coil, the performance of the permanent magnetic actuator is obviously improved, as results, the closing and opening times become fast, the initial closing and opening velocities become high, the peak currents of the closing and opening coils become small, and the energy consumptions of the capacitors reduce.

Abstract:The performance of giant magnetostrictive micro high-speed valve was improved through reforming the shape of coil and giant magnetostrictive material Terfenol-D.Choosing appropriate diameter of enameled wire can decrease the resistance of solenoid;increasing the solenoid's geometry factor can improve the magnetic field level;and optimizing the geometry of Terfenol-D can decrease the magnetic reluctance,lessen the eddy current losses and increase the effective flux.Considering all these analysis results with the method of improving the energy conversion efficiency,the rule of optimization design for giant magnetostrictive actuator was put forward.The experimental contrast in the performance of two actuators proved the validity of the rule.

Abstract:For the problem that ordinary MR damper requires extra field coil and has dependence on energy with large volume and complex structure,a magnetic field structure of passive adaptive MR damper was designed.The magnetic circuit provided magnetic field by permanent magnet and transformed the variation of load force on MR damper into the variation of relative permeability of giant magnetostrictive material based on giant magnetostrictive inverse effect,and thus made magnetic field through the magnetorheological fluid changed.Finite element method was used to verify the correctness of the magnetic circuit.Apply the magnetic structure in passive adaptive MR damper and experiment was done.The result shows that the designed magnetic field structure can change the variation of external force into the variation of magnetic flux density and then change into the variation of damping force.The design of magnetic field meets the requirements of passive adaptive MR damper.

Abstract:An air circuit breaker (ACB) with novel double-breaker contact and permanent magnet actuator (PMA) is presented. Three-dimensional (3-D) finite element method (FEM) is employed to compute the electro-dynamic repulsion forces, including the Holm force and Lorentz force, which are acting on the static and movable contacts. The electro-dynamic repulsion forces of different contact pieces are computed, illustrating there is an optimal number of contact pieces for the ACB being studied. The electro-dynamic repulsion force of each contact, which varies from the outer position to the inner position, is also computed. Finally, the contacts of the double-breaker are manufactured according to the analyzed results to validate the simulations.

Abstract:Vacuum circuit breakers are the dominant technology in medium-voltage distribution networks since they are environment friendly and maintenance free. It is a challenge to design an actuator for a vacuum circuit breaker, which achieves a high operating speed while maintaining high efficiency. A fast operating moving coil actuator for a vacuum interrupter has been developed. An analytical model of the actuator was initially developed and then simulated using a 3-D finite-element (FE) model. The model showed that the opening force was higher than the closing force due to asymmetry in the structure of the actuator, which resulted in a reluctance force component. The complete operating actuator prototype was built to avoid known problems such as contact popping, bounce, rebound, and welding. The magnetic field distribution and the static electromagnetic force on the moving coil were measured and provided a good correlation with the FE model simulation predications. The opening operation of the actuator prototype was compared for different capacitor supply voltages. A maximum velocity of 2.3m/s was achieved when the capacitor was charged to 150V. The actuator demonstrated successful operation at atmospheric pressure and also in a vacuum chamber. The opening time of the actuator in the vacuum was approximately 5ms, compared to 5.5ms at atmospheric pressure. We designed and built this actuator to illustrate that the moving coil actuator is capable of operating the vacuum circuit breaker quickly with high efficiency. Tests showed that further design optimizations for improving the operating speed and efficiency of the moving coil actuator are essential and the options have also been suggested.

Abstract:Here,we addressed the relationship between the shield potential and the internal pressure of the vacuum circuit breaker in the three phases of the pressure building-up,based on electromagnetic theory,gas discharge theory,and the published results in the literature.The dependence of pressure on the dielectric constant of the residue gases was evaluated.The shield potential,especially when the pressure in the vacuum interrupter is lower than 0.1 Pa,was modeled,approximated,and calculated in three-dimension finite element method.The calculated results show that in the pressure range below 0.1 Pa,as the pressure increases,the A.C.shield potential increases with an amplitude up to 2 V;whereas at a pressure above 0.1Pa,the shield potential turns into a D.C.potential.

Abstract:A kind of actuator, which is used in the high frequency Vibratory Stress Relief (VSR), was researched. The actuator is based on the technology of giant magnetostrictive materials. The design principle of the actuator was firstly analyzed, which consists of the analysis of giant magnetostrictive materials and a force generator. Then the design criterion of magnetostrictive actuators was deeply discussed, which includes the dimension design of magnetostrictive materials, the design of magnetic field and the design of elimination of heat. Finally, a real actuator was developed, which has been used in the high frequency VSR. The experimental results show that the developed actuator works very well. Large exciting force but small vibration amplitude will make it widely used in the VSR.

Abstract:In this paper, a kind of permanent magnet operating mechanism was modeled and studied by using ADAMS and Ansoft software, and the model was verified by experiments. Then, six common faults were chosen to do simulated analysis, and opening and closing process was divided into three stages according to its force analysis, respectively. The angle displacement of main axis, which related to the moving contact's displacement, was treated as the objective to study the performance of permanent magnet operating mechanism. When the research is combined with on-line monitoring technology, it can be used to guide fault diagnosis and condition prediction of vacuum circuit breaker.

Abstract:This paper introduces the development history of vacuum circuit breakers. According to the low reliability of the vacuum circuit breakers with single opening and closing coil, this paper proposes a new type of 10kV quick vacuum circuit breaker with double opening and closing coils. This new type circuit breaker has two opening and closing coils, which together act on the metal disc of the circuit breaker to ensure the reliability. Then, the electromagnetic repulsion force of the metal disk is deduced using the equivalent calculation method. On this basis, mathematical analysis and calculation are performed on the electromagnetic repulsion of the circuit breaker's metal disc. Thereby the reliablity of the quick vacuum circuit breaker with double opening and closing coils is proved.

Abstract:This paper applies a method of motor direct drive high voltage circuit breaker (HVCB), through establishing the simulation model calculation and the circuit breaker prototype test, the control capability during the opening and closing operations is investigated. In this operating mechanism, the travel of the moving contact of HVCB is controlled by the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). A simulation model of the motor control system is built and the control algorithm of the PMSM is introduced. Based on the control theory and simulations, an experimental system with a 126kV HVCB and a 30kW PMSM is established to test the motor drive operating mechanism. The simulation results and Motor drive prototype test results show that the operating characteristics of the motor drive mechanism are stable, reliable and can fulfill the requirements of HVCB operations. This operating mechanism can also enable the intelligent operations of HVCB to meet future requirements of modern electric power grid.

Abstract:In the transmission and distribution of energy, circuit breaker plays a very important role. In order to fulfill the current market/user demands, they must be capable of promptly identifying the problem and isolating the problematic areas. According to the extinguishing medium used, circuit breakers are divided into the following categories: air blast, SF6, vacuum, and oil. Among others, permanent magnet (PM) based vacuum circuit breaker is also gaining popularity with each passing day and has become a crucial control and protection equipment in the modern power systems. This study proposes the pulse width modulation (PWM) intelligent control strategy for PM vacuum circuit breaker closing/opening capacitance, group charging, and movement process. For the practical implementation of this idea, dual CPUs are utilized for PM vacuum circuit breaker intelligent control components, by taking STM32F103RBT6 as the core and combining peripheral hardware circuit. PWM pulse output drives IGBT to fulfill the closing/opening capacitance group intelligent charging. On the other hand, PM circuit breaker closing/opening motion displacement signals and coil current feedback achieve closed-loop for PWM intelligent control. The experimental results show that the proposed intelligent control component and PWM intelligent control strategy effectively improve the PM circuit breaker intelligent charging and motion dynamic characteristics.

Abstract:In order to meet the fast operation demands of DC circuit breakers, a high-speed vacuum mechanical switch (VMS) driven by a repulsive force actuator is focused. To improve the drive speed and energy conversion efficiency (ECE) of the actuators, the dynamic characteristics of the double sided coil repulsive force actuators are investigated, and two generalized optimization design methods focusing on the aspect ratio of the driving coils (defined as ARF) and the electrical parameters (defined as EF) are developed. FEM simulation models' simulation and tests of VMS prototypes are conducted to verify the optimization methods. Results prove that the ARF method could improve the ECE of a VMS from 1.05% to 7.55%, and EF method could improve ECE of the same VMS from 1.05% to 6.61%, the combination of ARF and EF could improve the value of VMS's ECE to 10.50%, thus proving the validity and accuracy of the optimization methods.

Abstract:This paper describes an operating mechanism driven by a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for high voltage circuit breakers (HVCB). It analyzes the relationship between the optimal moving contact travel of HVCB and the PMSM torque, and proposes the main parameters and requirements of PMSM to be suitable for the optimal contact travel. The simulation model of the operating mechanism driven by PMSM was builtusing Matlab. It simulates and calculatesthe mechanism'sopening and closing operations characteristics. The voltage waveforms of stator currentsanalyzing, offers a helpful reference to compile the Digital Signal processing ( DSP) programs. The performances of the opening and closing operationscould be improved by debugging the DSP programs in the control unit.

Abstract:In order to improve the working characteristics of high-voltage circuit breakers and achieve energy saving and emission reduction, a new operating mechanism of 126kV high-voltage vacuum circuit breaker directly driven by three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) was studied. The simulation model of the control system was established by Matlab/Simulink, and the control system of the direct drive operation mechanism of the vacuum circuit breaker was designed and implemented based on the TMS320F28335 hardware platform. The simulation calculation and experimental results show that the 126kV high-voltage vacuum circuit breaker operating mechanism directly driven by PMSM can realize the opening and closing operation of the circuit breaker according to the preset contact motion curve. The research shows the feasibility of using a motor to drive the 126kV high-voltage vacuum circuit breaker operating mechanism, and can meet the requirements of high-voltage circuit breaker operation.

Abstract:DC Vacuum Circuit Breakers based arc control has been a major topic in the last few decades. Understanding vacuum arc (VA) gives the ability to improve vacuum circuit breakers capacity. In this paper, the interaction of a DC vacuum arc with a combined Axial-Radial magnetic field was investigated. The proposed system contains an external coil to produce axial magnetic field (AMF) across the vacuum chamber. The vacuum interrupter (VI) contacts were assumed to be untreated radial magnetic field (RMF) contacts. For this purpose, Finite Element Method (FEM) based Multiphysics simulation of the immerging magnetic field influence on the VA is presented. The simulation shown the ability of the presented system to deflect high DC vacuum arc, also reveals that the vacuum arc interruption capability increases with the rise of the axial component of the magnetic field. Simulation results shown that this method can be applied to improve the interruption capability of the VI.

Abstract:This paper introduces a research work on the development of high-voltage (HV) vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) in China from its start point 1989 to 2006. In this period, a 126-kV two breaks VCB prototype and a 126-kV single break VCB prototype were developed. A latest 252-kV single break interrupter prototype is introduced. Five HV VCBs technologies are discussed, which include HV vacuum insulation, high current interrupting technology with long contact gaps, increasing nominal current, operating mechanism characteristics, and contact bouncing damping. In vacuum insulation, adding a metal ring at electrode back can decrease breakdown possibilities in the gap between the electrode back and main shield. Surface melting layer of contact material could have influence on voltage withstanding capability of a vacuum gap. For interrupting high current with long contact gaps, strong axial magnetic field (AMF) is needed for a better vacuum arc control. Therefore, a single coil AMF electrode is introduced. Heat radiators are effective to increase nominal current of VCBs. Thermal analysis can help to give appropriate design parameters. There is an optimum opening characteristic that is helpful to improve the interrupting performance of VCBs. Permanent magnet operating mechanism and spring-type operating mechanism are suitable for HV VCBs. Contact bouncing in HV VCBs can be damped by installing contact spring and bellows on stationary end of VCBs.

Abstract:The fast DC vacuum circuit breaker is required that the vacuum interrupter can not only break large current within several milliseconds, but also guarantee the required mechanical life under the condition that the mechanical impact is much larger than that of the AC vacuum interrupter. This paper investigates the DC breaking capability of three typical vacuum interrupters with axial magnetic field contact structure without slots, with radial slots and with parallel slots by simulation. And the current breaking capability of contacts without slots is proved by prototype test. A test circuit and a method for current breaking capability of fast switchgears are proposed. The research results can provide technical reference for the engineering application of fast DC vacuum switchgears.
