Abstract:For the last 15 years, the longwall top-coal caving (LTC) technology has been developing rapidly in China. But the theory research for LTC technology lag well behind the prod-action. In this paper, the authors analyze and review the theory background of the LTC technology, outline the future research and development of LTC technology.

Abstract:Mining subsidence land reclamation was focused on stable land for the past 30 years in China. In eastern China, a relatively flat terrain and high groundwater table area, mining activities cause more than half of the subsided land submerged in water and the fertilized top soil was lost permanently, which leads to a low percentage of farmland reclamation and inevitably increases the reclamation cost. In this paper, a new technology and innovative concept of Concurrent Mining and Reclamation (CMR) was proposed, and its principles and key technologies of CMR for underground coal mining were presented. The advantages with high reclamation percentage of land resources for the new technology were proved based on a case study; CMR could increase farmland reclamation percentages to 37.59%, compared with the farmland reclamation percentage of post-mining. The scope and prospects of application of CMR were also discussed. CMR could be used in 5 of the 14 large coal bases in China. It is estimated that the application of CMR could increase land area by 6680.9 km2.

Abstract:Based on techniques of close upper protective coal-rock layer mining, relieved gas extraction, and underground gangue washing-discharging-backfilling, this paper initiates the concept of mixed fully-mechanized coal mining, which combines a solid backfilling method and a caving method (hereinafter referred to as "backfill and caving mixed mining"). After the principle and key techniques are introduced, a physical simulation experiment and a numerical simulation are used to study the characteristics of the overlying strata's fracture development, the main roof subsidence, the stress field and its influence area in the transition area with the length ratios of the backfilling section and the caving section, and the advancing distance of the mixed longwall face. Thus, the lengths of the caving section and the backfilling section, the parameters of the support system in the transition section, and the design process of the mixed longwall face are presented. In practice, the mixed longwall face Ji(15)-31010 in Ping-dingshan No. 12 Colliery proves that the designed lengths of 120 m and 100 m for the backfilling section and the caving section, respectively, are appropriate. The monitoring results of the hydraulic support working resistance show that the supports were working well in general; the maximum growth height of the overlying strata fracture is 18 m; the gas drainage efficiency is up to 80% and the average gas concentration is 0.1 g/m(3); a large quantity of gangue generated in the Ji(14) seam is disposed underground; coal and gas are extracted simultaneously; and significant environmental and economic benefits are realized.

Abstract:China has made notable advancements in the intelligent construction of coal mines. However, for longwall top coal caving (LTCC) mining faces, a key obstacle impeding the intelligent transition of the coal-cutting process is automated control. This paper focuses on the aforementioned issue and comprehensively considers the pre-, intra-, and post-coal-caving stages. In this work, diverse detection and monitoring technologies are integrated at various stages through a computer platform, facilitating the construction of an automated coal caving control system with self-perception, self-learning, self-decision-making, and self-execution capabilities. Key technologies include ground-penetrating radar-based top coal thickness detection, inertial navigation-based shearer positioning, tail beam vibration-based identification of coal and gangue, and magnetostrictive sensor-based monitoring of the tail beam and insert plate attitude. In this study, the 12309 working face of the Wangjialing Coal Mine was experimentally validated, and the efficacy of the aforementioned key technologies was assessed. The results demonstrated that the control requirements for automated coal caving are satisfied by the maximum errors. Automatic regulation of coal caving was realized through the implementation of this system, thereby facilitating initiation and cessation and yielding promising experimental outcomes. Overall, this system offers practical insights for intelligent construction in current LTCC mining faces and the sustainable development of coal resources.

Abstract:Although it is of great significance to master the height of the water-conducting fracture zone (WCFZ) to prevent coal mine disasters and ensure safe production, the most important thing is to predict the height and range of the WCFZ ahead of the working face design before coal mining. Therefore, the 150313 fully mechanized top-coal caving working face of the Yinying coal mine was taken as the engineering background. The development laws of WCFZ were studied using comprehensive research methods, including similar simulation experiments, key strata theory, the experience formula, the numerical simulation, etc. The results show that the WCFZ evolution stage is "goaf–caving zone–fracture zone" and the developing pattern is in a non-isosceles trapezoid gradually developing upward and forward. The height of the WCFZ in the 150313 working face is 89.36 m, and the fracture/mining ratio is 12.46, which is consistent with the actual production. Apparently, the set of indoor research methods in this paper is feasible to predict the height and scope of the WCFZ. The research results can provide a scientific reference for safe mining of the 15# coal seam in Shanxi Province and the prevention and control of roof water hazards.

Abstract:Dynamic sublevel caving technology (DSCT) proposed by the researchers is one of effective methods to solve the problems of low top coal recovery, poor drawing balance and support stability in longwall top coal caving (LTCC) with large dip angle. To investigate the reasonable number of supports in a sublevel ( N ) and the top coal drawing mechanisms under DSCT, this research takes Panel 7401 in Zouzhuang Coal Mine as the geological background. Firstly, the optimal threshold value of N is theoretically analyzed, and the numerical simulations of drawing experiments under different N s are calculated. The results show that when N = 3, the top coal recovery is the highest, the number of excessive drawing top coal at the upper end is relatively small, and the drawing balance is great, which is conducive to improving the resource recovery and safety management. With increasing N , the over-development of right top coal boundary towards the upper end increases, the range of coal ridge in the lower sublevel also gradually increases, while the strong force chain area at the upper end gradually decreases, resulting in the support stability becoming worse. In addition, the displacement of top coal at the upper end gradually increases with increasing N , and the permanent loss feature of residual top coal exists in the upper sublevel. The field top coal recovery under DSCT was measured finally, obtaining that DSCT can improve the top coal recovery by about 5% and promote the stability and working efficiency of the support. The research results have great theoretical and guiding significance for the high yield and high efficiency LTCC technology for thick coal seam with large dip angle.

Abstract:China has abundant coal resources, and the distribution of coal seams is complex. Thick coal seams account for more than 45% of all coal seams. Fully mechanized top coal caving mining has the advantages of large production, high efficiency, and low cost. In fully mechanized caving mining, especially in fully mechanized caving mining of extra-thick coal seams, the mining space is ample, the mine pressure is severe, and the roadway maintenance is complex. As a result, it is necessary to summarize and discuss the gob-side entry driving of fully mechanized caving in theory and technology, which will help to promote the further development of fully mechanized caving gob-side entry driving technology. First, in recent years, the research hotspots of gob-side entry driving have focused on the deformation mechanism and the control method of the roadway surrounding rock. Secondly, this paper discusses the theoretical models of the “triangle-block” and “beam” for the activity law of the overlying strata in gob-side entry driving, including the lateral breaking “large structure” model, compound key triangle block structure model in the middle and low position, the high and low right angle key block stability mechanics model, elastic foundation beam model, low-level combined cantilever beam + high-level multilayer masonry beam structure model, and the vertical triangular slip zone structure model. It introduces the “internal and external stress field theory” and the “stress limit equilibrium zone model”. Thirdly, it summarizes several numerical simulation analysis methods in different conditions or research focuses and selects appropriate constitutive models and simulation software. Finally, it introduces surrounding rock control technology, including two ribs, the roof, and under challenging conditions. It provides a method reference for support in similar projects.

Abstract:Thick-coal-seam with complex structures and thick-hard roof in the initial mining phase pose various challenges, including a long weighting interval, strong rock pressure, poor top coal caving performance (TCCP), and significant coal loss. These problems directly affect the safety and efficiency of the mining operations. This study employs the principles of elastic thin plates and ellipsoidal bodies to unravel the formation mechanism of strong rock pressure in thick-hard roof and the influence of parting on the TCCP. In addition, a hydraulic fracturing technique is proposed for safe-efficient recovery during the initial mining phase. The reliability of this technique is verified through numerical simulations and field experiments. The research findings reveal the following. (1) The primary causes of strong rock pressure in the mining face are attributed to a long weighting interval and wide collapse range of the main roof, and the weighting interval is primarily influenced by the thickness and tensile strength of the main roof. (2)The key factor affecting the TCCP is the cantilever beam structure formed by the fracture of the thick-hard parting, as it intersects the ellipsoidal body during coal caving. The simultaneous fracturing of both the top coal and roof can reduce the weighting interval on the working face. This process effectively decreased the strength of the thick-hard parting within the top coal, while simultaneously enhancing its load strength and eliminating the cantilever structure resulting from the parting fracture. It not only reduces the first weighting intensity but also promotes the early and proper coal release, thereby enhancing the TCCP and ensuring safe-efficient mining during the initial mining phase. (3) Aiming at the difference in the strengths of the top coal and roof, a graded hydraulic fracturing technique and system were proposed. Fracturing boreholes with a diameter of 60 mm, spacing of 10 m, and height of 20.85 m, which can economically and effectively ensure the fracturing results. Field applications have demonstrated that fractured coal and rocks in fracturing areas exhibit well-developed fractures. During the initial mining phase, the weighting interval in the working face was reduced by 20 m, resulting in a decrease in the overburden pressure and 26.9% reduction in the lumpiness of the top coal. Additionally, the recovery rate increased by 31.19%.

Abstract:Abstract This study considered the role of coal as China’s basic energy source and examines the development of the coal industry. We focused on the intelligent development of coal mines, and introduced the “Chinese mode” of intelligent mining in underground coal mines, which uses complete sets of technical equipment to propose classification and grading standards. In view of the basic characteristics and technical requirements of intelligent coal mine systems, we established a digital logic model and propose an information entity and knowledge map construction method. This involves an active information push strategy based on a knowledge demand model and an intelligent portfolio modeling and distribution method for collaborative control of coal mines. The top-level architecture of 5G+ intelligent coal mine systems combines intelligent applications such as autonomous intelligent mining, human–machine collaborative rapid tunneling, unmanned auxiliary transportation, closed-loop safety control, lean collaborative operation, and intelligent ecology. Progress in intelligent mining technology was described in terms of a dynamic modified geological model, underground 5G network and positioning technology, intelligent control of the mining height and straightness of the longwall working face, and intelligent mining equipment. The development of intelligent coal mines was analyzed in terms of its imbalances, bottlenecks, and the compatibility of large-scale systems. Implementation ideas for promoting the development of intelligent coal mines were proposed, such as establishing construction standards and technical specifications, implementing classification and grading standards according to mining policy, accelerating key technology research, and building a new management and control model.

Abstract:In this study, the finite difference method (FDM) coupled with a discrete fracture network (DFN) was utilized to analyze longwall top coal caving (LTCC) behaviors. The integrated FDM–DFN model enabled the influence of the preexisting fracture, stress redistribution, stress rotation, caving material compaction, and periodic rupture of roof strata to be superimposed on the failure process of top coal. It was revealed the LTCC influenced both magnitude and orientation of the principal stress within top coal. The minor and major principal stresses experienced successive peak points as top coal approached the LTCC face, and the corresponding principal axes rotated toward horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. The concentration of the major principal stress and the release of the minor principal stress resulted in the shear failure of top coal ahead of the LTCC face. The failure mode transferred from shear to tension at the rear of the face line. The principal stress rotation led to continuous variation in internal cohesion of top coal and brittle fracturing of the main roof resulted in dynamic load at the LTCC face. The stress rotation and roof rupture greatly promoted the failure process of top coal. This type of promotion was also provided by the preexisting fractures and adjacent goaf.

Abstract:The re-mined face using top coal caving system is the most applicable method for recovering the remaining reserves of a previous partially-mined thick coal seam. However, this mining method may encounter the problems of low recovery and unpredicted geological conditions. A numerical model is developed using PFC2D for studying the movement of top coal mass and development of coal-rock mass interface at a longwall top coal caving re-mined face. The re-mined face advances in the lower seam below the upper solid coal pillar, previous entries and gob. A theoretical analysis according to the unsteady flow model is developed to calculate the proper time duration of caving operation. The results showed that the top coal to be recovered through the caving window before the initiation of caving operation is a partial spheroid-shaped geometry. The boundary between the coal and rock mass then develops to a funnel-shaped coal-roof interface as the caving operation continues. The top coal recovery is 98.1%, 77.1% and 70.5% for caving operations below the solid coal, entries and gob area in the upper seam, respectively. The proper timing of caving and interval of caving operation is important for obtaining a high coal recovery. Good agreement is achieved between the proposed model and the improved Boundary-Release model for short of B-R model. The study in this work may provide reference for the safety and efficiency of the extraction of the longwall top coal caving re-mined face.

Abstract:The study introduces a novel solid backfilling technology, aiming to address gangue accumulation problem in top coal caving mining. To reveal its top coal drawing mechanism, discrete physical and numerical models were established. During the initial drawing stage, considerable amounts of low-position top coal are extracted, with yields fluctuating. As the working face advances, the drawing body shape shifts from knife-handle to semi-arch, and coal-gangue boundary curvature varies periodically. At low backfilling ratios, premature gangue exposure causes the loss of high-position top coal. Conversely, higher backfilling ratios facilitate the creation of a reconstructed floor, thereby enhancing top coal recovery.

Abstract:To analyze the feasibility of fully mechanized large mining height long wall top-coal caving mining (LLTCC) in ultra-thick (20–30 m), parting-rich coal seams, a case study on No. 6 coal seam of the Laosangou mining field was conducted. First, the distribution pattern of the coal-seam structure was mastered and generalized based on the coal-seam thickness, parting thickness, and parting horizon. On this basis, physical simulation and UDEC simulation were performed to analyze the top-coal fracture characteristic and the impact of partings. The top-coal caving of No. 6 coal seam was systematically evaluated with statistical results of coal-seam recovery height (h re) and mining–caving ratio (R mc). Finally, the range of mining height (h) at LLTCC faces was determined as an indicator for the division of LLTCC feasible regions in the Laosangou mining field, which is based on the R mc, h re, coal-wall stability, and equipment selection. The results show that the top-coal caving structure of LLTCC faces can be divided into four layers which were effected by top-coal thickness and upper-horizon partings. LLTCC in ultra-thick (20–30 m), parting-rich coal seams was highly feasible. The top-coal cavability of No. 6 coal seam was good overall, and the R mc was about 1:2.89–1:3.91. Direct mining regions (h = 4.0–5.3 m) and buffer mining regions (h = 5.3–6.0 m) of LLTCC were 52.66% and 42.96%, respectively. This study can be used as a reference for the design of LLTCC in similar coal mines.
Non-repeated advance support technology: a fully mechanized caving face in extra thick coal seam of North China

Abstract:The stability of tailgate plays an important role in the safety mining of working face. In the present work, a tailgate of Tongxin mine in north Shanxi Province, China, has been taken as the research background; the non-repeated and long-distance advance support technology (NLAST) has been studied by theoretical analyses and field practice. The lateral overburden structure characteristics (LOSC) and interaction relationship with advance support device and surrounding rock have been studied by theoretical analyses, and the advance support mechanics model based on the support device-bolt coordinated operation has been established. Research results showed that the advance support strength (ASS) was not less than 280.77 kPa, the single-span type of support device was determined, and the advance support mechanism of "pre-active loading, one-time bearing, coordinated operating, overall supporting" was put forward. This way, a NLAST by using ZLQ2820/26.5/41.5 type of non-repeated advance support and transportation equipment was developed, and the main technical parameters and support schemes were analyzed. It was found that the roof separation amount and surrounding rock deformation of the tailgate were in the controllable range with the advance support technology, which can meet the requirements of advance support. The research results provide a new reference for the advance support of fully mechanized caving face (FMCF) in extra thick coal seam under similar geological conditions.

Drawing mechanisms for top coal in longwall top coal caving (LTCC): A review of two decades of literature

Abstract:Abstract This review details the state of the art in research on top coal drawing mechanisms in Longwall t op c oal c aving (LTCC) by examining the relevant literature over the last two decades. It starts with an introduction of the brief history and basic procedures of LTCC. The framework of research on the drawing mechanism, basic concepts, and some theoretical models of LTCC are detailed in sect. research framework of top coal drawing mechanism. The authors note that the T op c oal d rawbody (TCD), T op c oal b oundary (TCB) and T op c oal r ecovery r atio (TCRR) are key factors in the drawing mechanism. The B ody– b oundary– r atio (BBR) research system has been the classic framework for research over the last 20 years. The modified Bergmark–Roos model, which considers the effects of the supporting rear canopy, flowing velocity of top coal, and its shape factor, is optimal for characterizing the TCD. A 3D model to describe the TCB that considers the thicknesses of the coal seam and roof strata is reviewed. In sect. physical testing and numerical simulation, the physical tests and numerical simulations in the literature are classified for ease of bibliographical review, and classic conclusions regarding the drawing mechanism of top coal are presented and discussed with elaborate illustrations and descriptions. The deflection of the TCD is noted, and is caused by the shape of the rear canopy. The inclined coal seam always induces a larger TCD, and a deflection in the TCD has also been observed in it. The effects of the drawing sequence and drawing interval on the TCRR are reviewed, where a long drawing interval is found to lead to significant loss of top coal. Its flowing behavior and velocity distribution are also presented. Sect. practical applications of drawing mechanisms for LTCC mines 4 summarizes over 10 cases where the TCRR of LTCC mines improved due to the guidance of the drawing mechanism. The final section provides a summary of the work here and some open questions. Prospective investigations are highlighted to give researchers guidance on promising issues in future research on LTCC.

Preliminary Exploration of the Technology of Coal Reshaping and Replacement Mining of Abandoned Coal in Goafs

Abstract:Recycling of coal resources left behind in goafs and the treatment and utilization of solid waste from mines are topical issues faced by the global coal mining industry at present. With the annual reduction of recoverable reserves of coal resources and the dependence on coal resources that are difficult to replace, the problems have become increasingly prominent, seriously limiting the development of coal resources and the implementation of environmental protection work. The mutual influence between the strength of filling materials and the size of loose coal in the CRRM process through numerical simulation experiments, laboratory rock mechanics experiments, and on-site large-scale similar simulation material experiments is explored. It is ultimately believed that selecting a filling material with a 20 cm particle size of loose coal and a 90% proportion of loose coal for 7 days can meet the requirements of the CRRM process, and this conclusion has been verified through on-site engineering scale experiments. The scientific problems faced by various links in the process of filling and replacing abandoned coal in goafs were analyzed, and improvement methods were further proposed; the technical system of filling and replacing abandoned coal was improved, and new directions for the efficient and safe recovery of abandoned coal resources worldwide in the future were developed.

Abstract:To further enhance the intelligent technology, platformisation, and systematisation of coalbed methane extraction sealing technology, this paper analyses the research progress of theories, technologies, and sealing materials related to coalbed methane extraction sealing and systematically summarises the latest achievements of the basic theories, key technologies, and sealing materials of coalbed methane extraction. Considering the increasing mining depth, advancements in intelligent technology, and the evolving landscape of coalbed methane development, it is particularly important to establish a more comprehensive coalbed methane extraction borehole sealing system. Based on this, future development trends and research prospects are proposed: In terms of coalbed-methane-extraction-related theories, there should be a stronger focus on fundamental research such as on gas flow within the coal matrix. For coalbed methane extraction borehole sealing technologies and devices, efforts should be made to enhance research on intelligent, platform-based, and systematic approaches, while adapting to the application of directional long borehole sealing processes. In terms of coalbed methane extraction borehole leakage detection, non-contact measurement and non-destructive monitoring methods should be employed to achieve dynamic monitoring and early warning of methane leaks, integrating these technologies into coalbed methane extraction system platforms. For coalbed methane extraction borehole sealing materials, further development is needed for liquid sealing materials that address borehole creep and the development of fractures in surrounding rock, as well as solid sealing materials with Poisson's ratios similar to that of the surrounding rock mass.

Study on Roof Instability Effect and Bearing Characteristics of Hydraulic Support in Longwall Top Coal Caving

Abstract:In longwall top coal caving (LTCC), due to the fracture and migration of top coal, the roof will break and collapse, which causes serious impact damage to hydraulic support. Therefore, we aimed to reveal the relationship between the roof instability effect and the bearing characteristics of hydraulic support in the LTCC face. Based on the occurrence conditions of the 08 mining area in the Shilawusu Coal Mine, the instability model of the upper immediate roof was established, and the working resistance of hydraulic support was derived. Secondly, the dynamic coupling model of roof-top coal-hydraulic support was established in LS-DYNA, and the crushing degree of top coal and the bearing characteristics of the hydraulic support in different roof instability fields were analyzed. The results show that the main factors affecting the working resistance of hydraulic support are the fracture position of the upper immediate roof, the acting force of the lower immediate roof, and the distribution of the gangue in the goaf. The rotary instability of the upper immediate roof at the coal wall brings serious impact effects, resulting in fractures in front of the coal wall and a large amount of crushed coal concentrated at the front end of the canopy. The crushing degree of top coal significantly impacts the canopy, especially the back end of the canopy and the hinged pin shaft, which is prone to bending fracture. The research results can provide references and experience for the stability control of roof strata and the structural optimization of hydraulic support.

Abstract:According to the development and application status of the thick seam mining methods in China,the paper analyzed the techni- cal and economic advantages anti application conditions of the high cutting and top coal caving mining methods.Base on the coal wall spalling and equipment sliding occurred in the high cutting face and the low coal recovery rate,gas and spontaneous combustion control, hard roof weakening and other difficulties of the top coal caving mining face,the effective measures shall be taken from the point of the mining technology.The paper discussed the research key points and the coal mining method selection principle for the future thick seam mining technology.The paper analyzed the three thick seam mining methods from the mining technology to technique and the safety pro- duction status.The paper pointed out the thick seam mining status and the state technical policy in China and determined the research key points and development tendency of the future thick seam mining technology.

Abstract:The article describes how current risk assessment of pressure mining using the "water inrush coefficient method" based on the Down Three Zones Theory is relatively inconsistent with the facts in practice. Based on the Down Three Zones Theory, the intact aquiclude is divided into a water pressure-free zone and a water pressure zone, and four kinds of mining discriminant models containing pressure are summarized by analyzing the influence of the confined groundwater on the intact aquiclude, according to the effect on its spatial characteristics. The relationship between the ratio of water head loss and permeability coefficient in the process of confined water conduction is obtained by building laboratory experiment model, and the height of water pressure zone is determined. The discriminant models are verified using the 81004 working face of the Caozhuang mine field in the Feicheng coalfield. The discriminant model results agree with the actual situation in the field and can be used to evaluate whether a coal seam can be safely mined.
