Abstract:This study presents an investigation into a dual-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sensor featuring a D-shaped configuration. The sensor leverages surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to enable precise measurement of analyte refractive index (RI) across a broad spectrum. The D-shaped PCF surface is polished and coated with indium tin oxide (ITO) to initiate the SPR phenomenon as a plasma-active material. With a dual-core design, our PCF sensor amplifies SPR coupling, markedly enhancing sensor efficacy. Employing larger diameter air holes arranged within the PCF cladding simplifies the production process and enhances the convergence of core energy simultaneously. Using the finite element method (FEM), different structural parameters are analyzed in detail, such as the thickness and width of the ITO film, the diameter of the air holes, the polishing depth and the lattice spacing, and the influence of the coupling characteristics and sensor performance in different RI ranges is explored. Through meticulous design, the PCF sensor showcases outstanding performance, featuring an impressive maximum wavelength sensitivity of 22,100 nm/RIU and a peak amplitude sensitivity of 367.60 RIU −1 , covering a broad RI detection range from 1.22 to 1.36. The sensor's capacity to promptly detect alterations in analyte RI via the SPR effect is vividly evident in our findings, showcasing its unparalleled responsiveness and accuracy in real-time detection. The proposed sensor offers a wide range of applications in biosensing technology, expanding its capabilities to various fields such as healthcare, environmental monitoring, gas concentration analysis, agricultural safety assessment, and ecosystem surveillance.
