Novel Method for High-Performance Simultaneous Removal of NOx and SO2 by Coupling Yellow Phosphorus Emulsion with Red Mud

Abstract:This study develops a novel method for simultaneously removing NOx and SO2 from coal-fired flue gas via coupling yellow phosphorus emulsion with red mud. The effects of different factors on the synergistic purification of sulphur-nitric acid were investigated in this study. The achieved removal efficiencies of NOx and SO2 were as high as 97.9% and 100%, respectively, under optimized conditions. This indicates that the yellow phosphorus emulsion coupled with red mud as a composite absorbent is favorable for simultaneous removal effect on NOx and SO2. The samples before and after the reaction were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Xray fluorescence, inductively coupled plasma, scanning electron microscopy, and other methods, and the main product was identified as gypsum (CaSO42H2O) after desulfurization and denitrification. Adsorption kinetics, isotherm adsorption, and breakthrough curve models of NOx and SO2 adsorption on red mud were established. Moreover, the mechanism of multiphase oxidation and absorption reactions for simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification was also speculated.

Abstract:SO2 removal is critical to flue gas purification. However, based on performance and cost, materials under development are hardly adequate substitutes for active carbon-based materials. Here, we engineered biomass-derived nanostructured carbon nanofibers integrated with highly dispersed bimetallic Ti/CoOx nanoparticles through the thermal transition of metal-phenolic functionalized industrial leather wastes for synergistic SO2 adsorption and in situ catalytic conversion. The generation of surface-SO32- and peroxide species (O22-) by Ti/CoOx achieved catalytic conversion of adsorbed SO2 into value-added liquid H2SO4, which can be discharged from porous nanofibers. This approach can also avoid the accumulation of the adsorbed SO2, thereby achieving high desulfurization activity and a long operating life over 6000 min, preceding current state-of-the-art active carbon-based desulfurization materials. Combined with the techno-economic and carbon footprint analysis from 36 areas in China, we demonstrated an economically viable and scalable solution for real-world SO2 removal on the industrial scale.

Abstract:Systematic comparative experiments on simultaneous flue gas desulfurization and denitrification were conducted with CaCO3 as the sorbent and with NaClO2 and KMnO4 as oxidants.The influences of different experimental conditions on the removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO were examined.Experimental results show that NaClO2 gives better desulfurization and denitrification results than KMnO4 under the same conditions.Lower pH is beneficial to denitrification oxidized with NaClO2,but it has no significant impact on denitrification with KMnO4.NO removal efficiency can be improved by increasing SO2 concentration or decreasing NO concentration,more notably for the oxidant NaClO2 than KMnO4.Increasing the feeding amount of oxidant or the depth of jet tubes immersed into the sorbent results in a rise in the removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO.

Abstract:SO2 and NOx in flue gas are serious environmental pollutants. As an excellent adsorbent, activated coke has good application potential in flue gas desulfurization and denitrification. In this study, different concentrations of NH3 and K2CO3 solutions were used to modify the activated coke made from biomass and coal, and then separate and coordinated desulfurization and denitrification experiments were carried out. The adsorption efficiency of activated coke and the adsorption capacity of SO2 and NO were compared, and the adsorption relationship between SO2 and NO was clarified. The changes of the surface functional groups of activated coke before and after adsorption and the forms of SO2 and NO after adsorption were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and X-ray diffractometer patterns. Results show that K2CO3 and NH3 modification can promote the adsorption of SO2 and NO in activated coke, and K2CO3 modification is more significant for improving the denitrification and desulfurization capacity. When the unmodified activated coke synergistically adsorbs SO2 and NO, there is a competitive adsorption between NO and SO2. However, when the activated coke modified with K2CO3 solution and NH3 synergistically adsorbs SO2 and NO, both have a promoting effect. After the adsorption of NH3-modified activated coke, CaSO4 and Na2SO4 crystals will appear. K2SO4 will exist after the adsorption of activated coke modified with K2CO3 solution.

Abstract:Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system can efficiently remove NOx in coal-fired power plant, while raise SO3 concentration in the flue gas. Alkaline sorbent injection is a major approach to remove SO3. Experiments were conducted to study the SO3 absorption performance of alkaline sorbent. The SO3 absorption performance of the three alkaline sorbents was Na2CO3 > Ca(OH)(2) approximate to Mg(OH)(2). The ratio of SO3 absorption rate to SO2 absorption rate for Na2CO3 increased with the increasing temperature. The key parameters on the SO3 absorption performance of Na2CO3 were studied. The SO3 absorption by Na2CO3 was increased by 72.7% with increasing temperature from 150 degrees C to 300 degrees C, and the temperature had little influence on SO3 absorption above 300 degrees C. The increasing SO3 concentration and decreasing particle size of Na2CO3 enhanced SO(3 )absorption. However, when the average particle diameter was less than 50 the SO3 absorption was no longer significantly increased. The increasing CO2 concentration slightly reduced the SO3 absorption. After adding vapor into the flue gas, the SO3 absorption was obviously increased below 300 degrees C. The SO3 absorption variation above 300 degrees C was similar to the condition without vapor. When reaction temperature was 300 degrees C or above and reaction time was less than 20 min, external diffusion became the control step for SO3 absorption. On the basis of external diffusion control model, the mass transfer coefficient slightly increased from 1.68 x 10(-3)m/s to 1.75 x 10(-3) m/s when the reaction temperature increased from 300 degrees C to 400 degrees C.

Abstract:A novel Ca-based sorbent was developed to removal SO 2 and NO from flue gas simultaneously. CaO and the fly ash with a mass ratio of 1:4 were hydrated at ambient temperature to make the basic sorbent. NaClO 2 and KMnO 4 were used as oxidants adding to the basic sorbent to enhance the sorbent ability for SO 2/NO capture. The effects of influencing factors on the SO 2/NO capturing capacity of the Ca-based sorbent were investigated in a fixed-bed reactor at low temperature. High mass percent of additives and water content made SO 2/NO capture increase significantly while temperature rise resulted in SO 2/NO capture decreasing. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:A novel sorbent, potassium carbonate impregnated on porous fine alumina, was produced, and its reactive and regenerative properties were evaluated for dry-type simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO from flue gas under stack temperatures, by using a powder-particle fluidized bed (PPFB) with I.D. of 53 mm as the reactor. High removal efficiencies for SO2 and NO were achieved simultaneously An apparent beneficial effect of SO2 on the enhancement of NO removal was found based on a large amount of data. The alumina carrier was successfully regenerated and used repeatedly for the production of fresh sorbent particles. With no ammonia,low temperature, high removal efficiency and no second waste emission as main characteristics, this dry process can be a competitive technology for pollution control of flue gas from power plants in the future.

Abstract:SO3 emissions from coal-fired plants cause equipment corrosion and environmental pollution, which can be alleviated by adsorbent injection. The dynamic adsorption of SO3 by Na2SO3 was studied with a fixed-bed reactor at 250-350 degrees C under simulated flue gas. An obvious competitive reaction of Na2SO3 oxidation by O-2 was found during SO3 adsorption. The conversions of Na2SO3 by SO3 adsorption and by O-2 oxidation all rapidly increased in the initial stage and then slowly increased. The selectivity of SO3 adsorption by Na2SO3 also rapidly increased first and then slowly increased, except at 250 degrees C. It was between 0.06 and 0.12 in the later stage. Decreasing temperature and increasing SO3 concentration increased the SO3 selectivity. Na2SO3 oxidation was also promoted by the increasing SO3 concentration. Pore structure analysis showed that a more porous product layer was formed by the enhanced SO3 adsorption, facilitating the O-2 diffusion. As the product gas of SO3 adsorption, the presence of SO2 in the reactant gas suppressed the forward reaction of Na2SO3 and SO3. Thus, increasing SO2 concentrations weakened SO3 adsorption and decreased the SO3 selectivity. The strong competitive reactions greatly reduced the effective utilization of adsorbents, which should be considered during deSO(3) process design.

Abstract:A dry-desulfurization process using Ca(OH)2/fly ash sorbent and a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) was developed. Its aim was to achieve high SO2 removal efficiency without humidification and production of CaSO4 as the main byproduct. The CaSO4 produced could be used to treat alkalized soil. An 83% SO2 removal rate was demonstrated, and a byproduct with a high CaSO4 content was produced through baghouse ash. These results indicated that this process could remove SO2 in flue gas with a high efficiency under dry conditions and simultaneously produce soil amendment. It was shown that NO and NO2 enhanced the SO2 removal rate markedly and that NO2 increased the amount of CaSO4 in the final product more than NO. These results confirmed that the significant effects of NO and NO2 on the SO2 removal rate were due to chain reactions that occurred under favorable conditions. The amount of baghouse ash produced increased as the reaction progressed, indicating that discharge of unreacted Ca(OH)2 from the reactor was suppressed. Hence, unreacted Ca(OH)2 had a long residence time in the CFB, resulting in a high SO2 removal rate. It was also found that 350 degrees C is the optimum reaction temperature for dry desulfurization in the range tested (320-380 degrees C).

Abstract:A method combining Na2SO3 assisted electrochemical reduction and direct electrochemical reduction using Fe(II)(EDTA) solution was proposed to simultaneously remove NOx and SO2 from flue gas. Activated carbon was used as catalyst to accelerate the process. This new system features (a) direct conversion of NOx and SO2 to harmless N2 and SO4(2-); (b) fast regeneration of Fe(II)(EDTA); (c) minimum use of chemical reagents; and (d) recovery of the reduction by-product (Na2SO4). Fe(II)(EDTA) solution was continuously recycled and reused during entire process, and no harmful waste was generated. Approximately 99% NOx and 98% SO2 were removed under the optimal condition. The stability test showed that the system operation was reliable.
A Dry Process for Simultaneous Removal of SO2 and NO from Flue Gas of Power Plants by Using a Gas-Solid-Solid Fluidized Bed

Abstract:A novel dry gassolidsolid fluidized bed process was adopted for simultaneous high removal of SO2 and NO from flue gas of power plants combusting coal. The fine sorbent employed was porous alumina particles coated with potassium carbonate. Under different operation temperatures, the fine sorbent was continuously fed into a fluidized bed of silica sand where sorption reaction between the sorbent particles and model flue gas took place. Removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO were compared under different operation parameters including bed temperature, sorbent kind and size, mole ratios of potassium over SO2 and/or NO. The regeneration of alumina carrier were also investigated. It was found that 100% of SO2 and 92% of NO can be removed simultaneously with no ammonia injection under the typical temperature range of flue gas before entering stacks in a power plant. A great amount of data showed a strong beneficial effect of SO2 in the flue gas on NO removal. Porous alumina carrier can be effectively regenerated with distilled water for repeated sorbent preparation and further use in reaction.

Abstract:Injecting calcium hydroxide powder into the flue gas is an effective strategy for SO 3 removal. However, commercial calcium hydroxide has several disadvantages, including large particle size, low efficiency, and unsuitability for excessive grinding. In this work, sub-micron calcium hydroxide was synthesized by an inhibition method and its performance for SO 3 removal from flue gas was investigated on a pilot-scale platform (120 Nm 3 /h). When the concentration of sodium alginate solution was 100 mg/L, the average particle size of calcium hydroxide decreased from 13.66 μm to 0.84 μm, which improved the SO 3 removal (92.1 %) and conversion of the absorbent. The results of the fixed-bed experiments indicate that the absorption kinetics of the reaction is consistent with the Bangham model. In addition, density functional theory verifies that calcium hydroxide captures SO 3 by chemisorption. The AFM image shows that the calcium sulfate whiskers produced during the reaction grow like parallel peaks on the adsorbent surface. The calculations suggest that the driving force for SO 3 adsorption originates from Ca-p orbital (Ca(OH) 2 ) and O-s orbital (SO 3 ) hybridization. This study complements the island growth mechanism for gas-solid two-phase reactions and provides an effective method for removing SO 3 from flue gas in coal-fired power plants. In addition, it will provide an important reference for the development of submicron adsorbents.

Abstract:The elimination of SO 2 pollutants from coal fired flue gas through using industrial solid waste as absorbent has received widespread attention. Herein, a novel process on SO 2 purification by employing coal gangue slurry is proposed for the first time. The effects of different operating variables on SO 2 absorption efficiency were studied, indicating that coal gangue slurry has superior desulfurization performance. The desulfurization capacity can reach up to 33.12 g SO 2 /L coal gangue slurry. In addition, the desulfurization active substances and products are determined based on the analysis of the composition of gas, liquid and solid phase substances during the desulfurization process. It is found that the Fe 3+ dissolved from coal gangue have a significant effect on the efficient absorption of SO 2 . The HSO 3 − formed by the dissolution of SO 2 in water can be rapidly converted into SO 3 •− radicals under the catalytic action of trace Fe 3+ , thereby inducing active oxidizing substances, such as SO 5 •− , SO 4 •− , HO 2 • and HO • , to promote the transformation of SO 2 towards SO 4 2− . Subsequently, SO 2 removal pathways are revealed. This result has important implications for the industrial application of coal gangue slurry desulfurization technology.

Experimental Study on in Situ Preparation of Supported Sorbent for Moderate Temperature CFB-FGD

Abstract:Supported sorbent for flue gas desulfurization was prepared by a process of hydrating and drying a mixture of carrier particles and lumps of CaO in previous studies. Supported sorbent achieves high desulfurization efficiency in a Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) reactor at moderate temperature. However, the preparation process is complicated, which makes industrial application difficult. In this study, supported sorbent is prepared in situ in a CFB reactor by a coating process, in combination with SO2 removal. The experiments are conducted in a pilot-scale CFB experimental facility at 700-750 degrees C. The influence of operation parameters on supported sorbent formation and desulfurization efficiency is tested, including bed inventory, sprayer location, and spray method. The results show that the present process achieves 85.3% desulfurization efficiency with a Ca/S molar ratio of 2.01 when the bed inventory is 25 kg. This result is approximately 10 times higher than that of a zero bed inventory. The scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer results show that the supported sorbent forms when fine Ca(OH)(2) particles in the lime slurry adhere to the bed material surface. The residence time of the supported sorbent in the CFB reactor is significantly longer than that of the fine Ca(OH)(2) particles. The adhesion efficiency is influenced by the spray location and spray method. The desulfurization performance of the supported sorbent prepared by the original hydration and drying method is also tested. The desulfurization efficiency is 25-35% higher than the present process because there is better adhesion in the original method than the in situ method. But the process complexity is significantly reduced when using the present process. The present process is a substantial attempt toward the application of supported sorbent.
Removal of NO and SO_2 from Flue Gas by Wet Scrubbing Using Aqueous NaClO Solution

Abstract:Experiments on DeNOx were conducted in a lab-scale bubbling reactor with NaClO as the oxidant and sorbent.We studied the main factors influencing NO conversion efficiency,and propose a reaction mechanism of simultaneous removal of NO and SO2 by NaClO.The results indicated that initial pH was a significant factor in the denitrification process.The NO conversion efficiency was improved by increasing the NaClO concentration and the inlet NO concentration,while high solution temperature was not beneficial for the removal of NO.At pH 5.5,NaClO was an excellent scrubbing medium for the absorption of NO.The best absorption efficiency among the individual DeNOx experiments was 43.24%.The results of the combined DeSOx/DeNOx experiments showed that SO2 could improve the absorption of NO2,and the best DeNOx and DeSOx efficiencies reached 53.03% and 100%,respectively.Thus,NaClO could be an excellent oxidant and sorbent for simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO.

Abstract:In order to promote the SO_2 reduction efficiency from flue gas, the pilot-scale experiments of a staged sorbent injection process combined with air-staged combustion pattern are conducted in a 3.52MW pulverized-coal downshot furnace. It is found that when calcium-based sorbents are simply injected into the upper furnace at Ca/S=2,a low SO_2 reduction efficiency of 26.5% is obtained. When a portion of sorbents are injected by primary air into the combustion zone and others are injected into the upper furnace, the in-furnace desulfurization efficiency is promoted to 41.2% at Ca/S=2 and 71.2% at Ca/S=3.

Abstract:In stationary fluidized beds limestone particles within emulsion phase are subject to chaotically changing (fluctuating) reaction conditions - from oxidizing near the bubble interface and the freeboard to reducing near the burning coal particles. Experimental desulphurization and NOx formation trends observed in a laboratory-scale FBC reactor were analyzed by comparison with multicomponent (50 gas-phase, 6 solid-phase species) equilibrium calculations for a Coal/Water/Limestone/Air system. Analysis shows, that the time-averaged atmosphere in the emulsion phase is close to a reducing atmosphere. Sulphur captured as CaS in locally reducing zones improves the limestone sulphation level as well as the thermal stability of desulphurization. The CaS act as a catalyst for the oxidation of NH3 to NO and for the reduction of NO by CO. The addition of limestone increases NOx emissions approximately two times. The catalytic effect of CaO is not pronounced. Experimentally observed sorbent performance is interpreted by supposing a mechanism of sulphation, which leads to the formation of a particle structure with a sulphided (CaS) core and a sulphated (CaSO4) shell. This mechanism would probably explain the difference in NOx emissions performance between stationary and circulating fluidized beds.
