Abstract:In this paper, the global superconvergences of the domain decomposition methods with Lagrangian multiplier and nonmatching grids are proven for solving the second order elliptic boundary value problems. Abstract:In this paper, we study the superconvergence property for the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) and the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) methods for solving one-dimensional time dependent linear conservation laws and convection-diffusion equations. We prove superconvergence towards a particular projection of the exact solution when the upwind flux is used for conservation laws and when the alternating flux is used for convection-diffusion equations. The order of superconvergence for both cases is proved to be $k+\frac{3}{2}$ when piecewise $P^k$ polynomials with $k\geq1$ are used. The proof is valid for arbitrary nonuniform regular meshes and for piecewise $P^k$ polynomials with arbitrary $k\geq1$, improving upon the results in [Y. Cheng and C.-W. Shu, J. Comput. Phys., 227 (2008), pp. 96129627], [Y. Cheng and C.-W. Shu, Computers and Structures, 87 (2009), pp. 630641] in which the proof based on Fourier analysis was given only for uniform meshes with periodic boundary condition and piecewise $P^1$ polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper, we study superconvergence properties of the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) methods for solving nonlinear convection-diffusion equations in one space dimension. The main technicality is an elaborate estimate to terms involving projection errors. By introducing a new projection and constructing some correction functions, we prove the $$(2k+1)$$ th order superconvergence for the cell averages and the numerical flux in the discrete $$L^2$$ norm with polynomials of degree $$k\ge 1$$ , no matter whether the flow direction $$f'(u)$$ changes or not. Superconvergence of order $$k +2$$ ( $$k +1$$ ) is obtained for the LDG error (its derivative) at interior right (left) Radau points, and the convergence order for the error derivative at Radau points can be improved to $$k+2$$ when the direction of the flow doesn’t change. Finally, a supercloseness result of order $$k+2$$ towards a special Gauss–Radau projection of the exact solution is shown. The superconvergence analysis can be extended to the generalized numerical fluxes and the mixed boundary conditions. All theoretical findings are confirmed by numerical experiments.

Abstract:This paper investigates superconvergence properties of the local discontinuous Galerkin methods with generalized alternating fluxes for one-dimensional linear convection-diffusion equations. By the technique of constructing some special correction functions, we prove the $(2k+1)$th order superconvergence for the cell averages, and the numerical traces in the discrete $L^2$ norm. In addition, superconvergence of order $k+2$ and $k+1$ are obtained for the error and its derivative at generalized Radau points. All theoretical findings are confirmed by numerical experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the superconvergence of the semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for linear hyperbolic equations in one spatial dimension. The asymptotic errors in cell averages, downwind point values, and the postprocessed solution are derived for the initial discretization by Gaussian projection (for periodic boundary condition) or Cao projection Cao et al. (SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 5 , 2555–2573 (2014)) (for Dirichlet boundary condition). We proved that the error constant in the superconvergence of order for DG methods based on upwind-biased fluxes depends on the parity of the order k . The asymptotic errors are demonstrated by various numerical experiments for scalar and vector hyperbolic equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we concentrate on the superconvergence of the local discontinuous Galerkin method with generalized numerical fluxes for one-dimensional linear time-dependent fourth-order equations. The adjustable numerical viscosity of the generalized numerical fluxes is beneficial for long time simulations with a slower error growth. By using generalized Gauss--Radau projections and correction functions together with a suitable numerical initial condition, we derive, for polynomials of degree $k$, $(2k+1)$th order superconvergence for the numerical flux and cell averages, $(k+2)$th order superconvergence at generalized Radau points, and $(k+1)$th order for error derivative at generalized Radau points. Moreover, a supercloseness result of order $(k+2)$ is established between the generalized Gauss--Radau projection and the numerical solution. Superconvergence analysis of mixed boundary conditions is also given. Equations with discontinuous initial condition and nonlinear convection term are numerically investigated, illustrating that the conclusions are valid for more general cases.

Abstract:Local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) methods are popular for convection–diffusion equations. In LDG methods, we introduce an auxiliary variable p to represent the derivative of the primary variable u, and solve them on the same mesh. In this paper, we will introduce a new LDG method, and solve u and p on different meshes. The stability and error estimates will be investigated. The new algorithm is more flexible and flux-free for pure diffusion equations without introducing additional computational cost compared with the original LDG methods, since it is not necessary to solve each equation twice. Moreover, it is possible to construct third-order maximum-principle-preserving schemes based on the new algorithm. However, one cannot anticipate optimal accuracy in some special cases. In this paper, we will find out the reason for accuracy degeneration which further leads to several alternatives to obtain optimal convergence rates. Finally, several numerical experiments will be given to demonstrate the stability and optimal accuracy of the new algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, a second-order hyperbolic equation is solved by a two-grid algorithm combined with the expanded mixed finite element method. The error estimate of the expanded mixed finite element method with discrete-time scheme is demonstrated. Moreover, we present a two-grid method and analyze its convergence. It is shown that the algorithm can achieve asymptotically optimal approximation as long as the mesh sizes satisfy . Finally, some numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

Moreover, we prove that the gradient of the DG solution is superconvergent with a rate of (k+1)th order at all interior left Radau points; and the function value approximation is superconvergent at all right Radau points with a rate of (k+2)th order. Numerical experiments indicate that the aforementioned superconvergence rates are sharp.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the superconvergence properties of an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian discontinuous Galerkin (ALE-DG) method with approximations to one-dimensional linear hyperbolic equations. The ALE-DG method is a mesh moving method; we need to deal with the new difficulties brought by the time-dependent test function space and grid velocity field. Since the time derivative cannot commute with the space projections for the ALE-DG method, we will introduce the material derivative in our analysis. With the help of the scaling argument and material derivative, we build a special interpolation function by constructing the correction functions and prove that the numerical solution is superclose to the interpolation function in the L-2-norm. The order of the superconvergence is 2k + 1 when piecewise polynomials of degree at most k are used. We also rigorously prove a (2k + 1)th-order superconvergence rate for the domain and cell average and at the downwind points in the maximal and average norm. Furthermore, we prove that the function value approximation is superconvergent with a rate k + 2 at the right Radau points and a superconvergence rate k + 1 for the derivative approximation at all interior left Radau points. All theoretical findings are confirmed by numerical experiments.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with superconvergence properties of the direct discontinuous Galerkin (DDG) method for two-dimensional nonlinear convection–diffusion equations. To copy with the complexity and difficulty caused by the nonlinear term, we utilize the method of Taylor expansion and correction idea to achieve our superconvergence goal. Specifically, we first adopt Taylor expansion to decompose the error into two parts: a high-order nonlinear term and a lower-order linear term. Then by using the idea of correction function for the linear term, a high order error bound is obtained. By doing so, a unified analysis of DDG method for general nonlinear problems is finally established. We prove that, for any piecewise tensor-product polynomials of degree k≥2 , the DDG solution is superconvergent at nodes and Lobatto points, with an order of O(h2k) and O(hk+2) , respectively. Moreover, superconvergence properties for the derivative approximation are also studied and the superconvergence points are identified at Gauss points, with an order of O(hk+1) . Numerical experiments are presented to confirm the sharpness of all the theoretical findings.

Abstract:We consider the convergence theory of adaptive multigrid methods for secondorder elliptic problems and Maxwell's equations. The multigrid algorithm only performs pointwise Gauss-Seidel relaxations on new degrees of freedom and their "immediate" neighbors. In the context of lowest order conforming finite element approximations, we present a unified proof for the convergence of adaptive multigrid V-cycle algorithms. The theory applies to any hierarchical tetrahedral meshes with uniformly bounded shape-regularity measures. The convergence rates for both problems are uniform with respect to the number of mesh levels and the number of degrees of freedom. We demonstrate our convergence theory by two numerical experiments.

Abstract:Recently, nonlocal models attract the wide interest of scientists. They mainly come from two applied scientific fields: peridynamics and anomalous diffusion. Even though the matrices of the algebraic equation corresponding to the nonlocal models are usually Toeplitz (denote a(0) as the principal diagonal element, a(1) as the trailing diagonal element, etc). There are still some differences for the models in these two fields. For the model of anomalous diffusion, a(0)/a(1) is uniformly bounded; most of the time, a(0)/a(1) of the model for peridynamics is unbounded as the step size h tends to zero. Based on the uniform boundedness of a(0)/a(1), the convergence of the two-grid method is well established [R. H. Chan, Q.-S. Chang, and H.-W. Sun, SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 19 (1998), pp. 516-529; H. Pang and H. Sun, J. Comput. Phys., 231 (2012), pp. 693-703; M. H. Chen, Y. T. Wang, X. Cheng, and W. H. Deng, BIT, 54 (2014), pp. 623-647]. This paper provides the detailed proof of the convergence of the two-grid method for the nonlocal model of peridynamics. Some special cases of the full multigrid and the V-cycle multigrid methods are also discussed. The numerical experiments are performed to verify the convergence.

Abstract:Conjugate gradient methods are typically used to solve large scale unconstrained optimization problems. Two descent conjugate gradient methods are proposed,and the global convergence with standard Wolfe conditions is proved. The numerical results show that the methods are efficient for the given test problems.
