Abstract:In this paper, the finite element approximation of the Signorini problem is studied by using Lagrange multiplier methods with piecewise constant elements. Optimal error bounds are obtained and iterative algorithm and its convergence axe given. Furthermore, global superconvergences are proved.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a new residual-based pointwise a posteriori error estimator of the quadratic finite element method for the Signorini problem. The supremum norm a posteriori error estimates enable us to locate the singularities locally to control the pointwise errors. In the analysis the discrete counterpart of contact force density is constructed suitably to exhibit the desired sign property. We employ a priori estimates for the standard Green's matrix for the divergence type operator and introduce the upper and lower barriers functions by appropriately modifying the discrete solution. Finally, we present numerical experiments that illustrate the excellent performance of the proposed error estimator.

Abstract:The unique solvability and error analysis of the original Lagrange multiplier approach proposed in [8] for gradient flows is studied in this paper. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition that must be satisfied for the nonlinear algebraic equation arising from the original Lagrange multiplier approach to admit a unique solution in the neighborhood of its exact solution, and propose a modified Lagrange multiplier approach so that the computation can continue even if the aforementioned condition is not satisfied. Using Cahn-Hilliard equation as an example, we prove rigorously the unique solvability and establish optimal error estimates of a second-order Lagrange multiplier scheme assuming this condition and that the time step is sufficient small. We also present numerical results to demonstrate that the modified Lagrange multiplier approach is much more robust and can use much larger time step than the original Lagrange multiplier approach.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) approach, the superconvergence error analysis is investigated for the time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations. In which, an equivalent system of the Navier–Stokes equations with three variables and a fully-discrete scheme is developed with semi-implicit Euler discretization for the temporal direction and low-order bilinear-constant finite element discretization for the spatial direction, respectively. With the help of the high-precision estimations of the bilinear-constant finite element pair on the rectangular meshes, the superclose error estimates for velocity in H1 -norm and pressure in L2 -norm are obtained by treating the trilinear term carefully and skillfully. The global superconvergence results are also derived in terms of a simple and efficient interpolation post-processing technique. Finally, some numerical results are provided to demonstrate the correctness of the theoretical analysis.

Duality based error control for the Signorini problem

Abstract:In this paper we study the a posteriori bounds for a conforming piecewise linear finite element approximation of the Signorini problem. We prove new rigorous a posteriori estimates of residual type in $L^{p}$, for $p \in (4,\infty)$ in two spatial dimensions. This new analysis treats the positive and negative parts of the discretisation error separately, requiring a novel sign- and bound-preserving interpolant, which is shown to have optimal approximation properties. The estimates rely on the sharp dual stability results on the problem in $W^{2,(4 - \varepsilon)/3}$ for any $\varepsilon \ll 1$. We summarise extensive numerical experiments aimed at testing the robustness of the estimator to validate the theory.

Abstract:Superconvergence error analysis is investigated of a mixed finite element method (MFEM) for the time-dependent natural convection problem. The backward Euler scheme is adopted for the discrete in time, while the Bernadi-Rangel element is used to approximate the velocity u and the pressure p , and the bilinear element to the temperature T in space, respectively. Combined with the characters of the chosen elements and skillful techniques, the superclose results of order O(h2+τ) for u,T in the H1 -norm and p in L2 -norm are deduced rigorously, where h is the subdivision scale and τ , the time step. Further, the global superconvergence results are obtained through the interpolation postprocessing technique. We mention that in the high accuracy results obtained in this paper, the restriction between the h and τ is removed by the space-time splitting skill. Finally, numerical tests are also established to verify the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, an improved superconvergence analysis is presented for both the Crouzeix-Raviart element and the Morley element. The main idea of the analysis is to employ a discrete Helmholtz decomposition of the difference between the canonical interpolation and the finite element solution for the first-order mixed Raviart-Thomas element and the mixed Hellan-Herrmann-Johnson element, respectively. This in particular allows for proving a full one-order superconvergence result for these two mixed finite elements. Finally, a full one-order superconvergence result of both the Crouzeix-Raviart element and the Morley element follows from their special relations with the first-order mixed Raviart-Thomas element and the mixed Hellan-Herrmann-Johnson element respectively. Those superconvergence results are also extended to mildly structured meshes.

Abstract:We investigate two penalty approaches for the Signorini problem in the mixed form. The well-posedness theory has been established for the two mixed penalty problems in both the continuous and discrete sense. For the continuous case, we obtain the error of the penalty for both two approaches. We also study the error estimates of the discrete mixed penalty problems, which depend on the mesh size and the penalty parameter. Based on the two penalty approaches, we design two algorithms and show their convergence. Several numerical experiments are carried out to confirm the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, a linearized mass and energy conservative mixed finite element method (MFEM) is proposed for solving the nonlinear Klein–Gordon–Schrödinger equations. Optimal error estimates without grid‐ratio condition are derived by some rigorous analysis and an error splitting technique, that is, one is the temporal error which is only τ‐dependent and the other is the spatial error which is only h‐dependent. Furthermore, the superclose results are obtained by using the idea of combination of interpolation and projection. Besides, a so‐called "lifting" approach also play an important role to obtain the superclose results. With the above achievements, the global superconvergent properties are deduced through the interpolated post processing operators. Finally, three numerical examples are given to validate the convergence order, unconditional stability, mass, and energy conservation.

Abstract:In this paper, on the basis of a (Fenchel) duality theory on the continuous level, we derive an $\textit{a posteriori}$ error identity for arbitrary conforming approximations of the primal formulation and the dual formulation of the scalar Signorini problem. In addition, on the basis of a (Fenchel) duality theory on the discrete level, we derive an $\textit{a priori}$ error identity that applies to the approximation of the primal formulation using the Crouzeix-Raviart element and to the approximation of the dual formulation using the Raviart-Thomas element, and leads to quasi-optimal error decay rates without imposing additional assumptions on the contact set and in arbitrary space dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the superconvergence of the semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for linear hyperbolic equations in one spatial dimension. The asymptotic errors in cell averages, downwind point values, and the postprocessed solution are derived for the initial discretization by Gaussian projection (for periodic boundary condition) or Cao projection Cao et al. (SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 5 , 2555–2573 (2014)) (for Dirichlet boundary condition). We proved that the error constant in the superconvergence of order for DG methods based on upwind-biased fluxes depends on the parity of the order k . The asymptotic errors are demonstrated by various numerical experiments for scalar and vector hyperbolic equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the superconvergence properties of an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian discontinuous Galerkin (ALE-DG) method with approximations to one-dimensional linear hyperbolic equations. The ALE-DG method is a mesh moving method; we need to deal with the new difficulties brought by the time-dependent test function space and grid velocity field. Since the time derivative cannot commute with the space projections for the ALE-DG method, we will introduce the material derivative in our analysis. With the help of the scaling argument and material derivative, we build a special interpolation function by constructing the correction functions and prove that the numerical solution is superclose to the interpolation function in the L-2-norm. The order of the superconvergence is 2k + 1 when piecewise polynomials of degree at most k are used. We also rigorously prove a (2k + 1)th-order superconvergence rate for the domain and cell average and at the downwind points in the maximal and average norm. Furthermore, we prove that the function value approximation is superconvergent with a rate k + 2 at the right Radau points and a superconvergence rate k + 1 for the derivative approximation at all interior left Radau points. All theoretical findings are confirmed by numerical experiments.

Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to apply the conforming bilinear finite element to solve the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). Firstly, the stability and convergence for time discrete scheme are proved. Secondly, through a new estimate approach, the optimal order error estimates and superclose properties in H 1-norm are obtained with Backward Euler (B-E) and Crank-Nicolson (C-N) fully-discrete schemes, the global superconvergence results are deduced with the help of interpolation postprocessing technique. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, the superconvergence error analysis of an energy-conserving Galerkin fully discrete scheme is proposed and investigated for the two-dimensional sine-Gordon equation. The unique solvability of the numerical scheme as well as the energy conservation are studied firstly. Then, based on the special property of the bilinear element on the rectangular mesh and the superclose estimate between interpolation and Ritz projection of the exact solution in H1 -norm, the global superconvergence result in H1 -norm is obtained in terms of a post-processing technique. Finally, numerical results are provided to confirm the energy conservation and superconvergence properties.

Abstract:A complex variable boundary point interpolation method (CVBPIM) is presented for numerical analysis of the nonlinear Signorini problem. To reduce the computational cost and to improve the stability of the point interpolation method, a complex variable point interpolation method (CVPIM) is developed to construct meshless shape functions with interpolation properties. By using a projection technique to deal with the nonlinear inequality boundary conditions, and combining boundary integral equations with the CVPIM to establish discrete linear algebraic systems, the CVBPIM is an easy-to-implement and boundary-only meshless method for nonlinear Signorini problems. Numerical results are presented to show the accuracy and efficiency of the method.
