Abstract:Presently, a tetrahedral mesher based on the Delaunay triangulation approach may outperform a tetrahedral improver based on local smoothing and flip operations by nearly one order in terms of computing time. Parallelization is a feasible way to speed up the improver and enable it to handle large-scale meshes. In this study, a novel domain decomposition approach is proposed for parallel mesh improvement. It analyses the dual graph of the input mesh to build an inter-domain boundary that avoids small dihedral angles and poorly shaped faces. Consequently, the parallel improver can fit this boundary without compromising the mesh quality. Meanwhile, the new method does not involve any inter-processor communications and therefore runs very efficiently. A parallel pre-processing pipeline that combines the proposed improver and existing parallel surface and volume meshers can prepare a quality mesh containing hundreds of millions of elements in minutes. Experiments are presented to show that the developed system is robust and applicable to models of a complication level experienced in industry.

Abstract:Our research focuses on the development of domain decomposition preconditioners tailored for second-order elliptic partial differential equations. Our approach addresses two major challenges simultaneously: i) effectively handling coefficients with high-contrast and multiscale properties, and ii) accommodating irregular domains in the original problem, the coarse mesh, and the subdomain partition. The robustness of our preconditioners is crucial for real-world applications, such as the efficient and accurate modeling of subsurface flow in porous media and other important domains. The core of our method lies in the construction of a suitable partition of unity functions and coarse spaces utilizing local spectral information. Leveraging these components, we implement a two-level additive Schwarz preconditioner. We demonstrate that the condition number of the preconditioned systems is bounded with a bound that is independent of the contrast. Our claims are further substantiated through selected numerical experiments, which confirm the robustness of our preconditioners.

Unified geometric multigrid algorithm for hybridized high-order finite element methods

Abstract:We consider a standard elliptic partial differential equation and propose a geometric multigrid algorithm based on Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) maps for hybridized high-order finite element methods. The proposed unified approach is applicable to any locally conservative hybridized finite element method including multinumerics with different hybridized methods in different parts of the domain. For these methods, the linear system involves only the unknowns residing on the mesh skeleton, and constructing intergrid transfer operators is therefore not trivial. The key to our geometric multigrid algorithm is the physics-based energy-preserving intergrid transfer operators which depend only on the fine scale DtN maps. Thanks to these operators, we completely avoid upscaling of parameters and no information regarding subgrid physics is explicitly required on coarse meshes. Moreover, our algorithm is agglomeration-based and can straightforwardly handle unstructured meshes. We perform extensive numerical studies with hybridized mixed methods, hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method, weak Galerkin method, and a hybridized version of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods on a range of elliptic problems including subsurface flow through highly heterogeneous porous media. We compare the performance of different smoothers and analyze the effect of stabilization parameters on the scalability of the multigrid algorithm.

A grid-overlay finite difference method for the fractional Laplacian on arbitrary bounded domains

Abstract:A grid-overlay finite difference method is proposed for the numerical approximation of the fractional Laplacian on arbitrary bounded domains. The method uses an unstructured simplicial mesh and an overlay uniform grid for the underlying domain and constructs the approximation based on a uniform-grid finite difference approximation and a data transfer from the unstructured mesh to the uniform grid. The method takes full advantages of both uniform-grid finite difference approximation in efficient matrix-vector multiplication via the fast Fourier transform and unstructured meshes for complex geometries and mesh adaptation. It is shown that its stiffness matrix is similar to a symmetric and positive definite matrix and thus invertible if the data transfer has full column rank and positive column sums. Piecewise linear interpolation is studied as a special example for the data transfer. It is proved that the full column rank and positive column sums of linear interpolation is guaranteed if the spacing of the uniform grid is smaller than or equal to a positive bound proportional to the minimum element height of the unstructured mesh. Moreover, a sparse preconditioner is proposed for the iterative solution of the resulting linear system for the homogeneous Dirichlet problem of the fractional Laplacian. Numerical examples demonstrate that the new method has similar convergence behavior as existing finite difference and finite element methods and that the sparse preconditioning is effective. Furthermore, the new method can readily be incorporated with existing mesh adaptation strategies. Numerical results obtained by combining with the so-called MMPDE moving mesh method are also presented.

Abstract:One of the important aspects of IsoGeometric Analysis (IGA) is the strong link between Computer Aided Design and analysis. Two of IGA'a major challenge are the assembly of patches (Constructive Solid Geometry geometries made of Boolean primitives) and local refinement. In the present work we apply the Additive Schwarz Domain Decomposition on overlapping domains. To leverage the power of IGA we consider non matching meshes to solve PDEs on CSG assemblies. As a side effect also we deal with local refinement . As a first step we study a collection of simple two domains problems, using the software package GeoPDEs, all of them converged rapidly, even on very distorted domains. For local refinement we implement a Chimera type of zooming together with ASDDM iterations, and here again we get very attractive results. A last effect is that the additive methods are naturally parallelizable and thus can extend to large 3D problems. We give some examples of computations on multi-patch bodies. This new implementation of the DD methods brings many interesting problems such as: the definition of boundary conditions on trimmed patches, choice of blending operators on the intersections , optimization of the overlap size, choice of preconditioning to guarantee convergence ( as we do not have a maximum principle here.)

Abstract:Internal interfaces in a domain could exist as a material defect or they can appear due to propagations of cracks. Discretization of such geometries and solution of the contact problem on the internal interfaces can be computationally challenging. We employ an unfitted Finite Element (FE) framework for the discretization of the domains and develop a tailored, globally convergent, and efficient multigrid method for solving contact problems on the internal interfaces. In the unfitted FE methods, structured background meshes are used and only the underlying finite element spaces are modified to incorporate the discontinuities. The non-penetration conditions on the embedded interfaces of the domains are discretized using the method of Lagrange multipliers. We reformulate the arising variational inequality problem as a quadratic minimization problem with linear inequality constraints. Our multigrid method can solve such problems by employing a tailored multilevel hierarchy of the FE spaces and a novel approach for tackling the discretized non-penetration conditions. We employ pseudo-L2 projection- based transfer operators to construct a hierarchy of nested FE spaces from the hierarchy of non-nested meshes. The essential component of our multigrid method is a technique that decouples the linear constraints using an orthogonal transformation. The decoupled constraints are handled by a modified variant of the projected Gauss–Seidel method, which we employ as a smoother in the multigrid method. These components of the multigrid method allow us to enforce linear constraints locally and ensure the global convergence. We will demonstrate the robustness, efficiency, and level independent convergence property of the proposed method for Signorini’s problem and two-body contact problems

Abstract:We propose a new numerical domain decomposition method for solving elliptic equations on compact Riemannian manifolds. One advantage of this method is its ability to bypass the need for global triangulations or grids on the manifolds. Additionally, it features a highly parallel iterative scheme. To verify its efficacy, we conduct numerical experiments on some $4$-dimensional manifolds without and with boundary.

There are still some differences for the models in these two fields. For the model of anomalous diffusion, a0/a1 is uniformly bounded; most of the time, a0/a1 of the model for peridyanmics is unbounded as the stepsize h tends to zero. Based on the uniform boundedness of a0/a1, the convergence of the two-grid method is well established [Chan, Chang, and Sun, SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 19 (1998), pp. 516--529; Pang and Sun, J. Comput. Phys., 231 (2012), pp. 693--703; Chen, Wang, Cheng, and Deng, BIT, 54 (2014), pp. 623--647]. This paper provides the detailed proof of the convergence of the two-grid method for the nonlocal model of peridynamics. Some special cases of the full multigrid and the V-cycle multigrid are also discussed. The numerical experiments are performed to verify the convergence.

Abstract:We proposed an efficient and robust algorithm to solve the steady Euler equations on unstructured grids. The new algorithm is a Newton-iteration method in which every iteration step is a linear multigrid method using block lower-upper symmetric Gauss-Seidel (LU-SGS) iteration as its smoother. To regularize the Jacobian matrix of Newtoniteration, we adopted a local residual dependent regularization, as the replacement of the standard time-stepping relaxation technique based on the local CFL number. The proposed method can be extended to high order approximations and three spatial dimensions in a nature way. The solver was tested on a sequence of benchmark problems on both quasi-uniform and local adaptive meshes. Fruitful numerical results illustrated the efficiency and robustness of our algorithm.

Abstract:Two non-overlapping domain decomposition methods are presented for the mixed finite element formulation of linear elasticity with weakly enforced stress symmetry. The methods utilize either displacement or normal stress Lagrange multiplier to impose interface continuity of normal stress or displacement, respectively. By eliminating the interior subdomain variables, the global problem is reduced to an interface problem, which is then solved by an iterative procedure. The condition number of the resulting algebraic interface problem is analyzed for both methods. A multiscale mortar mixed finite element method for the problem of interest on non-matching multiblock grids is also studied. It uses a coarse scale mortar finite element space on the non-matching interfaces to approximate the trace of the displacement and impose weakly the continuity of normal stress. A priori error analysis is performed. It is shown that, with appropriate choice of the mortar space, optimal convergence on the fine scale is obtained for the stress, displacement, and rotation, as well as some superconvergence for the displacement. Computational results are presented in confirmation of the theory of all proposed methods.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the penalty Robin-Robin domain decomposition methods (DDMs), proposed by us for the solution of unilateral multibody contact problems of elasticity. These DDMs are based on the penalty method for variational inequalities and some stationary and nonstationary iterative methods for nonlinear variational equations. The main result of the paper is that we give the mathematical justification of proposed DDMs and prove theorems on their convergence. We also investigate the numerical efficiency of these methods using the finite element approximations.

A-posteriori-steered $p$-robust multigrid and domain decomposition methods with optimal step-sizes for mixed finite element discretizations of elliptic problems

Abstract:In this work, we develop algebraic solvers for linear systems arising from the discretization of second-order elliptic problems by saddle-point mixed finite element methods of arbitrary polynomial degree $p \ge 0$. We present a multigrid and a two-level domain decomposition approach in two or three space dimensions, which are steered by their respective a posteriori estimators of the algebraic error. First, we extend the results of [A. Miraçi, J. Papež, and M. Vohralík, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 43 (2021), S117--S145] to the mixed finite element setting. Extending the multigrid procedure itself is rather natural. To obtain analogous theoretical results, however, a multilevel stable decomposition of the velocity space is needed. In two space dimensions, we can treat the velocity space as the curl of a stream-function space, for which the previous results apply. In three space dimensions, we design a novel stable decomposition by combining a one-level high-order local stable decomposition of [Chaumont-Frelet and Vohralík, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 61 (2023), 1783--1818] and a multilevel lowest-order stable decomposition of [Hiptmair, Wu, and Zheng, Numer. Math. Theory Methods Appl. 5 (2012), 297--332]. This allows us to prove that our multigrid solver contracts the algebraic error at each iteration and, simultaneously, that the associated a posteriori estimator is efficient. A $p$-robust contraction is shown in two space dimensions. Next, we use this multilevel methodology to define a two-level domain decomposition method where the subdomains consist of overlapping patches of coarse-level elements sharing a common coarse-level vertex. We again establish a ($p$-robust) contraction of the solver and efficiency of the a posteriori estimator. Numerical results presented both for the multigrid approach and the domain decomposition method confirm the theoretical findings.

Reduced Lagrange multiplier approach for non-matching coupling of mixed-dimensional domains

Abstract:Many physical problems involving heterogeneous spatial scales, such as the flow through fractured porous media, the study of fiber-reinforced materials, or the modeling of the small circulation in living tissues -- just to mention a few examples -- can be described as coupled partial differential equations defined in domains of heterogeneous dimensions that are embedded into each other. This formulation is a consequence of geometric model reduction techniques that transform the original problems defined in complex three-dimensional domains into more tractable ones. The definition and the approximation of coupling operators suitable for this class of problems is still a challenge. We develop a general mathematical framework for the analysis and the approximation of partial differential equations coupled by non-matching constraints across different dimensions, focusing on their enforcement using Lagrange multipliers. In this context, we address in abstract and general terms the well-posedness, stability, and robustness of the problem with respect to the smallest characteristic length of the embedded domain. We also address the numerical approximation of the problem and we discuss the inf-sup stability of the proposed numerical scheme for some representative configuration of the embedded domain. The main message of this work is twofold: from the standpoint of the theory of mixed-dimensional problems, we provide general and abstract mathematical tools to formulate coupled problems across dimensions. From the practical standpoint of the numerical approximation, we show the interplay between the mesh characteristic size, the dimension of the Lagrange multiplier space, and the size of the inclusion in representative configurations interesting for applications. The latter analysis is complemented with illustrative numerical examples.

Domain Decomposition Methods for the Monge-Ampère equation

Abstract:We introduce a new overlapping Domain Decomposition Method (DDM) to solve the fully nonlinear Monge-Ampère equation. While DDMs have been extensively studied for linear problems, their application to fully nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE) remains limited in the literature. To address this gap, we establish a proof of global convergence of these new iterative algorithms using a discrete comparison principle argument. Several numerical tests are performed to validate the convergence theorem. These numerical experiments involve examples of varying regularity. Computational experiments show that method is efficient, robust, and requires relatively few iterations to converge. The results reveal great potential for DDM methods to lead to highly efficient and parallelizable solvers for large-scale problems that are computationally intractable using existing solution methods.

Abstract:This article deals with the computation of guaranteed lower bounds of the error in the framework of finite element (FE) and domain decomposition (DD) methods. In addition to a fully parallel computation, the proposed lower bounds separate the algebraic error (due to the use of a DD iterative solver) from the discretization error (due to the FE), which enables the steering of the iterative solver by the discretization error. These lower bounds are also used to improve the goal-oriented error estimation in a substructured context. Assessments on 2D static linear mechanic problems illustrate the relevance of the separation of sources of error and the lower bounds' independence from the substructuring. We also steer the iterative solver by an objective of precision on a quantity of interest. This strategy consists in a sequence of solvings and takes advantage of adaptive remeshing and recycling of search directions.

Abstract:A non-intrusive global/local algorithm with non-matching (incompatible) interface is proposed to evaluate the durability of large-scale structures with local nonlinearity both on the basis of local multigrid strategy and the domain decomposition (DD) method, which can serve as an intermediate way to perform analyses of complex structures. The proposed algorithm couples a global linear elastic analysis (on coarse mesh) with a local nonlinear analysis (on fine mesh), which extends the iterative global/local method to treat non-matching partition interfaces. Furthermore, to deal with non-matching interface the framework of localized Lagrange multiplier (LLM) method is introduced, and a feasible but robust data transfer method is established with radial basis function (RBF) interpolation. Aitken’s acceleration method is adopted to increase the convergence rate. The convergence property and accuracy of this non-intrusive algorithm are investigated for a two-dimensional model with different interface geometries and interface node allocations. The effect of reduced integration on the convergence rate is also concerned in verification. Then, it is further verified with a three-dimensional model. Numerical results reveal that this non-intrusive algorithm is robust in the non-matching interface data transfer procedure, which is significant in error control during iterations, and it has good performance in both convergence and accuracy.
