Abstract:AbstractIn 1950 Erdös proved that if $x\equiv2\,036\,812\ (\mo5\,592\,405)$ and $x\equiv3\ (\mo62)$, then $x$ is not of the form $2^n+p$, where $n$ is a non-negative integer and $p$ is a prime. In this note we present a theorem on integers of the form $2^n+cp$, in particular we completely determine all those integers $c$ relatively prime to $5\,592\,405$ such that the residue class $2\,036\,812(\mo5\,592\,405)$ contains integers of the form $2^n+cp$.AMS 2000 Mathematics subject classification: Primary 11P32. Following their basic construction and introducing a new method to avoid a bunch of extra congruences, we are able to prove that if x ≡ 47867742232066880047611079 (mod 66483034025018711639862527490), then x is not of the form±pa±qb where p, q are primes and a, b are nonnegative integers.

This paper utilizes theoretical and computational techniques to answer this question for $k\leq9$. Results from Waring's problem are used throughout to catalogue the sets of such integers. These sets are then considered in a general setting, and several curious properties are established.

Abstract:In 2014, Wang and Cai established the following harmonic congruence for any odd prime [Formula: see text] and positive integer [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] denote the set of positive integers which are prime to [Formula: see text]. In this paper, we obtain an unexpected congruence for distinct odd primes [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and positive integers [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and the necessary and sufficient condition for [Formula: see text] Finally, we raise a conjecture that for [Formula: see text] and odd prime power [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] However, we fail to prove it even for [Formula: see text] with three distinct prime factors.

Abstract:For two relatively prime square-free positive integers $a$ and $b$, we study integers of the form $a p+b P_{2}$ and give a new lower bound for it, where $a p$ and $b P_{2}$ are both square-free, $p$ denotes a prime, and $P_{2}$ has at most two prime factors. We also consider some special cases where $p$ is small, $p$ and $P_2$ are within short intervals, $p$ and $P_2$ are within arithmetical progressions and a Goldbach-type upper bound result. Our new results generalize and improve the previous results.

Abstract:Generalized octagonal numbers are those p8(x)=x(3x−2) with x∈Z. In this paper we show that every positive integer can be written as the sum of four generalized octagonal numbers one of which is odd. This result is similar to Lagrange's theorem on sums of four squares. Moreover, for 35 triples (b,c,d) with 1⩽b⩽c⩽d (including (2,3,4) and (2,4,8)), we prove that any nonnegative integer can be expressed as p8(w)+bp8(x)+cp8(y)+dp8(z) with w,x,y,z∈Z. We also pose several conjectures for further research.

Abstract:In this paper we study practical numbers of some special forms. For any integers b >= 0 and c > 0, we show that if n(2) + bn + c is practical for some integer n > 1, then there are infinitely many nonnegative integers n with n2 + bn + c practical. We also prove that there are infinitely many practical numbers of the form q(4) + 2 with q practical, and that there are infinitely many practical Pythagorean triples (a; b; c) with gcd(a; b; c) = 6 (or gcd(a; b; c) = 4).

Abstract:This paper develops the Mobius inversion formula for the Gaussian integers and Eisenstein's integers, and gives two applications. The first application is to the two-dimensional arithmetic Fourier transform (AFT), which is suitable for parallel processing. The second application is to two-dimensional inverse lattice problems, and is illustrated with the recovery of interatomic potentials from the cohesive energy for monolayer graphite. The paper demonstrates the potential application in the physical science of integral domains other than the standard integers.

Abstract:We characterize algebraic integers which are differences of two Pisot numbers. Each such number must be real and its conjugates over must all lie in the union of the disc and the strip . In particular, we prove that every real algebraic integer whose conjugates over , except possibly for itself, all lie in the disc can always be written as a difference of two Pisot numbers. We also show that a real quadratic algebraic integer with conjugate over is always expressible as a difference of two Pisot numbers except for the cases or when cannot be expressed in that form. A similar complete characterization of all algebraic integers expressible as a difference of two Pisot numbers in terms of the location of their conjugates is given in the case when the degree of is a prime number.

Abstract:In this paper we study representations of natural numbers by weighted sums of powers and pose some new conjectures in this direction.For example,we show that there are essentially only 9 polynomials of the form awh + bxi + cyj + dzk with a,b,c,d positive integers,h,i,j,k ∈ {2,3,4,...} and at most one of h,i,j,k equal to two,for which it seems that each n ∈ N ={0,1,2,...} can be written as awh+bxi+cyj+dzk with w,x,y,z ∈ N.One of our conjectures states that {f(w,x,y,z):w,x,y,z ∈ N} =N whenever f(w,x,y,z) is among the 9 polynomials w2 + x3 + 2y3 + cz3 (c =3,4,5,6),w2 + x3 + 2y3 + dz4 (d =1,3,6),2w2 + x3 + 4y3 + z4 and w2 + x3 + y4 + 2z4.We also conjecture that any integer n ＞ 1 can be written as x4 + y3 + z2 + 2k with x,y,z ∈ N and k ∈ {1,2,3,...}.
