Abstract:Numerical accuracy is quantitatively assessed in conjunction with the application of four “equivalent” spherical approximations in the computation of the optical properties of small aggregate soot particles. The approximations are based on equal volume, equal surface area, the radius of gyration, and a collection of independent spheres with the same volume and the same volume-to-projected area ratio as the original nonspherical particle. A diffusion-limited cluster–cluster aggregation algorithm is used to specify the geometries of soot particles. Furthermore, the Generalized Multi-particle Mie (GMM) method is utilized to compute the single-scattering properties of individual soot aggregate particles assumed to be randomly oriented in space. The ensemble-averaged single-scattering properties of the particles are obtained by accounting for the probability distribution functions (PDF) of the number of monomers per aggregate at two wavelengths, 0.628 and 1.1μm. It is shown that all of the aforementioned equivalent-spherical approximations lead to large errors in the computation of the phase function.
A Numerical Method for Solving Global Irradiance on the Facades of Building Stocks

Abstract:Due to the influence of surrounding buildings on the radiation transfer process, the irradiance of individual buildings in building stocks is more uneven and different than that of individual buildings in open spaces. In view of the defect of the existing building surface irradiance calculation model in the sky radiation energy balance calculation, the complex surface reflection radiative transfer in diffuse irradiance, and complex processes, this paper combined the calculation of the complex surface narrow sky view, multiple reflections, and radiation characteristics of nonuniformity, and finally established the model for irradiance on the facade of a building stock (IFBS model) in a sheltered environment. The simulation results show that the IFBS model is superior to the traditional model in the calculation of sky diffuse irradiance and reflection irradiance of building stocks and is more suitable for the numerical calculation of the radiation transfer process of complex buildings.

Abstract:A fire simulation of long tunnel under 50 MW heat release rate and different ventilation velocities was carried out.The combustion process was described by diffusion combustion model,and the k-e model and P-1 model were used to calculate the turbulent flow and radiation.The calculations showed that,back flow of smoke will appear when the wind velocity is small,and velocity of 2 m/s can suppress the back flow when the fire is 50 MW.In tunnel with longitudinal ventilation,the smoke flow appears as the combination of radial diffusion and longitudinal diffusion.The smoke downstream the fire source fluctuates more severly as the ventilation velocity increase.During the tunnel fires,the suitable longitudinal ventilation velocity should just restrain the existence of back flow.

Abstract:A smoke simulation approach based on the integration of traditional particle systems and density functions is presented in this paper. By attaching a density function to each particle as its attribute, the diffusion of smoke can be described by the variation of particles' density functions, along with the effect on airflow by controlling particles' movement and fragmentation. In addition, a continuous density field for realistic rendering can be generated quickly through the look-up tables of particle's density functions. Compared with traditional particle systems, this approach can describe smoke diffusion, and provide a continuous density field for realistic rendering with much less computation. A quick rendering scheme is also presented in this paper as a useful preview tool for tuning appropriate parameters in the smoke model.

Abstract:The variation rules of smoke temperature field distributed in passages of highrise building are the foundation of fire fighting.Heat-transfer process between smoke and building walls was analyzed by using of difference equation of heat balance,and diffusion process between smoke and transverse passage of high-rise building was analyzed by mathematical model of air mixed with smoke.The variation rules of smoke temperature,diffusion time and length of exit passageway were analyzed by cases.The conclusion is fire head smoke temperature variation in smoke diffusion process more affected by generation quantity of smoke and less affected by heat-transfer process between smoke and building walls.

Abstract:Fire smoke is a general term of gas and suspending granule in the scene of a fire,and it is the admixture of burning and decompound offspring.Smoke production lies on the combustibility of combustible substance and air- supply,etc.Fire smoke has the characteristic of oxygen deficit,poison,dust hazard and high temperature,with the addition of the light attenuation and funk of fire smoke,so fire smoke is the main cause of casualty in the scene of a fire,and the design of smoke prevention and discharge is very important in architecture fire safety.Actual smoke production calculation is the theory foundation in the design of smoke prevention and discharge.Some discussion was done in this thesis,aiming at the method of actual smoke production calculation in some documents.The au- thors put forward their calculation method,comparing the two calculation results and concluding that whether the air was superfluous must be considered in calculating actual smoke production.

Abstract:In order to control the smoke diffusing and prevent the damage to the people, the smoke temperature was researched. In high-rise building fires, the most immediate threat to passengers' life is not the direct exposure to fire but the smoke inhalation because it contains hot air and toxic gases, so it has positive meaning to find the rules of the smoke temperature distribution. Abstract:The accurate calculation of the radiative properties of soot particle ensembles in flames needs to exactly reconstruct the geometric structures of all soot particles and accurately calculate the radiative properties of all soot particles based on their reconstructed geometric structures. However, the enormous number of soot particles in real ensembles makes it practically impossible to implement this task. To solve this problem, a feasible and accurate method is proposed for calculating their main radiative properties except scattering matrix and depolarization ratio. Experimental and numerical results show that soot particles with the same number of primary particles from the same sampling point can be considered as equivalent soot particles, which have almost the same volume, absorption cross-section, scattering cross-section and scattering asymmetry cross-section. Moreover, the average values of these quantities of equivalent soot particles approximately linearly increase with the number of primary particles. These findings can dramatically reduce the difficulty of reconstruction and calculation. The radiative properties of 37 different morphologies of soot particle ensembles in the visible and near-infrared regions (lambda = 0.40-3.00 mu m) are calculated using this method, and it is shown that the increasing of the average diameter of primary particles and the average number of primary particles per soot particle can enhance the absorption coefficient, scattering coefficient, asymmetry factor and single-scattering albedo of soot particle ensembles 0.1-900 times. In addition, these radiative properties are found to decrease by at least 70% with the increasing of lambda from 0.40 mu m to 3.00 mu m. (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Numerical Simulation on Smoke Temperature Distribution in a Large Indoor Pedestrian Street Fire

Abstract:In order to study the characteristics of fire smoke spread and temperature distribution of a large indoor pedestrian street under different heat release rates and smoke exhaust modes, this paper focuses on the analysis of fire smoke spread, visibility, smoke temperature distribution and variation curves in an atrium. This paper uses a numerical simulation method to conduct research. PyroSim fire simulation software is used to calculate this project, which is based on a full-scale experimental design scheme. The numerical simulation results show that under the conditions of higher heat release rate, the smoke spread rate is greater than that under the conditions of lower heat release rate. Furthermore, the average temperature of smoke in the atrium is also greater, up to about 400 °C. The conditions of a higher heat release rate also show the characteristics of faster generation, faster spread and a larger volume of smoke. When the smoke exhaust system is turned on, the thickness of the smoke layer and the smoke temperature decrease. There then comes a situation where the stabile section of the fire ends in advance. The simulation results of vertical temperature distribution in an atrium can fit the modified McCaffrey plume model in any case. Under all cases, the smoke temperature reaches the maximum directly above the fire source. The horizontal dimensionless smoke temperature rises under the atrium roof, and decreases exponentially with the dimensionless distance from the fire source. The greater the heat release rate of fire source is, the smaller the attenuation coefficient is, with a more than 50% change. When the smoke exhaust system is turned on, the smoke flow accelerates and the smoke is cooled rapidly. Thus, the attenuation coefficient increases. Additionally, the effect of mechanical smoke exhaust is better than natural smoke exhaust, because mechanical smoke exhaust makes air flow and heat exchange more intense. The variation amplitudes of the attenuation coefficient under natural smoke exhaust and mechanical smoke exhaust are 13% and 22%, respectively.

Abstract:The present paper is aimed at introducing the authors' numerical simulation for the corridor fire smoke flow in a building by applying a field model, in hoping to study how to prevent and control the situation by following the regularity of the fire and smoke movement. As is known, each year in our country lots of damages and casualties are caused by such fire and smoke-stuffing accidents and therefore great attention should be paid to the prevention and reduction of such disasters. In the paper, careful calculation of stratification of the gas temperature distribution has been done by its authors, which agrees on the whole with the measuring data. The resultant mass flow rates of the air entering into the corridor we have worked out also prove to be in conformity with the results given by the experimental correlation. The effects of heat release rate on the fire smoke flow in the corridor are investigated by means of the numerical simulation the paper has developed. And, finally, the data and information obtained in the simulation indicate that, under the condition of natural ventilation, the increase in heat release rate has obvious influence on the smoke temperature and velocity in the upper strata of the corridor, which are likely to lead to more hazards for the fire-induced smoke.

Abstract:The movements of smoldering cotton wick smoke and flaming diesel oil smoke plumes in thermally stratified environments in a small scale enclosure were investigated by experiments and CFD simulations. The reasonably good agreements of the experimental and simulated results indicated that the thermally stratified environments intensified the decreases of the axial temperatures and velocities of a fire smoke plume. The previous integral equation was shown to underestimate the maximum smoke rises, and also unable to explain the differences of the maximum heights of low and high density smoke with the same stratification and outlet conditions. An improved integral equation and an effective detection method were introduced and discussed.

Abstract:Fire Dynamics Simulator v3.0 was used to investigate and assess fire smoke transport and management in a realistic indoor sports center. An atrium fire test case illustrated the code's superiority over code-type empirical models for both accuracy and capability. Four fire scenarios in the Tsinghua University Sports Center were then simulated. The smoke layer's descent speed was predicted for each case. The importance of the door effect was revealed and an additional mechanical ventilation system for the building was proved to be of no help. The door effect must be carefully considered in future fire safety designs.

Abstract:The present paper has done an investigation and analysis of the movements of smoldering cotton wick smoke and flaming diesel oil smoke plumes in a temperature stratified ambient in a small scale environment through experimental measurements and CFD simulations.The results indicate that in a stratified environment,the temperature difference between the plume and the ambient may eventually vanish and reverse the sign,thus forming a horizontal layer with the plume ceasing to smolder on.Actually,the Morton equation might have been proved to underestimate the actual maximum height of a fire smoke plume.In fact,the diesel oil smoke can be getting decreased faster and rising at a smaller maximum height with the same outlet and stratification conditions.The situation may come to pass at the Morton integral model assumption that the plume is itself similar and the fire smoke is air.By introducing the smoke density factor and self-similarity factor,the Morton equation has thus been discussed and improved.

Abstract:In the physics-based simulation of smoke, a set of Navier-Stokes partial differential equations need to be solved. In solving the problem, we use the Dimension Analysis method to simplify the equations. While solving the advection item, the semi-Lagrangian scheme is adopted. For the numerical dissipation inherent in the semi-Lagrangian scheme, a compact scheme highly accurate was introduced to improve the accuracy on coarse grids. It is shown that these methods can efficiently produce realistic results.

Abstract:Photon transport through a diffusing slab can be described by the radiative transfer equation (RTE). When the slab is highly scattering and weakly absorbing, the RTE simplifies to the diffusion equation. In this paper, an inverse diffusion approximation (IDA) method is numerically developed to determine the optical properties (reduced scattering $\mu'_s$ and absorption coefficient $\mu_a$) of a homogeneous slab using simple reflectance and transmission measurements with a spectrometer. The reflectance and transmission of a diffusing slab with an arbitrary thickness can then be predicted by solving the forward problem by using the calculated $\mu'_s$ and $\mu_a$. Our method is validated both numerically, by directly comparing with Monte-Carlo simulations, and experimentally, by comparing with measurements on ZnO/PDMS and TiO$_2$/PDMS composite polymer films with varying thicknesses. The IDA method is also applied to distinguish between different types of tissue. Overall, our method could be used to guide the design of radiative cooling reflectors, or lighting and optical display diffusers for applications in medical imaging and other fields.

Measurement of Mass Extinction Coefficient of Particles Based on the Infrared Quantitative Analysis

Abstract:The mass extinction coefficient of smoke particles is an intrinsic physical parameter to character shielding property. Infrared absorbency of aerosol particles is measured by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer in this article. On basis of quantitative analysis, a kind of method is proposed to rapidly and accurately measure the attenuation property of particles without smoke box in laboratory. Certain mass powder is dispersed in organic solvent, and then suspended solution is scanned by FTIR. According to spectrograms, the extinction coefficients of materials are calculated at infrared frequency. Obtained results are accorded with data measured by smoke box. Consequently, it is proved that above-mentioned experiment method is exactly and reliable. This testing technology can be used to quickly choose and identify shielding effects of new aerosol materials. To traditional test method, it is supplementary and auxiliary.
Numerical Investigation on Smoke Movement in a Large Space Building under Fire Scenarios

Abstract:Numerical investigations on smoke filling process in large space buildings were carried out in this paper. Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) code, based on the concept of large eddy simulation, is adopted to simulate a fire process in the PolyU/USTC Atrium. In order to investigate the grid independency of the simulation, three grid systems were employed, and an appropriate one was selected. Compared with experimental data, reasonable model constants of s C and Prt are determined for simulating smoke movement in large space buildings. Then, smoke filling processes were investigated under natural smoke exhaust method and mechanical smoke exhaust method. Predicted results show their performances. Besides, the effects of the ceiling temperature and ambient temperature on the smoke spreading process were studied in this paper. Predicted results show that the high ceiling temperature can slow down the so-called smoke ceiling jet moving along the horizontal direction of the ceiling. On the contrary, the low ceiling temperature can accelerate the smoke ceiling jet to move faster in the horizontal direction of the ceiling.
An Improved Small-Angle Approximation for Forward Scattering and Its Use in a Fast Two-Component Radiative Transfer Method

Abstract:The vector radiative transfer equation is decomposed into two components: a forward component and a diffuse component. The forward component is analytically solved with a small-angle approximation. The solution of the forward component becomes the source for the diffuse component. In the present study, the diffuse component is solved using the successive order of scattering method. The strong anisotropy of the scattering of radiation by a medium is confined to the forward component for which a semianalytical solution is given; consequently, the diffuse component slowly varies as a function of scattering angle once the forward-scattering peak is removed. Moreover, the effect on the diffuse component induced by the forward component can be interpreted by including the low orders of the generalized spherical function expansion of the forward component or even replaced by the Dirac delta function. As a result, the computational effort can be significantly reduced. The present two-component method is validated using the benchmarks related to predefined aerosol and cloud layers with a totally absorbing underlying surface. As a canonical application, the optical properties of water clouds and ice clouds used for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Collection 6 cloud-property retrieval products are used for radiative transfer simulations under cloudy conditions.

Abstract:To get more information about early smoke movement in thermally stratified environments in large-volume spaces, a detailed study of low density and big density smoke plumes in thermally stratified environments in a small-scale enclosure was undertaken by means of experimental mea- surement and CFD simulation. The reasonably good agreement between the experimental results and the simulated results indicates that a thermally stratified environment intensifies the decrease of the axial temperature and velocity of a fire smoke plume with height until the upward plume movement terminates at a certain height. Comparisons of the maximum plume heights measured experimentally and integral equation results showed that the integral equation underestimates the actual maximum heights of fire smoke plumes, and is also unable to predict the smoke density influences upon the maximum heights. The previous available integral model should be improved for better applications in real fire situations.

The reasonably good agreements of the experimental results and the simulated results indicate that the thermally stratified environment intensifies the decreases of the axial temperature and velocity of a fire smoke plume until makes it stop at a maximum height. Comparisons of the maximum plume heights between the experimental measurements and the integral equation results show that the available equation underestimates the actual maximum heights of fire smoke plumes and is unable to predict the influence of smoke density upon the maximum heights. A new smoke detection method of light section image detection was suggested to overcome the shortcomings of conventional beam-type smoke sensors and detect the early fire effectively.
