Abstract:The knowledge of wing orientation and deformation during flapping flight is necessary for a complete aerodynamic analysis, but to date those kinematic features have not been simultaneously quantified for free-flying insects. A projected comb-fringe (PCF) method has been developed for measuring spanwise camber changes on free-flying dragonflies and on beating-flying dragonflies through the course of a wingbeat, which bases on projecting a fringe pattern over the whole measurement area and then measuring the wing deformation from the distorted fringe pattern. Experimental results demonstrate substantial camber changes both along the wingspan and through the course of a wingbeat. The ratio of camber deformation to chord length for hind wing is up to 0.11 at 75% spanwise with a flapping angle of − 0. 66 degree for a free-flying dragonfly.

Abstract:The simultaneous measurements of the body position, attitude and the wing kinematics of a free-flight insect are very important for analysing the flight performance. In this paper, a method based on combining a comb fringe pattern with sign points on the dragonfly wing has been developed to improve the accuracy in body position and attitude measurement or in construction of a local body-fixed coordinate system. Meanwhile, the wing kinematics can be measured simultaneously by the comb fringe pattern method. The method has been used successfully in the measurement of a free-flight dragonfly.

Abstract:The study of the flight performance of a dragonfly requires a simple method to measure the torsional angle and flapping angle of a dragonfly wing during beating motion, we developed a fringe projection method in which the flapping angle and torsional angle of a dragonfly wing can be measured during beating motion using only one high-speed camera. The measured sections can be easily recognized from the number of fringes, without having to use any diffuse marks.
On the Vein-Stiffening Membrane Structure of a Dragonfly Hind Wing

Abstract:Aiming at exploring the excellent structural performance of the vein-stiffening membrane structure of dragonfly hind wings, we analyzed two planar computational models and three 3D computational models with cambered corrugation based on the finite element method. It is shown that the vein size in different zones is proportional to the magnitude of the vein internal force when the wing structure is subjected to uniform out-of-plane transverse loading. The membrane contributes little to the flexural stiffness of the planar wing models, while exerting an immense impact upon the stiffness of the 3D wing models with cambered corrugation. If a lumped mass of 10% of the wing is fixed on the leading edge close to the wing tip, the wing fundamental frequency decreases by 10.7%∼13.2%; if a lumped mass is connected to the wing via multiple springs, the wing fundamental frequency decreases by 16.0%∼18.0%. Such decrease in fundamental frequency explains the special function of the wing pterostigma in alleviating the wing quivering effect. These particular features of dragonfly wings can be mimicked in the design of new-style reticulately stiffening thin-walled roof systems and flapping wings in novel intelligent aerial vehicles.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of the camber on gliding and hovering performance of two-dimensional corrugated airfoils. While the flying mechanism of natural flyers remains a myth up to nowadays, the simulation serves as a minor step toward understanding the steady and unsteady aerodynamics of the dragonfly flight.Design/methodology/approach - The lattice Boltzmann method is used to simulate the flow past the cambered corrugated dragonfly airfoil at low Reynolds numbers. For gliding flight, the maximum camber, the distance of the location of maximum camber point from the leading edge and Reynolds number are regarded as control variables; for hovering flight, the maximum camber, the flapping amplitude and trajectory are considered as control variables. Then corresponding simulations are performed to evaluate the implications of these factors.Findings - Greater gliding ratio can be reached by increasing the maximum camber of the dragonfly wing section. When the location of the maximum camber moves backward along the wing chord, large scale flow separation can be delayed. These two effects result in better gliding performances. For hovering performances, it is found that for different flapping amplitudes along an inclined plane, the horizontal force exerted on the airfoils increases with the camber, and the drag growths first but then drops. It is also found that the elliptic flapping trajectory is most sensitive to the camber of the cambered corrugated dragonfly wing section.Originality/value - The effects of the camber on gliding and hovering performance of the cambered dragonfly wing section are explored in detail. The data obtained can be helpful when designing micro aerial vehicles.

Abstract:To better understand the passive torsional motion and to quantify the torsional motion of an insect, we developed a new scanning beam method that can measure with high resolution the variation in both the torsion angle and shape of an insect wing during pure Rapping motion. This new method is based on the conventional principle used in a laser beam displacement probe with a position detector, but introduces the use of an acousto-optic deflector, which enables us to pass the scanning laser beam over the wing. Therefore, by measuring the relative displacement between the beam spots on the wing, we can determine the passive variation in both the torsion angle and shape of an insect wing with high resolution. According to the waveform supplied to the acousto-optic deflector we define both a two-point scanning method, which we use to measure the variation in torsion angle, and a multipoint scanning method, which we use to measure the variation in shape. We apply these methods to a dragonfly wing at different flapping frequencies, and compare the results with those determined using a high-speed video camera. The good agreement between the two methods shows that the scanning beam method can be effectively applied in the field of biomechanics to study the torsion angle variation and shape variation of an insect wing. Biomechanical Behaviors of Dragonfly Wing: Relationship Between Configuration and Deformation

Abstract:In this paper, the natural structures of a dragonfly wing, including the corrugation of the chordwise cross-section, the sandwich microstructure veins, and the junctions between the vein and the membrane, have been investigated with experimental observations, and the morphological parameters of these structural features are measured. The experimental result indicates that the corrugated angle among the longitudinal veins ranges from 80° to 150°, and the sandwiched microstructure vein mainly consists of chitin and protein layers. Meanwhile, different finite element models, which include models I and I* for the planar forewings, models II and II* for the corrugated forewings, and a submodel with solid veins and membranes, are created to investigate the effects of these structural features on the natural frequency/modal, the dynamical behaviors of the flapping flight, and the deformation mechanism of the forewings. The numerical results indicate that the corrugated forewing has a more reasonable natural frequency/modal, and the first order up-down flapping frequency of the corrugated wing is closer to the experimental result (about 27.00 Hz), which is significantly larger than that of the planar forewing (10.94 Hz). For the dynamical responses, the corrugated forewing has a larger torsional angle than the planar forewing, but a lower flapping angle. In addition, the sandwich microstructure veins can induce larger amplitudes of torsion deformation, because of the decreasing stiffness of the whole forewing. For the submodel of the forewing, the average stress of the chitin layer is much larger than that of the protein layer in the longitudinal veins. These simulative methods assist us to explain the flapping flight mechanism of the dragonfly and to design a micro aerial vehicle by automatically adjusting the corrugated behavior of the wing.

Abstract:SUMMARYA robust technique for determining the wing kinematics, body position and attitude of a free-flight dragonfly is described. The new method is based on a projected comb-fringe technique combined with the natural landmarks on a dragonfly, allowing us to establish the local body-centered coordinate system with high accuracy, and to measure the body attitude at any instant. The kinematic parameters, including wingbeat frequency, flapping angle, angle of attack, torsional angle and camber deformation, required no assumptions to be made with respect to wing geometry, deformability (except the assumption of rigid leading edges) or bilateral wing symmetry. Two typical flight behaviors,forward flight and turning maneuvers, of dragonflies Polycanthagyna melanictera Selys were measured and analyzed.

Abstract:We describe a two-dimensional (2-D) fringe projection method, projecting two groups of comb-fringe patterns with high intensity and sharpness onto the flapping wings of a moth (Helicoverpa armigera) from two directions. The images of distorted fringes are caught by two high speed cameras from two orthogonal views. By three-dimensional reconstruction of the wing, we obtain the wing kinematics of the moth including the flapping angle, torsion angle and camber deformation.
Effects of Dragonfly Wing Structure on the Dynamic Performances

Abstract:The configurations of dragonfly wings, including the corrugations of the chordwise cross-section, the microstructure of the longitudinal veins and membrane, were comprehensively investigated using the Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM). Based on the experimental results reported previously, the multi-scale and multi-dimensional models with different structural features of dragonfly wing were created, and the biological dynamic behaviors of wing models were discussed through the Finite Element Method (FEM). The results demonstrate that the effects of different structural features on dynamic behaviors of dragonfly wing such as natural frequency/modal, bending/torsional deformation, reaction force/torque are very significant. The corrugations of dragonfly wing along the chordwise can observably improve the flapping frequency because of the greater structural stiffness of wings. In updated model, the novel sandwich microstructure of the longitudinal veins remarkably improves the torsional deformation of dragonfly wing while it has a little effect on the flapping frequency and bending deformation. These integrated structural features can adjust the deformation of wing oneself, therefore the flow field around the wings can be controlled adaptively. The fact is that the flights of dragonfly wing with sandwich microstructure of longitudinal veins are more efficient and intelligent.

Abstract:In the present work, a thorough investigation on the microstructural and morphological aspects of dragonfly wings was carried out using scanning electron microscope. Then, based on this study and the previous reports, a precise three-dimensional numerical model was developed and natural frequencies and vibration modes of dragonfly forewing were determined by finite element method. The results shown that dragonfly wings are made of a series of adaptive materials, which form a very complex composite structure. This bio-composite fabrication has some unique features and potential benefits. Furthermore, the numerical results show that the first natural frequency of dragonfly wings is about 168 Hz and bending is the predominant deformation mode in this stage. The accuracy of the present analysis is verified by comparison of calculated results with experimental data. This paper may be helpful for micro aerial vehicle design concerning dynamic response.

Abstract:A new method has been developed to measure the thickness and shape of a dragonfly wing simultaneously. The innovation in the method, which we call the TSM (thickness and shape measurement) method, is the combination of a heterodyne interferometer and a laser triangulation displacement sensor into one optical system. We confirmed the accuracy of the method by measuring the displacement of a glass plate and the thickness variation generated by a tilted glass plate. The method was then applied to a tilted glass plate and a dragonfly wing. The TSM system has a relative accuracy of 1% in the shape measurement and 1.8% in the thickness variation measurement. The results indicated that the method is very effective in biomechanics studies, such as evaluating the flight performance of dragonflies. In such evaluations, it is essential to measure with high accuracy the variations in both shape and thickness of the wing simultaneously.

Abstract:An angle-compensation sensor is described for measuring the shape of a dragonfly wing. In this method, the displacement is measured using an acousto-optic deflector and a quadrant position sensor. The displacement of a plastic plate that has a reflectivity of 4% is measured using this method. The displacement is then compared with that measured using a linear gauge and is found to have a standard deviation of 8 μm for a measured displacement range of 10 mm. The sensor is then applied to measure the shape of a dragonfly wing.

Abstract:In order to study the flexible deformation process of the micro flapping wing during its fluttering, the dynamic three-dimensional reconstruction of the wings is carried out by the RealSense SR300 depth camera. The wing flapping parameters is measured and the deformation of different wings flapping are analyzed. The results show that the wing deformation of the large flexible wing is irregularly adaptive during the flapping process, and it has a larger amount of arch deformation, and the asymmetry of the flexible deformation of the wings on both sides is greater than that of the small flexible wing.

Abstract:Motion and deformation of the wings of a moth Mythimna Separata (Walker) tethered to a steel beam were measured by using an optical method that uses fringe pattern projection. Simultaneously, the vertical force due to aerodynamic force generated by the wings was estimated by measuring the bending deformation of the beam during flapping motion of the moth. The force was estimated by subtracting the vertical forces due to inertial and centrifugal forces acting on the wings, which were estimated from the measured flapping motion, from the measured vertical force. Both the measured motion and deformation of the wing and the estimated vertical aerodynamic force generated by the wings suggest that the feathering angles are mainly affected by the inertial moment generated by the flapping motion and that the wing camber is mainly affected by the aerodynamic force generated by the wing.

Abstract:To better understand the highly functional and largely optimized mechanical constructions of a dragonfly wing, the dragonfly wing structure was studied using finite element analysis. A fringe pattern projection method was used together with a photo image of the wing to get the 3-D shape of the wing. Eight kinds of FEA models with different vein distribution and different vein size have been built based on the 3-D shape. Each model was analyzed under different loads using ANSYS 5.5. The results reveal that the wing deformation caused by aerodynamic pressure is much larger than that caused by the inertial effect. The vein network is essential for the wing to maintain stability and support load.

Abstract:A scanning projected line method was developed for measuring the flapping angle, lag angle, torsional angle and torsional deformation of a bumblebee wing during beating motion. The method uses an acousto optic deflector (AOD) with high diffraction efficiency to generate projected lines, allowing us to adjust the interbeam angle easily, and to measure the wing with low reflectivity. Combining AOD with a grating, we can measure a beating bumblebee wing with a large measurement range.

Abstract:A divergent-ray projection (DRP) method was developed for simultaneously measuring the flapping angle, lag angle, and torsional angle of an insect wing using only one high-speed camera. We applied this method to a bumblebee wing. We then simulated the flows around the beating wing by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a bumblebee hovering (forward flight) based on the actual geometry of the wing and the measured kinematics of the beating motion (i.e., the three angles). Our measurement and flow visualization reveal that the beating motion of a bumblebee wing creates highly three-dimensional flows that are extremely sensitive to the kinematics. Such sensitivity means that both an accurate description of the beating motion and an appropriate visualization of the flows are important in studying the flight performance of it.

Abstract:The deformation characteristics of the flapping wings are crucial to the enhancement of flight robot performance. In measuring wing deformation with conventional stereo vision and structured light projection, issues such as occlusion and limited field of view exist. In this article, we propose an innovative "Kite-Lead" approach for measuring the dynamic deformation of flapping-wing robots based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG), which can realize outdoor flight monitoring under unconstrained conditions. Under the theoretical guidance of the surface reconstruction algorithm and the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis, we develop a sensing strategy for wing deformation employing flexible sensor arrays with 28 FBGs. FBGs are directly encapsulated using silicone adhesive at specific locations on the wing surface. Outdoor continuous flight tests are conducted to investigate the strain distributions of all 28 sensing points during the release phase within 1 s and stabilization phase within 0.4 s. Through the wavelength outputs, the wings' curvature and bending direction can be inverted, and then the wings' 3-D shape is reconstructed to reveal the deformation characteristics of the flapping-wing robot. This article presents a system for measuring the dynamic deformation of flapping-wing robots without obstructing the line of sight or limiting the available flight space. The research results resolve the existing measurement issues and provide valuable test technology and scientific information for the flapping-wing flying robot.
