Abstract:Purpose: To study the exact size of the anterior and posterior segments, as well as the developmental changes of human eye. Methods: 38 eyeballs from embryos or fetus, 7 from adults were dissected to prepare whole mounts of the anterior and posterior segments. Via a digital camera or with a flat scanner, images of flat mounts were imported into Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and saved as TIF pictures for further analysis. With NIH Image 1.62, area of each part was measured and the area ratio of cornea to eyeball was calculated. Results: The eye growed slowly before 12th embryonic week, while much quickly after that. The area ratio of cornea to whole eyeball ranged between 1/10-1/11, far away from that of adult, which is 1/ 15. Conclusions: Cornea and sclera of human grow in a proportional style before birth. The area ratio of adult cornea to whole eyeball is about 1/15.
