Abstract:Rutile separation from calcite, apatite and quartz by flotation was investigated. Abstract:Great progress has been made in reverse flotation of fine quartz, especially many new reagents were proved their excellent effects. However, the influences of complex flotation system on fine quartz flotation still need to be scrutinized. In this study, alkyl ether amine (Flotigam EDA-C from Clariant) was used as a collector for the flotation of quartz. It shows better collectability for the flotation of quartz at about pH 10.0 (+/- 0.2). The adsorption mechanism of EDA-C on quartz and the influence of calcium ions on the flotation of quartz were investigated by adsorption tests, zeta-potential measurements, FTIR spectra measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic and atomic force microscopy imaging. Results show that EDA-C adsorbs on the quartz surface in physical adsorption with no new products, changing its zeta potentials and increasing its hydrophobicity. Calcium ion concentration of 20 mg/L, 40 mg/L, 60 mg/L and 1 g/L can inhibit the quartz surface strongly and decrease its recovery sharply. Inhibition action of 2 g/L Ca2+ decreased, even disappeared when the collector concentration increased to 90 mg/L Calcium ions changed the chemical environment of Si atoms and Ols on the quartz surface. After positively charged CaOH+ adsorbed on quartz surface, the amount of EDA-C adsorbed on quartz surface and the recovery decreased. Decoupling the effects of solid and liquid phases in a Pb-water glass mixture on the selective flotation separation of scheelite from calcite

Abstract:In this study, lead ion was combined with water glass to separate scheelite from calcite using flotation. The effects and underlying mechanisms of the liquid and solid phases generated in this combined depressant (Pb-water glass, a mixture of lead ion and water glass) on the flotation performance of scheelite and calcite were investigated through micro-flotation experiments, X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer measurements, fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) analysis, zeta potential measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests. The flotation results indicate that the selective flotation separation of scheelite from calcite results from the liquid phase, not the solid phase. The XRD and FTIR results indicate that under different mass ratios of lead ion to water glass, the solid phases are the leadsilicate with amorphous structures, while the UV-Vis results reveal significant absorption differences in the liquid phases under different mass ratios of lead ion to water glass. The zeta potential and XPS results indicate that less metal silicate polymers are adsorbed on the scheelite surface than on the calcite surface, allowing NaOL to be adsorbed on the scheelite surface, but not on the calcite surface, and selective flotation separation of scheelite from calcite is therefore achieved. XPS results further reveal that the metal silicate polymers in the liquid phase are adsorbed on both mineral surfaces by firstly breaking the Ca-O group and then reacting with the Ca active sites.

Abstract:Due to the similar physical and chemical properties of ilmenite and olivine, separating them is challenging. The flotation process, with the use of collectors, is an effective method. In this study, a ternary collector consisting of aluminum ion (III), benzohydroxamic acid (BHA), and sodium oleate (NaOL) was prepared for the flotation separation of ilmenite and olivine. Through micro-flotation experiments, molecular dynamics simulation (MD), density functional theory (DFT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) analysis, the synergistic effect between the components of the ternary collector and the adsorption configuration on the surface of ilmenite was investigated. The results revealed that at pH = 8, Al (III), BHA, and NaOL could coordinate and adsorb effectively on the surface of ilmenite, enhancing its floatability for separation from olivine. The adsorption configuration differed from previous reports, showing a co-adsorption of multiple forms on the surface of ilmenite.

Selective Flotation Separation of Fluorite from Calcite Using Mixed Anionic/cationic Collectors

Abstract:In this study, anionic/cationic collector sodium oleate (NaOL) mixed with dodecylamine (DDA) and salted water glass were used to separate fluorite from calcite. The flotation separation performance and underlying mechanism were researched by micro-flotation experiments, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, wettability analysis, fluorescence spectrum analysis and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Micro-flotation experiment results show that the mixed anionic/cationic collectors (NaOL: DDA = 9:1) have strong flotation selectivity for two minerals, and the salted water glass can selectively depress calcite. This combined reagent system can achieve the separation of fluorite and calcite. The FTIR measurement results show that NaOL and DDA are co-adsorbed on the surface of fluorite, whereas only NaOL is adsorbed on the surface of calcite. The wettability analysis results show that the salted water glass hinders the adsorption of mixed collectors on the surface of calcite and selectively inhibits its flotation. The fluorescence spectrum analysis results show that the mixed collectors can produce large micelles, reduce the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and obtain greater molecular activity compared with a single collector. The AFM imaging results shows that single NaOL is uniformly adsorbed on the surface of fluorite. When using the mixed collectors, DDA molecules are interspersed amongst the molecules of NaOL to increase the hydrophobic end and make the surface of fluorite more hydrophobic. Based on these analyses, an adsorption model of the mixed collector NaOL/DDA on the mineral surface was drawn, which showed that the mixed collector produced a strong synergistic effect compared with a single collector. Therefore, it is more conducive to the separation of fluorite and calcite.

Abstract:The flotation separation of apatite from calcite is gordian due to the similar surface properties and calcium active sites, which make a poor selectivity in traditional fatty acid system. Pb-BHA coordination collector present great selectivity, and surface transformation by fluoride ions plays an important role in the flotation separation of salt minerals. The application of surface transformation combining with lead nitrate-benzohydroxamic acid (Pb-BHA) coordination collector can achieve the flotation separation of different calcium minerals. This study suggest that the floatability of apatite and calcite is similar without any depressants, and fluoride ions has a strong inhibiting effect on calcite but not on apatite under the Pb-BHA collector system. Zeta potential measurement determine that the surface charge of calcite obviously shift to a negative value with the adsorption of fluoride ions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement indicates that fluoride ions is easier to adsorb on surface of calcite than that of apatite, and generate CaF2 films. Atomic force microscopy measurement illustrates the surface morphology of calcite becomes more uneven and the roughness increases obviously after the treatment of F−. Therefore, the surface transformation is meaningful to study and provides a new method for the flotation separation of calcium minerals.

Abstract:The flotation separation of fine minerals, including rutile, has long been a challenging research focus. This study selected rutile and garnet samples with size fractions of −15, −38, and −74 μm to investigate the impact of particle size on flotation separation. Infrared spectroscopy, Zeta potential analysis, adsorption capacity measurements, and high-speed camera were utilized to analyze the mechanism. Results indicate that a high-grade concentrate with recovery of 92.33 % was achieved by mixing −74 μm rutile and −15 μm garnet in a 1:1 ratio. Benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) collector primarily chemisorbs onto the surface of rutile particles. BHA's adsorption capacity on each particle size's rutile surface is significantly higher than that of garnet. Meanwhile, sodium fluorosilicate (SSF) exhibits the strongest inhibitory effect on −15 μm garnet particles. Additionally, adhesion between bubbles and −74 μm rutile is much stronger than that between bubbles and fine particles overall. These findings have significant reference value for improving eclogite-type rutile ore's fine particle separation.

Abstract:The surface properties and flotation behaviour of aluminosilicates including kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite, using N-(3-aminopropyl)-dodecanamide as a collector, have been investigated. The best recoveries of kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite were respectively 91.5%, 90.6%, and 96.3%. On the basis of FT-IR spectra and zeta potential, the ionization of surface hydroxyl, as well as isomorphic exchange of surface ions, accounts for the mineral surface charges. The mechanisms of interactions of the mineral surface with collectors depend on the pH of the pulp. In the acidic region, the interactions of the mineral surfaces with the collector were mainly electrostatic, but in the alkaline region, the interactions are mainly due to hydrogen bonding. It can be seen from SEM photographs of aluminosilicates that pyrophyllite takes the shape of thin slices, but kaolinite and illite have irregular porous structures. Specific surface area and particle size distributions of aluminosilicates also indicate that kaolinite and illite are relatively large porous particles with larger external as well as internal surface areas.
The selective flotation separation of rhodochrosite against quartz and calcite with dicarboxylic amino acid-based surfactants as a novel collector

Abstract:Rhodochrosite is often associated with calcium- and silicon-bearing minerals, resulting in a low grade, and it is difficult to achieve efficient flotation separation with conventional collectors. A novel collector, 2-decanoylamino-pentanedioic acid (DPA), was synthesized by constructing an amide group and double-branched carboxylic acid molecular structure to selectively separate rhodochrosite against quartz and calcite. The flotation results demonstrated that, compared with sodium oleate, DPA exhibited superior collecting performance and enabled the separation of rhodochrosite from quartz and calcite under neutral pH, with no addition of a foaming agent or activator; thus, DPA is regarded as an appropriate flotation collector for rhodochrosite. Analysis of the contact angles, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that DPA chemically adsorbed on the surface of rhodochrosite, forming 8-membered ring or two 4-membered ring structures. However, no significant interaction was detected on the surface of quartz and calcite, providing evidence for the flotation separation of rhodochrosite from calcite and quartz. This research provides a potential collector for efficient utilization of rhodochrosite.

Abstract:Reverse flotation desilication with anionic collector sodium oleate (OL) and activator Ca 2+ is a common beneficiation method to purify hematite. Herein, the separation mechanism of hematite and quartz were systematically investigated by experiments and DFT calculations with the effect of surface hydroxylation fully considered. Flotation results showed that the success of anionic reverse flotation of hematite was inseparable from the activation of quartz by Ca 2+ . In addition, the use of sodium humate (HM), which selectively inhibited hematite, was also very critical. The Zeta potential revealed that the activator Ca 2+ ions were highly selective for quartz and depression HM was highly selective for hematite. SEM clearly showed that Ca species were adsorbed on the quartz surface, which was confirmed as chemisorption by XPS. DFT calculations further confirmed that the adsorption of HM on the surface of hematite was more favorable than that of quartz, while Ca 2+ on the surface of quartz was more favorable than that of hematite, and the chemisorbed Ca 2+ ions on the quartz surface provided targeted reaction sites for the subsequent adsorption of OL, which enabled the activated quartz to overflow into the froth products, while the inhibited hematite to sink and concentrate in the flotation cell.

Abstract:The complex rutile ore containing TiO2 and ZrO2 exhibited a high economical value. To effectively recover TiO2 and ZrO2 from the raw sample, a complete gravity separation process including a spiral chute and a shaking table was proposed. Chemical constituents, phase, liberation degree and size distribution were firstly characterized by XRF, chemical analyses, XRD, EPMA-EDS and screening to understand the mineralogy. Then, two stages of spiral chute separation tests were performed to treat the complex rutile ore. A rough zircon concentrate containing 33.18% ZrO2 was obtained after the first-stage spiral chute and a rough rutile concentrate containing 56.77% TiO2 was obtained after the second-stage spiral chute. To further improve the grade and recovery of ZrO2 and TiO2 in the rough products obtained by spiral chutes, shaking table tests were performed. A zircon concentrate containing 42.65% ZrO2 and a rutile concentrate containing 61.75% TiO2 were obtained. For the tailing of the first-stage spiral chute, a rutile product assaying 57.50% TiO2 was obtained, and the tailing was directly discarded as waste after the shaking table tests. Moreover, the distribution regularities of ZrO2 and TiO2 in the products were further revealed by XRD analyses. Finally, a closed-circuit beneficiation process was proposed to treat the complex rutile ore for achieving comprehensive and effective utilization.

Application and Mechanism of Mixed Anionic/Cationic Collectors on Reverse Flotation of Hematite

Abstract:In order to enhance the reverse flotation effect of hematite, dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC) and a mixed anionic/cationic collector of DTAC and tall oil were selected for flotation studies on quartz and hematite. Surface tension tests, FT-IR, XPS analysis, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were also conducted in order to investigate the interaction mechanism of the mixed collector on the quartz surface. The results revealed that, at a natural pH (approximately 7.0) and 298 K, and with a dosage of 20 mg/L for the mixed collector (mDTAC:mtall oil = 3:1) and 4 mg/L for causticized starch, the recovery rates of quartz and hematite were 94.67% and 8.69%, respectively. Compared to the use of a single DTAC, the mixed DTAC/tail oil collector enhanced the flotation effect under constant variables. Additionally, a comparison of temperature and surface tension for monomineral flotation and artificially mixed ore flotation tests showed that the mixed collector was less influenced by temperature, compared to the single DTAC, and exhibited good resistance and more effective separation of quartz and hematite at lower temperatures. The analysis of FT-IR, XPS, and MD simulations revealed that the single DTAC collector primarily adsorbed onto quartz through physical adsorption and hydrogen bonding, while the combination of tall oil and DTAC enhanced the adsorption of the collector on the quartz surface.

Abstract:Rhodochrosite and calcite have similar physicochemical characteristics and floatability, making it difficult for conventional flotation collectors to effectively separate the two minerals. In this paper, a novel 3-tetradecylamine propyl amidoxime (TPA) collector with selective and excellent collection capability for rhodochrosite has been investigated. The micro-flotation experiments showed that the flotation performance of TPA is superior to that of the commonly used sodium oleate (NaOL) collector, and the separation of rhodochrosite and calcite can be achieved under neutral conditions. At a slurry pH of 7 and a dosage of 2.0×10 -4 mol/L, TPA provided a recovery of 88.5% for rhodochrosite and only 15.0% for calcite. The mechanism of interaction between TPA and minerals was examined by contact angle, Zeta potential tests and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, which indicated that TPA selectively adsorbed on the surface of rhodochrosite rather than calcite. Finally, the adsorption behavior of TPA molecules on the surface of rhodochrosite was confirmed by Density functional theory (DFT) calculation to be through electrostatic interaction. This paper provides a novel collector for the flotation separation of rhodochrosite from calcite with excellent collecting ability and selectivity, which is significant for the efficient utilization of manganese ore resources.

Effect of aluminum ion on rutile flotation

Abstract:Al (III) ions are one of the primary interfering ions that make separating rutile and ferroaluminum garnet difficult. The effect of Al (III) ions on the flotation of rutile with benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) as collector was studied by micro-flotation test, solution chemistry calculation, Zeta potential measurement, adsorption capacity measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The micro-flotation results show that the addition order of Al (III) ions and benzohydroxamic acid significantly affected rutile recovery. When Al (III) ions and BHA are added to the pulp successively, the rutile recovery can be significantly reduced by the addition of Al (III) ions in the pH range of 4 to 8. The results of solution chemical calculation showed that Al (III) ions tend to form hydroxyl complexes in the pH range of 4 to 8. The adsorption capacity test and XPS analysis showed that Al (III) ions and hydroxyl complex[Al(OH) 2 + , Al(OH) 2+ , Al(OH) 3 , Al 2 (OH) 2 4+ , Al 3 (OH) 4 5+ ] could compete with benzohydroxamic acid for the adsorption site of rutile surface.

Abstract:Limonite is now considered as an important iron ore resource in China due to the rapidly depleting magnetite and haematite reserves. The separation of limonite from calcite by flotation is a problem to be solved, and it was investigated systematically in this paper. Flotation tests show that the recoveries of limonite and calcite are close to 95% within the pH range of 7.5–10.0 using 3 × 10−4 mol/L sodium oleate as collector. However, the flotation of limonite was depressed by calcium ions generated from the dissolution of calcite in the flotation of a mixture of limonite and calcite. The effects of depression on limonite can be enhanced by adding sodium pyrophosphate. Hence, the separation of calcite from limonite can be finished by reverse flotation. Under the test condition, the limonite–calcite mixture with Fe grade of 28.45% was upgraded to a concentrate with 50.5% Fe and 91.50% Fe recovery.
Separation of vivianite from digested sludge by flotation using oleic acid as a collector

Abstract:The recovery of vivianite from anaerobically digested sludge has significant engineering implications for phosphorus recovery. Current phosphate recovery technology recovery technology has not yet reached a mature stage, and the complex process flow and equipment requirements make the investment and operating costs high. This study achieved the flotation separation of vivianite from digested sludge using collectors (oleic acid, surfactant, and sodium oleate) and an inhibitor (sodium silicate). The process involved investigating the adsorption of vivianite by the collectors and the inhibition of quartz in the sludge by the inhibitor. It has been found that the functional group of oleic acid can strongly adsorb onto the surface of vivianite, leading to an increase in its contact angle from 30.7° to 104.4° and significantly enhancing its hydrophobicity. This improvement facilitated the vivianite's attachment to foam, enabling effective separation from the sludge and quartz. Oleic acid exhibits the most significant shift towards a negative charge on the surface of vivianite and provides the best effect. Sodium silicate can effectively enhance the hydrophilicity of quartz in sludge, reducing the contact angle from 64.4° to 7.1°. This makes the quartz less likely to float and easier to separate from vivianite. Using 5 ml/L of oleic acid as the collector and 15 g/L of sodium silicate as the inhibitor, the recovery efficiency of vivianite can reach 67.8 %. This demonstrates that the flotation technique can effectively enrich vivianite in digested sludge.

Abstract:With the explosive growth of demand for lithium, low-grade spodumene tailings could be concerned as alternative resources to realize the supplying. In this paper, a batch flotation experiment was adopted and optimized using sodium oleate (NaOL) and dodecylamine (DDA) as mixed collector by the reverse flotation desilication for recovery of lithium and rubidium from low-grade spodumene tailings. A favorable indicator of Li 2 O grade of 5.10% with recovery of 62.99%, and Rb 2 O grade of 2.09% with recovery of 50.80% for the flotation concentrate was obtained. The difference in contact angle results between flotation concentrate (13.92°) and tailings (47.96°) proves that the mixed collector could efficiently separate quartz and spodumene. The zeta potential measurement and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra reveal that the optimal mixed collector could improve the hydrophobicity of quartz via charge neutralization and act on the mineral surface mainly through physical adsorption. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows that Al atom as the active site in the optimized spodumene (1 1 0) surface could adsorb water molecules, forming a hydration layer that inhibits spodumene from adhering to bubbles. Mulliken's charge population analysis confirm that NaOL + DDA could enhance the flotation efficiency of quartz by increasing the polarity of functional groups.

Abstract:The separation and enrichment of scheelite from calcite are hindered by the similar active Ca2+ sites of scheelite and the calcite with calciferous gangue. Herein, a novel trisiloxane surfactant, N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrisiloxane (AATS), was first explored and synthesized and recommended as the collector for the flotation separation of scheelite from calcite. The micro-flotation and mixed binary mineral flotation tests showed that AATS had excellent collection performance for scheelite and high selectivity for calcite within a wide pH range. At the same time, contact angle and zeta-potential measurements, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the relevant adsorption mechanism. The contact angle measurement showed that AATS can increase the contact angle of the scheelite surface from 41.7 to 95.8°, greatly enhancing the hydrophobicity of the mineral surface. The results of FTIR analysis and zeta-potential measurement explained that AATS was electrostatically adsorbed on the mineral surface, and DFT calculation further verified that the -N+H3-positive group in AATS was adsorbed on the negatively charged scheelite surface. Therefore, AATS can realize the expectation of high efficiency and selectivity of minerals and enhance the adhesion between the surface of scheelite minerals and bubbles, providing a fresh approach to industrial production.

Microscopic Perspective of the Combined Collector CTAB/SPA on the Flotation Separation of Fluorite and Calcite: Adsorption Morphology and Interaction Force

Abstract:It is difficult to separate fluorite and calcite due to their similar surface properties. This article applied combined collector cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)/styrene phosphonic acid (SPA) to separate fluorite from calcite and explored the adsorption morphology and interaction force. Flotation results indicated that effective separation between fluorite and calcite with CTAB/SPA at a molar ratio of 1:1, at the concentration of 1×10−4 mol/L and pH 11.0. Surface tension measurements indicated a synergistic effect of CTAB/SPA in solution. The combined collector increased the hydrophobicity difference between fluorite and calcite surfaces. Zeta potential measurements illustrated that both CTAB and SPA adsorbed on fluorite and calcite surfaces, with CTAB as the main collector. Atomic force microscope (AFM) analysis further demonstrated that more CTAB/SPA adsorbed on fluorite surface than that on the calcite surface, resulting in a stronger hydrophobic force between fluorite particles. It was concluded that CTAB, as the main collector in the combined collector, adsorbed on the fluorite surface, while SPA interspersed between the CTAB molecules, with an adsorption model proposed. These macroscopic and microscopic points provide a possibility for the flotation separation between fluorite and calcite.
Study on the Reverse Flotation Separation of Smithsonite from Dolomite Using the Saponified 2-(4,4-Dimethylpentan-2-yl)-5,7,7-trimethyloctanoic Acid as a Collector

Abstract:Dolomite, a prominent calcium-bearing gangue mineral found in carbonate-type zinc oxide ores, poses a significant challenge for effective flotation separation alongside smithsonite due to their highly similar surface properties. The present study explores the potential of 2-(4,4-dimethylpentan-2-yl)-5,7,7-trimethyloctanoic acid (2-DMPT) as a collector for the reverse flotation of smithsonite from dolomite. Micro-flotation experiments indicated that saponified 2-DMPT exhibited superior collecting ability and selectivity for dolomite over smithsonite under highly alkaline conditions. Specifically, the flotation recovery of dolomite reached 62%, whereas only 6% of smithsonite was recovered in the flotation foam products. Zeta potential and attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) analysis revealed that changes in pH values had minimal influence on the collector's adsorption onto dolomite, while significantly hindering its adsorption on the smithsonite surface. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that 2-DMPT could form hydrophobic complexes with the active Ca2+ sites on the dolomite surface at pH 11.5. However, the interaction between smithsonite and carboxylic groups of 2-DMPT under the same conditions was relatively weaker, facilitating their reverse flotation separation. As a result, 2-DMPT shows promise as a potential collector for the reverse flotation process, effectively removing dolomite from smithsonite and reducing acid consumption in subsequent acid-leaching processes.
