Abstract:The concentrate grade in chalcopyrite flotation is often compromised by the associated inherently floatable gangue such as graphite. In this study, eco-friendly xanthan gum (XG) was introduced as a graphite depressant in the flotation of chalcopyrite. Single minerals flotation showed that XG strongly reduced the floatability of graphite at pH 7.5 with no significant effect on the flotation of chalcopyrite. Mixed minerals flotation showed that the addition of 20 mg/L XG increased copper grade and selectivity index by 16.83% and 14.23, respectively. This selective depressing behavior of XG was due to the strong affinity between XG and graphite as well as the weak interaction between XG and chalcopyrite, as suggested by electrokinetic and adsorption measurements. FTIR and XPS analyses indicated that the adsorption of XG on the graphite surface could be governed by physical adsorption mechanisms. Furthermore, since the contribution of hydrogen bonding interaction was insignificant, hydrophobic interaction was considered as the dominant driving force in the adsorption process. This investigation demonstrates the promising potential of XG for graphite depression and may contribute to the greening of chalcopyrite flotation process.

Abstract:In this study, lead ion was combined with water glass to separate scheelite from calcite using flotation. The effects and underlying mechanisms of the liquid and solid phases generated in this combined depressant (Pb-water glass, a mixture of lead ion and water glass) on the flotation performance of scheelite and calcite were investigated through micro-flotation experiments, X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer measurements, fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) analysis, zeta potential measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests. The flotation results indicate that the selective flotation separation of scheelite from calcite results from the liquid phase, not the solid phase. The XRD and FTIR results indicate that under different mass ratios of lead ion to water glass, the solid phases are the leadsilicate with amorphous structures, while the UV-Vis results reveal significant absorption differences in the liquid phases under different mass ratios of lead ion to water glass. The zeta potential and XPS results indicate that less metal silicate polymers are adsorbed on the scheelite surface than on the calcite surface, allowing NaOL to be adsorbed on the scheelite surface, but not on the calcite surface, and selective flotation separation of scheelite from calcite is therefore achieved. XPS results further reveal that the metal silicate polymers in the liquid phase are adsorbed on both mineral surfaces by firstly breaking the Ca-O group and then reacting with the Ca active sites.

Abstract:As a typical iron-containing silicate, it is challenging to separate chlorite from specularite owing to their similar density, magnetic and surface physicochemical characteristics. Gum arabic (GA) was used as selective depressant for the separation of specularite from chlorite using dodecylamine (DDA) as the collector to resolve this issue. Moreover, the depressing mechanism of GA was investigated using flotation experiments, adsorption amounts measurement, Zeta potential detection, contact angle measurement, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The single-mineral flotation results indicated that the recovery of specularite and chlorite reached 22.1% and 82.4%, respectively, with 90 mg/L GA and 20 mg/L DDA at pH=8. Furthermore, artificial mixed ore flotation test verified the selective depressing effect of GA on specularite. Surface adsorption, contact angle, and Zeta potential studies all indicated that GA has a more affinity for adhering to the surface of specularite than chlorite, and that pro-adsorbed GA inhibits the following adsorption of DDA, which reduces specularite's capacity to float. The FT-IR and XPS analysis results demonstrated that GA adsorbs on the surface of specularite mainly via chemisorption, and the hydroxyl groups of GA interact with iron sites on the mineral surface to form metal chelates.

Exploration of a novel depressant pullulan gum for the flotation separation of specularite from aegirite

Abstract:The successful separation of specularite and aegirite in the flotation process heavily relies on efficient depressants due to their closely similar physical and chemical properties. This study focuses on investigating the specific depressive impact and mechanism of pullulan gum (PG) on specularite and aegirite. The findings from single mineral flotation tests revealed the maximum floatability difference was 49.7 percentage point when pH was 8 and the dosage of PG and DDA were 90 mg/L and 30 mg/L respectively, which indicated that PG selectively depressed specularite while displaying a notably weaker depression effect on aegirite. The selective depressive impact of PG was further affirmed through artificial mineral mixed mineral flotation tests. Additionally, results derived from contact angle measurement, adsorption capacity measurement, Zeta potential measurement, and FT-IR analysis collectively highlighted the significantly higher affinity of PG to the surface of specularite compared to aegirite. This stronger interaction between PG and specularite obstructed the adsorption of DDA onto the latter mineral. Moreover, XPS analysis provided insights indicating that PG chemically adsorbs onto the specularite surface, forming a Fe-O complex via a potential reaction between OH and Fe site. As a result of these comprehensive findings, PG emerges as a promising novel depressant for effectively separating specularite from aegirite.

Abstract:Due to the similar physical and chemical properties of ilmenite and olivine, separating them is challenging. The flotation process, with the use of collectors, is an effective method. In this study, a ternary collector consisting of aluminum ion (III), benzohydroxamic acid (BHA), and sodium oleate (NaOL) was prepared for the flotation separation of ilmenite and olivine. Through micro-flotation experiments, molecular dynamics simulation (MD), density functional theory (DFT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) analysis, the synergistic effect between the components of the ternary collector and the adsorption configuration on the surface of ilmenite was investigated. The results revealed that at pH = 8, Al (III), BHA, and NaOL could coordinate and adsorb effectively on the surface of ilmenite, enhancing its floatability for separation from olivine. The adsorption configuration differed from previous reports, showing a co-adsorption of multiple forms on the surface of ilmenite.

Abstract:The separation of specularite from aegirite is challenging due to the similar floatability. Surface dissolution of minerals often occurs and affects their physicochemical properties. In order to investigate the effect of dissolved aegirite species on the separation of specularite and aegirite, the separation performance of these two minerals was explored through surface pretreatment before froth flotation. The adsorption mechanism was investigated via Zeta potential measurements, scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. Single mineral flotation experiments indicated that acidified pretreatment significantly reduced the floatability of aegirite (from 78.4% to 15.1%) and specularite (from 88.7% to 38.4%) at pH 10 with 6 × 10-5 mol/L dodecylamine. The alkalified pretreatment only affected the flotation of aegirite (from 78.4% to 16.3%) at pH 10, while specularite maintained its floatability (85.4%). Mixed mineral flotation results confirmed that specularite was depressed while aegirite recovered its floatability with alkalified pretreatment. Zeta potential measurements and SEM analyses indicated that surface element dissolution occurred on the pretreated mineral surface, which increased the positive electrical property of minerals and weakened the adsorption of the dodecylamine. XPS results further revealed that the Si and Fe dissolved from the alkalified aegirite surface formed SiO32-, Fe(OH)3, and FeOOH at the specularite surface, which depressed the flotation of specularite.

Abstract:Tragacanth gum (TG) was explored as a depressant to realize the flotation separation of molybdenite and talc. The flotation experiments indicated that when using potassium butyl xanthate (PBX) as a collector, molybdenite showed excellent floatability while talc was completely depressed by TG, thus realizing the flotation separation of the two minerals. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis results showed that TG was adsorbed on molybdenite surface via chemisorption. The results of contact angle measurement, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) indicated that the pre-adsorption of TG on molybdenite could not hinder the further chemisorption of PBX on molybdenite. Because PBX has no collecting ability on talc, the flotation separation of molybdenite and talc came true using PBX to collect molybdenite and TG to depress talc.

Abstract:Flotation separation of smithsonite (ZnCO3) from calcite (CaCO3) is not commonly satisfied using traditional fatty acids, and thus, more selective collectors are required. In this regard, a new collector, N-hexadecanoylglycine (C16Gly) was used to selectively collect ZnCO3 from CaCO3 in this work. The flotation selectivity of C16Gly was predicted by DFT calculations. The calculation results showed that the C16Gly anion adsorbed on the ZnCO3/CaCO3 surface via two Zn–O/Ca–O bonds. Moreover, as the new Zn–O bonds were more covalent than Ca–O bonds, the adsorption of C16Gly on the ZnCO3 surface was more stable. Therefore, this collector may be used as a specific collector for ZnCO3 rather than for CaCO3. The DFT results were confirmed by experimental results. Single-mineral flotation and contact angle results both suggested that C16Gly efficiently floated ZnCO3 rather than CaCO3 at pH ≥ 10. As for the 1:1 ZnCO3 and CaCO3 mixture, the Zn recovery was much higher than that of CaO with 3 × 10-4 mol/L of collector at pH 10, and the separation efficiency reached 64.53% under the same conditions. XPS analysis revealed that Zn/Ca atoms on ZnCO3/CaCO3 surface were involved in the reaction of C16Gly with the mineral surface. In addition, a good coverage of C16Gly on the ZnCO3 surface was observed by the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry system. In contrast, this collector was not found on the CaCO3 surface due to its poor adsorption capacity. These experimental results confirmed that C16Gly is a promising collector for the selective flotation of ZnCO3 from CaCO3 and DFT calculations are a powerful tool to predict the flotation behavior of C16Gly for the ZnCO3–CaCO3 system.

Abstract:Separation of chalcopyrite from galena in a low-alkaline environment is a critical technological process. This study explores the mechanism of the selective flotation depression effect of locust bean gum (LBG) toward galena. This natural polymer is applied for the first time to improve the selectivity of chalcopyrite/galena flotation. After the addition of 5-mg/L LBG at pH 8.0, the recovery of galena using sodium butyl xanthate as a collector drops below 10%, whereas the recovery of chalcopyrite remains over 80%. The selectivity of LBG toward galena is further characterized by adsorption tests, zeta potential measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. The interaction mechanism that drives the adsorption process may be the hydrogen bonding between the hydroxylated mineral surface acting as a Brønsted acid and –OH groups from LBG polymer acting as a Brønsted base.

Abstract:The pivotal roles of Cu and Mo in industrial applications accentuate the importance of effectively separating and recovering chalcopyrite and molybdenite. They commonly exist together in natural environments, necessitating their segregation prior to engaging in smelting processes. The separation is mainly accomplished through flotation. The inadequate comprehension of the mechanisms of thiol depressants, commonly used in the separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite, poses challenges to both resource recovery and the development of depressants. Based on the bulk flotation practice of copper-molybdenum sulfide minerals, this study investigated the separation effect and mechanism of sodium thioglycolate (STG) on xanthate-treated chalcopyrite and molybdenite. Flotation and contact angle tests validate that STG enhances the hydrophilicity of chalcopyrite surfaces, leading to an 83.79% flotation separation efficiency for molybdenite. Various methodologies were employed to explore the mechanism of the depressant, encompassing open-circuit potential measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, classical molecular dynamics and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The stable adsorption layer of STG is established by the interaction of thiol groups from STG with Cu and Fe sites on the chalcopyrite surface, resulting in the formation of Cu(I)-S and Fe(III)-S structures. The adsorption density of STG layer on the chalcopyrite surface is four times greater than that on molybdenite. Additionally, following the adsorption of STG, the previously adsorbed xanthate chalcopyrite surface is desorbed with an efficiency of 65.88%. These findings contribute to the elucidation of the mechanistic understanding of thiol-containing depressants in the flotation separation process of copper-molybdenum sulfide minerals and establish a basis for the prospective advancement of mineral processing reagents.

Abstract:The surface properties of fluorite and barite are similar, which results in agent action behaviour that is also similar. it is essential to use a highly selective agent in order to achieve effective separation of the two minerals. In this study, an environmentally friendly surfactant, caprylhydroxamic acid (CHA), was found as an effective collector for flotation separation of fluorite and barite. The results of microflotation experiments show that CHA can achieve effective separation of fluorite and barite with excellent selectivity without the addition of depressants. FT-IR, contact angle measurement, XPS, SEM-EDS measurement and AFM measurement results indicated that the interaction between CHA and fluorite was strong, whereas the adsorption of CHA on barite was weak. CHA is chemically acted on the surface of fluorite mainly through the Ca-O bond. DFT calculations show that the adsorption model of CHA on fluorite surface has lower adsorption energy compared to the adsorption model on barite surface. In the fluorite adsorption model, the electron density surrounding the O atoms is higher, indicating that the CHA adsorption effect is more obvious.

Abstract:The flotation separation of galena from sphalerite was commonly implemented under pH > 10.5, which led to the consumption of lime. In this paper, 2-diethylamine-4-hydroxy-1,3,5-triazine-6-thiol (DEHTT) was synthesized and introduced as a highly selective collector to perform the depressant-free flotation separation of Pb/Zn sulfide minerals. The microflotation results indicated that 8.0 × 10-7 mol/L DEHTT recovered 94.17% galena and 26.67% sphalerite from their mixture at pH 8.5 regulated by Na2CO3, and under the same conditions, sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) floated out 94.94% galena and 50.41% sphalerite, deducing a superior flotation selectivity of DEHTT in comparison to SIBX. In situ AFM images displayed the more preferable adsorption of DEHTT on galena in comparison to that on sphalerite. The results of adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics inferred that the adsorption of DEHTT onto the galena surface was a spontaneous endothermic chemical process. XPS further indicated that DEHTT combined with interface Pb atoms to form the -S-Pb and -O-Pb bonds. The special affinity of DEHTT to galena achieved the selective flotation separation of galena from sphalerite without the addition of lime and depressants.
Enhanced Chalcopyrite-Galena separation through Galena-Assisted ferric ion reduction in Fenton reaction

Abstract:Developing an efficient and eco-friendly approach for the separation of chalcopyrite and galena is crucial for maximizing the resource utilization. This study explores the use of galena-assisted Fenton reaction as a method for depressing galena flotation. Various analytical techniques, including micro-flotation tests, contact angle (CA) measurements, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observation, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) studies, Raman Spectra determinations, electrochemical analysis, and UV–visible spectrophotometer (UV–vis) surveying, were employed to investigate the effectiveness of this approach. The results of the flotation tests reveal that the cooperation of ferric ions and hydrogen peroxide can strongly and selectively depress galena. The CA and FT-IR analyses demonstrate the significant decrease of hydrophobicity and collector adsorption of the galena surface by the synergistic effect of ferric ions and hydrogen peroxide. Further analysis using SEM, XPS, Raman spectra and electrochemical analysis show that galena can reduce ferric ions to ferrous ions, creating a Fenton reaction system upon the addition of hydrogen peroxide. The galena surface is intensely oxidized by the generated hydroxyl radicals, leading to the production of a compact layer of PbSO 4 . These findings provide a promising solution for the efficient and environmentally responsible separation of chalcopyrite and galena.

Abstract:Dolomite, a prominent calcium-bearing gangue mineral found in carbonate-type zinc oxide ores, poses a significant challenge for effective flotation separation alongside smithsonite due to their highly similar surface properties. The present study explores the potential of 2-(4,4-dimethylpentan-2-yl)-5,7,7-trimethyloctanoic acid (2-DMPT) as a collector for the reverse flotation of smithsonite from dolomite. Micro-flotation experiments indicated that saponified 2-DMPT exhibited superior collecting ability and selectivity for dolomite over smithsonite under highly alkaline conditions. Specifically, the flotation recovery of dolomite reached 62%, whereas only 6% of smithsonite was recovered in the flotation foam products. Zeta potential and attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) analysis revealed that changes in pH values had minimal influence on the collector's adsorption onto dolomite, while significantly hindering its adsorption on the smithsonite surface. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that 2-DMPT could form hydrophobic complexes with the active Ca2+ sites on the dolomite surface at pH 11.5. However, the interaction between smithsonite and carboxylic groups of 2-DMPT under the same conditions was relatively weaker, facilitating their reverse flotation separation. As a result, 2-DMPT shows promise as a potential collector for the reverse flotation process, effectively removing dolomite from smithsonite and reducing acid consumption in subsequent acid-leaching processes.

Abstract:Pullulan (PL), an eco-friendly and efficient reagent, was studied as a depressant in the separation of galena and sphalerite. Its depression mechanism was studied through zeta potential measurement, contact angle measurement, reagent adsorption and XPS measurement. Micro-flotation experiment showed that PL was an effective depressant for sphalerite. Artificial mixed mineral experiment resulted in a Pb concentrate with a recovery of 86.11% and a grade of 69.82% Pb and a Zn concentrate with a recovery of 84.25% and a grade of 57.21% Zn when the PL concentration was 20 mg/L. Zeta potential and XPS measurements showed that PL was adsorbed on sphalerite and galena surface by hydrogen bonding and the adsorption on sphalerite surface was stronger than that of galena. Contact angle measurement and reagent adsorption demonstrated that PL prevented the adsorption of collector on the surface of sphalerite but had no effect on galena.

Abstract:Considering that smithsonite has a similar crystal structure to calcite, more selective collectors are required to achieve its flotation separation. In this study, a new collector, cupferron, was used for the selective flotation of smithsonite from calcite. Results of the microflotation test showed that the flotation recovery of smithsonite was 90.45 % at pH 8.0 with 10 × 10 −4 mol/L of cupferron, whereas the flotation recovery of calcite was lower than 15.00 %. The FTIR results demonstrated that the cupferron was chemisorbed on the surface of smithsonite through a five-membered chelate ring formed with zinc atoms, whereas the adsorption on the surface of calcite was weak. The results of the zeta potential test further indicated that the cupferron was adsorbed selectively on the surface of smithsonite, whereas almost no adsorption was observed on the surface of calcite. In addition, the adsorption amount test results illustrated that the adsorption amount of cupferron on the surface of smithsonite was higher than that on the surface of calcite, which led to the difference in the flotation recovery of smithsonite and calcite under the same conditions. The results of the DFT study proved that the adsorption energy of cupferron acting on the surface of smithsonite is lower than that on the calcite surface. Moreover, the stronger covalent nature of Zn-O 2 bonds than Ca-O 2 bonds is responsible for the selective collection of smithsonite from calcite by cupferron. Therefore, cupferron can be applied as a potential collector for the flotation separation of smithsonite from calcite. Meanwhile, this study also provides a reference for the development of collectors for the flotation separation of smithsonite and calcite.

Abstract:▪ 3-amyl-4-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione was used in separation of CuFeS2 and PbS.▪ The Ksp of CuAATT and Pb(AATT)2 was measured as 10-16.17 and 10-20.60.▪ The CuAATT complex was more insoluble than Pb(AATT)2.▪ AATT returned a bigger adsorption affinity to chalcopyrite than to galena.▪ AATT realized an efficient flotation separation of CuFeS2 from PbS at pH > 11.5.3-Amyl-4-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione (AATT) reacted with Cu2+ or Pb2+ ions in aqueous solutions to form CuAATT and Pb(AATT)2 complexes and their solubility product constants were measured as 10-16.17 and 10-20.60, respectively. In the moderately-alkaline media, both chalcopyrite and galena chemisorbed AATT on to their surfaces, and the adsorption amount of AATT on chalcopyrite was bigger than that on galena, which rendered a stronger hydrophobization toward chalcopyrite. While under the high-alkaline pulp, AATT only chemisorbed on chalcopyrite, not on galena. The micro-flotation findings indicated that AATT was a favorable collector for flotation enrichment of chalcopyrite and galena at pH < 11.0, and realized an efficient flotation separation of chalcopyrite from galena under pH >11.5. Selective Flotation Separation of Fluorite from Calcite Using Mixed Anionic/cationic Collectors

Abstract:In this study, anionic/cationic collector sodium oleate (NaOL) mixed with dodecylamine (DDA) and salted water glass were used to separate fluorite from calcite. The flotation separation performance and underlying mechanism were researched by micro-flotation experiments, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, wettability analysis, fluorescence spectrum analysis and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Micro-flotation experiment results show that the mixed anionic/cationic collectors (NaOL: DDA = 9:1) have strong flotation selectivity for two minerals, and the salted water glass can selectively depress calcite. This combined reagent system can achieve the separation of fluorite and calcite. The FTIR measurement results show that NaOL and DDA are co-adsorbed on the surface of fluorite, whereas only NaOL is adsorbed on the surface of calcite. The wettability analysis results show that the salted water glass hinders the adsorption of mixed collectors on the surface of calcite and selectively inhibits its flotation. The fluorescence spectrum analysis results show that the mixed collectors can produce large micelles, reduce the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and obtain greater molecular activity compared with a single collector. The AFM imaging results shows that single NaOL is uniformly adsorbed on the surface of fluorite. When using the mixed collectors, DDA molecules are interspersed amongst the molecules of NaOL to increase the hydrophobic end and make the surface of fluorite more hydrophobic. Based on these analyses, an adsorption model of the mixed collector NaOL/DDA on the mineral surface was drawn, which showed that the mixed collector produced a strong synergistic effect compared with a single collector. Therefore, it is more conducive to the separation of fluorite and calcite.

Abstract:Coal gangue (CG), an industrial solid waste with high contents of Li and Ga, has attracted the attention of researchers. However, the utilization of CG remains an economic challenge. Pre-enrichment of Li and Ga by flotation was carried out with a view to improving the comprehensive utilization of CG. Mineral composition, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), and elemental composition were used to investigate the embeddedness of each mineral and the mode of elemental occurrence in the CG. The results showed that the main mineral compositions of the CG were kaolinite, quartz, and pyrite. Li and Ga were mainly associated with kaolinite and other clay minerals. Li and Ga had a high correlation with Al2O3 and SiO2, while Li and Ga were highly correlated with SiO2/Al2O3, indicating that Li and Ga may be associated with one or more high-alumina minerals. In addition, flotation tests proved that synergistic sorting of ash impurities and valuable components from the CG was a cost-effective method. The ash content of the final product was increased by 3% under the process of prediscarding concentrate-dissociation-secondary flotation, and the contents of Li and Ga in the final product were also slightly enriched, and the recovery rate of the carrier minerals of Li and Ga can reach 66.1%.
