Abstract:Stability is a basic requirement of power system. The response of power system to a stochastic disturbance is also a stochastic process. At this point, stability conditions of the stochastic process are to be given by probability or statistics, and usually defined through the convergence of the norm of the dynamic response. Meanwhile, the convergence of the stochastic process can be defined in different senses, so can the stochastic stability. This chapter introduces several common definition modes (i.e., the mean stability, mean square stability, and asymptotic stability) to demonstrate associated theorems.

Abstract:The mechanism of static voltage stability was examined by a visual explanation, in that way, the static voltage stability criterion was obtained. It was indicated that the static voltage stability is determined by both characteristics in generation side and characteristics in load side. Then each kind of two-dimensional plane analysis can be unified in three-dimensional space. It is pointed that both critical voltage and voltage stability margin should be use for indexes. The impact of load model on static voltage stability is discussed by both deterministic and probabilistic analysis method.

Abstract:Randomness exists extensively in nature, engineering and social systems, the power system not excepted.Randomness has gradually taken into consideration in power system analysis since the 1970s, with emphasis on analysis of steady-state random problems while research on power system dynamics is still based on the deterministic theory.In recent years, with increasing integration of typical sets of stochastic sources into power systems, such as the large-scale renewable power generation and electric vehicles, the influence of randomness on power system dynamics can no longer be neglected.For this reason, a research framework is proposed for stochastic dynamics of power system focusing on dynamic problems under the action of randomness, including stochastic dynamic modelling, stochastic dynamic responses, stochastic stability, stochastic dynamic security and stochastic optimum control of power system.Some suggestions are given for the research.

Abstract:Renewable energy and electric vehicles have become involved in power systems, which has attracted researchers to stochastic continuous disturbances (SDEs). This paper addresses stochastic analysis issues for the stability of a power system with losses under SDEs. Firstly, the quasi-Hamiltonian models of power systems with losses under SDEs are given. Secondly, a novel analytical method is proposed to analyze the stability of the power system with losses under SDEs based on the stochastic averaging method. Thirdly, comparisons of stability probability under different parameters are performed, from which insights to improve the stability probability of power systems with losses under SDEs can be obtained. Even though it is challenging to assess the stability of a power system with losses under SDEs, the proposed method in this paper could serve well in this regard.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel method to analyze impacts of uncertain variability on power system dynamics. There is considerable interest in integrating intermittent renewable energy and plug-in electric vehicles into power systems. Therefore, power systems are in an environment with increasing uncertain variability. In this paper, the uncertain variability is described as a continuous-time stochastic process, and thus, the power system under uncertain variability is modeled by stochastic differential equations. To quantify impacts of uncertain variability on power system dynamics, an intra-region probability index is presented. Based on the stochastic averaging method, an analytical method is proposed to calculate the intra-region probability. Compared to Monte Carlo simulation, the proposed method is many orders of magnitude faster without sacrificing the result accuracy. Furthermore, several insights are given to improve the power system dynamics under uncertain variability.

Abstract:With the growing integration of renewable power generation, plug-in electric vehicles, and other sources of uncertainty, increasing stochastic continuous disturbances are brought to power systems. The impact of stochastic continuous disturbances on power system transient stability attracts significant attention. To address this problem, this paper proposes an analytical assessment method for transient stability of multimachine power systems under stochastic continuous disturbances. In the proposed method, a probability measure of transient stability is presented and analytically solved by stochastic averaging. Compared with the conventional method (Monte Carlo simulation), the proposed method is many orders of magnitude faster, which makes it very attractive in practice when many plans for transient stability must be compared or when transient stability must be analyzed quickly. Also, it is found that the evolution of system energy over time is almost a simple diffusion process by the proposed method, which explains the impact mechanism of stochastic continuous disturbances on transient stability in theory.

Abstract:For the quantitative analysis of voltage stability,especially for meeting the requirement of adaptation to its probabilistic analysis,a generalized margin index for static voltage stability (SVS) is proposed. The index can be employed to qualitatively judge the stability and quantitatively describe the degree of instability. The two-point estimate method was introduced into the probabilistic analysis of SVS. With regard to the uncertainty of parameters of power sources and load in power systems,the generalized index of the power difference margin was regarded as a stochastic variable to be solved. Its statistical characteristic values,such as the mean value and the standard deviation,were calculated so as to obtain the probability of the static voltage stability. The results of a calculation example were compared with those of the Monte-Carlo simulation method. It is concluded that the proposed method is valid,and that it can greatly save time while maintaining an equivalent precision.

Abstract:Traditionally, power system security means the ability of a power system to withstand sudden disturbances. To be specific, under dynamic conditions, the power system can withstand sudden disturbances and continuously provide users with the power and electric energy. It should be noted that the impact of stochastic property was seldom considered on the traditional power system security. Taking into account the stochastic property of the power system, the meaning of security needs to be expanded. Firstly, the disturbance includes not only "sudden disturbance" (e.g., a sudden short circuit), but also "continuous disturbances" (e.g., a stochastic disturbance). Secondly, the security assessment is not a deterministic problem, but a stochastic one. An index of security is not a deterministic one, but a probability one. The stochastic security of a power system in this chapter refers to the ability of a power system to withstand various disturbances. The disturbances described here include both traditional sudden disturbances and stochastic continuous disturbances. Essentially, the security requires the operating status and certain indexes of the system are maintained within certain ranges. To be specific, the system should be operated in an reliable area, such as maintaining the grid frequency and voltage within the normal level. In this chapter, "bound fluctuation region" which means the reliable range of the system under stochastic disturbances in engineering, is proposed and investigated. However, the problem of "dimensionality disaster" may occur if the states of the system are directly analyzed for the bound fluctuation region. In this chapter, the studies based on the system energy function are carried out for the bound fluctuation region, in which the high-dimension system state vector is simplified into a one-dimension value (i.e., system energy). Moreover, a quantitative analysis method is carried out for the bound fluctuation region.

Abstract:With the increasing integration of renewable power and electric vehicles,more and more stochastic factors are in power generation and load, thus the unbalanced stochastic power fluctuations (stochastic excitations) are increasing obviously. There are incessant stochastic excitations in power system, thus it is important to access their impacts on power system. Because the intensity of stochastic excitations is not enough to system instability, if the study of power system under stochastic excitations is focused on the stability, the study may lack engineering practices for the moment. Firstly, the bounded fluctuations region and intra-region probability were proposed to access the impacts of the stochastic excitations. Then, with the energy function method, the relationship between the multi-dimensional vector and the hyperplane was simplified to the relationship between the energy and the energy boundary. Moreover, based on the stochastic averaging method of quasi Hamiltonian system, the analytic method of solving intra-region probability was proposed. Compared with the results of Monte Carlo method, the results of analytic method fit well and the analytic method consumes less time. Finally, after comparing the instability probability to the intra-region probability of the bounded fluctuations region, it is verified that power system bounded fluctuations region has more practical value.

Abstract:Transient stability analysis of stochastic power system with Monte Carlo simulations demands vast calculation tasks. A novel transient stability analysis method for stochastic power system based on quasi-Hamiltonian system stochastic averaging and EEAC combined method was proposed in this paper. Firstly, the stochastic power system was equivalent with a two-machine system. The stochastic differential algebraic equations model of the equivalent system was established. The transient energy of the corresponding Hamiltonian system was derived. The security region of the system was determined by the critical transient energy. Then, the stochastic averaging method was applied to analyze the quasi-Hamiltonian system. The averaged system and averaged equations were got. The diffusion process of the power system transient energy is studied by the diffusion equation theory. The conditional reliability function was governed by the backward Kolmogorov equation. The impacts of excitation amplitude, fault type and fault clearing time on transient stability can be investigated quantitatively. This method was applied in the four-generator and two-area system to verify its effectiveness. Simulations show that the results coincide with the Monte Carlo method well.

Abstract:Probabilistic small signal stability analysis is useful to quantify the effect of uncertain parameters, such as the solar and wind generations, on system stability margin. In the literature, a semi-analytic method based on general polynomial chaos expansion (gPCE) has been proposed for probabilistic small signal stability analysis. The gPCE method can achieve high order accuracy with lower computation burden, but it needs a predefined probability distribution of random parameters, which may not be available in practical engineering applications. To reduce such dependency on the full information of probability distribution, this paper presents a data-driven polynomial chaos expansion (DD-PCE) method for assessing the impact of uncertain solar irradiance on the stability margin of a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system. In the proposed method, the system stability margin is characterized in terms of its critical mode damping ratio, and the functional relationship between the critical mode damping ratio and the uncertain solar irradiance is estimated by orthonormal polynomial expansion. The orthonormal polynomial basis is constructed using the moments of solar irradiance, and the coefficients of the orthonormal polynomial expansion are calculated by the collocation points of polynomial basis. The efficiency of the proposed method is validated by comparisons with gPCE method and Monte Carlo method.

Abstract:Wind generation is growing fast worldwide. The stochastic variation of large-scale wind generation may impact the power systems in almost every aspect. Probabilistic analysis method is an effective tool to study power systems with random factors. In this paper, a systematic nonlinear analytical probabilistic method is proposed to evaluate the possible effect of random wind power generation on power system small signal stability. A second-order polynomial is proposed to approximate the nonlinear relationship between the wind generation and the damping of a particular dynamic mode, such as the dominant mode. Gaussian mixture model formulates wind uncertainty in a uniform way. Spectral theorem is adopted to reshape the second-order polynomial into a form without cross-product terms. Cholesky decomposition is used to eliminate correlations among outputs of different wind farms. Thereafter the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the damping ratio with respect to random wind power is consequently constructed. Numerical simulations are carried out in the IEEE standard test system. The proposed method is verified with higher accuracy than the traditional linearized method. Meanwhile, it is much more time-saving in calculation than Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:The uncertainty of the power system is gradually increasing. How to reasonably characterize the uncertainties and accurately analyze the impact on power system is a prominent issue for current and future researches. By comparing various uncertainty representations and focusing on interval uncertainty, the power system uncertain problems are divided into two categories of steady state interval analysis and dynamic interval analysis. Firstly, the interval prediction framework and method of uncertain factors in power system analysis are elaborated. Secondly, for the interval steady state problems, existing methods are reviewed and discussed from two perspectives of interval power flow and interval decision-making problems. Then, for the interval dynamic problems, existing interval analysis methods are reviewed and discussed from two perspectives of dynamic fluctuation and dynamic stability. Finally, the prospect of power system analysis considering interval uncertainty is discussed.

Abstract:This paper proposes a method of probabilistic analysis to investigate the impact of stochastic uncertainty of grid-connected wind generation on power system small-signal stability. The proposed method is “analytical” in contrast to the numerical method of Monte Carlo simulation which relies on large number of random computations. It can directly calculate the probabilistic density function (PDF) of critical eigenvalues of a large-scale power system from the PDF of grid-connected multiple sources of wind power generation, thus to determine the probabilistic small-signal stability of the power system as affected by the wind generation. In the paper, an example of 16-machine power system with three grid-connected wind farms is used to demonstrate the application of the proposed method. The results of probabilistic stability analysis of the example power system are confirmed by the Monte Carlo simulation. It is shown that the stochastic variation of grid-connected wind generation can cause the system to lose stability even though the system is stable deterministically. The higher the level of wind penetration is, the more the probability that the system becomes unstable could be. Hence indeed penetration of stochastically variable wind generation threatens stable operation of power systems as far as system small-signal stability is concerned.

Abstract:The ever-increasing penetration of wind power generation and plug-in electric vehicles introduces stochastic continuous disturbances to the power system. This paper proposes an analytical approach to analyze the influence of stochastic continuous disturbances on power system small signal stability. The noise-to-state stability (NSS) and NSS Lyapunov function (NSS-LF) are adopted for stability analysis with respect to the magnitude of uncertainties in a power system. The power system is modeled as a set of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The supremum of the norm of the covariance is employed to characterize the influence of magnitudes of uncertainties on the power system. Then the relationship between the magnitudes of stochastic variations and probabilistic stability is explicitly identified by NSS. The proposed method can assess the stochastic stability of the power system by checking some algebraic expressions. Hence, it has high computation efficiency compared with the well-established Monte Carlo based method. Besides, since the magnitudes of the stochastic variations are integrated into the definition of the stochastic stability, the proposed method provides theoretical explanations for the impacts of uncertainties.

Abstract:Through investigating equilibrium points of a typical power system, this paper shows that voltage stability and angle stability can be linked by the unstable equilibrium points (UEPs) of the system. The unstable mode changes with the power flow mode of the system. The lower part and the other branch of the PV curve contain abundant information about system bifurcating, from which the situation of the UEPs can be learned. The analyzed results indicate that different load model can lead to different system unstable mode. The conclusions are general, and provide deeper understanding of the relationship between voltage stability and angle stability in complex power systems.

Abstract:This paper concerns with the emerging power system stability issues, classification, and research prospects under a high share of renewables and power electronics. The decades-old traditional power system is undergoing a fast transition with two most prominent features: 1) high-penetration of renewable power generators, utilizing intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar, and 2) high-penetration of power electronic devices in the generation e.g., wind turbine converters and solar power inverters, transmission e.g., flexible ac or dc transmission system converters, and distribution/utilization systems e.g., electric vehicle and microgrid. The development of modern power systems with dual high-penetrations, i.e., high-penetrations of renewables and power electronic devices, influences the power system dynamics significantly and causes new stability issues. This paper first overviews equipment-level features and system-level stability challenges introduced under the dual highpenetration scenario of the modern power system. Next, the impacts of emerging stability challenges on various aspects of the classical stability issues and classifications are highlighted. Under this context, this paper discusses the validity and limitations of the existing classical and extended power system stability classifications proposed by different IEEE/Cigre Working Groups. Furthermore, a new power system stability classification framework is proposed, which not only maintains the inherent logic of the classical classification but also provides wide coverage and future adaptability of the emerging stability issues. Finally, various classificationoriented research prospects in the power system stability domain are highlighted.
