Abstract:Stability is a basic requirement of power system. The response of power system to a stochastic disturbance is also a stochastic process. At this point, stability conditions of the stochastic process are to be given by probability or statistics, and usually defined through the convergence of the norm of the dynamic response. Meanwhile, the convergence of the stochastic process can be defined in different senses, so can the stochastic stability. This chapter introduces several common definition modes (i.e., the mean stability, mean square stability, and asymptotic stability) to demonstrate associated theorems.

Abstract:With the growing integration of renewable power generation, plug-in electric vehicles, and other sources of uncertainty, increasing stochastic continuous disturbances are brought to power systems. The impact of stochastic continuous disturbances on power system transient stability attracts significant attention. To address this problem, this paper proposes an analytical assessment method for transient stability of multimachine power systems under stochastic continuous disturbances. In the proposed method, a probability measure of transient stability is presented and analytically solved by stochastic averaging. Compared with the conventional method (Monte Carlo simulation), the proposed method is many orders of magnitude faster, which makes it very attractive in practice when many plans for transient stability must be compared or when transient stability must be analyzed quickly. Also, it is found that the evolution of system energy over time is almost a simple diffusion process by the proposed method, which explains the impact mechanism of stochastic continuous disturbances on transient stability in theory.

Abstract:Transient stability analysis of stochastic power system with Monte Carlo simulations demands vast calculation tasks. A novel transient stability analysis method for stochastic power system based on quasi-Hamiltonian system stochastic averaging and EEAC combined method was proposed in this paper. Firstly, the stochastic power system was equivalent with a two-machine system. The stochastic differential algebraic equations model of the equivalent system was established. The transient energy of the corresponding Hamiltonian system was derived. The security region of the system was determined by the critical transient energy. Then, the stochastic averaging method was applied to analyze the quasi-Hamiltonian system. The averaged system and averaged equations were got. The diffusion process of the power system transient energy is studied by the diffusion equation theory. The conditional reliability function was governed by the backward Kolmogorov equation. The impacts of excitation amplitude, fault type and fault clearing time on transient stability can be investigated quantitatively. This method was applied in the four-generator and two-area system to verify its effectiveness. Simulations show that the results coincide with the Monte Carlo method well.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel method to analyze impacts of uncertain variability on power system dynamics. There is considerable interest in integrating intermittent renewable energy and plug-in electric vehicles into power systems. Therefore, power systems are in an environment with increasing uncertain variability. In this paper, the uncertain variability is described as a continuous-time stochastic process, and thus, the power system under uncertain variability is modeled by stochastic differential equations. To quantify impacts of uncertain variability on power system dynamics, an intra-region probability index is presented. Based on the stochastic averaging method, an analytical method is proposed to calculate the intra-region probability. Compared to Monte Carlo simulation, the proposed method is many orders of magnitude faster without sacrificing the result accuracy. Furthermore, several insights are given to improve the power system dynamics under uncertain variability.

Abstract:Renewable energy and electric vehicles have become involved in power systems, which has attracted researchers to stochastic continuous disturbances (SDEs). This paper addresses stochastic analysis issues for the stability of a power system with losses under SDEs. Firstly, the quasi-Hamiltonian models of power systems with losses under SDEs are given. Secondly, a novel analytical method is proposed to analyze the stability of the power system with losses under SDEs based on the stochastic averaging method. Thirdly, comparisons of stability probability under different parameters are performed, from which insights to improve the stability probability of power systems with losses under SDEs can be obtained. Even though it is challenging to assess the stability of a power system with losses under SDEs, the proposed method in this paper could serve well in this regard.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient approach to study transient stability of power system under uncertain conditions. This approach comprises generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) expansion techniques, by which random variables are approximated, and Galerkin method, by which the approximating coefficients are worked out. This approach transfers stochastic problems into deterministic ones, which calls for computation for only once. When independent random variables are less, this approach can be more efficient than the Monte Carlo simulation(MCs) method. The precision of this approach is verified by the case studies in a 9 bus system.

Abstract:Uncertainty analysis of power system time-domain simulation is mainly concerned with the study of the influence of uncertainty factors in power system on time-domain simulation results.It provides an important reference for analyzing the transient stability of power system under uncertain conditions.A method based on generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) is proposed for uncertainty analysis of time-domain simulation. Approximately, the method assumes that there exists a polynomial relationship between variables and random factors at any time.The solution procedure is as follows.Firstly,the optimal orthogonal polynomial basis function is acquired to approximate the random input variables and unknown variables. Then,by Galerkin method,the stochastic equations which describe the system's transient process are transformed into the corresponding deterministic equations. Finally, by solving these equations, the polynomial approximation coefficients of unknown variables are obtained,which can be used to calculate the statistical results and probability distribution of relevant variables at any time.Case study results from a single-machine infinite bus (SMIB)system and IEEE 9-bus system show the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:The paper discusses problems on random perturbations which impact the running stability and the quality of service in the power systems.And for the perturbed power systems stability analysis and stabilization controlling,basic methods based on probabilistic theory and stochastic dynamic system theory are discussed here,including random perturbations modeling,probabilistic stability analysis,the stability index and controlling strategy based on stochastic differential equations of dynamic systems,simulation tests for the stochastic power system,etc.We also present that these investigation results are important supplement for the power systems' classic stability analysis and controlling theory.Some remaining problems and the exploration direction in this field are pointed out at end of the paper.

Abstract:According to the multi-time scale character of power system and based on the CSP(Computational Singular Perturbation) theory, the operation mode of system state variables is divided into fast dynamic component and slow dynamic component. As the fast component always decays to a stable value first, it could be decoupled from the slow one using equivalent transform and its CSP be calculated according to its multi-time scale character. The exhausting fast dynamic component is ignored gradually in the process of numerical integral, making the stiff equation non-stiff. The simulation step is increased at the same time to shorten the simulation time and improve the efficiency. Simulation result shows its effectiveness and practicability, with efficiency increase of 20.6%.

Abstract:Electrical power system is a complicated dynamic system with plenty of random disturbances while this character has been aggravated attributed to the rapid development of renewable energy technology. Under this circumstance, traditional power system transient stability analysis methods may not always be appropriate. Thus, stochastic transient stability analysis has been established by introducing stochastic differential equations to traditional transient stability analysis. Previous studies on stochastic transient stability assessment just provided a preliminary result but failed to assess its accuracy and reliability, which are essential mathematical properties. Based on the theory of probability and statistics, the Monte Carlo simulation is utilised to further improve the numerical simulation method for transient stability evaluation. Two stability assessment indices are proposed: instability probability and expectation of critical clearing time (ECCT). Then, a corresponding method to calculate the indices and their confidence level is proposed. A two-stage adaptive method is introduced to pre-estimate the sample capacity under a given confidence coefficient, so that the corresponding confidence intervals of the indices can be calculated. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated on the three-machine, nine-bus system, which demonstrates that it would be suitable for future hybrid AC/DC power systems with fluctuating renewable energy generations.

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic introduction to the development of a specific topic in power engineering, probabilistic analysis of small-signal stability of power systems. The paper firstly reviews the problem of small-signal stability of power systems and its significant demand for probabilistic analysis. Then the framework of probabilistic analysis of small-signal stability is introduced. Three types of methodologies developed in the past several decades to apply the probabilistic analysis of small-signal stability are presented afterwards, with the aim to show their detailed procedures and distinct characteristics among different approaches. In addition, the applications of probabilistic analysis of small-signal stability in several aspects of power systems are summarized. A comprehensive list of relevant literature is accommodated in the end.
New algorithms for power system steady state stability probability evaluation

Abstract:Two problems exist in the currently used algorithms for evaluation of power system probabilistic steady state stability. The first is that large amount of calculation is required and the second is that it is difficult to obtain high precision results. Solving of these two problems is important in order to develop algorithms for practical use. Three new algorithms which can partially solve these problems are proposed in this paper. They are the second order Taylor expansion sensitivity method, the polynomial curve fitting method and the artificial neural network method. Examples of applying these methods to an 11 bus power system are used to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Details of the proposed methods and the simulation results are given in the paper.

Abstract:This paper presents the basic framework of probabilistic transient stability assessment using Monte Carlo methods. The assessment requires two simulation processes: probability simulation and transient stability simulation of system states associated with fault events. The focus is placed on probability models and Monte Carlo simulation methods. The procedures for two types of studies are provided. The first one is evaluation of average system risk index due to system instability and the second one is determination of a relationship between probability of system instability and a system operation condition for a given fault. The presented method can provide useful information in secure system operation for control centers of utilities. The example given in the paper demonstrates an application of the presented method in an actual power system in Canada.

Abstract:In order to study the influence of stochastic time delay on the small-signal stability of power system,a method for calculating the sensitivity of eigenvalue to time delay is proposed based on damping torque analysis.By using the method of Gram-Charlier expansion,the probability density function of the real part of critical eigenvalue under stochastic time delay is deduced.The proposed method is fast and simple.Then parameter robust tuning for power system stabilizer (PSS) is conducted considering stochastic time delays of wide-area signals.The 2-area 4-generator system model is developed on the co-simulation platform of cyber-physical power system based on OPNET-MATLAB.The correctness of the calculation method for eigenvalue probability density function is verified through Monte Carlo simulation and the influence of different time delay characteristics on the small-signal stability is analyzed.Finally,the effectiveness of robust design method for PSS is verified in the 2-area 4-generator system.

Abstract:Due to the exhaustion of fossil fuel energy and the awareness of environmental protection, the proportion of renewable energy sources (RES) integrated to the grid is increasing rapidly. However, the uncertainty of RES poses great challenges to the stability of power systems. To solve this uncertainty problem, power system small-signal stability analysis is transitioning from deterministic methods to probabilistic methods. Power system stabilizers (PSS) are important components to suppress low-frequency oscillations and improve system dynamic response performance. But there is still a lack of systematic simulation analysis regarding the optimization effect of PSS on probabilistic small-signal stability. In response to this problem, this paper proposes a probabilistic assessment method of small-signal stability based on quantitative PSS analysis. It constructs modified IEEE-14 and IEEE-39 bus systems with RES penetration and presents a joint simulation framework for multi-machine PSS parameter optimization based on the clustered difference mean perturbation particle swarm optimization (CD-PSO) algorithm. Then quantitative analysis is conducted on the impact of PSS integration on small-signal stability under a typical RES penetration rate (20%). Finally, the influence of different RES penetration rates and load levels on small-signal stability of power systems under different PSS scenarios is investigated.

Abstract:The ever-increasing penetration of wind power generation and plug-in electric vehicles introduces stochastic continuous disturbances to the power system. This paper proposes an analytical approach to analyze the influence of stochastic continuous disturbances on power system small signal stability. The noise-to-state stability (NSS) and NSS Lyapunov function (NSS-LF) are adopted for stability analysis with respect to the magnitude of uncertainties in a power system. The power system is modeled as a set of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The supremum of the norm of the covariance is employed to characterize the influence of magnitudes of uncertainties on the power system. Then the relationship between the magnitudes of stochastic variations and probabilistic stability is explicitly identified by NSS. The proposed method can assess the stochastic stability of the power system by checking some algebraic expressions. Hence, it has high computation efficiency compared with the well-established Monte Carlo based method. Besides, since the magnitudes of the stochastic variations are integrated into the definition of the stochastic stability, the proposed method provides theoretical explanations for the impacts of uncertainties.

Abstract:A method of using PSS / E's power flow and dynamic simulation modules to analyze power system voltage stability is presented. The power flow calculation module is used to estimate the power system voltage stability,to calculate the stability margin and to find out the weak voltage stability buses,lines and zones. The state-space simulation module and the extended term simulation module are applied in power system voltage stability dynamic simulation to find out the key factors affecting voltage stability. Calculation of a large power system shows the application of PSS / E in power system voltage stability analysis.

Abstract:A so-called two-point estimation (TPE) method is presented in this paper for power system probabilistic small signal stability (PSSS) analysis. With the development of power systems under open access environment, it is highly desired to investigate power system stability with uncertainties in both system parameters and operating conditions. Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method has been widely used for this purpose. However, this method is very time-consuming. The TPE based method proposed in this paper provides a way to solve this problem to some extent. It estimate the statistical characteristics of random variables with less calculation requirement while keeping enough calculating precision. The TPE based method for the PSSS analysis is outlined. Then, the model as well as the stable indices for power system PSSS are presented. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the simulation results on a 3- generator-9-node power system.
