Abstract:A series of high-resolution CFD simulations as well as experiments were performed to investigate flow and mass transfer of liquid-liquid phases in single and double T-shaped micro-channel networks.Two stable flow patterns were observed,namely slug flow and parallel flow.Liquid-liquid mass transfer rates were measured based on distribution of acetic acid in water and toluene system.Moreover,volume of fluid model(VOF)was used to simulate the generation and development of slug flow and predict slug length.Simulation results agreed well with experimental data.At the same residence time,mass transfer coefficients and extraction efficiency were higher in the double T-mixer than the single one.Tree-shaped networks containing multi-stage T-shaped micro-channel greatly enhanced liquid-liquid mass transfer in micro-channels,and this kind of network was a powerful micro-extraction configuration.

Abstract:Gas-liquid mass transfer is widely used in chemical, pharmaceutical, energy and other fields. Enhancing the gas-liquid mass transfer is helpful to achieve reduction in the various mass transfer equipment size, low emission of harmful gases, energy conservation and environmental protection. Adding solid nanoparticles of the third dispersed phase into the gas-liquid two-phase system is an important method used to enhance gas-liquid mass transfer. Enhancement of mass transfer using nanofluids has received increasing attention in recent years. A comprehensive literature review on gas-liquid mass transfer enhancement by nanofluids is here compiled. The aim of this review is to summarize and compare the development of gas-liquid mass transfer enhancement and the related mechanism. This review emphasize nanofluids preparation methods, nanofluids classification, important influencing factors (gas flow rate, liquid flow rate, gas inlet concentration, solid particles size, solid particles loading and temperature), enhancement mechanism (shuttle effect, hydrodynamic effect and inhibition of bubble coalescence) and further directions. This work also analyses experimental investigations by different authors on gas-liquid mass transfer utilizing nanofluids. Moreover, this review summarize literature on mass transfer in nanofluids stating the conflicting results and possible reasons. The outcomes of this review are expected to inspire new research for future developments and potential application of gas-liquid mass transfer in scientific research and industrial sectors.

Abstract:Gas-liquid mass transfer is widespread in chemical industrial processes like gas separation. Enhancing gas-liquid mass transfer can help achieve production process with high efficiency and low energy consumption. It is an effective method to enhance gas-liquid mass transfer by adding the third dispersed solid particles. A review and comparison of the experimental and theoretical research results on gas-liquid mass transfer in the presence of fine particles were presented and existing problems were analyzed. Based on the traditional gas-liquid mass transfer theories, three widely accepted mechanisms explaining gas-liquid mass transfer enhancement caused by fine particles were introduced. Several homogenous and heterogeneous models developed for micro-explanation of the enhancement effect were discussed briefly, with their application scope and accuracy compared. Finally, the study directions in the field of gas-liquid mass transfer with nanoparticles were proposed based on the overview.

Abstract:Three-phase packed distillation has been so far relatively poorly understood. Hence, a Substantial mass transfer model describing the (vapor-liquid-liquid) three-phase flow in packed column is proposed to explore the essence of three-phase distillation. The model enables, for the first time, rigorous computation of all the interphase transfer parameters oil the basis of a thorough consideration of the unique How behaviors (Such as film breakup, rivulet-flow, Surface variation, etc.) Caused by the second liquid. The derived theoretical mass transfer model has been incorporated into the three-phase nonequilibrium Simulation. Moreover, comprehensive experimental investigations have been carried Out using two laboratory-scale columns, and four different packings (Montz-Pak B1-350, Rombopak 9M, Raschig Super-Ring 0.3, and Sulzer Optiflow C.36) were considered. The derived experimental database, covering a wide range of load conditions, is used for flow pattern identification and model validation. For the Studied n-butanol/water/n-propanol system, it is revealed that the flow pattern of file second liquid (aqueous phase) could play a critical role in the system performance. When the second liquid flows below the first liquid film, it will enlarge the interfacial area and enhance the vapor-liquid mass transfer; when the second liquid flows above the first liquid film, it will reduce the interfacial area and degrade the mass transfer. This fundamental flow behavior may essentially result in the discrepancy existing in the highly variable separation efficiencies in three-phase packed columns.

Abstract:The heat and mass transfer characteristics during the collision process of hydrocarbon droplets and polyethylene particles in a liquid-containing gas-solid polyethylene fluidized bed reactor significantly affect the product quality. In this work, the mass transfer process of single-component hydrocarbon and bi-component hydrocarbon liquid films on the polyethylene particle surface were quantitatively characterized by a newly developed experimental approach, based on a novel synthesized hydrocarbon liquid soluble fluorescent probe for sensitive tracing of hydrocarbon liquid diffusion. It was found that the boiling point and surface tension of the liquid as well as the surface temperature of the particle are the key factors affecting the mass transfer properties of the liquid film. Marangoni convection was observed and characterized on the particle surface. The critical time for the onset of Marangoni flow is between 4 and 8 s.

Abstract:Enhancing the mass transfer performance just by modifying the channel structure without external energy input is one of the most important topics for microchemical technology development. This work reports the high‐performance gas–liquid mass transfer in a novel step T‐junction microchannel. The liquid‐side mass transfer coefficient in the step T‐junction has been significantly improved by one order of magnitude when compared with the conventional T‐junction, which is higher up to 60 × 10−4 m/s. To our knowledge, it might be the highest value obtained in the microchannel without external energy input. The parameters of bubble generation frequency and gas–liquid interface movement velocity in different microdevices are explored to reveal the mechanism behind the ultra‐high mass transfer coefficient in the step T‐junction. Finally, two models considering the gas absorption are developed for the bubble generation frequency and volume, and two models are proposed for the gas–liquid mass transfer coefficient.

Abstract:Bubble mass transfer is a common phenomenon in industrial applications. In this paper, bubble dynamics in both still and turbulent flow were introduced first, followed by the mass transfer properties of a single bubble and bubble swarms. Then, bubble mass transfer models for different scenarios were summarized, including three classical models, extended models, eddy diffusion and whirlpool theoretical models, and semi- or empirical correlations. Finally, existing methods for mass transfer intensification in industries were reviewed. Despite extensive researches, the mechanism for bubble mass transfer has not been fully understood. Models are commonly limited to some specific conditions and the accuracy is limited, especially for bubble swarms and bubble mass transfer in turbulent and non-Newtonian fluids. Also, the mass transfer intensification methods have their own limitations. Additional exploration of knowledge on bubble mass transfer models and further improvement in mass transfer intensification technologies are still required in the future.

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents a comprehensive review of the remarkable achievements by Chinese scientists and engineers who have contributed to the multiscale process design, with emphasis on the transport mechanisms in stirred reactors, extractors, and rectification columns. After a brief review of the classical theory of transport phenomena, this paper summarizes the domestic developments regarding the relevant experiments and numerical techniques for the interphase mass transfer on the drop/bubble scale and the micromixing in the single-phase or multiphase stirred tanks in China. To improve the design and scale-up of liquid-liquid extraction columns, new measurement techniques with the combination of both particle image velocimetry and computational fluid dynamics have been developed and advanced modeling methods have been used to determine the axial mixing and mass transfer performance in extraction columns. Detailed investigations on the mass transfer process in distillation columns are also summarized. The numerical and experimental approaches modeling transport phenomena at the vicinity of the vapor-liquid interface, the point efficiency for trays/packings regarding the mixing behavior of fluids, and the computational mass transfer approach for the simulation of distillation columns are thoroughly analyzed. Recent industrial applications of mathematical models, numerical simulation, and experimental methods for the design and analysis of multiphase stirred reactors/crystallizers, extractors, and distillation columns are seen to garnish economic benefits. The current problems and future prospects are pinpointed at last.

Abstract:Mass transfer performance of gas–liquid two-phase flow at microscale is the basis of application of microreactor in gas–liquid reaction systems. At present, few researches on the mass transfer property of annular flow have been reported. Therefore, the mass transfer mechanism and relationship of gas–liquid annular flow in a microfluidic cross-junction device are studied in the present study. We find that the main factors, i.e. , flow pattern, liquid film thickness, liquid hydraulic retention time, phase interface fluctuation, and gas flow vorticity, which influence the flow mass transfer property, are directly affected both by gas and liquid flow velocities. But the influences of gas and liquid velocities on different mass transfer influencing factors are different. Thereout, the fitting relationships between gas and liquid flow velocities and mass transfer influencing factors are established. By comparing the results from calculations using fitting equations and simulations, it shows that the fitting equations have relatively high degrees of accuracy. Finally, the Pareto front, namely the Pareto optimal solution set, of gas and liquid velocity conditions for the best flow mass transfer property is obtained using the method of multi-objective particle swarm optimization. It is proved that the mass transfer property of the gas–liquid two-phase flow can be obviously enhanced under the guidance of the obtained Pareto optimal solution set through experimental verification. Abstract:In this paper, a modeling study on the mechanism of process intensification of liquid–liquid extraction with high phase ratio by forming G/W/O (gas in water phase in organic phase) microdispersion system is carried out. Extraction of H2O2 from an organic phase to an aqueous phase was selected as the model system. The influence of the addition of gas phase as well as dispersion size on mass transfer performance is investigated. The results show that both the increase in the addition of gas phase and decrease in dispersion size lead to significant enhancement in mass transfer performance, especially for the overall mass transfer coefficient. As gas-to-water flow rate ratio increases from 25 to 600, the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient increases by nearly two orders of magnitude. The calculation result shows good coincidence with experimental values. The modeling investigation possibly leads to a further understanding of the mechanism of process intensification of liquid–liquid extraction process by introducing microbubbles and forming G/W/O microdispersion system and also helps the development of new extraction processes as well as design of microdispersion devices with compactness and high efficiency.

Abstract:The motion of particles in multiphase reaction systems and their physicochemical properties at the interfaces play a decisive role in molecular diffusion,energy transfer and reaction transformation,which in turn directly determines the energy and material consumption as well as intrinsic safety of the chemical reaction process.This paper briefly introduces some exploratory work carried out by our team and colleagues in the past 20 years in the area of nano-micron fluids and their interfacial properties and reaction intensification in multiphase reaction systems,including their intensification effects of mass transfer and reaction;the structure,motion,mass transfer and reaction properties of individual nano-micron bubble;dynamic,nonlinear,non-uniform and nonequilibrium characteristics;the testing and characterization of the fluids,the hydroxyl radical detection in nano-micron aqueous solution and their novel chemical effects;as well as applications of the fluids for reaction intensification.It is shown that nano-micron fluids with the physicochemical properties clearly different from those of macroscopic fluids are the emerging but very challenging field requiring intensive research and development.On the theoretical side,it is necessary to improve and extend theories of the classical physical chemistry and equilibrium thermodynamics with the consideration of the dynamic,nonequilibrium and scale effects.On the experimental side,it is crucial to design and establish instrumentation systems suitable for the in-situ detection and characterization of nano-micron fluids fluids.In terms of applications,it is important to invent nano-micron interfacial generators for preparing and regulating nano-micron fluids on a large scale(e.g.,103～106 m3 h-1)at large gas-liquid ratio(e.g.,5:1～100:1),and to develop nano-micron fluid reactor platforms and manipulation systems for a wide range of application scenarios.

Abstract:Gas-liquid-liquid three-phase flow in cross microchannels has been widely used in flow chemistry and process intensification. At present, the flow and mass transfer characteristics in this microchannel are not well understood. In this work, the hydrodynamics and liquid-liquid mass transfer characteristics of gas-liquid-liquid three-phase flow were systematically investigated. For the gas-liquid-liquid hydrodynamics, the bubble/droplet size prediction model based on the multiphase cooperative behavior was proposed, which could be used in predicting droplet/bubble size in flow systems. For the gas-liquid-liquid mass transfer process, the semi-empirical prediction formula of the mass transfer coefficient was obtained by considering the vortex strength, the interfacial area and the effective mass transfer area. This work could be the comprehensive study of gas-liquid-liquid three-phase flow and liquid-liquid mass transfer under gas enhancement in the cross microchannel.

Abstract:To enhance the mass transfer between liquid and gas,A new type of reactor-Rotor Drum Reactor has been designed.Under different operation conditions,the gas holdup and residence time distribution were measured by volume method and pulse method,the gas-liquid mass transfer characteristics of the new reactor were studied via deoxidization of water with air.Results showed that the liquid was close to plug flow reactor,gas holdup increased with the increase of N and QG,the volume mass-transfer coefficient,KLa,increased with the increase of N and QG,but changed slightly with the increase of QL.

Abstract:Evaporation, boiling, and condensation are fundamental liquid-vapor phase-change heat transfer processes and have been utilized in many conventional and emerging energy systems. Recent advances in the manipulation of interface wetting and heterogeneous nucleation using micro/nano-structured surfaces have enabled exciting two-phase flow dynamics and heat transfer enhancement. However, independently manipulating droplets, bubbles, or liquid films through surface modification has encountered bottlenecks. In this Perspective, we discuss an emerging strategy where droplets/bubbles are coupled with a liquid film to control fluid dynamics for minimizing the thermal resistance between the liquid-vapor interface and solid substrate, thus significantly enhancing the heat transfer performance beyond the state of the art.

Abstract:Micro‐packed bed reactors, due to their high mass and heat transfer efficiency, and inherent safety, have significant advantages in processes such as hydrogenation reactions, debenzylation reactions, and catalyst screening. Despite extensive studies on gas–liquid two‐phase flow in micro‐packed beds, research on gas–liquid–liquid three‐phase flow remains limited. This study investigates the mass transfer and pressure drop behaviors of gas–liquid–liquid three‐phase flow in micro‐packed beds. Experimental results reveal that gas–liquid mass transfer is influenced by dispersion and turbulence enhancements, as well as the secondary liquid phase. A mathematical model for mass transfer shows strong agreement with experimental data. Additionally, a pressure drop model, considering inertial, viscous, and interfacial tension forces, accurately predicts experimental results. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing micro‐packed bed operations.

Abstract:Gas-liquid systems with low reaction rates such as hydrogenation and oxidation are widely present in modern industrial processes.These reactions are generally controlled by mass transfer.Therefore, mass transfer intensification in multiphase reaction systems has been one research hotspot in chemical engineering.Except studies on reactors intensified by external field or micro-channel (micro-fluidics), most studies were focused on traditional reactors with interface scale of millimeter to centimeter by means of stirring and mixing, bubble size distribution, flow pattern, and structure-effect relationship.It has rarely been studied how to build a microinterface system and to evaluate its effects in reactors with a diameter of several meters.In this paper, the microinterface reaction intensification in heterogeneous systems was discussed.The micro-interface definition, microinterface reaction intensification, structure-effect regulation, structure and formation principle of microinterface reactors, techniques of microparticle measurement and interface characterization were briefly described.The challenges and problems in microinterface reaction intensification was also presented for discussion.
Enhancement of Mass Transfer Performance of Liquid–liquid System by Droplet Flow in Microchannels

Abstract:Two multiphase flow microfluidic devices based on the use of droplet flow to enhance the mass transfer performance have been specially developed. Mass transfer performance data has been obtained by monitoring the extraction of succinic acid from n-butanol to aqueous drops containing NaOH. Monodisperse aqueous droplets with average diameters of 130–550μm were generated, and the mass transfer time was 0.4–4.0s accordingly. The mass transfer rate was 10–1000 times higher comparing to the traditional liquid–liquid systems. Vortex flow patterns within the droplet were generated during droplet forming stage that enhanced mass transfer rate greatly. The mass transfer during droplet formation stage contributed at least 30% of the total mass transfer quantities from the theoretical analyzing. And the mass transfer coefficients were 10–100 times higher than that of droplet moving stage. These results were very different to the mass transfer in conventional extraction processes. The mass transfer mechanism during droplet forming stage in microscale should be investigated fundamentally in the further work. The mass transfer results from this study indicate that droplet flow within a microscale environment offers a viable alternative for two-phase reaction or separation systems.

Abstract:A systematical study on the mass transfer performance of segmented gas–liquid flows was conducted in T-junction microdispersion devices and the perpendicular shearing method was applied to generate the gas–liquid microflow. An in situ measuring method was developed, with which the overall mass transfer coefficient in the flowing stage could be determined by measuring the change of gas slug volume versus flowing distance. Meanwhile, the overall mass transfer coefficient in both straight and curve shaped microchannels were determined and compared. The influences of both the gas and liquid flow rates, the gas concentration and the curve radii of main channel on the overall mass transfer coefficient were investigated. The overall mass transfer coefficient in both straight and curve shaped microchannels respectively ranged in 1–3×10−4m/s and 2–7×10−4m/s, indicating the mass transfer in segmented gas–liquid flows can be enhanced by changing the main channel shape. Semi-empirical equations have been developed to correlate overall mass transfer coefficient in straight and curve shaped microchannels and calculated results show that the equations can predict the experimental values well.

Abstract:In this study, a one-step microfluidic capillary device for the enhancement of mass transfer process with high phase ratio by hollow droplet was developed. Herein, a fluorescent material rhodamine B was used as the transportation substance, which gets transferred from an aqueous phase to an oil phase. Qualitative demonstrations of the extraction process are presented. During the droplet formation stage, the fluorescent brightness of the droplets becomes stronger for a droplet with and without a bubble in it. During the droplet moving stage, for both flow conditions, the fluorescence intensity increases along the outlet channel. At the latter half of the outlet channel, the addition of gas greatly enhances the mass transfer process. The mean overall volumetric mass transfer coefficients k(L)a increases with increasing gas flow rate; this is mostly because of the sharply increased specific area. Moreover, the kLa value of gas-liquid-liquid hollow droplet flow increases around 10-60 times compared to that of a liquid-liquid droplet flow system. The length of extraction equipment needed to reach 95% extraction efficiency is reduced to around 10-1000 times when gas microbubbles are introduced. Based on the experimental data, a theoretical model has been built up for the potential prediction of the enhancement of the extraction by adding gas microbubbles. The effective diffusion coefficient is introduced to combine the convective mass transfer factor into this model. The modelling results fit well with the experimental data.
