Abstract:A samarocene complex, (C5Me5)(2)SmMe(thf), was adsorbed on a series of mesoporous silicates of various pore sizes. Pre-treatment of the latter with AIMe(3) before adding the complex was effective in deactivating the surface silanol functionalities. The silicates having relatively larger pore size tended to adsorb a larger amount of the complex. The polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) by the complex adsorbed on the silicates with large pore sizes (> 29 Angstrom) quantitatively afforded highly syndiotactic poly(MMA)s with higher molecular weights compared with those obtained by the corresponding homogeneous system. Emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate in concentration of emulsifiers below their CMCs—polymerization rate, particle size, and particle-size distribution

Abstract:The emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in concentrations of emulsifiers below their critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) initiated by K2S2O8 (KPS) was studied. It was observed that the initiator concentration has little effect on both polymerization rate and particle size. However, the polymerization rate is faster and particle size is smaller obviously when decreasing the ratio of the water/monomer or increasing the temperature of polymerization or the amount of the emulsifier. In the range of a 200-400 rpm stirring speed, the polymerization rate is almost unchanged although the particle size becomes larger with increase in the stirring speed. The monodisperse particle (size about 100-200 nm) can be obtained using this process. The mechanism of emulsion polymerization of MMA in the emulsifier concentration below its CMC is discussed. Abstract:Organic/inorganic support made by poly (styrene-co-acrylic acid) P (S-co-AA) and SiO(2) was prepared for immobilizing (n-BuCp)(2)ZrCl(2)/M-1 hybrid catalyst. P(S-co-AA) was first coated on industrialized M-1 catalyst (SiO(2)/MgCl(2)-TiCl(3)). The hybrid catalyst was achieved after immobilizing (n-BuCp)(2)ZrCl(2) on the P(S-co-AA) layer. The barrier property of P(S-co-AA) layer to cocatalyst MMAO was observed by ethylene polymerization. The appearance of the lag phase in the kinetic curve during the first stage polymerization implied that the exterior catalyst ((n-BuCp)(2)ZrCl(2)) could be activated prior to the interior catalyst (M-1). In addition, the morphology, short chain branch degree, molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and crystalline property of polymers obtained at different polymerization times were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The results showed that the polymer properties had little variance in the initial polymerization stage. However, two melting peaks gradually generated when the polymerization was conducted for 40 min. Moreover, the molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and short chain branch degree showed obvious changes after 40 min of polymerization time. All of those obvious changes of the polymer properties indicated that M-1 catalyst was gradually activated by MMAO after the polymerization were conducted for 40 min. The activated M-1 catalyst led to a decrease in the molecular weight.

Abstract:Methyl methacrylate (MMA) was polymerized with Cp(2)ZrCl(2)/methylaluminoxane or Cp(2)M(CH3)(2) (M: Zr, Hf; Cp = cyclopentadienyl) combined with B(C6F5)(3) (1) or Ph(3)CB(C6F5)(4) (2), (Ph = phenyl), in the presence of a Lewis acid like Zn(C2H5)(2). A quasi-living polymerization was promoted by Cp(2)Zr(CH3)(2)/2/Zn(C2H5)(2) with slow initiation, which gave syndiotactic-rich poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with high molecular weight. The polymer yield increases with polymerization time, which indicates that the propagation rate is zero order in concentration of monomer. The polymer yield increases also with concentration of Cp(2)Zr(CH3)(2)/2, which indicates the zirconocene to be the real catalyst. The polymer yield and the initiation efficiency (N/[Zr]) increase with the concentration of Zn(C2H5)(2), which indicates Zn(C2H5)(2) to be involved in the initiation. It is also shown that the propagation reaction is independent of the concentration of Zn(C2H5)(2).
In-Situ Heterogenous Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylateonto Nanometer Calcium Carbonate Particles

Abstract:4,4'-azobis (4-cyanopentanoic acid) (ACPA) initiator chelated onto the surface of nanometer calcium carbonate was used to initiate the polymerization of methyl methacrylate in water. The kinetics of polymerization and grafting of PMMA on the surface of nano-CaCO 3 were investigated. The results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the decomposition temperature of ACPA decreased when it was chelated onto the particles. The polymerization rate of methyl methacrylate (MMA) decreased when CaCO 3 particles was added, while it increased as the initiator concentration and polymerization temperature increased. The grafting efficiency of PMMA decreased as the conversion increased. The agglomerates of nanometer calcium carbonate particles were separated into small ones during polymerizing process and the size of aggregates covered with poly(methyl methacrylate) decreased as polymerization proceeded.

Abstract:The late transition metal catalyst 2,6-bis[1-(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)ethyllpyridine iron(II) chloride was supported on silica. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electronic micrograph and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were utilized to examine the process of supporting catalyst on silica and investigate the possible mechanism of support. Furthermore, ethylene polymerizations with the supported catalysts were carried out in various conditions such as different reaction temperatures and Al/Fe molar ratios. The results showed that MAO first reacted with the hydroxyl of silica forming Si-O-Al bonds and then the catalyst was bridged through MAO on the surface of silica. Compared with homogeneous catalysts, the supported catalysts show some decrease in catalyst activity. However, they can show good activity at a lower Al/Fe molar ratio with MAO as co-catalyst and give rise to higher molecular weight and melting temperature of the polymer. Better morphology of polyethylene was obtained by a supported catalyst than by its corresponding homogeneous catalyst. (C), 2002 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Anchoring of 4, 4'-azobis (4-cyanopentanoic acid) (ACPA) onto nanometer silica and radical graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate ( MMA) from the modified silica through emulsion polymerization were investigated. The anchoring of ACPA onto silica was achieved by treating of silica with glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane and reacting with ACPA. The anchoring of ACPA was confirmed by DSC and element analysis. Poly (methyl methacrylate) ( PMMA) was effectively grafted onto nanometer silica through the initiation of anchored ACPA during emulsion polymerization. The grafting percentage and efficiency of PMMA were 23.2% and 36.1% determined by TGA. Furthermore, the aggregation degree of the original nanometer silica was decreased by in-situ polymerization, and the stability of PMMA/nano-silica composite latex was good.

Abstract:Polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was conducted with a series of dimethylsilylene-bridged zirconocene complexes (rac-Me2ilnd2ZrMe2, 1; Me2SiCpIndZrMe2, 2; Me2SiCpFluZrMe2, 3: Cp, cyclopentadienyl; Ind, indenyl; Flu, fluorenyl) to investigate the effects of the cyclopentadienyl ligand. Thezirconocene complexes were activated by [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] or [PhMe2NH][B(C6F5)4]in the presence of diethylzinc. It was found that 1 and 2 gave polymers but 3 did not at 0°C. The dependence of polymer yieldand molecular weight on polymerization time indicated that some chain transfer reaction occurred in both systems. 13C NMR analysis revealed that C1symmetric 2 as well as C 2-symmetric 1 gave isotactic rich polymer (mmmm = 84–87%) by enantiomorphic-site controlled mechanism. Polymerization of allyl methacrylate (ALMA) was also conducted with Cp2ZrMe2 and 1. These catalysts selectively polymerized the methacryl group to give syndiotactic-rich and isotactic polymers, respectively with pendant allyl group.

Abstract:Polymerization of methyl methacrylate in toluene, at various temperatures with silica gel grade 955 supported [C5Me5](2)SmMe (THF) was studied. This type of polymerization exhibits several characteristics. The PMMA obtained has higher number average molecular weight and wider molecular weight distribution compared with those obtained by solution polymerization with homogeneous catalyst system, although the polymerization activity is lower.

Abstract:A silica gel supported CuBr-hexamethyltriethylenetetramine (HMTETA) (SG-CuBr/HMTETA) catalyst system was developed for the synthesis of poly-(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (polyDMAEMA) macromonomers with terminal vinyl or allyl group by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Catalyzed by SG-CuBr/HMTETA and with vinyloxyethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate (VBIB) or allyl 2-bromoisobutyrate (ABIB) as initiator, the MMA polymerization showed first order kinetics up to a 60% monomer conversion. The polymerization rate slowed down at higher conversions due to a reduction in radical concentration. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) results showed that the decrease in radical concentration was caused by the reaction of radicals with the initiator's vinyl or allyl group moieties. In contrast, the DMAEMA polymerization was first order kinetics throughout the polymerization. The molecular weights of the resulting PMMA and polyDMAEMA increased linearly with conversion with low polydispersities. After the first run polymerization, the catalysts were recycled for second and third runs. The recycled catalysts still mediated a living polymerization of MMA or DMAEMA, producing polymers with controlled molecular weight and narrow polydispersity, but their catalytic activities decreased significantly. The reactivity reduction of the recycled catalyst was due to radical side reactions that yielded an extra amount of CuBr2 as well as the catalyst loss during recycling.

Abstract:This paper describes a successful dispersion catalytic chain transfer polymerization (CCTP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of a transition-metal catalyst (tetraphenylcobalt-oxime boron fluoride, COPhBF (I)) in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) using poly(dimethylsiloxane) monomethacrylate (PDMS-ma) macromonomer as a stabilizer. The final product is a dry, fine powder with controlled molecular weight and a narrow molecular weight distribution. It was found that the dispersion polymerization could reduce the activity of CCT catalyst, which can lead to facile and controlled preparation of high molecular weight vinyl-terminated macromonomers.

Abstract:Novel porous poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) silica nanocomposites have been produced by utilization of polymerization-induced phase separation in a simple one-pot approach. A facile free radical polymerization of MMA in the presence of surface methacrylate-functionalized silica nanoparticles was carried out in ethanol-based solvents, successfully producing novel, morphologically designable porous nanocomposite monoliths. Differing from standard free radical polymerization in solution, a mixture of good and poor solvents (ethanol/<i>N</i>,<i>N</i>-dimethylformamide ratio) for the resulting polymer was used to trigger spinodal phase separation. The influence of monomer concentration, as well as solvent composition, on the morphology of the resulting porous polymers has been investigated. Porous monolith structures composed of connected particles and co-continuous morphologies were observed under a scanning electron microscope depending on the polymerization conditions. The resulting polymers were insoluble and showed swelling characteristics in some organic solvents that are capable of dissolving regular PMMA, indicating covalent bonds between the functionalized silica nanoparticles and the polymer chains. The presence of silica particles in the final polymer was proven via an ATR-IR analysis. The glass transition temperature of the present PMMA-silica nanocomposite was higher than that of the conventional PMMA. The porous polymer immersed in a mixed organic solvent showed coloration induced by the Christiansen effect.

Bulk and Solution Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate by Novel Dinuclear Titallocene Catalyst

Abstract:A new dinuclear titanocene complex [(CH3C5H4) TiCl2]2 [C5H4CH2CH2 OCH2CH2C5H4] (A) was synthesized and characterized by elementary analysis and l H-NMR spectrometry. In combination with the cocatalyst of Al(Et)3, methylaluminoxane (MAO) and Al(i-Bu)3, A was active to initiate methyl methacrylate (MMA) bulk and solution polymerization. The influences of cocatalyst, reaction time and temperature on polymerization were studied in detail. The result showed that Al(i-Bu)3 was the best cocatalyst. In combination with cocatalyst of Al(i-Bu)3, under the polymerization conditions of molar ratio of MMA to A 1500, molar ratio of Al(i-Bu)3 to A 20, 60°C, reaction time 20 h, the conversion of MMA and the viscosity average molecular weight of PMMA of bulk polymerization were 98.6% and 7.87 × 105 repectively; under the polymerization conditions of molar ratio of MMA to A 1500, molar ratio of Al(i-Bu)3 to A 20, 80°C, reaction time 15 h, the conversion of MMA and the viscosity average molecular weight of PMMA of solution polymerization were 77.3% and 3.24 × 105 respectively. The molecular weight distribution (MWD) of PMMA was 5.0-7.0.

Abstract:A silica gel support system for the copper bromide-hexamethyltriethylenetetramine (HMTETA) complex was successfully developed for the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in toluene. The supported complex mediated a living polymerization of MMA, yielding polymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. The MMA concentration had significant influence on the polymerization behavior. At 33% MMA concentration, the polymerization catalyzed by CuBr-HMTETA/silica gel followed typical first-order kinetics with respect to the monomer. But at 50% MMA, the polymerization significantly deviated from the first-order kinetics after the MMA conversion reached 30%. The supported catalysts were recycled for second and third uses. The recycled catalysts remained 80% active in the second use and 50% in the third use relative to their initial activity. The recycled catalysts had even better controllability over the polymerization. The molecular weights of PMMA produced agreed with the predicted values, and the polydispersities were less than 1.2.

Abstract:Methyl methacrylate (MMA) emulsion polymerization in the presence of nanometer calcium carbonate (nano-CaCO3) surface modified with γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) was carried out to prepare poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/nano-CaCO3 composite. The reaction between nano-CaCO3 and MPTMS, and the grafting of PMMA onto nano-CaCO3 were confirmed by infrared spectrum. The grafting ratio and grafting efficiency of PMMA on nano-CaCO3 modified with MPTMS were much higher than that on nano-CaCO3 modified with stearic acid. The grafting ratio of PMMA increased as the weight ratio between MMA and nano-CaCO3 increased, while the grafting efficiency of PMMA decreased. Transmission electron micrograph showed that nano-CaCO3 covered with PMMA was formed by in-situ emulsion polymerization.
Effects of Mesoporous Silica Particles on the Emulsion Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate

Abstract:Rod‐like and spherical mesoporous SBA‐15 silica particles were synthesized as pure silicas and surface modified by organosilane coupling agents firstly, and then the effects of these mesoporous materials on the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), the stabilities of batch and semi‐continuous MMA emulsion polymerizations, and the molecular weights and molecular weight distributions of the polymer products were studied. The incorporation of both unmodified and silane‐modified forms of the mesoporous silica particles in the polymerization reaction increased the CMC of SDS. The presence of the unmodified mesoporous silica in the polymerization process led to instability in the batch emulsion polymerization process, as indicated by the formation of increased amounts of coagulum, and a decrease in the molecular weight of the polymer product. However, in comparison to the polymer formed in the absence of particle additives the molecular weight of the PMMA polymer increased with the amount of emulsifier and the addition of silane‐modified SBA‐15 particles, suggesting the growth of the polymer chains is facilitated at least in part by reaction in the pores of the particles. The improvement in molecular weight indicates that semi‐continuous MMA emulsion polymerization is best suited for the preparation of PMMA–mesoporous silica composites. POLYM. ENG. Synthesis of New Silicon-linked Lanthanocene Complexes and Their High Catalytic Activity for Methyl Methacrylate Polymerization with Nanometric Sodium Hydride as Co-catalyst

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of four new silicon-linked lanthanocene complexes with pendant phenyl groups on cyclopentadiene were reported. Based on the data of elemental analyses, MS and IR, the complexes were presumed to be unsolvated and dimeric complexes [Me2Si(C5H3CMe2C6H5)(2)LnCl](2) [Ln=Er (1), Gd (2), Sm (3), Dy (4)]. In conjunction with AlEt3 or sodium hydride as the co-catalyst, these complexes could efficiently catalyze the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). When the nanometric sodium hydride was used as a co-catalyst, the complexes were highly effective for the polymerization of MMA. At low temperature and in short time, in [Me2Si(C5H3CMe2C6H5)(2)LnCl](2)/NaH (nanometric) system, the polymer was obtained in more than 80% yield and the molecular weight was greater than 10(5). The activity reached that of organolanthanide hydride as a single-component catalyst. In [Me2Si(C5H3CMe2C6H5)(2)ErCl](2)/NaH (nanometric) system, the effects of the molar ratio of MMA/catalyst and catalyst/co-catalyst, and the temperature on polymerization were studied.
Supported atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate mediated by CuBr-tetraethyldiethylenetriamine grafted onto silica gel

Abstract:Silica-gel particles grafted with tetraethyldiethylenetriamine were synthesized as support for CuBr for the heterogeneous atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). The immobilized CuBr mediated a living polymerization of MMA, demonstrated by an increase in molecular weight with conversion and low polydispersity. An excessive amount of catalyst (typically, CuBr/initiator = 1.5) was required to achieve a living process because of the limited mobility of the supported catalyst. The silica-gel concentration had a strong effect on the polymerization. The recycled catalyst still mediated a living process but showed a reduced catalytic activity due to the presence of Cu(II). After being regenerated by a reaction with Cu(0), the catalyst regained its activity. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:Polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was conducted with the catalyst systems of rac-Et(Ind)(2)Zr(CH3)(2)/Ph(3)CB(C6F5)(4), rac-Et(IndH(4))(2)Zr(CH3)(2)/Ph(3)CB(C6F5)(4), and rac-Me(2)Si(Ind)(2)Zr(CH3)(2)/Ph(3)CB(C6F5)(4). These catalysts only were found to be inactive. However, the addition of suitable Lewis acids like alkylzinc and alkylaluminum compounds gave highly isotactic PMMA. The isotactic pentad [mmmm] in PMMA as well as the propagation rate constant (k(p)) depended significantly upon the zirconocene compounds. Both the microstructure ([mmmm]) and propagation rate constant (k(p)) increased in the following order: Me(2)Si(Ind)(2) < Et(IndH(4))(2) < Et(Ind)(2). The microstructure of PMMA was also affected slightly by alkylzinc compounds: (CH2)(2)CH=CH2 < CH2CH3 > (CH2)(3)CH3. When the polymerization was initiated by the rac-Et(Ind)(2)Zr(CH3)(2)/Ph(3)CB(C6F5)(4)/Zn(C2H4CH=CH2)(2) catalyst system at 0 degrees C in toluene, the molecular weight of PMMA increased in proportion to the conversion of MMA. The increase of temperature from 0 to 80 degrees C caused a decrease in isotactic pentad content by approximately 10%. The isotactic polymerization of MMA was revealed to proceed by an enantiomorphic site-controlled mechanism.

Abstract:Nanosilica particles well dispersed in ethanol were modified by 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (MPS) and then re-dispersed into methyl methacrylate (MMA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix via a media replacement process and an in situ bulk polymerization process, respectively. The MPS modified status of silica particles and its effects on the dispersion of silica particles in different media and polymer matrix were systematically investigated by FTIR, TG, DLS and TEM. It was found MPS oligomer was the main form for MPS coupling on silica particles surface. Excessive MPS dosage not only resulted in the formation of MPS homo-polymeric particles in media phase, but also the MPS oligomer thick layer on silica surface, which would inevitably induce the small-scale aggregation of silica particles. There existed an appropriate MPS coupling amount for excellent silica dispersity, which is mainly related with the apparent coupling density of MPS molecules on silica particles surface. When the apparent coupling density is 1. 3 similar to 5. 6 mu mol . (m(2) . SiO2)(-1), the MPS coupling efficiency is acceptable and the modification of silica particles is sufficient. Only on this state, silica particles can be dispersed in the monomer and polymer matrix at the primary particles size level, even in the case of 20% silica content. The silica/monomer dispersion prepared via the above processes exhibited high silica dispersity, high silica content, high storage stability and high grafting controllability on silica surface. All of them imply that this kind of dispersion is avail to prepare silica/PMMA composite microspheres via in situ heterogeneous polymerization, and these microspheres would possess controllable morphology and controllable graft interface.
