Abstract:The selective growth of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNTs) is of great importance in many high-end applications represented by nanoelectronics. Here, we developed a general approach to grow horizontally aligned s-SWCNT arrays on stable temperature (ST)-cut quartz with bimetallic catalysts using carbon monoxide (CO) as both catalyst reductant and single component carbon feedstock under atmospheric pressure. The disproportionation of CO produces not only carbon species for SWCNT growth but also CO 2 , which could act as an in-situ etchant to remove both amorphous carbon and metallic tubes. The employment of bimetallic catalyst and quartz substrate facilitates the selective etching by narrowing the diameter distribution of as-grown SWCNT arrays. At the optimized conditions, we realized the selective growth of horizontally aligned s-SWCNT arrays with the content above 97% using CoCu catalysts, confirmed by Raman characterization and electrical measurements of the fabricated field effect transistor devices. This CO-based process in selective growth of s-SWCNTs has demonstrated its feasibility and universality by the broad growth window and applicability for other bimetallic catalysts, such as FeCu and CoMn. It possesses a practical potential in obtaining semiconducting channel materials for the scalable fabrication of CNT-based devices.

Abstract:Using ferrocene as the catalyst and xylene as the precursor, films of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that are well aligned can be synthesized on flat substrates by chemical vapour deposition. Here we report that, by controlling the growth speed of CNTs at specific catalyst/carbon ratios, vertically aligned pillars of densely packed nanotubes with uniform diameters (within 10-30 mum) and lengths of up to 0.3-0.4 mm can be fabricated on a large scale on planar SiO2 substrates, forming a continuous film. The growth mechanism of the pillars was also investigated by observing the growth of CNTs at different growth stages.

Abstract:A simple method for the synthesis of metal oxide thin films through gel solutions of inorganic metal salts using poly(ethylene glycol) was developed. The technique was then applied to fabricate nanoscale MgO-supported catalysts for the surface CVD growth of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs.) The results showed that the catalytic films greatly promoted the growth of SWNTs of high quality, density, and uniformity. The bundle sizes, growth density, and orientation of the resulting SWNTs could be controlled to some extent by choosing the type of catalyst and by suitable modification of the reaction parameters.

Abstract:How to control the orientations of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) on surface is the key point to controlling their geometries. In this work, we chose quartz (001), MgO (001) and layered mica with 3-, 4- and 6-fold symmetry, respectively as substrates to grow SWCNTs using gas-flow and lattice-directed modes. The produced SWCNTs were aligned along the symmetrical directions and displayed the homologous angles of 120°, 90° and 60° during growth on quartz (001), MgO (001) and mica surfaces, respectively. The obtained SWCNTs with controlled geometries would have wide applications in nanoelectronic devices in the future.

Abstract:High-density parallel arrays of ultralong carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared by utilizing catalyst nanoparticles anchored by silica nanospheres through chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Silica nanospheres and catalyst solution were sequentially spin-coated onto the substrates for the growth of ultralong CNTs, followed by annealing to remove the polymer residues. Catalyst nanoparticles can be anchored on the top of or around the silica nanospheres. Then, ultralong CNTs were synthesized with methane as the carbon source at 1010°C under ambient pressure. Our results show that the areal density of the ultralong CNTs produced by this nanosphere-assisted process was obviously improved compared with that by the typical process without nanospheres.

Abstract:A simple and effective method to control the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by introducing 0-dimensional silica particles has been proposed and demonstrated. After being processed with dip-coating and self-assembly of the specific silica nanoparticles, the substrate surface with nano-scale morphology was obtained, and which helped to control the diameters and density during the CNTs growth in a Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition system. This method improved both diameter distribution and wall number distribution of the CNTs. The CNT density has reached about 6.4×1011 cm-2. The relation between the nanoparticle size and the CNTs' physical properties has also been explored.

Abstract:Fe3O4 Nanoparticles produce stable self-assembly film with cationic diazoresin (DR) on silicon surface, after reduction of Fe3O4 the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were grown on the silicon substrate via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles capped with polyacrylic acid (PAA) can avoid the aggregation of the nanoparticles effectively as well as improving the efficiency of the self-assembly. As a result the thin films with evenly distributed Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the nanotubes uniformly distributed on Si substrate were obtained.
Tunable Self‐Assembly of Carbon Nanotubes on Silica Surface

Abstract:We report here self-assembly behaviors of carbon nanotubes on planar silica substrates, tunable with a catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach. In this CVD process, different from several approaches reported, the catalyst (from ferrocene) and carbon (from xylene) are introduced simultaneously via the vapor phase; thus the ratio of catalyst/carbon in the vapor phase can be adjusted, which tunes the assembly behavior and growth pathways of nanotubes. Depending on this ratio, carbon nanotubes organize themselves into growth units of crystal-like, spherulite-like and honeycomb networks, at the early growth stages. Prolonged deposition leads to the nanotubes films of different morphologies, developed from these units. Our study provides the first ever glimpse of early stages of nanotubes growth and possible pathways through which nanotubes assemble and grow into continuous films.

Abstract:The structure of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) severely depends on the properties of pre-prepared catalyst films. Aiming for the preparation of precisely controlled catalyst film, atomic layer deposition (ALD) was employed to deposit uniform Fe 2 O 3 film for the growth of CNT arrays on planar substrate surfaces as well as the curved ones. Iron acetylacetonate and ozone were introduced into the reactor alternately as precursors to realize the formation of catalyst films. By varying the deposition cycles, uniform and smooth Fe 2 O 3 catalyst films with different thicknesses were obtained on Si/SiO 2 substrate, which supported the growth of highly oriented few-walled CNT arrays. Utilizing the advantage of ALD process in coating non-planar surfaces, uniform catalyst films can also be successfully deposited onto quartz fibers. Aligned few-walled CNTs can be grafted on the quartz fibers, and they self-organized into a leaf-shaped structure due to the curved surface morphology. The growth of aligned CNTs on non-planar surfaces holds promise in constructing hierarchical CNT architectures in future.
Diameter controlled growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes from SiO2 nanoparticles

Abstract:A rational approach is reported for the growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with controlled diameters using SiO2 nanoparticles in a chemical vapor deposition system. The SiO2 nanoparticles with different sizes were prepared by thermal oxidation of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) with different number of layers which were assembled on Si substrates. It was found that the size of SiO2 nanoparticles increased with the number of assembled APTES layers. Using these SiO2 nanoparticles as nucleation centers, the diameter distribution of as-grown SWCNTs were correlated with the size of SiO2 particles. In addition, both the classical longitudinal optical or transverse optical bands of SiC in in situ Raman spectra during the whole growth process and the Si 2p peak of SiC in the X-ray photoelectron spectra were not observed, suggesting that the carbon sources did not react with the SiO2 nanoparticles during the growth. Comparing to vapor–liquid–solid mechanism for metallic catalysts, vapor–solid mechanism is proposed which results in a lower growth rate when using SiO2 nanoparticles as nucleation centers.

Abstract:Control of the morphology of carbon nanotube films on substrates (e.g., silica) is achieved by regulating the catalyst concentration in the vapor phase during nanotube growth by catalytic chemical vapor deposition. Nucleation and growth of domains leads to either two-dimensional faceted crystallites (see Figure for an early-stage array) or radially symmetric spherulites (see cover).

Abstract:It is believed that carbon nanotubes were not able to grow on silicon substrates by chemical vapor deposition from a mixture of ferrocene and xylene. This is because iron particles (formed by the decomposition of ferrocene) reacted quickly with silicon to form a discontinuous layer (> 100 nm ) of FeSi 2 and Fe 2 SiO 4 particles. We report, in this letter, that by controlling the growth kinetics, aligned carbon nanotubes could be grown on pristine silicon substrates. The reason is that appropriate growth conditions could slow down and suppress the reaction within the very surface region to form an almost continuous thin layer (< 10 nm ) of Fe 2 SiO 4 particles; thus preventing further reaction and leaving a number of iron particles still active to catalyze the growth of carbon nanotubes. The structure and field emission properties of the nanotubes were also investigated.

Abstract:We report highly substrate-site selective growth of carbon nanotubes by chemical vapor deposition from precursors of ferrocene and xylene mixtures. The technique allows us to grow well-aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes preferentially on the SiO2 regions of patterned SiO2/Si substrates prepared by conventional lithography. This eliminates the catalyst predeposition step in the fabrication process. This simple approach may also be applied to build large-scale networks of organized nanotubes on planar substrates.

Abstract:The preferential growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on silica spheres with various diameters was realized for the first time by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of methane. SWNTs tend to wrap the silica spheres to form a new superstructure of uniform SWNT nanoclaws when the diameters of the silica spheres are larger than 400 nm. The SWNTs obtained on silica spheres have highly graphitic tubular walls as characterized by Raman spectroscopy and HRTEM. This is a new method to obtain tunable uniform elastic deformation of SWNTs, which may act as the model for the study about the effect of delocalized bending on the properties of SWNTs. In addition, the combination of SWNTs with monodispersed silica spheres could conveniently integrate SWNTs into photonic crystals.

Abstract:We report the growth of pillar-like cylindrical structures consisting of densely packed and vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes by exposing Ni-coated oxidized-Si (001) substrates to a xylene–ferrocene mixture. The nanotube pillars have a diameter between 10 and 100 μm, and lengths of several tens of micrometres. Formation of circular microcracks in the film allows ferrocene and xylene molecules to reach the underlying SiO2 layer where pillars nucleate and grow out of the plane of the film surface. The nanotube pillars are attractive for applications such as energy storage, electrodes, and composite reinforcements.
Controlling the Diameter of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Improving the Dispersion of the Uniform Catalyst Nanoparticles on Substrate

Abstract:To have uniform nanoparticles individually dispersed on substrate before single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) growth at high temperature is the key for controlling the diameter of the SWNTs. In this letter, a facile approach to control the diameter and distribution of the SWNTs by improving the dispersion of the uniform Fe/Mo nanoparticles on silicon wafers with silica layer chemically modified by 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyldisilazane under different conditions is reported. It is found that the dispersion of the catalyst nanoparticles on Si wafer surface can be improved greatly from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, and the diameter and distribution of the SWNTs depend strongly on the dispersion of the catalyst on the substrate surface. Well dispersion of the catalyst results in relatively smaller diameter and narrower distribution of the SWNTs due to the decrease of aggregation and enhancement of dispersion of the catalyst nanoparticles before growth. It is also found that the diameter of the superlong aligned SWNTs is smaller with more narrow distribution than that of random nanotubes.

Abstract:Catalyst particles were obtained by spin-coating isopropyl alcohol solution of Fe(NO3)3 on surface of P-type silicon.These particles can catalyze the decomposition of CH4 and growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs).On surface of P-type silicon,the distribution of SWNTs is uniform and some of SWNTs are erect.The influences of concentration of catalyst,substrates,reaction temperatures were investigated.Increase in catalyst concentration or silicon dioxide replacing P-type silicon as substrate could lead to denser SWNTs,shorter SWNTs and decrease in erect SWNTs on surface.With higher reaction temperature,growth of SWNTs is with lower efficiency and with higher probability to be affixed on surface of substrate.By pick-up method,carbon nanotube Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM) tips were successfully fabricated by imaging the nanotubes-covered substrates in tapping mode of AFM.
