Abstract:The solid behavior in a turbulent fluidized bed was studied by combination of experimental measurements and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Solid fractions were measured by optical fiber probe under three different superficial gas velocities and three different static bed heights at different axial levels. The experimental results showed that the lateral distribution of solid fraction is core-annulus and the operating conditions can influence the shape of the axial bed void profiles. In the CFD simulations, an Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid model that incorporates the kinetic theory of granular flow was used to describe the gas–solid two-phase flow in a turbulent fluidized bed. A modified drag model was proposed using a scaling factor to reduce the universal drag laws, which accounts for the effect of particle clustering. The drag model can predict the coexisting regions, the bottom dense, bubbling region and the dilute, dispersed flow region observed in experiments. No significant difference was observed between results after application of laminar and turbulence model. The simulated axial bed void and radial solid fraction fit well with experimental data. The transient local solid fraction and the particle velocity were also investigated.

Abstract:In a gas-solid fluidized bed, volatile liquid injection results in complex flow behaviors in the spray zone. To characterize the liquid existence forms (droplets and liquid films) and fluidization properties in the volatile spray zone, a mesoscale-theory based volatile spray zone model is developed with the consideration of hydrodynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer. A new energy-based stability condition is established according to two competition and coordination relationships, consisting of the energy dissipation based on the liquid-solid interface change and suspension and transporting of particles. The modeling results agree well with the experimental bed temperature as well as void fraction data, and show that the variation of liquid existence forms is dependent on the ratio of different energy consumption rates under the stability condition. Moreover, the gas-solid drag coefficient in the volatile spray zone is modified. Simulation results also reasonably describe the bed pressure drop fluctuation and particle velocity distribution.
Evolution and Interaction Characteristics of Liquid Flow and Bubbles in a Jet Bubbling Column

Abstract:The jet bubbling column is a new type of gas-liquid two-phase reactor with excellent mixing ability. The evolution and interaction characteristics of liquid flow and bubbles in a jet bubbling column are numerically studied through a computational fluid dynamic-population balance model (CFD-PBM) coupling method. The axial velocity distribution of liquid velocity at different heights in the column is measured experimentally and compared with the simulation results to verify the accuracy of the CFD-PBM coupling model. The simulation results show that the flow field in the column varies periodically. The period under the jet bubbling condition is longer than that under the pure jet condition. The liquid has both transporting and breaking effects on bubbles. On the one hand, the liquid vortices that move periodically transport the bubbles to various regions of the column; on the other hand, the strong turbulence at the exit of the jet nozzle promotes the breakup of the bubbles. The main region for the bubble breakup is between the exit of the jet nozzle and 100 mm below it. We have proven that the CFD-PBM coupling model employed can be used to simulate the flow field of a jet bubbling column, which is of great significance for the industrial application and optimization of the jet bubbling column reactors.

Abstract:An attempt has been made to model the flow structure and to predict heat transfer coefficients in a gas–solid bubbling fluidized bed operated with a central jet using a two fluid model with closures from the kinetic theory of granular flow. Quantities such as the fluid-to-particle heat transfer coefficient are not easily obtained practically from experiments with a high degree of accuracy thereby making computational methods attractive. The CFD model has been verified using experimental bubble properties obtained from the literature. Axial and lateral normal Reynolds stresses, energy spectra and granular temperatures have been computed. The simulations show that the maximum local instantaneous fluid-to-particle heat transfer coefficient occurs in the wake of the bubble. Heat transfer coefficients at the center of the bed exhibit high oscillations compared to the near wall region. However time averaged values in the near wall region are larger compared to the bed center. The average heat transfer coefficient exhibits a maximum value with the variation of the jet velocity.

Abstract:The excess accumulation of charges in the fluidized bed has a severe impact on hydrodynamics. Due to lack of effective experimental methods, electrostatic effects on hydrodynamics have mostly been studied using numerical simulation. By injecting a trace of liquid antistatic agents into a fluidized bed, charges were controlled and electrostatic influences on particle motions were investigated. The average particle–wall impact angles are acquired by developing multiscale wavelet decomposition of acoustic emission signals. The impact angles are significantly influenced by both charge levels and gas velocities. If the electric force is reduced and/or fluid drag is increased, friction dominates the particle–wall interactions. Under a larger gas velocity where fluid drag dominates, charges elimination causes no significant variation in particle impact angles, but particle velocities increase as well as at lower gas velocities. In addition, existence of electrostatic charges influences the ranges of bubble growing zone and jet impacting zone. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 3628–3638, 2015

Abstract:Particle and bubble motion plays an important role in determining the hydrodynamic characteristics of a fluidized system. The dynamic parameters of a fluidized bed are reflection of the complex correlation between particle–particle and particle–bubble in a system. A two-dimensional Eulerian–Eulerian model integrating the kinetic theory of granular flow is used to simulate the bubble and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) particle dynamic behavior in a gas–solid fluidized bed. The simulated method is validated by pressure fluctuation experiment. The computed vertical turbulent energy spectrum of particles is applied to identify the particle motion intensity and the inhomogeneity of turbulent energy dissipation. The energy spectrum captures the Levy–Kolmogorov law in inertial range at high frequency. Furthermore, the flatness factors of wavelet decomposition coefficients of particle fluctuation velocity are for the first time introduced to analyze the intermittence caused by coherent structures in the flow field. The results show that the intermittence in dissipation range is much stronger than that in energy-containing and inertial range, and reinforces rapidly as the radial distance and the bed height increase. Moreover, the acoustic emission (AE) energy is found to be able to indicate the flow regimes. By combing granular temperature and AE energy, the relationship between the spatial distribution of granular temperature and the flow regimes is established. To get more detail of bubble motion behavior, the power spectrum of voidage fluctuation is analyzed. This work provides valuable insights into the dynamic characteristics and the flow field information of a gas–solid fluidized bed by CFD simulation.

Abstract:Bubble and particle motion behaviors are investigated experimentally in a gas solid fluidized bed with liquid spray on the side wall. The particles used in the experiment are classified as Geldart B particles. The results reveal that when the fluid drag force is less than the liquid bridge force between particles, liquid distribute all over the bed. Bubble size increases as the increase of inter-particle force, then decreases owing to the increase of particle weight with increasing liquid flow rate. When the fluid drag force is greater than the liquid bridge force, liquid mainly distribute in the upper part of the bed. And it is difficult for the wet particles to form agglomerates. Bubble size decreases with increasing liquid flow rate due to the increasing of minimum fluidization velocity. Besides, the acoustic emission (AE) measurements illustrate that the liquid adhesion and evaporation on particles could enhance the particles motion intensity. Consequently, the bubble and particle behaviors change due to the variation in fluidized gas velocity and liquid flow rate should be seriously considered when attempting to successfully design and operate the side wall liquid spray gas solid fluidized bed. Abstract:The particle fluidization characteristics and transition in a hot gas-solid fluidized bed with liquid injection were investigated on the basis of pressure drop of fluidized bed, the side wall temperature distribution and the weight fraction of agglomerates. It was found that the particle fluidization behavior was controlled by liquid bridge force under low induction heating power, whereas both solid bridge force and liquid bridge force take control of fluidization under higher induction heating power. With increasing liquid injection flowrate, the particle fluidization behavior experienced four types, named fast defluidization, gradual defluidization, agglomerating fluidization and stable fluidization, respectively. Further the transition behaviors between different fluidization types of particles were investigated, and four fluidization regions were distinguished. A dimensionless number ζ was proposed based on the theoretical analysis of interparticle forces and bubble expansion force, thereby establishing the connection between lab-scale experiments and industrial fluidized beds, and providing guidelines for their safe operation.

Abstract:The flow and dispersion behaviors of the fine particle injection in a gas-solid fluidized bed were studied numerically based on the two-dimensional multi-fluid model. The injection path and flow pattern of the flotsam solids were investigated. A distinct pair of counter-rotating vortices of flotsam particles appeared in the middle and upper parts of the fluidized bed. Higher injection rate was preferred for faster flotsam dispersion. The effects of flotsam injection on bed hydrodynamics were investigated with regard to the velocity distribution and volume fraction of bulk materials and the bubble size. Consequently, the mixing properties of the flotsam particles and bulk solids were quantified by the fluid-free flotsam fraction profile and the standard deviation. The fluidized bed was mixed acceptably with modest local segregation for all the conditions simulated. Lower injection velocity made contributions to better mixing especially for the duration of injection.

Abstract:The gas discharge patterns, a jet and a spout, generated by a vertical nozzle in an 8-m-high, 0.5-m-diameter jetting fluidized bed were investigated using frame-by-frame analysis and Sth VCD software analysis. The static bed height was varied from 0.38 to 0.66 m, and the nozzle jet velocity was varied from 16.1 to 64.26 m/s. A correlation was developed using experimental data to predict the transition of the flow pattern from a jet to a spout. The study shows that the major frequency in the power spectrum density function agrees with the jet collapse frequency measured by frame-by-frame analysis and Sth VCD software analysis. The major frequency in the power spectrum density function increases with increasing jet gas velocity. In addition, the jet velocity at the critical point in the curve of the major frequency versus the jet gas velocity corresponds to the gas velocity for the transition from a jet to a spout.

Abstract:An experimental study was conducted in a 500 mm ID, 8,000 mm high jetting fluidized bed with double vertical nozzles using frame-by-frame analysis of experimental videos. Three different flow patterns (separated jets, flow transition and jet coalescence), with the two jets always coalesce within the penetration depth, were first observed in the jetting fluidized bed. Radial profiles in the fluidized bed were measured with a PC-4 optical fiber probe. Effects of jet gas velocity and nozzle distance on the radial and axial voidage distribution were studied. The bed hydrodynamic behavior was characterized using a deterministic chaotic theory to analyze effects of jet gas velocity static bed height, and nozzle distance on the correlation dimension, which inn-eased with increasing jet gas velocity and static bed height.

Abstract:In a  0.5?m×8?m semicircular jetting fluidized bed with double nozzles using millet as fluidized material, studies of various flow regimes, i.e.,separate jet regime, transition flow regime and jet coalescence regime were carried out.The equations of transition of flow regimes were proposed.Experimental results indicated that penetration depth increased with increasing jet gas velocity,while penetration depth decreased with decreasing nozzle pitch.A relationship of penetration depth and nozzle distance in a large jetting fluidized bed with double nozzles was obtained.With smaller nozzle distance, jet coalescence always occurred and jet coalescence height replaced the penetration depth.Thus,a correlation of jet coalescence height was also presented.Meanwhile, deterministic chaos theory was used to investigate the flow hydrodynamic characteristics in the bed.When p/d 0 is equal to 5.48,the curve of correlation dimension vs .jetting gas velocity showed a maximum increase rate corresponding with complex flow structure.Correlation dimension increased with static bed height.

Abstract:Voidage distribution along radial and axial directions in a cold flow semicircular fluidized bed 500 mm in diameter and 8000 mm in height was measured with a PC-4 optic fiber probe. The radial voidage profile is divided into jet and emulsion phase regions. The radial voidage profile in the jet region has an elliptic contour, but the voidage in the emulsion phase region is found to be equal to that under minimum fluidizating conditions. An empirical correlation for predicting the jet region voidage is proposed. The time series of pressure fluctuation are analyzed by deterministic chaos theory and power spectrum density function, and effects of jet gas velocity and static bed height on the correlation dimension and on major frequency are investigated. It is found that the major frequency (jet collapse frequency) increases with jet gas velocity. The results show that the correlation dimension increases with jet gas velocity. For a given jet gas velocity, the higher the static bed height, the greater the correlation dimension.

Abstract:In this study, the impact of multi-jet structure on the gas-solid flow in a three-dimensional integral multi-jet spout-fluidized bed was investigated using both numerical and experimental methods. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was applied to analyze the difference made by integral multi-jet to the movement of particles in a 152-mm-diametered spouted bed. The Eulerian-Eulerian approach was adopted. Compared with the conventional spouted bed, the addition of the side jet facilitates particles to generate a substantial amount of secondary eddies and the movement of particles can be effectively enhanced in the cross section of the multi-jet spout-fluidized bed. When the number of side jets approached N = 18, the particle concentration in the annulus region was shown to to be extremely low. Considering the pressure drop of the spouted bed, the comprehensive optimum number of side jet of spouted bed was set to N = 24. Besides, there existed an optimum side jet diameter D = 4 mm, at which the side jet exerted the optimal fluidizing effect on the gas-solid two-phase flow in the multi-jet spout-fluidized bed. The distribution structure of the side jets with lower density, upper sparseness and symmetry contributed to the local fluidization of the inlet gas in the dead zone, and Case D demonstrated the full fluidizing effect on the particles in the multi-jet spout-fluidized bed.

Abstract:The gas-liquid flow structure and interfacial behavior of submerged air jets were investigated experimentally using high speed digital video camera and image processing techniques. The jet pressure ratio varied from 1.8 to 4.8 in the experiment. And results from different jet nozzles were processed and compared. Statistical characteristics of the jet diameters along the axial distance were obtained and analyzed. Time series analysis was implemented to study the interface unsteadiness by calculating the gas-liquid interface deviation. The results showed that the jet diameters increase first linearly then nonlinearly and its growth rate decreases along the axial distance. The reason for the divergence between the result of this experiment and those done by other researchers was analyzed. Comparing the results of different pressure ratios and nozzle diameters, we found that larger jet pressure ratios have larger jet diameters and nozzle diameters nearly have no bearing on the distribution of dimensionless jet diameters. The interface unsteadiness in low and high pressure ratios exhibited totally distinct properties. And a minimum unsteady value was found along the axis of the air jets.

Abstract:The two‐fluid model–kinetic theory of granular flow (TFM–KTGF) model and the sub‐grid‐scale (SGS) model are used to conduct a three‐dimensional numerical simulation study on the hydrodynamic characteristics of a two‐stage fluidized bed with an integrated overflow pipe. Using various drag models, the gas–solid flows, bed expansions, pressure drop distributions, and equilibrium conditions in the two‐stage bed are compared, and the conditions for the formation of a stable overflow in the two‐stage bed are thoroughly investigated. In addition, during the simulation of the secondary distribution in the bed, the porous media model simulates the momentum loss caused by the redistribution plate to avoid the direct simulation of the redistribution plate, which requires extensive grid division work and calculation costs. This work can provide technical direction for the industrialization of one‐step coal to multistage fluidized bed natural gas technology.

Abstract:Mixing characteristic investigation on gas-solid two-phase dual parallel rectangular jets is one part basic works of horizontal bias pulverized coal combustion technological research and development,and reviewing free jet experimental and/or theoretical studies is helpful to determine the technological strategy of jets mixing characteristic investigation.Findings of reviewing free jet theoretical studies showed that time-averaged methods and time-dependent methods can be adopted to predict the turbulent structure of gas free jets,various mathematical models of the time-averaged methods are available for engineering design,finite differential technology and discrete vortex method in the time-dependent theory is able to reveal the orderly structure of gas free jets;Euler simulation and Lagrangian modeling behave complementary advantages and disadvantages for gas-solid two-phase free jets.Two-fluid model in the Euler methods should be adopted carefully in engineering applications because of false diffusion in modeling and difficulty of determining pressure distribution between gas phase and solid phase.Developed Euler-Lagrangian method in China should be closely concernd.

Abstract:This review is part of the horizontal bias pulverized coal combustion R&D plan and technological basis of the further study on dual rectangular parallel gas solid two-phase jets.Authors investigate experimental works on the gas solid two-phase fluid flow of planar and round jets.The review showes that effects of large eddy orderly structure and initial conditions on the particle dispersion of gas solid two-phase free jets are dominant.The effect could be estimated with the St number.Particle size and particle load play important roles in determining gas solid two-phase turbulent properties,and numerical simulation on gas solid two-phase planar or round jets has to face the challenge of determining simulation method and guiding engineering design because of the fact that the influence of wake eddy shedding of large particle flow on turbulence structure is sometimes the key message which should be expressed in mathematical models.The numerical simulation technology should be estimated,the following papers will present our works in detail.

Abstract:A cold model of a two-dimensional jetting fluidized bed with a cross section 300mm×50mm was employed to study the jet penetration depth and flow regime transitions. Four types of particles and four kinds of binary mixtures were used as bed materials in the test. In addition, a new multi-channel pitot tube system was developed to investigate the penetration depth. Experimental results indicate that the penetration depth decreases when the annular gas flow rate is increased from 1.0Qmf to 2.5Qmf, while it remains constant for annular gas flow rate ranging from 2.5Qmf to 3.0Qmf (annular gas flow rate including fluidization air from the plenum chamber and the V type gas distributor). A new correlation is presented for predicting the penetration depth for different annular gas flow rate. The effects of particulate density, particulate diameter, jet velocity, static bed height, nozzle diameter, and annular gas flow rate on flow regime transitions, i.e. jet, transition flow regime and spout, were systematically examined. A correlation to predict flow regime transitions was also developed, which was in good agreement with the experimental data from the present study and other references.
