Abstract:The influences of structure variables such as impeller types, baffle configurations, gas sparger, and operational variables such as gas rate, particle fraction on critical suspension speed of floating particle in an agitated vessel were investigated. The results showed that the influence of the lower impeller on N JSC was the largest, and three-bladed back-sweep impeller was the optimum. The flow pattern used finger-type baffle was beneficial to suspension of particles. In addition, the correlations of N JSC for some better impeller-baffle-sparger combinations were obtained.

Abstract:The influences of impeller types, baffle configurations and gas sparger on critical suspension speed for settling particle with aeration in an agitated vessel of 386 mm diameter equipped with a multideck impeller (such as three-blade back-curve impeller, pitched-blade turbine and simple axial-flow impeller) and different types of baffles (finger baffle, curved tube baffle) and spargers (ring sparger and tube baffle-sparger) were tested. Experimental observation and data on critical suspension speed provide useful reference for scale-up and design of agitated vessels for solid suspension.

Abstract:The local gas holdup in a dual-impeller agitated gas-liquid vessel was measured with a conductivity probe.The experiment results showed that the local gas holdup increased with the increase of the radial distance in the bottom region,and decreased in the impeller region,while it increased firstly and then decreased in other regions.With the increase of the superficial gas velocity,the local gas holdup decreased in the bottom region while it increased in other regions in the vessel.The local gas holdup in the upper circulation region was almost not affected by the agitated speed while it increased in other regions with the increase of the stirring speed.The standard deviation of the local gas holdup was used to analyze the uniformity of the local gas holdup distribution in the vessel.The smaller the standard deviation was,the better the gas dispersion was.The standard deviation of the local gas holdup increased with the increase of the superficial gas velocity while it decreased with the increase of the stirring speed.The standard deviation of the local gas holdup kept almost unchanged under the high superficial velocity or at the high stirring speed.The global gas holdup correlation between the power consumption and superficial gas velocity was proposed.

Abstract:The bubble size and local gas holdup in a stirred vessel with dual impellers were simulated numerically with computational fluid dynamics,in which the Euler-Euler multiphase flow model,multireference frame method and a transport equation for bubble number density(BND)function were combined.The effects of bubble coalescence and breakage were involved in the bubble number density function.The numerical results were in good agreement with the experimental values measured with double-tip conductivity probes.The results show that the bubble size and local gas holdup distribution in the stirred vessel are very non-uniform under relatively high superficial gas velocity.The bubble sizes in the impeller discharge region is quite small and increases with the discharge currents of the impeller.Bubbles coalescences play a dominant role in the inter-impeller region and the region above upper impeller.Local gas hold up is much high just behind the baffles and the blades where cavitation forms and in the centre of circulation loop.

Abstract:Flow development in the bubble columns is of importance for the sparger design and reactor scale up. In the present study, axial development of local gas holdup and liquid velocity in two bubble columns (0.5 and 0.8 m in diameter, respectively) operated in the churn-turbulent regime was experimentally investigated. The results show that gas distribution type, superficial gas velocity and column diameter have remarkable influences on the flow development. Compared with the near-wall aeration, the uniform and central aeration will generate more rapid flow development. The observed strong influence of the sparger type on flow development shows an opposite trend to the reported findings. Furthermore, increasing superficial gas velocity or decreasing column diameter will reduce the entrance region length. The scale effect indicates that for the large-scale industrial bubble column reactors, a large portion of flow region may be covered by the distributor region rather than the well-developed region.

Abstract:As an important indicator to evaluate the suspension effect, the uniformity of solid particle distribution is directly related to mass transfer and reaction efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the solid particle distribution in viscous system. The particle distribution of a dense solid–liquid system composed of glass beads-malt syrup stirred by the propeller is investigated experimentally by optical probe method, and the effects of impeller speed, number of baffles, particle size, average solid concentration and liquid viscosity on the solid particle distribution are discussed. The results show that, compared with the radial direction, the axial concentration distribution in the stirred tank is more uneven, and the axial mixing index is about 2–5 times the radial one. With the increasing stirring speed, the axial mixing index decreases slowly at first, then sharply decreases after reaching the just off-bottom suspension speed, and finally tends to be stable. The uniformity varies inversely with particle size and average solid concentration and directly with liquid viscosity. When the same effect is achieved, less energy is required without baffles.

Abstract:The progress on stirred mixing of gas-liquid-particle three-phase system was reviewed with 20 references. Process and impetus of suspension of particles were analyzed. The critical speeds were summarized. These characteristics were influenced by structure factors (shape of bottom of tank, impeller type and gas sparger), operational factors (rotational speed, gas rate and particle fraction) and property factors(particle diameter and density), et al. The appropriate structure factors were recommended for various technology cases.

Abstract:Systemic measurements have been carried out in agitated gas-liquid-solids systems to determine the just off-bottom suspension speed. A variety of solids sizes, solids concentrations, impeller sizes and tank sizes are used. The difference between the just off-bottom suspension speeds with and without gas sparging does not show a linear relationship with the grassing rare and the relation is system-dependent. The relative just off-bottom suspension speed RJSS = N-jsg/N-js is found to be dependent only on the just suspension aeration number Na-js = Q(g)/NjsD3 and, for DT6 impellers, the relation is RJSS = 1 + mNa(js)(n) with the values of 2.6 and 0.7 for m and n, respectively. The relation is independent of the impeller size, solids size, solids loading and tank size, and can be used to scale up laboratory data to full-scale mixing vessels. Data from different studies support the present findings.
Measurement of Critical Suspension Speed in Stirred Tank Using Acoustic Emission Technique Based on Hilbert-Huang Transform

Abstract:Acoustic emission(AE) technique,based on Hilbert-Huang transform(HHT) analysis,was used to analyze the AE signal received from the wall of a multi-layer slurry stirred tank,in which cation exchange resin was dispersed in water by agitation.IMF 1—5,which considered the characteristic scale(20—230 kHz),was obtained by empirical mode decompositon(EMD),representing the slurry system.A reconstructed AE signal was acquired by IMF 1—5.The energy of the reconstructed signal was found changing regularly with increasing impeller speed in the stirred tank.Then,a criterion to determine the critical suspension speed was presented.When energy began to remain constant after rapidly increasing,the corresponding impeller speed was the critical suspension speed.It was shown that the average absolute relative deviation(AARD) was about 3.83% compared with visual observation.Furthermore,external loop could diminish the critical suspension speed by intensifying axial flow in the tank,which meant that solid suspension was promoted.A predictive equation for calculating the critical suspension speed in a stirred tank with an external loop was proposed,which gave an AARD of 5.78%.Therefore,multi-scale analysis of acoustic signals based on HHT analysis was feasible for determining the critical dispersion speed and had the merit of being sensitive,non-intrusive and accurate.
Investigation of Gas–liquid Dispersion and Mass Transfer Performance of Wide-Viscosity-range Impellers in Water Solutions of Xanthan Gum

Abstract:Wide-viscosity-range impellers have extensive demands and applications in process industry. The gas–liquid dispersion and mass transfer characteristics of wide-viscosity-range impellers including Large-double-blade (LDB) impeller, Fullzone (FZ) impeller and Maxblend (MB) impeller in water solutions of xanthan gum were investigated experimentally and compared. The influences of gas flow rate, impeller speed and polymer concentration of liquid on the power consumption, overall gas holdup εg and mass transfer coefficient KLa were also analyzed. On this basis, the appropriate operating parameters and impeller type were determined. The results indicate that with rising flow rate, the higher εg and KLa can be achieved with a drop in power consumption, and a relatively high flow rate is recommended on the premise of guaranteeing the complete dispersal condition in aerated vessel. Higher impeller speed provides better gas–liquid dispersion and mass transfer performance, but results in more power consumption simultaneously. The appropriate impeller speed should be just enough to meet the requirements of εg and KLa. It also is found that the increasing concentration of water solution of xanthan gum adds to the complexity of gas dispersion and mass transfer in aerated vessel. Under the same specific power consumption PV, the εg and KLa are positive and negative correlation with the polymer concentration of liquid, respectively. Specially, when the concentration of water solution of xanthan gum is relatively low, the FZ impeller exhibits the best gas dispersion and mass transfer performance under the same specific power consumption. Nevertheless, the mass transfer performance of FZ impeller deteriorates significant when the concentration of water solution of xanthan gum increases to 1.00 wt%, and the MB impeller becomes the most appropriate impeller type in this condition.
Experimental Study on the Mixing and Dispersing of Floating Particles in Viscous System

Abstract:The effects of baffle configuration, impeller type, impeller diameter ratio, and immersion depth on the critical drawdown speed and power of floating particles were investigated by experiment, and the advantageous stirred vessel was determined on the basis of the low energy consumption principle. Furthermore, the effects of system viscosity, mean solid concentration, and particle size on the dispersing characteristic of floating particles were also researched with the advantageous stirred vessel. The results show that, (1) when the stirred vessel is equipped with a single baffle, the critical drawdown speed and power of floating particles are lower than those of others. (2) Among the propeller, six flat-blade disc turbine (Rushton), and six 45 degrees pitched-blade turbine (PBT-6), the Rushton turbine has the lowest critical drawdown speed, and the down-pumping propeller (TXL) has the lowest critical drawdown power. (3) The critical drawdown speed and power are lower with a larger impeller diameter and a smaller immersion depth. (4) The critical drawdown speed and power increase with increasing system viscosity, mean solid concentration, and particle size. The experimental results provide useful guidelines for the advantageous design of the stirred vessel used for the dispersing of floating particles in a viscous system.

Abstract:In view of the current situation of single form and low efficiency, a coaxial mixer with wide adaptability was combined with the drawdown of floating particles in viscous systems, and the effects of operation mode, impeller type, impeller diameter, impeller submergence, system viscosity, solid concentration and particle size were investigated experimentally. It is found that the coaxial mixer under corotation mode can achieve the critical drawdown of floating particles with lower speed and power than the corresponding single-shaft mixer, and the advantage becomes more obvious with increasing system viscosity and solid volume fraction. Under the same conditions, compared with the axial and radial flow impellers, the mixed flow impeller with down-pumping mode can effectively draw the floating particles down with the lowest critical speed and power. Moreover, a larger impeller diameter and smaller impeller submergence are recommended for the drawdown of floating particles, but the impeller diameter should not exceed half of the vessel diameter.

Abstract:The coaxial mixer with wide adaptability was combined with the critical uniform dispersion of floating particles for the first time. In this study, based on the local solid holdup measured by the optical probe method, the effects of operating mode, impeller type, impeller diameter, sold holdup, particle size and liquid viscosity were investigated. The results showed that the introduction of outer impeller significantly improved the dispersion performance. Under the same condition, coaxial mixer in the co-rotation mode can achieve critical uniform dispersion with lower speed and power than other operating mode. With the increase in inner impeller diameter, the overall trends of the critical uniform dispersion speed and power decreased and the advantage of mixed-flow impeller was gradually established compared with the axial and radial flow impellers. In addition, the increase in sold holdup and viscosity improved the difficulty of uniform dispersion of floating particles, and the required speed and power became larger accordingly.

Abstract:The influence of impellers and baffles on the mixing of gas-liquid floating particles in agitated vessels was investigated. Fifty-two kinds of impeller combinations and twelve types of baffle arrangements were used. The associated power, gas holdup and solids concentration at the vessel bottom were measured. It is concluded that the mixing characteristics of three-stage impellers were superior to those of two-stage impellers for aspect ratios larger than 1.6. The optimal combination of impellers and baffles was proposed. The correlations of the relative power and the gas holdup for the optimal combination of impellers under all types of baffles were obtained.

Abstract:The influence of solid particles size,density and loading on the critical gas-inducing impeller speed was investigated in a gas–liquid–solid stirring tank equipped with a hollow Rushton impeller.Three types of solid particles,hollow glass beads with diameters of 300 μm,200 μm,100 μm,and 60 μm,silica gel and desalting resin,were used.It was found that the adding solid particles would change the critical impeller speed.For hollow glass beads and silica gel,whose relative densities were less than or equal to 1.5,the critical impeller speeds increased with the solid loading before reaching the maximum values,and then decreased to a value even lower than that without added solids.The size of the solids also had apparent influence on the critical impeller speed,and larger solid particles correspond to a smaller critical impeller speed.The experimental data also showed that the gasinducing was beneficial to the suspension of the solid particles.

Abstract:Research progress of air hold-up,bubble size distribution and gas-liquid mass transfer in stirred vessel with viscous fluid were summarized from the perspective of experiment and simulation.The influences of impeller,operating conditions,viscosity or non-Newtonian characteristics on gas dispersion were discussed.The combination of radical-flow impellers and up-pumping axial impellers could decrease the scale of air cavitation,and was suitable for low viscosity and moderately viscous fluids.The influence of agitation speed was more significant than air inflation rate.With increasing agitation speed,uniformity of bubble distribution became better.Increasing air inflation rate enhanced air hold-up occupied by big bubbles.The non-uniformity of air distribution became worse.Increasing viscosity or non-Newtonian capacity changed the rate of collision of bubbles,making mean bubble size smaller.Correction of computational model for viscous fluids was presented and the direction of future research was prospected.

Abstract:A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is adopted to simulate the turbulent immiscible liquid-liquid flow in a stirred vessel based on a two-fluid model with a k-?-AP turbulence model. An improved inner-outer iterative procedure is adopted to deal with the impeller rotation in a fully baffled stirred tank. Different drag formulations are examined, and the effect of the droplet size on both the dispersed phase holdup distribution and the velocity field is analyzed. Two different numerical criteria are tested for determining the critical impeller speed for complete dispersion. The simulated critical impeller speeds are generally in good agreement with the correlations in the literature when the fixed droplet size is properly selected. This demonstrates that the modeling approach and the numerical criteria proposed in this work are promising for predicting the dispersion characteristics in liquid-liquid stirred tanks.

Abstract:Based on the Gidaspow model, the distributions of velocity, turbulence intensity, and solid concentration in stirred vessels equipped with a down-pumping propeller (TXL), a six flat-blade disc turbine (Rushton), or a downpumping six 45° pitched-blade turbine (PBTD-6) in a viscous system were simulated. The power curve of the TXL propeller and the dimensionless solid concentrations of one sampling point in the vessel at different agitation speeds were obtained by simulation and experiment, which were in good agreement with each other. The results showed that: (1) both the tangential velocity and turbulence intensity on the liquid surface caused by a Rushton turbine were the highest of the three conditions at the same agitation speed; (2) the turbulence intensity on the azimuth of 90° behind the baffle near the shaft on the liquid surface was relatively larger than that in other regions; (3) the uniformity of solid concentration distribution in the stirred vessel equipped with a Rushton or PBTD-6 turbine was better than that with a TXL impeller at the same agitation speed.

Abstract:Properties of gas-liquid dispersion and mixing of seven types of impellers were studied and compared in a stirred vessel with aeration. New correlations for the properties including critical dispersion impeller speed, dispersion regime, power consumption, gas hold-up, discharge flow number and discharge efficiency have been developed.The fluid/wall heat transfer was also studied with several types of dual impeller combinations. There is a critical impeller speed which determines how aeration changes the heat transfer coefficient. Operating conditions influence heat transfer interactively by three factors, which can be expressed by proper dimensionless variables.

Abstract:The liquid mixing time is of importance for the agitation process. The effects of impeller types, baffles, gas sparger, rotational speed, gas volumetric flow rate and particle fraction on mixing time were systematically investigated in three-phase gas-liquid-floating particle systems by measuring the temperature difference using thermocouples. It was revealed that axial flow was the most important factor for the liquid mixing time. The optimum space between lowest-impeller and tank bottom was 0.3D, the optimum baffle was BGBG, and the optimum sparger diameter was equaled to 0.8D. The correlation equations of mixing times were obtained.
